MHR Poll of the Week for July 31, 2011: Which Move Was Best?
FINALLY! So we have a new CBA in place, training camp started last week and the Broncos have begun making moves, or not making moves depending on what you were expecting. Either way, last week I asked you what type of article you'd like to see more of around Mile High Report. We got great feedback on this one:
| Answer: | Votes | Percentage |
|---|---|---|
| Statistical Review |
60 | 16% |
| Educational Pieces |
123 | 32% |
| Opinion and Prediction |
188 | 49% |
| Other | 12 | 3% |
| Total: | 383 | 100% |
We can see that there was no 80% blowout this week, and most comments just said they wanted more content, but more prediction and opinion pieces was the winner here, taking home 49% and 188 votes. Educational Pieces and Statistical Reviews followed, going home with 32% and 16% respectively.
But that's in the past, we are in the present now, let's get to work!
So we've had a few days for the Broncos to make some post-lockout moves, this week I'm having you choose which one you think was the best move. Here's a brief review for you:
Free Agents:
- K Matt Prater signed his tender
- LB Wesley Woodyard signed his tender
- DT Ryan McBean signed his tender
- RB Willis McGahee signed to a three-year contract
- WR David Anderson signed to an unknown contract
Trades:
- Traded WR Jabar Gaffney to Washington for DE Jeremy Jarmon

Prater for sure, but...
Woodyard was a close second for me cause I think this kid is not near his peak.
You can be dumb... that's ok! There are many dumb people.
You can be an a$$hole... that's ok! There are many of these as well.
Unfortunately you cannot be both...
Ok... prove me wrong.
Broncos not serious about winning. The hope was to aleast see the kid play this year not orton. We still have dt’s. I keep hearing dont over pay. We can’t stop needs bleed. We gave bannan the same deal like mebane. Yet elways said were going to be active but I see nothing. Been every training camp session this year. They got tebow works with the threes not the ones. Tebow we got find out if heis the real deal if Draft qb next Luck!
Its amazing that you and I seem to be the only ones who notice that Tebow has been moved down on the depth chart not up. They clearly have no plans of playing him.

I noticed.
I also know it is early and Tebow is the victim of bad timing with the lockout and the inability to be coached this offseason. I am an Orton fan. I am also very excited about what I think Tebow can bring in gametime. That being said, I root for the guy who is currently on the field in orange and blue. I won’t speculate much – I will just kick back and enjoy.

I was mainly talking about the MSM who now doesn't know what to talk about....
You all know I have been a big promoter of Tebow. But I am first and for-most a huge Broncos fan I am already on the Orton bandwagon and trying to convince myself that a better OL, running game, and so productive TE’s will help his 3rd down, fourth quarter, and red-zone issues. His game and personality bore me to tears but that is fine if we win. Worse than that is if KO doesn’t win, perhaps by no fault of his own, he will be booed out of town.

people have noticed. but have ou also noticed that by going with the 3rd squad he gets more reps? more reps = more practice.. hes sharing reps with the rookie whos reportedly not getting a lot of reps but orton and quin are splitting first time reps more evenly. maybe theres a reason hes with 3rd team for more reps atm?
by Randall Ewing on Jul 31, 2011 3:04 PM MDT up reply actions
Now that is justification I can buy into.

True
Also hopefully he’ll be spending more time with them, so developing connections with the younger guys matters more to Tebow than Orton or Quinn. And reps are reps, getting practice and working the routes is better than nothing.

Thats not true OCB....there is a theory out there they are deliberately putting him there to tighten up what he is doing and to make him earn the starting tole..
word from camp was he was the best of the QB’s yesterday with the worse WR’s. Think about it…you want to develop a guy quickly…..if he is making some of the best plays with the worst players, what will he do when he starts linking up with the 1’s….and he is getting in groove with Julius Thomas.
On Orton, he hs looked good, but he is locking on to Lloyd again (thus why Champ is making so many plays) and missing other open WR’s.
Quinn has improved alot…stoked to hear that as Quinn has been working hard.
Its only just begun.

Is it Free Agency yet? Wake me up when it starts!
Best move for me has to be trading Gaffney.
As much as I liked him and questioned the move at first, I’ve had time to think about the move and it’s brilliant.
We took a 30 year old possession receiver set to make a decent chunk of money and traded him for an athletic Defensive Lineman with a nice upside. Really nice move by Xanders.

Personally, that's the worst move so far
But time will truly tell, so let’s wait and see.

Really? Interesting. How so Chris?

I can understand the Gaff was 30
But he was a starter, and will start in Washington, while Jarmon barely made the squad the past two years, and I’m not sure where the upside comment comes from, he has underperformed since entering the league, and it showed in how his play on the field.
To me it comes down to this, we traded a starter for a backup-at-best. But I hope Jarmon will prove me wrong.

