per John Clayton.

Broncos want a 2 or 3. Miami is thinking 4 or 5. Sounds like there are a few Defensive Linemen whose names have been mentioned as players Denver covets, and then there's Kyles $8M+ number for this year.

Lots of things holding this deal up.

I don't buy that the 2 sids are waiting to see the Arizona deal completed before flipping the switch, but I do think that the 2 sides are pretty far apart today if this deal is gonna get done in the next day or two.

It makes sense for all parties involved. And Kyle will happily restructure for a 3 or 4 year deal.

I hope this gets done sooner than later though. The longer this is unresolved, the higher the chance that it doesn't get done. And that would kill all of the momentum this offseason's given me as a fan (just MO).

If & when this deal is done I think a lot of Broncos fans will have a sigh of relief. Denver fans (I speak for those I know) are ready for this Orton thing to be done. It's not so much about Tebow, but about the feeling of calm. The team and fanbase need that a of calm at the QB position.

I agree

I know I will feel a lot better moving forward when KO is traded. We need just one starting QB, and no silly qb competition. I believe this deal will happen and now that the phins completed the Bush trade Orton will take main priority.

Denver would be foolish to give away Orton. Its a sign of weakness and we need to get past the McD era when teams wanted to trade with Denver because we’d give up more than we got.

We can’t keep that rep going.

Brady Quinn sucks. Really sucks. If we can’t get value for Orton, make him the backup QB. Trade him later when other team’s starter (a guy like Vick) goes down.

"Well at least we picked a good year to suck" said Pat Bowlen after countersigning Von Miller's rookie contract.

by McGeorge on Jul 28, 2011 7:29 AM MDT reply actions

I agree completely

The bigger issue – to me anyway – is getting something of value while there’s a market for Orton. That market has basically dried up. If Denver wants to get something/anything for Orton, they have to do it now and they may have to cave some (not all the way).

In my opinion, the biggest mistake a GM can make is not getting value for something your team doesn’t need/want when there’s a market for it.

I heard (on another post) that Denver has to pay Orton his $ if he’s on the roster tomorrow. If that’s true or directionally true, then Denver could theoretically cut Orton and save $8M this year i fthey can’t move him and if that’s the case, what a shame!

Crazy times.

by super7 on Jul 28, 2011 7:37 AM MDT up reply actions

If that's the case they'll lower their demands before cutting him or else they'll just pay him.

Maybe Miami knows this and is trying to call their bluff and see if they’ll pay him his bonus or lower the price. A game of chicken perhaps?

I agree as well

Elway and Xanders have to get value for Orton, more than a ham sandwich atleast. We can’t look like a bunch of push overs again.

miami needs orton. they can talk all they want about sticking with henne or going with kyle boller or something, but come on. they’re in a stare down but they need to give up at least an equivalent of a 3rd at some point.

unfortunately if we give the reigns to Tebow with Orton still on the team, Orton’s value is shot :(

releasing him would do us no good

we need to get some kind of value out of him, whether he sticks around and pouts on the sideline just to throw in snippets of info to Tebow (or starts so that Tebow can get a few more looks from the sideline), or we get him out on a trade to benefit us in the future (hopefully), either way we won’t release him.

I would be shocked and outraged if we cut him insted of taking a 4th.

While I think a 4th would suck compared to what he’s worth it would be better than nothing.

THis "article" is BS

Its a FanPost by womeone who doesn’t know Orton.

I'm beginning to question the rest of the NFL's "value" of Orton

Denver makes it known that he’s available, and according to many not actually affiliated with an NFL team, Orton was possibly the best option behind Kolb. However, no one has been knocking the door down, the one team (Miami) that has shown considerable interest isn’t willing to give up much of anything. I think the Broncos are seriously over-valuing Kyle due to his inflated yardage stats in McD’s pass-happy offense. Two years ago Kyle was invaluable enough to be an afterthought throw-in. Denver might be the only team in existence who feels his value went from throw-in to 2nd rounder in two years. I think they are dreaming.

Mediocrity is like a lollipop: lick it once and you'll suck forever.

by improv88 on Jul 28, 2011 7:42 AM MDT reply actions

Therein lies the rub

I think Orton is ARGUABLY (but not definitely) the best QB on the market, but in no way is he the obvious choice for ‘best available’. Some like Hasselbeck best (he has won the playoffs). Some like VY’s upside & value, some like Kolb’s promise even though it comes at a King’s ransom and some like Orton because he isn’t a gunslinger. SOme even like Buler best for their particular situation.

But the reactions from Miami fans and people outside of Denver and Miami should let you know what the public perception of Orton is.

