I called it yesterday. Orton is what he is.
All the doomsday about Tebow had me worried that he had regressed. My eyes told me the NFL has regressed thanks to the rustiness of the lockout, but Tebow continues to do what he did in 2010. Tim makes a lot of plays and moves the ball. A tiger can’t change his stripes. He is not a pocket QB and I don’t think he’ll ever be one in the classic mold.
Orton continues to do what he does as well. Orton fails in the red zone because he is too risk adverse and not athletic enough to make plays outside the pocket. Get 11 defenders inside the 5 yard line and Orton will do what he does better than any other QB in the NFL… throw the ball away. Then Prater can kick a chip shot FGs. Like Tebow, Orton is a zebra that can’t change his stripes. If Orton is starting for Denver this year and we don’t sub in Tebow for goal to go situations, you fantasy football dweebs need to draft Prater early since he’ll get a lot of easy kicks and we’ll continue to have an offense that ranks between around 22nd in the NFL in points per game.
Quinn looked good to me, but a 1st round QB in his fifth year vs a bunch of non-NFL defenders should go 8-14 with a TD vs undrafted rookies that won’t ever see an NFL field past August.
Nice to have NFL ball, but the lockout is going to lead to some really ugly ball in September. Lots of rust all over the field. Nate Jones and the backup O-linemen are worthless, so is Ball. Really like what I saw from Hunter, Vaughn, both kickers, Johnson at RB, Dell, Anderson and both backup QBs.
This Bronco team will have more depth except at O-line and RB if they somehow keep Ball.

See, Orton is risk adverse, but Tebow is too risky.
When Tebow starts to figure out how to balance the risk, he will overtake Orton on the depth chart. I just don’t think that will happen in 2011.

I think it will happen in 2011l. And I think it will more so because Orton’s shortcomings in the red zone will cost us too many games and Fox will have no choice.
By no means did Tebow blow my socks off last night. He will get himself hurt playing that like that. He is super rusty (as were most of the players on both teams). Brand Quinn’s first drive was brutal. His throw over Anderson’s head was the worst of the night.
Unless our running game can consistently score TDs, teams will do what they do. Force Orton to make plays in the red zone by sending blisters and making Kyle uncomfortable. As this happens, Kyle will do what he always does… jog sideways, slowly, and chuck the ball out of bounds near the endzone. Kind of close to a WR so as to not draw a flag.
It’s not obvious to Kyle’s fan boys, but everyone else knows Orton is really easy to defend in the red zone. He’s been had. Even a defensive idiot like Wink could figure out how to stop Orton in the red zone. Send pressure, get him moving and watch the passes sail into the stands.

Once again McGeorge has nailed it.
And he gets the award for the fastest signature change in MHR history. At 9:29 it was Kyle Orton = FG and then at 10:01 it was Kyle Orton + red zone = FG. For the record, both formulas are mathematically correct.
I’m not saying Tebow is as polished between the 20’s as Orton is right now. But Tebow showed that he will not a Chris Simms type disaster if we throw him in and see what he can do. And this was with second string players all over the field. Imagine what he might be able to do with starting OL protecting him…
Oh, you were finished? Oh, well, allow me to retort!
--Jules Winnfield
That would be an interesting situation
Orton between the 20’s…
Tebow doing the redzone.
I think Tebow forces Defenses to change in the redzone more than anyone except maybe Vick.
I wasn’t a Gator fan and have a bad memory how did Leak and Tebow split the plays?
What would be interesting is to see how Orton reacts, in his contract year, to getting pulled in the red zone so Tebow can make the glory plays.
Orton ain’t getting paid in 2012 if he doesn’t get the TD passes, but just accumulates yards. That’s a fact.
The NFL is Madden with robot players. Orton has his own goals that won’t coincide with Denver’s if we are subbing in Tebow for goal to go plays. I’d expect to see more long passes from Orton in an attempt to get the home run TDs.
Kyle Orton + red zone = FG
True - but I say team is greater than player
Screw what Orton or Tebow wants. Fox should do what’s best for Denver this year and into the future.
Of course Fox should take my opinion into consideration too :)
Fox will do what is best for Denver, but Orton will do what is best for Orton’s 2012 contract. And I don’t blame Kyle for that on bit. I also think Kyle throws a nice deep ball. He just sucks in the red zone. He made a bunch of nice bombs for Lloyd and Gaff last season.
Kyle Orton + red zone = FG
love your new signature
I really would like to see a break down of visits to the redzone and resulting points for orton and average for the league.
I know he had 20 td’s last year and 9 interceptions but i think you are right that a lot of the td’s came from longer passes outside the redzone.
The last thing I’ve ever been on this site is a parrot. I think my stance on McD proved that out quite nicely. My facts are fact.
Orton’s offense was ranked 22nd in the NFL in points per game (19.4) at the time of his injury or benching or whatever in 2010. If it weren’t for the 49 point outburst vs KC, that number drops to (16.9).

