Denver Broncos Kicker Matt Prater Charged With DUI
UPDATE:The Denver Broncos on Friday released the following statement on kicker Matt Prater:
"Our organization is disappointed with the poor judgment shown by Matt Prater on Aug. 2. This matter, which was addressed with the team last week, continues to be thoroughly reviewed internally."
Denver Broncos kicker Matt Prater was charged with a DUI on August 2nd according to court records as per the Denver Post, and he has also been charged with fleeing the scene of an accident. The Broncos were obviously aware of this as they have kept Steven Hauschka on the roster, and could be posturing for Prater to miss about four games, or whatever Roger Goodell decides to do with him.
Even though Prater was given a raise of more than triple his salary from last year, he opted not to call a cab, and made a poor choice. Prater is not the only Bronco in legal trouble right now, and the team is likely monitoring this situation closely.
Prater is one of the better kickers in the NFL, but Hauschka proved at the end of last year that he can also be a solid kicker.

Thats where Ortons bottle of Jack went...
It wasn't him Charlie, it was you. Remember that night in the Garden you came down to my dressing room and said, "Kid, this ain't your night. We're going for the price on Wilson." Ya remember that? 'This ain't your night.' My night I could of taken Wilson apart. ~ Brando aka Terry Malloy

In Colorado, DUI is Bigger than a DWI
DWI means that you were at least .05% BAC. DUI is least .08%. Since he left the scene of an accident, I’m sure he was automatically charged with DUI.
That being said, I will chalk it up as the guy making a mistake, not a trend here. There has never been another incident in all of his time of being a public figure.
I know plenty of good people who made the mistake of driving when they shouldn’t have, and gotten a DUI. Most of them learn from their mistake and grew from it. Let’s see if Prater learns from this. That will show what kind of person he is.

This is pathetic.
Most, if not all NFL clubs have a policy and procedure in place for this. They have a program that allows players who have had too much to drink to call a number and be brought home COMPLETELY ANONYMOUSLY. I know the Jets have one, and if I remember correctly, I think it’s something every team HAS to offer, and they all do happily.
Matt Prater, you are no longer Money Prater to me. You’re another douche bag that thought he would be fine after drinking too much. You better thank your lucky stars no one was hurt, and you’d better serve that suspension without complaint. Moron.

This is different than a stop where a guy failed to wait 5 extra minutes after leaving the bar
He had an accident, fled the scene and apparently failed the test after cops caught up with him. Even if you have the logic that people on the border line should get off, this isn’t one of those instances.

Fleeing scene has broad range of meaning with DUI
The Fleeing the Scene charge could be problematic if he in fact fled and was apprehended. It could also be something more simple, such as he hit a curb and drove into a nearby parking lot to check damage and was then encountered by police. The police may have given the “Fleeing” charge if he passed the field sobriety test and they suspected he was under the influence – this would allow them to book him and get a blood test. Time will tell… still dumb move…

Hauschka will fill in fine while Prater sits in a corner and thinks about what he is done but where I’m from you at least give someone a chance to learn from their mistakes. Prater is a solid kicker and I don’t know if you have checked but players of his caliber aren’t exactly flying all over the waiver wire. I say give him a shot and later if he turns out to be our version of “Pacman” then send him on his way

I’m very cross at Prater – I don’t expect my sports heroes to behave like saints, but neither do I wish to support a bunch of criminals. Drinking and driving is not evil, but its dumb and it shows a lack of intelligence. Most importantly it puts the lives of others at risk.
I would hope Colorado’s justice system includes provisions for showing educating those convicted of DUI offences the dangers they can cause, perhaps by showing these idiots the real human cost of driving while drunk. Here in Britain we often force the offender to go to the morgue and see for real the victims. It’s quite succesful at preventing reoffending.
I also believe though in forgiveness and people learning from their mistakes. So I want to see Prater punished both on and off the field. If he genuinely learns his lesson then I think we should support his return to the team on condition that he never does it again.

How I rank it right now: 1. Orton 2. Quinn 3. Tebow
I think we have two solid vets in Orton and Quinn. Apparently Henne stunk up the joint for Miami. If I were a team in desperate need for a QB I’d be dying for Mallett right now. But Orton can step in today and contribute, especially with his history with Marshall. I’d be comfortable with Quinn running the 1st team for the season. Tebow needs work.

With Coach Zorro on our side, we will slice opponents to ribbons. Tim Tebow gives me hope and I already have faith and charity in my heart! I see a propitious future rife with Lombardis for our Broncos!

