John Elway is Earning His Spurs!

With the Miami Dolphins signing Matt Moore it is looking like Kyle Orton will remain a Bronco for the foreseeable future. I commend John Elway for sticking to his guns and not allowing himself to be bullied by other teams. Those of you who think he is being weak are just flat wrong.

Besides, the signing of an average backup quarterback is a joke of "calling a bluff". In poker, when you have the hand and someone bets half the pot, you go all-in. Now is the time for Elway and company to go all-in. Give up a 2nd rounder or start Matt Moore in 2011.

I've been a huge critic of Kyle Orton, but I've softened over the last week or so. Really, it only started when fans at training camp cheered loudly with Orton's first pass. I'm feeling that perhaps I may have been off the mark with how fans would treat Orton if he started Week 1. Honestly, it feels good to possibly be wrong as it would mean Broncos fans still have class - something I've also worried about in recent years. So thank you to all of those at training camp who did us all proud yesterday.

I'm starting to slowly coming around to the idea of giving Orton another shot. Tim Tebow still needs his shot, but it might be nice to see Orton play with a stronger rushing attack and a cohesive offensive line. I guess maybe us Tebow fans should exercise some patience and let this all play out as it may.

We should also be proud of John Elway for being a strong leader. Each day that passes with Orton not being dealt for a pair of used underwear and a sack of oats is a day that our confidence in Elway should grow. 2011 is looking mighty good right now, so Go Broncos!

Yeah. I think they showed what rookies they are. Orton held them to ransom, and we get no value for him. They butchered and what does this do for the team? Absolutely nothing! What a joke!

Doesn’t end tomorrow if we don’t get the fifth round draft pick because the deal fell through.

At worst we get his 9 million salary off the books next year, giving us some renewed flexibility

At best he has a good season and does better than expected. There are worse situations we could be in.

I know most of you are still sour about McD, but he would have gotten this deal done. I could have gotten this deal done. Get off your * EFX and do something. We have interest in every good free agent on the market, yet maybe 1 signing on a low profile guy. Gimme a ***** defensive tackle already.

The sticking point was a long term deal for Orton and his agent, they got bullied and caved. Elway did nothing of consequence here as far as I can tell.

by slingshotsally on Jul 29, 2011 3:12 PM MDT up reply actions

Just curious...

What would you say we should do if Tebow starts and plays the same and maybe progresses a little from where he was last year?

Would it make sense to draft a 1st round QB next year?

I ask because I don’t really see why Tebow would improve so much this year or be so bad this year that we could say the quarterback question is answered.

This question goes for those who say we should keep Orton as well.

by calvinandhobbes on Jul 30, 2011 1:27 AM MDT up reply actions

Orton startying is far from the end of the world.

It would give Orton a shot to prove himself. The clutch piece that cjfarris wrote showed that calling Orton unclutch is silly to do when looking at one season. Also, Orton starting would give Tebow more time to watch and learn from the sidelines. I am very happy with where we are with our cap space and thankful EFX didn’t cave and let Miami shoot themselves in the foot. With an Doom coming back and Miller our D should be improved just because they couldn’t get worse and adding a guy that had 16 sacks in 2009 will help. With McGahee, Moreno and an improved O-line our running game will improve and will help Orton and in turn help our red zone efficiency

From the Book of Tebow: And on the 133rd day, Tebow descended from heaven and spoke two words to the masses. Game On. And it was, for Tim Tebow had single-handedly ended the lockout with his divine powers and those two sacred words. In the wake of his divine miracle Timmy Touchdown would go on to be the incarnation of the legendary John Elway, who would watch from up above every Sunday… In his owners box.

by Eddie.Teach on Jul 29, 2011 11:49 AM MDT reply actions

I disagree Zappa

not that I’m down on Orton or anything but it’s obvious that Orton is not the future at QB. We are obviously a young team who is rebuilding and why pay that much money to Orton when we already know who the future is. I say play Tebow and see what he’s got, and if we decide he is not the future maybe we get Lucky in the next draft.

I’d have been happy with whatever we could get for Orton instead of watching him lead another losing season and then leave next year with no compensation.

A good debate for sure!