That’s the way it has always been since Ortons been there. If us fans know Orton is easy to defend in the redzone, wouldn’t you think that other teams that actual study that kind of stuff on a regular basis would too? I’ve read your comments since you were with the DP and they are normally spot on.

Brad come on… The preseason is not about winning. Never has been.
It’s situational football and learning your team. Fox was satisfied that his running game was working so he wanted to see the red zone passing. He saw it. 0-3. It will probably be a point of emphasis in practice this week.
That is the point of preseason games. Learn what works and what needs to be fix or changed.

i still don’t understand why you wouldn’t have tebow try to run the two minute offense at the end of the first half. field postition? protecting the lead? we’re talkin about PRACTICE, not a real game. we’re talkin practice…

Orton had 17 redzone td passes in 2009 and was well on his way to matching or surpassing those numbers in 2010 but he didnt play the last 3 games and that is counting the two turds he played before he sat out .
Its not surprising though that you threw out redzone claims and then jumped to total points which proves my point about just throwing stuff out there .
There is only so many passing tds that are gonna be thrown inside the redzone . Orton is not the cause of our troubles in the redzone the inability to get that one yard via the ground is .
I look at those numbers and laugh because it shows just how mental some of you are when it comes to this stuff .
Why dont you eliminate every game from every team in the league where they scored more than 30 points ? Or are you arbitrarily gonna remove a game just from Ortons ?
Our point totals dont seem to be devoid of passing tds but devoid rushing tds, special teams tds and defensive tds .
top teams in terms of passing tds per game 2010 after 13 games
added total ppg in bold after 13 games ()
1 New England 2.2 (32 ppg )
2 New Orleans 2.1 (25 ppg)
3 Indianapolis 2.0 (27 ppg)
4 San Diego 2.0 (27 ppg)
5 NY Giants 1.9 (26ppg)
6 Kansas City 1.9 (25 ppg)
7 Green Bay 1.9 (25 ppg)
8 Dallas 1.8 (24 ppg)
9 Philadelphia 1.8 (29 ppg)
10 Atlanta 1.8 (25 ppg)
11 Denver 1.8 (21 ppg)
we were the most inexperienced and unbalanced team on that list but we there are to claim that Orton somehow responsible for our offense not scoring more points is ridiculous considering how one dimensional we actually were.
This claim that Orton struggles in the redzone or that he is the problem with our scoring offense is a ridiculous and unfounded and comes strictly from the same group of people who made claims about noodle arm and other crap .
That its gone on this long is testament to just how much some of you hate the guy
by Hoopforia on Aug 12, 2011 12:18 PM MDT up reply actions 3 recs
I’ve never called him a noddle arm. I think he throws a very pretty bomb and did so several times in 2010. I also love his play action fakes.
But he is super easy to defend in the red zone. He averaged just 1 TD in the red zone in 2010 and we all know McD was calling more passes than runs. Kyle had far more opportunities to throw red zone TDs thanks to McD’s unbalanced play calling. Yet somehow you suggest our lack of balance should be credited to Orton? How? We didn’t elect to run very ofter so Orton had a lot more chances to get red zone TDs via the pass. And all he could muster was was 13 TDs? His rank is 17th in this metric, which works out well because I’ve been telling people at MHR he was between the 15th and 20th best QB in the NFL for the past two years. Here is a good example to add to my collection.
I don’t hate Orton, I just know him much better than you do.
Kyle Orton + red zone = FG
But since it will make you feel better and since I always keep it real. Tebow has a long way to go. He needs reps, lots of reps, but the lockout may have killed his 2011 hopes of starting.
Tim should be our goal to go QB, but I don’t see how he goes from that last night to starter in 4 weeks.
6-7 for 91 yards tells me the kid is a real player with ample potential, but my eyes tell me he’s still too raw to be an NFL starter on anything but an awful team. I’m not sure we are awful, but I don’t think so. Overall, Denver has that mediocre 7-9 look to me.
Kyle Orton + red zone = FG
I still don't think Orton is as dynamic in the redzone as Tebow
Making our play calling more predictable and easier to defend. Which affects both passing and rushing.
Hoopforia, I appreciate your analysis, thanks for the input, but I
disagree with with your final assessment. The problem is, I’ve always felt, is that the Orton v. Tebow thing really cannot be judged by #‘s only. The only thing with Tebow, and I have a feeling it will be this way for his whole career, is how much did he win? This will be his legacy, not passing records. We don’t try to compare TT to John Elway as a QB because JE had such a superior arm, but I think JE is precisely the best QB to compare TT to because of comparable drives to win, leadership qualities and the will to never give in. These are the most profound traits for a QB to have to succeed. Elway was not an “efficient” passer for a number of years when he first came into the league, he would take my breath away when a play broke down and he did his little backward curl around to escape a pass rusher, run horizontally and then fire a pass on a line 40 yds, between two defenders for a completion. Then 2 plays later over/under throw a guy in the endzone because he was not as good yet at simply setting up and throwing a short to medium pass with touch. Tebows scramble at the end of the first half was being ridiculed for being out of control and crazy while the whole time I was having flash-backs of JE! Did we notice that TT completed the pass after all was said and done? He did not complete the pass because of the penalties or because he crossed the line of scrimmage, no, he completed it because he refused to give up on the play and made a nice play to top it all off. The fact that he passed the ball after going across the line of scrimmage was no dumber than, say, lining up behind the guard to take the snap instead of behind the center. Yet the last guy I saw do just that made a fairly nice career for himself. I guess what’s frustrating me more than anything in this whole KO v. TT scenario is that playing TT is the only way to truly know and it’s going to take a coach with real guts and real understanding of what leadership is, what makes a football team great (beyond the numbers) and step out and take the chance. I have a real fear that TT is not going to be given that opportunity here in Denver because his numbers don’t add up in practice, his passing mechanics are not judged to be good/pretty enough and we end up sending him on his way only to see him have a great, championship career somewhere else because all he really does, and all he really wants to do is win…

