Denver Broncos Sign DT Marcus Thomas to a Deal

Breaking News: DT Marcus Thomas signs with the #Broncosless than a minute ago via TweetDeck Favorite Retweet Reply

Thank You!!!  Well there you go Bronco Country. The front office has finally signed a defensive tackle!!!  Even if it was one we were potentially about to lose.

This is definitely a step in the right direction, but I sure would like to see this team add some more linemen on both sides of the ball.  Depth on the offensive side of the ball and hopefully some potential starters or at least rotational players on defense.

Go Broncos!

Whew

I was starting to think we were gonna run a 2-6-3 or some sort of arena front. I like M. Thomas and think he is gonna improve……hope he is gonna improve. Well it is a start.

I like Marcus Thomas

And I’m excited to see what he can do in his natural position now that he’s a vet.

We need some more bodies at DT, but this is a good signing in my opinion.

I don't think it's a matter of anything left in the tank

Jamal Anderson is not an old dude. He just never panned out as the pass rushing end some had proclaimed….. as far as a run stuffer though, he’s excellent in that dept.

Thats one, and McBean is two.....Like both of these young men...make us proud...

now we need to add at least one more….I’m even ok if it’s a Derek Landri type, but would love to see somewhat of a more proven player. I’m waiting to be pleasantly surprised…………still waiting.

Broncos forever.....bring on the season.

by J-DOG on Jul 31, 2011 6:53 PM MDT reply actions

Right now McBean and Thomas are our best options as starters. Need more from somewhere.

A little nasty on defense would be nice.

I'd love to see us sign Ty Warren

Even if he’s not a full time starter right off the bat (because of his hip), he will bring much needed veteran presence/leadership to the middle of our D. When he gets 100%, he steps in immediately as the starter.

I think

that we need two healthy TEs on the field at the same time a lot this year as it will be our base set. The more bodies the better. Cut downs at TE could be a b**ch.

please convince me

I really do not mean to sound sarcastic which this will BUT, I am lost on why people are happy about this. Is it because its a defensive tackle in general or is it because you really think he is a starting tackle? Again I do not mean this as a negative comment. I really would like to hear input. I just think this guy was cut because he was not all that great. Even when we played the 4-3 he did not really make a make for himself as other tackles drafted in his close draft round and point taken in that round. So now we take him back and did we really do anything to improve or are we just happy we took a defensive tackle? Please tell me how now he is better than before seeing he has shown nothing since he was not playing in a 4-3 this past year? So there is no tape on him of late showing us why he would be so much better. I’m not looking for this to be a knock by any means to anyone who is in favor of this pick up. I just would like to hear why some are in favor. Thanks so much for the constructive input.

He was drafted young and just needed time to develop

but instead we switched to 3-4 and messed up everything.

I expect he’ll develop into a solid starter under Fox who has made do with far inferior tament.

by VR92 on Jul 31, 2011 7:28 PM MDT up reply actions

I doubt too much money

Not a lot of teams have been interested in him as of late. I think we could get him for cheaper then you think. SF will give him a lowball offer if they indeed choose to re-sign him and I think that we could up the price a bit and outbid SF to get Franklin, plus Franklin would get much more playing time in Denver, being a starter instead of a rotational player in SF…

by DenverWonder on Jul 31, 2011 7:41 PM MDT up reply actions

I’m happy about this. I thought Thomas had his best season in 2010. That is impressive considering how crappy the coaching was and that he was playing in a 3-4 when that really isn’t suited for him.

"Well at least we picked a good year to suck" said Pat Bowlen after countersigning Von Miller's rookie contract.

by McGeorge on Jul 31, 2011 7:31 PM MDT reply actions

I think way too much stock is put into coaching around here

coaching ain’t gonna make this 2nd to worst defense in the NFL into a top 15 top 10 and it ain’t gonna make all the players better either…

A baseball park is the one place where a man's wife doesn't mind his getting excited over somebody else's curves

by waterboy31321 on Jul 31, 2011 7:34 PM MDT up reply actions

You want an example of coaching?