I think they are off to a really bad start

We have to pay Orton 9 Mil this year and watch his sorry ass get sacked on 3rd down knocking us out of field goal range. Also we get nothing in return for him and he walks after this year. On top of that Tebow misses valuable playing time and we still lose. Unless he is traded before week 1 and some decent Dt"s are signed I really don’t think they are doing a good job. I think they might be gun shy to make any deals because they saw what happens when you make bad ones like McD.

by VR92 on Jul 29, 2011 12:06 PM MDT reply actions   1 recs

Him walking for nothing next year

Isn’t the worst thing ever. I’d give up a 5th to have him around – it gives Tebow some help, if they are used correctly.
Tebow and Orton can handle competing against each other for the job while being teammates. If the fans stop being so impatient and embrace both of them, this can work out well in the end.

by northoftheborder on Jul 29, 2011 2:30 PM MDT up reply actions

This sort of analysis is media driven drama

“Chemistry issues” because of a QB battle? Is that what happened in Philly last year?

In the actual locker room, the players are used to competing for the job. The team is fully behind both of those guys – neither one is a Favre-like drama queen. Both are complete professionals and class acts. We can play football well in this situation as much as if Orton was traded. Just don’t get desperate and do something stupid like cut Orton. Be rational and patient.

Patience is the key.

About Orton in 2011.

The risk to the Broncos is less than it is for Orton. Another performance on 3rd down and in the red zone this year with a strong running game and cohesive OL and his goose is pretty well cooked for a large contract with any team in 2012.

Meanwhile, Tebow gets to continue working on his form and technique without the stresses of “win now” games.

Go Elway

I was hoping the Card would be willing to trade Cromartie for Orton. However, even if a deal with Miami doesn’t happen, teams will be looking for a veteran QB due to injury or inconsistant play before too long. There will be other opportunities.

by KT3 on Jul 29, 2011 12:41 PM MDT reply actions

I disagree.....

…..we are going to have a QB controversy. Maybe not in the locker room but in the media and with the fans and this is going to get real old on this site seeing it play out everyday this year. We need to see what we have in Tebow eventually. Why wait another year? We aren’t going too far anyways this season so let’s see if Tebow can play. It seems we are going to delay a year for a 2nd round draft pick? Really? It isn’t worth losing a whole year over. Unless you guys are arguing that Orton can be the QB of not just this year but our future and Tebow is a wasted draft pick. Then I can see the argument. I just don’t agree. But if the thought is he will be good enough for this year but still want to see Tebow the following year, then I really just can’t follow that train of thought. 9 million dollars and a wasted year of development for Tebow because of a 2nd round pick. A second round pick that may never even turn into a quality starter in this league.

by bonaire on Jul 29, 2011 1:05 PM MDT reply actions

Aaron Rodgers didn't start until his 4th or 5th year in the league.

So to say Tebow is wasting a year of development isn’t true. The situation is very similar to that and it worked out fine for the packers. Also whose to say the broncos can’t restructure Orton’s contract for this year? The broncos could lower his contract from 9 to 5 or 6 million and I’m sure Orton would be fine with that. There’s nothing wrong about letting Tebow sit another year.

Quarterback controversy

There will always be a QB controversy in the media and the fans no matter who is here … go back and read articles on DeBerg and Elway and how often people screamed for Kubiak. That in spite of the fact that none of these guys can even polish Elway’s shoes. The only difference is 24/7 media coverage. If the controversy is not in the locker room (and I am not sure that it is) then I don’t think the players really care how old it will get on this site.

to be honest, I don’t think we will sign a big name guy.

We are going to sign a bunch of depth guys. Our DT’s are not going to be great this year, but they might be enough.

Kevin Vickerson, Jeremy Jarmon, Derek Landri and Jason Hatcher.

4 guys who you can rotate in and out. 4 guys who can stop the run.

We have until the end of the year to reach the minimum spending requirements

While teams have to be under the cap at the start of the year, the minimum spending requirements don’t apply until the end of the year. Thus, excess cap money could be used for other important things such as resigning Clady.

Or worst case scenario

We keep Orton, whom most here believe is competent, and then we only have 11 million to put somewhere. Its not the end of the world if Orton starts again, we have beaten everyone in the division at least once with him under center.

I totally agree with your post, Tim!

