Feet of clay?

As I turned off the television in January after the last Bronco game I smiled.  The dark cloud caused by the worst season in Bronco history had a silver lining.  I smiled because the team had found a new LEADER.  You could see it on the players faces, hear it in their voices.  Hope.  Armed with the knowledge that Tebow would work harder than any other quarterback to correct his flaws during the offseason and make whatever sacrifice it took to make the team better, I drank deeply of the kool-aid, and verily, it was good.

In March, Woody Paige wrote and article outlining how the leaders of other teams were organizing workouts for their teams during the lockout.  I smiled again.  This would provide Tebow with the perfect opportunity to help the team get a "leg-up" on the competition,  solidify his role as the teams leader, bond with his linemen and receivers,  and allow him to "out work"  the other teams in the league.   To lead his team.

Brian Dawkins organized the Bronco players as many as twenty Broncos made an appearance at one time or another.  Tebow and Orton made an appearance to throw the ball around a little and give an interview.  Brady Quinn was a regular attendee, including the afternoon spent running the stairs with the linemen at Red Rocks.

Tony Romo organized the Dallas Cowboys workouts, regularly attended by 40 players.  Anyone not showing up for any of the workouts needed a pretty good excuse (a note from their mother?).  They worked on plays from the playbook and worked on their football skills.  Check out a Cowboys' blog to learn how much it meant to their players coming together as a team, and their faith in him as their leader.

Tebow stated that hew was working hard at his home - in Florida,  and made some appearances at the Gator camp.  He spent his time on a book tour, attending talk shows , "hob nobbing" with celebrities, and attending charity events for his fan base - in Florida.  He responded to reporters concerns by indicating that he was planing to fly some of the receivers down to his home- in Florida-  to work out (did that ever happen?).

This year, I was excited to attend the first day of training camp.  More than a thousand people and I - Tebow fans all - were disturbed by his performance.   His feet seemed to be leaden, his footwork poor, and some of his passes sailed more than 10 feet  over the receivers head.  Even the faithful came away concerned about the efficacy of his off-season.  Certainly, no progress shown - far from it.

I know, it was a first practice, without full contact or full pads.  I know that  he is a "gamer", not a practice player.  What I found more troubling was the reaction to Tebow from the other players.  Clearly distant, clearly not the relationship that I saw in January.  He completely lost that momentum.

The player that looked good and seemed to have made serious friends on the team (B. Dawkins et al) was Brady Quinn - a regular attendee of the workouts.

The season is young - it was the first practice for Pete's sake, but I came away with a queasy feeling.  I remain a Tebow fan, but the kool-aid does not taste quite as sweet.  I desperately want there  to be the Tebow that  I thought I  saw in January.  However, to squander the opportunity presented to attend and lead the team in the off-season, and his complete lack of improvement has caused me to be concerned that his next verse eyeshade tattoo may be: (Daniel 2:31-33)

Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible.

This image's head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass,
His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay.

You won't push me off the Tebow wagon, but...

by all accounts Brady Quinn has busted his ass to get better and it sounds like he has a legit shot to push for QB1. I am anxious to see the performance of each one in the preseason.

I am not off the wagon either. I

I still want Tebow to be who I thought he was. Who I think he is.

How long is the season?

your probably right about the offseason practicing

Tebow probably shouldve been there more often. I am pretty sure though that some of the wide recievers did come out and meet him in florida.

Good to know.

However, it sounds like penance to assuage guilty feelings over doing what he KNEW to be the right thing. Sort of like bringing home supermarket flowers to your wife after blowing off her anniversary.

U have GOT to B kidding

“penance to assuage guilty feelings?”

What was there to feel guilty about? Did HE lock himself out of the Broncos facilities?

Who is it that is to blame for Tim’s inability to be the first one there, and the last to leave?

The League, and the NFLPA failing to address what needed to be done prior to the end of last season!

They are the only guilty parties that even gave anyone this issue! If they had done their jobs, we wouldn’t even be having this discussion, and the training camp we are seeing, would look entirely different from what it does today!

Nice rant.

You aptly pointed out that the lockout was outside of his control. What he did about it was in his control. That is what concerned me. You know that he should have been here, working with his team. It was a squandered opportunity.

Wrong again!