Things I don't get
Why does anyone, now-a-days, even contemplate driving after having even one drink? My dad will drive after having a beer with dinner and I just don’t get it. A guy I know through the gym was just pulled over after having had three beers and got away with it. Its like using your phone whilst driving, we all know its dangerous yet some idiots just do it anyway. I can’t understand why someone would even consider driving after drinking for me the risks far outweigh the gains.
One more thing I don’t get. OK so he’s an idiot kicker but he’s a professional sportsman and was in the middle of a training camp for what we’re told is the most intense and dangerous sport and he’s out drinking! It worries me about what the other atheletes on our team are doing to their bodies when they should be preparing them to play into February. Screw it, if I was GM, I wouldn’t be cutting him because he got caught DUI, I’d cut him because he was drinking.
OK rant over but as someone who used to drink but doesn’t anymore, I find these things very strange
hooker
It sounds like he was with a hooker and paniced. He was driving the hooker to the hotel it sounds like and backed into the car, drew a crowd, and tried to run away. He still took the hooker to the hotel so he wasn’t thinking rationally. Atheletes think they are bullet proof hence they are not careful unless they are mature
Hey, he's a kicker....
just trying to get it through the “uprights” one more time!

Good job Matty.
Such an idiotic move.
I’m broke as a joke and even I can muster up the cost of a cab on the weekend.
What a chump.
What's that saying?
Oh yeah, “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone”.
So who’s casting first?
Of course he did a bad thing…..just saying chill on the morality police stuff.
Sounds like he had a bit of a wild night. Read the DP article. He back into another car while at hotel. He had an “employee” from Shotgun Willie’s in his car and was looking to get a room.
Hopefully he learns a lesson and straightens it out.

He had a hooker that acts as a stripper during the day.
Yeah, about that morality stuff….

Because i HIGHLY DOUBT
that he was giving the bouncer a ride to his hotel for a slumber party.

Hauschka
Good thing we have Hauschka. Orton’s about as useful as teets on a bull in the red zone. Field Goals just might be our bread and butter.

Shotgun Willie's, still the place to go...
I know this story should be making me upset, but I can’t help noticing that drunk-driving aside, our kicker is a pretty awesome party. Next time he picks up a stripper, let’s hope he has the smarts to call a car service.

Or just have someone chauffer him in that ridiculous Cadillac parked out front at Willie's.

Haven’t posted on here ever since the end of last season.
I do lurk in the shadows and the fact at how many people start going ape over this story is ridiculous.
Did he kill someone?
No.
Did he injure anybody?
No.
Did he make a mistake?
Yes.
Charlesnelson said it right. I doubt anyone on this forum goes by the name ‘Mother Teresa’.
You people are not saints. Get that through your head. Who are you to judge another man in his 20’s and on top of the world?
Are you guys saying that you have never done something as bad or worse?
I am sure if we took everyone’s police record on MHR it would be 20 phone books thick. Get off your high horses and stop preaching. I am quite positive some of you have driven home after having one or two beers, if you hit someone or something and you blow anything over 0.0 you will be charged with a DUI. Be thankful it wasn’t anything worse then hitting a PARKED car.
I would have hit a parked car on purpose to go to a hotel room with one of those ladies from Willie’s.
Any movement in history which attempts to perpetuate itself, becomes reactionary.

Judging "us" a bit, no?
He knows the rules regarding the league in which he plays, including fan responses. He admitted it himself. Methinks you feel threatened somehow to post in the above manner. This isn’t about you or I drinking and driving…it is about an NFL player doing it. Its part of being a team..he let his mates down.
he did.
but really, people are saying prater should be released immediately or should’ve been cut just for drinking. t’s a pretty embarrassing evening for prater and he’ll pay for it in a variety of ways, not the least of which is having the whole sordid affair published around the world. he should get punished and he will, but we’re not talking pacman jones here.
I would not agree with releasing him or cutting him,
but I don’t agree with the excusing of the behavior that accompanied this poster’s rant. The precedents have been set……he is going to be suspended at some point.
oops. came back after seeing a diferent post.
Ignore the first sentence on the undertext. Wrong guy.
However, in rereading it, he should become aware that, although it varies from state to state, not one state gives DUI for ‘anything over 0.0’……I think the lowest I have heard of is 0.8. I notice the name. If you are truly in Bosnia, that explains that small slipup. No reason to know the specifics of our laws in that case.