I think we have to trust what J. Elway is doing for this organization! While the trade talks and mock draft ideas have always created welcomed arguements, (mostly fun reading for me), I think its really questioning Elway’s football integrity to suggest we are in for a total flopped season by keeping KO. I am a HUGE Tebow fan!!!! I’m still excited about this season with all of the transactions and more to come, I’m sure. So, I think the qb debate has overshadowed the greater need—D— which was far too ignored by Shanny and McD! Patience yes, but trust in this FO which has a far better sense of all the NFL inside happenings then those of us on the outside—inspite of our football IQ’s. While I want to see Tebow play, IF Orton is the starter, I’m supporting the decision by the coaches that made him so! Regardless, I’m anxious to see what this Fox defense will look like. Unlike recent years, I believe we will be far more competitve! Go Broncos!!!!

by Tim4Tebow on Jul 29, 2011 2:04 PM MDT reply actions

I don't agree Tim

do you really think that the fan base has changed? do you really think that one good pass and a few cheers from the stands is a reason to believe that the fans believe that Orton is wanted for another year?

If that is what happens because we can’t trade him I would be willing to bet you that once we go on a multiple losing streak (which we will) that same fan base will have taken a 180 (assuming your right when you think they want to see him at the helm again) and start the same chants of getting rid of him and changing QB’s. What will we have gained?

If Orton does well and has a 8-8 year what have we gained? He will be gone. Nobodoy believes we are going to resign him long term. But I guess anything can happen.

I still beleive we are going to release him or trade him this year but if we keep him and start him and finish 8-8 or less…..what a wasted season….

I may be on an Island here but I really enjoyed watching the last 3 games even tho our year was toast. Just watching a team play hard under Tebow and the feeling that we just may be able to pull off those 2 losses was a great change from watching us go behind and no that there was no chance in hell that we were going to claw back.

That is what I want to continue with. I would like to see what we have in Tebow with a different team. If he could charge up the guys and make them play the way they did when they could have just given up totally with nothing to gain, I would like to see what he can do with the new players.
I don’t want to go back to milk toast just to set us back another year. If Tebow doesn’t look like he is able to do it then off to market we go.

It could also be that the fans were cheering because they are able to watch football again after the lockout. Uphoria has its way to almost become delusional. And to believe that the fan base has turned around could be just that .

Time will tell….. I just believe it is time to raise the bar and not continue down a road that will most likely take us only part way there….

Yes everyone likes watching Tebow better

But after several tough games, on a young player learning a newish system without an offseason of work with the coaches and all… we’ll all be calling for Denver to draft Luck, without giving Tebow a true chance to succeed.

Look, I wanted to see an Orton trade. But not for peanuts. Only for his value – which should be a 2nd or 3rd at least. Tebow will develop just fine behind Orton and the “wasted” 8-8 season, with the chances he gets to be on the field. The biggest barrier to the success of this system is us – the fans. We need to have the attitude that they are both good QBs and support them that way. Patience will pay off. Tebow is basically still a rookie now – so like teams such as MN or TN, we can use the vet for him to develop behind. The only thing we really lose, in my estimation, is the draft pick we could get for him. If that draft pick isn’t high enough, it’s not worth it.

Patience. Patience. Patience.

Goin out on a limb here

I have tried to bring this up many times. We have Orton for a year, he walks and we get a conditional. Use that year for our advantage. Tebow is not going to regress because he is on the bench or practicing with the second team.

Based off of what?

If we were trying to go all in for luck, we would not have made the draft choices we made, we would not have resigned champ, we would not have brought in a sound defensive coach. We are going to be 8-8 this year.

Agree with the patience

but don’t agree with Tebow learning behind Orton. After watching how he got the team to respond around him and having that feeling that this wild rookie just might be able to pull off every game I watched him play is what I want.
I never had that feeling with Orton when we got behind. I never once felt or believed that he could come from behind. Could be just me.

I know we are in a tough spot but I do feel at this point that if we just got what we are going to have to pay Orton back to put towards our Defense then I am all for it at this time.
I don’t really know what Ortons worth is anymore other than a biased one because he is a Bronco.

Right now it looks like he does not have any worth or interest from another team. So if that is the case then he is costing the Broncos 9 million or what ever the exact amount is. That can be used to shore up the defense.

You are right, patience, but if nobody wants him after preseason I say trade for what ever or release him.