This is a tricky poll
because people see “best” differently. Prater was a must, Woodyard was highly desirable, but Nick is right, trading Gaffney who is 30 and even though a solid, reliable receiver, was due to lose his position to one of the other up and coming younger receivers. Jarmon has a lot of upside and meets the Broncos biggest need on DL, a guy who can play DT and rotate at DE. Most everyone has been clamoring for the Broncos to fill that need and maybe even better ones will be signed soon, but so far it is the best of the choices listed, which are all good moves. If Aubrayo Franklin gets signed or Ty Warren, this list is obsolete.

pardon the spelling errors. All I’m saying is give tebow a chance to shine and sign dt’s this not rocket science. If bowlen doesn’t have money sign free agent’s sell the team. We already know he has memory lose. Bowlen got cutler trade when we knwo for fact he called pat two time. Check the article for ur self. http://www.examiner.com/sports-in-denver/broncos-struggles-could-be-internal
Fairly conflicting article with misinformation
Bowlen’s health is no doubt deteriorating but I failed to see where the article mentioned anything about Cutler and you citing that as “fact” is ridiculous and it’s doubtful many people will read the article based on your post anyway.
Regardless, interesting article and we will see what happens with the ownership. I have always understood that the prior ownership has first right of refusal and since neither Ellis or Elway were previous owners I don’t see how they could fight over the team.
Furthermore, Ellis hired Elway. I don’t see them being at odds but it’s a possibility….

Prater, but....
That is kind of sad. He was just about a given so thus far, anyway, not a lot doing in FA.
I will say that I like what I have heard about Jarmon so this could prove to be an excellent move and while Gaff was great trading him was a good decision as Nick said previously. However, I knew little (okay, nothing) about Jarmon prior to the trade, so I am not going to pick that one…..
What? Signing Anderson and McBean aren't the best moves?
On the bright side, Demaryius Thomas’ INITIALS are DT. Does that count for anything?

None Of The Above.
Tick!
Long distance love affairs are always the most poignant.
This is the 1st off season in a long time where i can say I like ALL of our moves. WOW.
Let’s start by not blundering? Yes I like this beginning.
I voted Prater, we’re so lucky to have found him but all of the moves without the reach or obviously idiotic move we’re so used to…. WINNING!

None of the moves have been terrible, for sure
It remains to be seen if they are really good or not, either. Low key – wasn’t expecting that at DT, at least… I keep waiting to hear who else is coming in…
I’m the only guy that voted for Ryan “15-yard” McBean. What’s up with that.
None of these moves are particularly good or bad. Prater and Woodyard were no brainers.
Gaffney was a decent WR so that DE better be an upgrade over my boy McBean.
"Well at least we picked a good year to suck" said Pat Bowlen after countersigning Von Miller's rookie contract.
Best part about the McBean signing
The best part about the McBean signing is getting another season of Horvil Tiki’s voice talking about, “Oh Snap the McBean Sandwich”

were all been had by elway's the shinny rings
The problem is at the top its start with joe ellis who runs the show. Bowlen I believe does not know where he is! Let alone run the broncos.
DP much?
We have one of the best owners in football. He has early stage dementia…. What’s a brother goin’ do? This might be an issue with running our team but let’s show some respect. Give me a break.
And Elway, yeah he hasn’t meant much to this franchise. He was lucky to be on the team when we took 5 trips to the SB. I was a little skeptical when we hired him but by all accounts he has worked his tail off and is doing an incredible job.

What is sad IMO
Is that “keeping the status quo in place” ends up with more votes than “making a change”. This is how poor teams keep getting #1-#5 picks in the draft -- not how they improve and get to the playoffs/SB.
Can I now change my answer to TE Rosario?
Somewhat kidding, good addition as it wont force the rookie tight ends into too big of a role yet.
Missed this, it would have got my vote
Very solid TE. Nothing spectacular, but better receiver than any vet on the roster. Allows the rookies to grow and we don’t have to hope our extra linemen TEs have to actually catch much.
Broncos new pass rush Von Miller + Elvis "DOOM" Dumervil = DRILLERS! Because that is what they will be doing to opposing QBs. Ahhh yeah!
I want to say how awesome a particular Rockies player is and that he will be the MVP, but the last time I mentioned it in my sig he went out with an injury, so, GO PLAYER WHO IS SO AWESOME!
I have to go with Prater
I was speaking with a friend at a wedding Saturday and we were discussing Adam Vinateri’s success in helping New England and Indy win championships. I am a kicker fan, because I played kicker in high school and we won a state championship but kickers are really important and we’re lucky to have Prater!

I voted Prater too.

I like what the Broncos are doing even without getting a top tier DT...
I lkie the Gaffney for Jarmon trade, we may reap benefits from that one…I don’t look at ‘our’ signees as options in the poll. Just the facts mam, just the facts…
The Broncos just signed TE Daniel Fells to a one year contract...6'4 272lbs!
They ain’t bullsh!tin’ about making our running game a~ GO!
Told ya!

If John Fox brings nothing else to the Broncos
He will bring a good running game and a solid defense. I can live with that!

How many TEs can we keep?
Gronk is out for sure. I have to believe that Virgil Green will be on the PS and 1 of Fells, Rosario, and Quinn will be cut or traded.
Thoughts?
Apparently we are going to give
10 TE’s a chance and 21 WR’s along with 33 Running Backs all a chanc eon making the roster…DT’s prolly just 3

Solid 3-man rotation....
Thomas, McBean, and Big Vick. They will move clockwise. RDT, LDT, out for a play and repeat. Lol.

I didn’t mention bc I thought he was a lock to make the roster. Probably not a lock although that would still be the expectation….

Tight Ends
Can any of these tight ends play defensive tackle? Just saying. I think Shannon Sharpe is available, looks like he’s still in shape
