Update: Ryan Harris Visits Denver, Signs One-Year Deal With Philadelphia

DENVER - AUGUST 21: Defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh #90 of the Detroit Lions battles the blocking of offensive tackle Ryan Harris #74 of the Denver Broncos during preseason NFL action at INVESCO Field at Mile High on August 21 2010 in Denver Colorado. (Photo by Doug Pensinger/Getty Images)

From Lindsay Jones of the Denver Post. The Denver Broncos met with Offensive Tackle Ryan Harris today in what was an attempt to re-sign the right tackle.

Happening today at 4:15 MT, Josina Anderson announced Harris had taken his talents somewhere else.

Breaking: Sources: OT Ryan Harris to agree to a one-year deal with the #Eaglesless than a minute ago via TweetDeck Favorite Retweet Reply

The status of Ryan Harris with the Broncos this season was in question. Shortly after the season, John Elway had said that he does not expect Ryan Harris to be back with the team in time for the 2011 season. To further cement that, the Broncos drafted Orlando Franklin, a Canadian Tackle, out of Miami, in the second round, 46th overall. This will probably guarantee that that Orlando Franklin will be the the starting right tackle.

The Broncos drafted Harris in 2007 in the third round, 70th overall out of Notre Dame. He is 6'5, 300 pounds.

This would be a great move to add depth to our O line. I don’t think he can stay healthy enough to be counted on as a starter, but he would be about the best backup RT in the league. Get it done EFX.

He’s had one injury that got reaggravated when McD put him back in too soon, and then Buckhalter rolled up on his ankle from behind. I don’t think that’s injury-prone.

by tunesmith on Aug 2, 2011 2:08 PM MDT up reply actions

That was during the last preseason game right? When Harris got hurt.

I put that more on Mcdainels because most coaches don’t let the 1st team guys play in the last preseason game. I wasn’t happy about that one.

I really thought this guy was gonna....

…..get some pretty strong interest in the FA market. I wonder why that hasn’t happened.

I doubt he starts

although they’ll tell him he’ll get a shot. I have a hard time imagining coming back here was his plan A, meaning he probably got no interest outside of Denver. With so many teams lacking 2 quality OT’s (Buffalo, Detroit, KC, Oakland, etc.) I’m shocked no one even gave him a look in camp to have a fair competition. Oh well, their loss, our gain. Best part is he can sub in for both Clady and Franklin, and is not just limited to one side

Seriously, I think the OL plays markedly better when he’s in, and it leads to better W-L performance. Look at 2009 in particular.

by tunesmith on Aug 2, 2011 2:10 PM MDT up reply actions

I'm sorry

it was uncalled for. I think there were a lot more reasons then losing Harris, including the fact that we had no one worthy of being on an NFL roster playing RT when he was out (at least in 09)

Yeah here is a recent quote from him

Rodney A "I did a post on Ryan Harris back in March
Ryan Harris; Worth Fighting For?

In it, I opined that, Harris’ "absence affected our team far greater than the absences of Andre Goodman or Brian Dawkins (combined)", and "certainly more than Kyle Orton".

I didn’t include the win/loss record, but here are a couple things that I did break down that might help..

With Harris starting over the last two years we rushed for 100+ yards per game 72% of the time. When he wasn’t in the game, that number is 29%. Yeah, seriously. The team rushed for 100 yards just four times without him over the last two years. Yet in the 18 games he started, we only not rushed for a hundred yards just five times.

Harris started ten games last year and we averaged 4.3-YPC, for the six games without him we averaged 3.2-YPC. That’s a really, really big difference. But again, before we blame that whole discrepancy on Zane Beadles, look to 2009 when Beadles wasn’t around. That year we averaged 4.45-YPC with Harris starting, and just 3.8-YPC without him. Again, we ranked in the top-10 in each of of those years while he was starting and ranked in the thirties when he wasn’t.

As I said at the time, "Ryan Harris is a loyal Bronco, a wounded man that’s been somewhat left behind and forgotten about. But I assure you, you’ll remember him next year if we’re playing without him". I’m glad it sounds like we won’t have to find out."

I know where you're getting at.

When the broncos started 6-0 the first year with Mcdainels it was due in part because the broncos had the best young combination of offensive tackles in the league. As soon as Harris went down, the season went south along with the running game. Similar situation this year. Once Harris came back middle towards the end of the season, the running game started producing. So yes, when Harris healthy, the broncos are a different team.

When you look at Fox OL's

Harris just doesn’t fit. For RT, he likes behemoths (Otah, Franklin) and Harris is not that, at all. Unless he’s a better run blocker then Franklin, he’ll be an awesome backup, capable of both LT and RT (which is pretty rare)

I know I said it up top, but I just can;t understand why no one else would even give him a shot

He will probably take over the RT spot

Then Fox will move Franklin to LG. Clady and Franklins right next to each other would open some huge running lanes

by gnarlybroncodude on Aug 2, 2011 2:50 PM MDT reply actions

Why Do That?