One other thing, if Orton stays and does not beat Tebow out for the starting job, he made it very clear that he does not want to be a backup. What does that say and how is that going to go over?
I say Orton has one definate value. 9 million dollars….. Lets use it…

Plus I would really hate to see us keep Orton and then feel we can’t sit a 9 million dollar backup so therefore he starts….nope…

But we still have time to see how this washes out… either way….Go Bronco’s

My biggest problem with Orton is

it could stunt Tebow’s growth.

If we keep Orton and start Tebow, any mistake Tebow makes and there will be plenty (he’s young and should be afforded opportunity to make mistakes and grow) fans and media will be calling for Orton to go in.

And the opposite is true too, if Tebow sits we will constantly be calling for his name.

Even if we keep Orton eventually we will have to decide on who’s the starter and it seems like we are only prolonging the inevitable.

To me its a bad situation to have Orton and Tebow on the same team.

by trumanj on Jul 29, 2011 3:09 PM MDT reply actions

It won't necessarily stunt Tebow's growth

Lots of QBs were backups for several years and developed well
Rivers
Schaub
Rodgers
Hasselbeck
Cassel (or so the Chiefs believe)
Kolb (or so the Cards believe)

It’s not that bad to have them both – it just will make the fans and media antsy.

Why does almost everyone assume Orton will be the starter after one day of practice?

Let’s at least get through camp and the preseason….My money is on Tebow to win the job outright, regardless if Orton is here or not….Orton’s presence will just make Tim work that much harder. As far as team chemistry goes, I imagine it can only get better after last season; QB controversy or not

by keb on Jul 29, 2011 3:17 PM MDT reply actions   1 recs

Why the foregone conclusions on July 29?

There will be other opportunities to trade Orton, both before the start of the season and before the trade deadline. All EFX have done so far is not pull the trigger on a bad deal. And nobody has won the starting job for opening day as yet.

Don’t minimize the importance of getting a higher draft pick for Orton. It’s not just about that one draft pick – it’s about what kind of stockpile we have in sum total. The more value we get, the more currency we hold in the next draft, which would allow us to maneuver for another QB if Tebow doesn’t pan out. Or it allows us to maneuver for more help on the defensive line.

Wah-Wah I WANT TEBOW! [Slobbering on myself and spewing sweat beads on my keyboard] Wah-Wah I WANT TEBOW!

If we are unable to trade Orton (of which I think is Bullsh*t), then Orton himself has a chance of a lifetime staring him right in the face and his future pocketbook. Orton for the first time in his career will be starting with an offense that has been upgraded higher than anything he has seen or played with. Our running game the last 2 years didn’t help Orton very much and mostly it made his job more difficult (without hearing him make any excuses), his Oline has been in transition since the firing of Shanahan and the hiring of McD with the confusion of learning a new scheme (power blocking) and continuity, he has endured bellyaching wide receivers (Marshall and Scheffler), been rubbed in the face of Tebow starflashes, media criticism and still has held a steady cadence…What more can you or anybody else ask for? Ridiculous analogy with stats? Start Orton with this offense and we may be in for a pleasure ride without the distractions of the past 2 years. Not saying he’ll guide us to the playoffs, even though it is possible, but his toolbox will look and be a lot fuller than it has been since being here. Start Orton and I will be behind him 100%! 13-3 baby!!! Until we ain’t!

I gotta disagree....

1. Clearly the Broncos wanted to trade Orton. They failed.

2. Orton is gone after this year, I think that’s fairly obvious. So if he’s gone, why not get him out now? Why have this lingering awkwardness that is almost exactly like the awkwardness we had with Cutler/McDaniels?

3. Now we have a lame duck QB who is here and eating up the reps and playing time for Tebow who needs to be seen in the starting role. As a fan I hate to say it, but this could be a 4 – 6 win team again this year and with Andrew Luck on the horizon, this needs to be settled this year. Orton hanging around just gums up the works even now! Tebow needs to have a camp as the starter.

4. The Broncos have salary cap issues and we are renting Orton for a year at big bucks. That salary needed to be gone and again, the Broncos failed to move it.

5. If anything, EXF were to hardline. They tried to get too high a pick. Orton should have been moved for a 7th rounder if need be. The trade was never about the pick, it was about moving Orton this year and saving $$.