All he NEEDED 2 do, was to go on with HIS life, in whatever manner that FIT HIS LIFE!

All else only matters to peeps like U, who think that judging another persons responsibilities is the normal thing to do!

Think you missed the point

TT did what was required of him …. but little else. Leaders tend to emerge during the darkest hours. During the depth of the lockout TT was not visable to his team mates. It is about an opportunity lost.

If Tebows life is about book deals, golf tournements and speaking engagments then let him go after those things. If he wants his life to be about being a starting quarterback in the NFL then he needs to be dedicating his life to that proposition instead. I was very impressed with his work ethic leading up to the draft and before the first camps last year. He is a young kid that got distracted. Hopefully he learns the price of distraction and resumes his previous ways.

take Decker for example

he wants a starting job and was all over the place working with everyone and anyone and at all the player held camps. he showed promise last year (as did Tebow) it looks like Decker really chose to embrace his situation

by veggiezaffer on Aug 2, 2011 8:51 PM MDT up reply actions

I must refer U 2 this!

LMAO!

U missed the point! His life, and yours, was all that mattered to either one of U!

U R the 1 that is designated to tell him, or 4 that matter, US, what HE should have done with every moment of HIS TIME? I guess that I should call him and ask him if U did a good job with YOUR schedule!

I am absolutely certain that he will say, “I never met that guy, but, I hope that he made all the right choices, and that everything worked out JUST RIGHT!”

BUT! That’s not what I got from U on the other point of view!

U thought that U knew exactly how TIM Tebow should choose to live his life!

Pretty amazing!

I have many concerns with Tebow as you do...

Everything that you said plus the fact he has happy feet concerns me.

Take his first year and his first game, HAPPY FEET!!!
He was injured for nearly two weeks because of his happy feet.

Can we have him tossing lousy passes, taking off every time he hears foot steps, and getting pummelled as our QB? I’m not a big fan of that.

I’m glad Brady is getting better because we will need him in the long run (no pun intended).

When Tebow throws the football he looks like a cross

between Tiny Tim and Edward Scissorhands! Every report I read out of TC says the same thing…Tebow is 3rd string at best. Orton is hands down the starting QB..then Brady Quinn by a large margin over Tebow. Coach Fox isn’t going to hand anything to Tebow the way McD did last year. The team will be better for it!

by rocko1 on Aug 2, 2011 5:52 PM MDT reply actions

Ummm

For all of his numerous flaws, one thing McD did not do before he was canned was hand anything to Tebow. Or am I forgetting something?

We see a wonderful sun-soaked city nestled at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. Enos sees nickels and dimes.

by Bob in Boulder on Aug 2, 2011 6:00 PM MDT up reply actions

For starters, how bout drafting him in the 1st round...handed him millions $$$,

when everyone had him rated late 2nd early 3rd round. The, pulling Orton off the field inside the 5 yard line…just where did Tebow earn that? The HC pulls the players, who did all the heavy lifting to drive the ball down the field, and hands the gravy to TT.
Also, don’t recall Tebow ever beating out Brady Quinn and that’s showing up in TC now.
The age old question..who do you want on your team(could apply to anything)..the guy who has worked his rear end off for every inch he has achieved..or the one who has had everything handed to him. I believe Coach Fox is answering that question during TC.

by rocko1 on Aug 2, 2011 6:26 PM MDT up reply actions

Dude, enough with your Ortgasms......

We get it. You have a thing for Orton and can’t let any opportunity slide to bash TT. Everyone is saying he looks like garbage??? I’ve read reports to the contrary, but what do I know.

I rarely post, but read this site religiously. Rocko1 has been having an Ortgasm since day one. Heck, he/she joined this blog within days of the Cutler trade and proceeded to sing the praises of our neckbearded savior. Don’t get me wrong…I like Kyle. Yet, I’m not so blinded by an apparent mancrush as to come off as the most biased anti-TT poster on this fine site. I will probably get flagged for this, but someone has to say it: STFU about your TT hatred and support the team, regardless of who is calling the signals.

I'm so sick of Tebow talk I could puke!

Face it, the guy sucks. I’m not an Orton fan by any means but he’s a hell of a lot better than Tebow. Tebow good at marketing, which the Kool Aid drinker seem to enjoy. He’s not good at being a quarterback.