Orton Sucked on 3rd down too
In 2010 Orton only completed 50% if his passes on 3rd down which was 8th worst in the NFL. His passer rating was 58 on 3rd down. A quarterback that can’t play on 3rd down or in the red zone is not going to win games.

Yawn!
I can’t respect anyone who beleives Tebow has IT as a NFL QB. You’re just like the Bears fans who thought Grossman was the one. You’re full of IT! Orton is our starter and will do just fine in 2011.
If by fine you mean a 22nd ranked scoring offense, a 5-11 record and two or three games missed due to injury….. then yes, Orton will be fine in 2011. Just like he was fine in 2010 and fine in 2009.
Kyle has amassed a fine record of 11-17 as our starting QB. I’m sure he’ll continue to bang out bang out that fine .392 win percentage has has cookin as a Bronco.
Kyle Orton is the finest QB we’ve ever had with a career losing record.
Kyle Orton + red zone = FG
It's really getting old!
There’s not one QB in the NFL that could have won with the 2010 Broncos. Swisscheese for prptection, no running game, worst defense in the league, terrible special temas/field position all year, no threat at TE, and McD! Repeat for the second half of 2009 and add in playing injured. See Steve Young in Tampa!
LOL at you!
Steve Young > Kyle Orton. You’re too funny.
It’s also getting old hearing what a great player Orton “could be” if this and that and this and that and etc fall into place. Kyle Orton and another 100 or so QBs out there fall into that category.
I’d give anything to see Orton behind Denver’s backup O-line just to hear the squeals and whining out of your camp. That excuse machine would be far better than the one above.
You know another problem with our 2010 Broncos. Spotty play from Orton, especially when it mattered most. Dude got to throw the ball all the time, had a QB guru as his coach, a pass happy play caller and one of the best group of WRs in the NFL. Boo friggin hooo. Would have been nice if Orton had risen the play of his teammates instead of falling to their level.
Kyle Orton + red zone = FG
Have some cheese with your sour grapes!
No matter how you try to spin it…KO is our starting QB…the competition is over…the adults are now back in charge of the team..I’m not going ot badmouth Tebow(he’s an easy target)..it’s time for you all to suck it up and admit you were wrong about your guy. Go Broncos!
KO is the starting QB and he is also nothing more than a stop gap. A place holder for Tebow or the guy we draft in 2012.
Tebow isn’t ready to start. Orton will never be ready to be a playoff winning QB. Kyle’s 2011 season is his audition for someone else.
The one thing I do know is that I’m right about Orton. He is nothing more than a stop gap QB. A short term place holder for another guy with actual promise.
Kyle Orton + red zone = FG
McG
If Tebow was Elway’s guy he would be starting and Orton would be playing for the Fins. There is no future for Tebow as a QB in Denver. Elway will draft his own guy. Elway was a natural and that’s what he will try to draft next year.
If Tebow were ready, he’d be starting. Tebow isn’t ready. He is also just 23 years old and starting his second season.
Orton isn’t playing for Miami because Miami didn’t want to sign him to a long term deal. Elway would have traded Kyle to the Dolphins for peanuts, but Miami didn’t really want Kyle for anything more than one year and they didn’t want to give up much to have him. At least Miami showed some interest, unlike all the other teams. Orton has so little trade value, Elway’s hands are tied. He doesn’t want to give the guy away for nothing when Tebow isn’t ready. Funny that you can’t see that. Actually, just sad.