Feel free to talk me down from my ledge, but I don’t think this played out well.

I was proven right, cause Tebow performed as well or better than Orton to finish 2010. That doesn’t mean 2010 is 2011 though. I still think Tebow has more upside, but I no longer think it will be the end of the world if Orton starts in 2011………….just the end of 2011. :P lol

My contention is that if you are going to try to trade your starting QB, and let that go public, you better be damned sure your going to pull if off.

So shouldn’t they have been aware that the contract would be an issue. I think that should have been a known going in to this operation. Not an after the fact thing.

Disagree

We can trade our starting QB because our situation is full of talent. We can afford to listen to you. Denver had a deal but KO did not like it.
Denver is no worse off, in fact, nothing has changed.
We can start with Tebow, Orton, or (god forbid) Quinn.
I have three cars and one of them is nice but I would sell it. Now I am not going to sell it cheap just becuase I have three of them and it does not hurt me if I don’t sell it.

Opinions are like......, Well anyway, this is mine.

by Sean in Pa. on Jul 30, 2011 6:47 AM MDT up reply actions

To use your analogy...

Let’s say one of those cars you just purchased, but you don’t know how nice it is. Wouldn’t you want to take it on a nice long test drive to make sure nothing pops up?

I think there is a forcing issue here….Andrew Luck. If we start Orton a few games and then Tebow a few games, chances are we are a 4 – 6 win team. That puts you in Andrew Luck territory.

I would rather go into that scenario with full knowledge of what an entire season under Tebow is, rather than just letting him get a few starts in with only a few weeks with #1 reps.

Lets have him at #1 now!! Getting the reps and the time so we can evaluate him this season.

Who cares about Orton. He is gone after this year one way or the other. He needs to be out of the way.

by charlesnelsonreilly on Jul 30, 2011 9:00 AM MDT up reply actions

Nothing has changed?

I think we tried to trade our #1 QB and failed, doesn’t look good. Just think what the QB’s were thinking Monday vs, Friday……

by Clompy on Jul 30, 2011 9:07 AM MDT up reply actions

No

The word out of the FO is we would trade. The Broncos have said publicly all along that Kyle Orton goes into training camp as the starter. Cutler was the panzy that could not take being considered for a trade. Just because your willing to listen does not mean you have to take any deal offered or that you have to deal at all.

Opinions are like......, Well anyway, this is mine.

by Sean in Pa. on Jul 30, 2011 9:16 AM MDT up reply actions

Ummm...

I think they got pretty deep into talks with Miami. Which to me means you are looking to move the guy.

Of course I don’t think Orton responds like Cutler. I think Orton is a reasonable guy.

Regardless, trying to trade your #1 QB and failing is not a good thing.

He clearly believes in himself so I can’t hold that against him. Neither can you. He is betting on himself.

That said, Rocko and Hoop will hate this, but if Orton continues to be a loser in Denver, he will be so very hated by the home fans. Fox will have to pull him early to avoid the chorus of boos.

This will be fascinating to watch it play out so I’m clearly excited by these developments.

If Orton comes thru, it will be a feel good story for him no doubt.

If Orton stinks up the place I agree

What if the team struggles like last year?
Does Orton get the blame? I think he does.
Then what happens when Tebow comes in and rallies the troops for a couple of games but then the team stinks it up.
So now Tebow sucks and we have to get Luck?

My personal nightmare is the Broncos FO acting like the fans and trying to buy or steal the next great thing.

Quinn would go in

they are giving him all the #2 reps, Tebow is practicing with Weber. Would this avoid the booing? It would postpone it at least, Quinn would have to screw up also.

by Portia on Jul 30, 2011 6:57 AM MDT up reply actions

Quinn getting more reps is interesting in a lot of ways

One is because, under the new rules, a team can have 3 QB’s active for the day but not have to monkey around with the rule that if the 3rd one comes in, he has to stay in. So, the Broncos can start Orton, put Tebow in from time to time, but if Orton gets hurt, they can put Quinn in. The active roster is 46 now, not 45.

It’s really scary when you have a moment of temporary sanity.

Not sure what they were trying to prevent with that rule.