2009, Mike Nolan. He had less talent than the broncos do now and made them into a top 10 defense. He leaves and makes the fins into a top defense. Another example: Rex Ryan. You take him off the jets and they’re defense is average. He’s a mastermind. John Fox is very similar and Dennis Allen learned from another top notch d-cordinator. So yes I do believe you can put a lot of stock into coaching because you can have all the talent you want, but if the coaching sucks, it’s not happening. I fully expect a similar defense that Mike Nolan had—hopefully without the calapse. Plus there is way more talent on this defense than there was in 09.

You can even look up the stats on this one

Broncos total defense in 2009— ranked 7th in the NFL. 2010, No Mike Nolan—last place.

Jets before Rex Ryan, 2008, average—17th. 2009 with Rex Ryan, number one rated defense in the NFL. Even last year Jets- 3rd in the NFL

The last three years this what John Fox’s defense’s ranked—against better teams as well. 2008-16 2009- 8 2010-18 (had agruable three playoff teams last year plus lost Peppers).

So right there is example of what coaching can do.

I'm really happy we retained Thomas,

now we just need to sign at least one solid proven starter. I’m not sure about “Lil Vick.” I’m guessing that the coaches told him to lose all that weight for a reason though…hopefully.

Anyway, I think if we can get one solid starter our d-line will be much better than last year. Why? Coaching, scheme, and much improved LBer play.

by Mile High ThundaDownUnda on Jul 31, 2011 8:19 PM MDT reply actions

Essentially we need to replace or improve Bannan.

He played freakin good for us last year and I’m bummed that he got away.

Wow, that's a scary prospect.

They signed a guy to a long term contract and he morphed into a shadow of himself over the offseason without direction to do so?? Scary…we’ll see, if he starts piling weight back on you’ll know that EFX smacked him around and told him to go camp out at Maccas.

Who knows how Lil Vick will play this year, he’s a diffferent player now.

I, too, agree with his agent’s comments on Thomas being a much better fit for the new scheme than he was in the 3-4. And he fared pretty well there. I think this is a great return for us.

I'm happy we brought in another backup from a really bad defense (sarcasm)

Does he help? Sure, he’s a warm body. Will he play better in a 4-3? Sure, probably. Is he enough? No. There are 31 other teams out there, and their fan bases, that wouldn’t give two craps about signing this guy. But he was a backup on the Broncos last year, and so now all the sudden we should be really excited that he’s going to be an all-pro under Fox and a new system. Child please.

Cool. We got another serviceable backup DT. It’s like signing jake delhomme without us having Tebow or Orton already. He’s a backup and there are no starters. That is all.

I think Bannan isn't coming back, Nate Irving will start at MLB and Tim Tebow starts at QB. Oh, and VonDoom should combine for 20-25 sacks.

by Rodney A on Jul 31, 2011 8:37 PM MDT reply actions

I love when we sign the guys we draft (as long as they are worth signing). Good way to start building a real team.

Marcus Thomas showed lots of Flashes

Playing out of position last year. He also seems to play best when he is attacking the backfield. Seems like a major upgrade to what we had yesterday and the only DL I was interested in (including Vickerson) before we started any signing.

I'm right 97% of the time. Who cares about the other 4%?

by HippoJohn on Jul 31, 2011 8:52 PM MDT reply actions

We are in yr 1 of re-building

I’m on board with most of you that I wanted to draft a big DT or sign one early but those times are over, so what are we looking at? Basically not repeating the past and acknowledging we are re-building. This means not over spending on free agents that are castoffs or as Cowherd puts it "the girl at the bar every night you don’t want to marry’.
We are committing to one year deals with the idea that we build from within and through the draft. How many free agents do the Steelers and Packers sign for big money? Exactly. So, while at first I was annoyed at our lack spending, it bodes well for the future.
I still question or CB depth and DT obviously remains a concern. Not loving the idea of Anderson and Warren converting from DEs to DTs if they were to make it here.

Big DTs who are light on their feet are hard to find and are worth the wait as they grow into their bodies and learn the game.