The public perception is:

decent QB, but no shot at ever being elite, stats are better than he is, chokes in big situations, nothing to get excited about.

You can disagree with me all you want. But the public perception is that he’s an average starter. Now that said, I don’t know what Miami or other GMs think he’s worth but it can’t be lightyears better than public perception – and I say that because the best Denver has been offered for him is a pick in the middle of the draft. At the end of the day, teams need to sell tickets too. ANd Orton is not a sexy QB addition to the casual NFL observer.

I think you are right on if Denver does end up passing up a trade. But in reality, Denver needs to overblow his value in order to get a ‘good deal’ from Miami. If Denver went in saying they wanted a #3, Miami would sya that Kyle’s worth a #4 or #5.

The biggest group of overvaluers of Orton exist within the ranks of Bronco COuntry. We tend to put our QB on a pedestal here. ANd at MHR I’ve seen Orton’s value at a #2 all offseason, but I’ve been saying that he’s worth a 3rd or 4th rounder all along.

If Denver can get a #3, I think that’s huge. Realistically, I think they do a #4 and a player or a player and a future pick contingent upon Orton’s 2011.

I can’t imagine having Orton on the Denver roster this year, because sadly, my perception of Orton isn’t too far off of what the public perception is.

Kolb’s value is overblown, but he hasn’t played enough to prove Reid’s value to be too far off. I don’t think Kolb is worth a #1 but maybe a #2. Thing is that nobody knows exactly what he’s worth, and that’s whytheir willing to pay more. I think teams know what Orton’s worth, and we’re realizing that in the current marketplace.

by super7 on Jul 28, 2011 8:59 AM MDT up reply actions

Orton's value is higher than a 4 or 5

It has to be. I know he’s thought of as an afterthought in the Cutler deal, but remember, we got him for a 5th round pick. Denver traded Cutler and a 5th for 2 1st’s, 2 3rd’s, and Kyle Orton.

Using that as the jumping off point, Orton’s value has increased quite a bit in the past two years by working with McD and showing that he can be a player. He is worth far more than a 5th. I don’t care what Miami says.

And if that value is only added if there is a good QB coach, then the other teams need to look at improving their QB coaches.

Most of the "fans".......

around here would cave in any negotiations they were in. Don’t let your obsession with Tebow get in the way of making decisions. It is possible that Orton would restructure with Denver. And be the starter. Not a bad outcome….

by Gulbrand on Jul 28, 2011 8:01 AM MDT reply actions

Patience

It is more than appropriate for Orton to be taking snaps as NOW is not necessarily the ONLY time the Broncos could reach maximum trade value. Ideally, yes, Orton is traded now for a 2nd at a minimum. If it’s considerably less than this it is highly likely SOMEONE will be needing a quarterback during the season, including Miami. Seems to me Miami is playing games to drive the price down. We’re not so desperate that it wouldn’t make sense to hold on to Orton in the short term. If Miami doesn’t "pony up" then Orton and Tebow should fight it out. Personally, it wouldn’t hurt my feelings for Tebow to have to earn the promotion anyway.

We haven't even had a major free agency signing yet

Trades are far more complicated and we’re only a couple days in to this.

Is it really so crazy to think these things just take time? Kevin Kolb hasn’t been traded yet, either.

Also, I’ve been saying for weeks that John Fox really does want to see Orton throwing passes next to Tebow for a couple days of camp before he bets our future on him. I don’t think that’s a crazy idea. And I don’t think it should scare us.

As for Miami bullying us around or the idea that we need to be scared of them walking away, I say rubbish. Their HC and GM are on the hot seat. Their CEO all but openly confirmed just the other day that if they don’t win, they’re out. They need Orton worse than we need to get rid of him, IMO.

I think Bannan isn't coming back, Nate Irving will start at MLB and Tim Tebow starts at QB. Oh, and VonDoom should combine for 20-25 sacks.

Good take Rodney, It is hard to stay rational sometimes when dealing with issues like these.

GMs don’t often think like regular fans and we should be patient with it.

thanks

I have to admit, though, that while I don’t worry about us being able to move Orton, I am starting to get worried about the DTs. Jenkins sounds like he’s going to Washington, which means they grabbed Cofield AND Jenkins. That’s what we should have done, especially now that there are legitimate concerns as to whether Little Vick can be a starter here while he’s still significantly under 300 pounds.

yeah if we don't bag Mebane then we better hope and pray that we can score Langford in the deal with Orton.

Otherwise we lose out on all the top tier DTs.

I wouldn’t mind Langford + Jenkins. That should cost us about 1 Mebane right?

I forgot about Jenkins since I already had him with the Redskins.

I would be ok with both of those guys for sure.