Opinions are like......, Well anyway, this is mine.

by Sean in Pa. on Jul 30, 2011 8:06 AM MDT up reply actions

It is smart

Or would be if the old rule weren’t so dumb. The whole 53 man roster but only 45 active on game day thing is to sort of balance things out – two teams play, one is totally healthy, the other has several players out for the game. Limiting rosters to 45 would balance things out. Makes some sense.
But they realized that a game would go to hell if one team lost all it’s QB’s, so they said teams can dress a 3rd QB but put in all those qualifications.
I think somebody realized it’s not necessary and cleaned it up.

It’s really scary when you have a moment of temporary sanity.

by bradley on Jul 30, 2011 8:36 AM MDT up reply actions

You are talking like Orton will be the man

I think if Orton starts again then Denver may well have dug its own grave. What would be the point? Unless they believe we are going to make the playoffs. If that is not a given then it makes no sense at all.
Play Orton because he is our 9 million dollar man?

Maybe try riding the Tebow wagon and see if the team gets as charged as it did last year when there was nothing to lose. If Tebow falls flat on his face then play Orton cause we would have nothing to lose.

Then we can start evaluating who the next QB is. But to Start Orton and not expect to make the playoffs is a wasted year.

What if Tebow

needs a couple of years to get his NFL legs? John Elway lined up behind guard. Tried to hard to make plays. In the 80’s they were calling for his head.

What would you all do if one year is not enough, we ship Tebow off and he takes another team to the SB??

Opinions are like......, Well anyway, this is mine.

by Sean in Pa. on Jul 30, 2011 6:53 AM MDT up reply actions

Yep....the calls to only give him one year are insane. As long as there is incremental improvement over the season you have to stick with him.

Just what I saw in last years 3 games

was enough for me to roll with Tebow this year. I can only imagine if Tebow gets all of the snaps in practice with the first team he would only get better.
In those 3 games he had a beaten down team rally around him for 3 worthless games.
In those 3 games you could feel the energy of the whole team and had this feeling that we could win every one of those games.
I did not and I am sure that most fans did not have that feeling when Orton was on the field. We get behind with Orton and the feeling of doom took over.
I have a very good feeling that Tebow will make many mistakes if he starts but if he does he will overcome these mistakes and I am very sure he will not give up and sit at the end of the bench when he is not having a good game.

Instead of what if, lets give it a try and see. There is nothing to lose by starting our possible franchise QB. Nothing to gain by starting Orton unless we believe he is going to take us to the SB this year….not going to happen

Tebow must suck...

If he cant earn the staring role himself. Seriously, I have been reading all of these rants “oh sob, sob, Orton is still here and Tebow cant start”. What is wrong with this statement? “Oh Orton is still here so we are going to draft Luck next year”. I guess you all mean that Tebow is really bad and needs to be handed the job on a silver platter. Or that you have no faith in his abilities, so we should start him right away.
How about Tebow earning the starting role? I think he has the drive and ability to do it.

by Robert Haptonstall on Jul 29, 2011 8:57 PM MDT reply actions

No, but.....

…..a rookie starter, or a 2nd year guy with only 3 starts is not as polished as a seasoned vet like Orton. Tebow will have his growing pains. Evan Elway and Manning needed to learn on the job. We are just likely putting that off for part or all of a year. Why? And the controversy that we will have to deal with pretty much daily on this site doesn’t seem to appealing to me.

It’s been two days and I can guarantee you Orton will win the job with that red shirt on. The good thing – or bad – is that Orton rarely stays healthy for an entire season. Tebow will get his shot to play a game in 2011.

Or maybe the gamer will be starting

and not just the good practice player…..yep yep yep

by pwsbronco on Jul 29, 2011 11:58 PM MDT up reply actions

I don't think its as simple as that.....

Tebow is a 2nd yr QB with 3 NFL starts. Orton is a vet with many more starts than 3. So if it were just based on ability, who knows who wins that competition. But with the experience card in there, Orton can win that competition. Is that what we want. I think as far as long term strategy goes, thats a real problem.

Let’s be honest, the Broncos are a 4 – 6 win team. Andrew Luck looms. Tebow needs to start even if he isn’t the best QB on the team right now.

by charlesnelsonreilly on Jul 29, 2011 9:02 PM MDT up reply actions

How do you know that..

we will be in a position to draft Luck? And it raises the same question, Cant TT earn the position?

by Robert Haptonstall on Jul 29, 2011 9:06 PM MDT up reply actions

I don't....