If Orton is our QB all year (laughable I know, he’ll never make it thru a full season healthy), we’ll be picking a QB in round 1, likely in the top 10. I agree with you here.
Kyle Orton + red zone = FG
The Broncos could have traded Orton without getting Orton involved.
Give us a 7th round pick..you pick up his salary for 2011…do with him what you want after the season. Done deal!
My view exactly. If we wonder who EFX
was looking towards to be our QB, the attempt to trade Orton anywhere was evidence that they were ready to go with TT. This also tells me the QB competition may not be as “settled” as everyone wants to make it out to be. I thought, at the very least TT played equal to KO Thrs., an argument could be made he outperformed KO. This coupled with the reality that EFX was prepared to have TT as our starter when the trade talks were going on tells me TT still has a legit shot at starting the year as our starting QB.

three solid QBs and some team out there that will be looking for one any minute now, whether it’s poor play or because of injury. maybe quinn becomes trade bait? three guys with this much to offer seems like overkill at the QB position. quinn’s becoming a high end luxury third stringer, which is unnecessary.

I sure he was interacting
w/ other players, he sure wasn’t in the QB clique though.
Release the Tebow!
I'm really amazed at some of the Quinn love I'm seeing around here today
He went 8/14 and a TD against 11 guys who probably all get cut in a couple weeks, and suddenly he’s amazing..? What? He’s been in the league for several years now. If he had enough ability to be a serious starter, he would’ve shown it by now. And he’s the only QB we had out there who never really faced any pressure at all.
Just got to see the game. Some brief observations.
1.) Our starting D gave up far too many big runs. Let’s hope that tightens up before game 1 or we are looking at another McFadden debacle.
2.) Our running game and starting O-line looks great. Second string O-line…not so much. We have no depth. Moreno looks great for one game. Let’s hope he stays healthy.
3.) Orton was the same old Orton. He did seem to be completely focused on Lloyd and no other. His throw to Decker was OK but was thrown a bit behind. His 2 throws in the red zone were terrible. In his defense he threw a lot of terrible passes towards Lloyd last year that Brandon saved his bacon on.
4.) Tebow will not stand a chance behind that second string line. They stink. When he had time to throw he was very good. Too bad he didn’t have much time to throw.
5.) Quinn is what a 4 year vet and former starter? As a former #1 pick he should destroy a pack of 3rd stringers. But hey a good nght for a good guy.
Personaly I would like to see more of the running game. I would also like to see our starting D stop the run. Felix Jones could have killed u all day.
Life's too short for bad tone!
I think Fox, because he's an older, experienced
NFL coach was not coaching to win Thrs, but coaching to get better. He running scenarios trying to improve in the areas where we were weak. Perfect example was having KO pass 3 times inside the 6. All of us saw that our OL was dominating and could have punched it in, Fox included, not to work on there… passing inside the RZ?….another story altogether.