But if we are, do we take him if Tebow hasn’t been vetted via a season under center?

by charlesnelsonreilly on Jul 29, 2011 9:13 PM MDT up reply actions

I just hope

somebody told Tebow he was the third string QB before he got shuffled to end of the field. Really, I hope somebody clued him in. (I really didn’t know Quinn was #2)

Further,

It appears that Orton held this up because he wanted a giant contract. It is pretty obvious that there will be many many fans angry with Orton for this. When he falters, and he will, it is going to get very very nasty.

Too much negativity!

1. McD is gone! Let me repeat that McD is gone!
2. John Elway is back! Let me repeat that, Elway is back! This changes the entire mindset of the Denver Broncos football team. Do a little research and see what happened when Mike Ditka returned to the Bears in the 80s.
3. John Fox is a very good HC. An adult is now in charge again! McD was one of the worst HCs that I’ve ever seen in the NFL. The players just didn’t respect him. You can tell that Coach Fox has the team’s attention and respect.
4. The 2011 draft was fantastic! von Miller will be a difference maker.
5. Doom is Back!
6. EFX will get us at least one highly rated DT to complete our front four.
7. Our running game will be better in 2011. Fox knows how to run the ball!
8. Fox is a defensive minded HC. Our defense will be vastly better this season.
9. With an improved OL and running game, our offense will be improved.
With better coaching and a good defense, I see 10/11 wins.

by rocko1 on Jul 29, 2011 9:03 PM MDT reply actions

"And Elway is back"

Do you suppose that is what the Washington Wizards said when Jordan took over and the Lions said when Millen took over and the Knicks said when Thomas took over, and so on. I am rooting for Elway too, but he has to earn his stripes as a front office guy in the NFL. I am not saying he is doing a bad job yet, but just because he was a great QB does not mean he will be a great NFL executive. TIme will tell and I am willing to withhold judgement at this time.

With a cohesive OL and a rushing attack? What then?

It’s a dangerous game to attach yourself to emotionally to a player that you completely lose all objectivity. Not just you man, but all the Tebow guys too.

Let’s be Broncos fans and if Orton sucks balls this year, let him go. Sooner or later, we will need to find out if Tebow is worth the money he is being paid.

See, I think Orton is at best an average NFL QB.

I think Tebow could grow into a Top 10 QB, maybe more. Simply because he has Peyton Manning like work ethic and Elway like escapability. It is all about how he continues to develop…2011 certainly would speed that up some if he started. HOWEVER, backing up in 2011 will make the growing pains in 2012 much easier for him to learn from. We’re fans that…we want everything now. ;)

Actually it started out a snowball.

If you watch the tape, the team was coming together later in the season. They rallied and fell short against the Rams. The entire team – except for Orton – dominated the Chiefs and fell short. Then Tebow got his shot and the entire team rallied around him to finish strong.

This may be a 4-12 team, but the way they closed the year last year it felt like this team had more than it gave in 2010. If Orton starts in 2011, 8-8 is almost a disappointment judging by what I saw in the last 5-6 games in 2010. Then again, if Tebow starts, 8-8 will likely be a success. Orton has 7 years and tons of experience and is at his peak in ability. Tebow is in year 2 with three starts and the ceiling isn’t even close to being reached.

From a Bronco first Tebow 2nd fand

Orton as a grind it out, it’s ok to punt every now and then kind of QB might be better than he was last year. Last year he was an upper middle pack QB that seemed to flinch when it was all on his shoulders. Seems like he could move up because:
Our OL will be better if only by experience.
Our running game will be better if only by design.
Our defense will be better, cause we can’t get much worse and we have better tools to work with.
Our coach understands a good punt is not always a bad play.
We have lost nothing to speak of. The DL we cut have not been courted and or signed, same at RT and we have made movement to soilidfy both positiions.
Our defensive approach will become chained lightning, hence the speed and that’s what the FO has told us they want.
Tebow is the bomb! I’m not sure yet if that’s Da Bomb or a bomb he won’t be in the middle for long.
Orton staying for now is not a bad thing. Competition, Insurance and value.

I'm right 97% of the time. Who cares about the other 4%?