Zane Beadles did a stellar job—as a rookie mind you once he was moved to guard. No need to move Beadles now.

by RSH089 on Aug 2, 2011 2:50 PM MDT up reply actions

I'd say the argument could be made that:

The front office views Zane Beadles as a utility lineman(this is mostly in theory). In college he started most his career at LT, but had also played some LG. With the Broncos, he’s played LG and RT.

He’s extremely versatile, and if on your bench could potentially buy you an extra roster spot because he can be the primary back up at LT, LG, RG, and RT, all of which he’s played in the last 4 years minus RG. Due to his well roundedness, he could be a our dream bench lineman if it’s clear that the line would be better with Franklin at guard and Harris at tackle.

Note that I want Franklin and Beadles starting this year, however I feel Beadles would be a far greater bench asset then Harris.

Very nice!

Having Clady/Kuper/Walton/Frankln/Harris on the o-line would make for a more physical o-line. Which than equates to more redzone success. Of course you give Beadles a chance, but even if he doesn’t start, the value of Beadles is still pretty high. You could still bring him in on short yardage situation to have another o-linemen in the game. The Steelers/Ravens love doing that.

The reason for the confusion

is the new CBA, we don’t have it written down word for word for our reading, and in it explains the nuances of the cap. The Broncos know how much they have, its up to us and the media to find out. I think its more then BW thinks, but I’d be hella surprised if it was 26 mil

It all comes down to who's good at what position

Is Harris a better right tackle than Franklin? I’d bet that Harris is a MUCH better passblocker at the right tackle position than Franklin. Run blocking is debatable. Franklin is supposed to be a mauler and doens’t quit until about a second or two after the whistle blows. He’s probably our best run blocker at any of the O-line positions, but he’s still a rookie. So, let’s say that due to Harris’ passblocking skills being better than Franklin’s he’s better for the job. Ok, Harris at right tackle good. Kuper at Right gaurd (we just gave him a multi-year deal) Good. Walton at center, in his 2nd year, should be improving. He’s not probowl, but we don’t got anyone else to play that spot, it’s set. Left tackle, we got one of the best in Clady. Good. Left Guard. Well, now that becomes the debate between Franklin and Beadles. I’d have to go with Franklin for his runblocking skills. The video of Franklin I watched out of college showed him getting beat on passpro while at right tackle. At left gaurd where he also played, he actually did a good job. Mostly because he’s not going up against as athletic a player, and he’s got a guy on his left and right to help crowd the gap, meaning he doesn’t have to move fast to block the guy. He can push him until he runs into the next blocker. I think the loser in Harris being signed is Beadles. But like someone above said, he’s a jack of all trades at the O-line so he’ll be a great backup.

I think it comes down to what does Fox want

Fox likes behemoths at RT, ala Jeff Otah. Harris doesn’t fit that, Franklin does. I expect Harris to be a backup for both Clady and Franklin, which is huge since most backup OT’s don’t have such versatility

Don't think Denver whiffed

I don’t think Fox and Elway really wanted him that bad. See posts about how Fox likes really big RTs and how Elway early on didn’t think he would be back. If they brought him in and were honest about him being a back up to the rookie and offering a low price tag, I can see why he went to the Eagles. You gotta give Denver credit for being upfront.

Broncos may be about done signing FAs. Aubrayo Franklin signed with the Saints. Don’t know who else Denver may be looking at. Pretty sure its not Osi. Maybe some trades left to do, like Gronkowski to someone who still needs a TE.

If I can't have high expectations that succeed, I''d rather have high expectations and be disappointed than have low expectations and be resigned to losing.

by ChristianL on Aug 2, 2011 4:47 PM MDT reply actions

that was a valid concern

Apparently, our offer and situation were inferior to Philly’s. This was the problem all along. The slot we wanted him for wasn’t in his best interests. He might have accepted our offer if we were on the verge of a championship but that’s clearly not the case, so why accept a backup role for less money?

On the bright side — a RT shouldn’t be fragile, so we were running a risk if we signed him. Harris can play LT, which is where most of his value resides, but we already have Clady. It’s annoying to be fixing RT so soon after last year’s struggles but we’re just going to have to accept that this is a multi-year project.

We got what we could afford, not due to brilliance... due to a budget. You can still be happy about Brodrick Bunkley without the homerism and excuses.

Kind of makes this a moot point at this point...

The fact that John Elway made a remark (blunder covering his mouth) that Harris would not be retained rings true. Harris is one of the best pass blocking RTs in the league with his original position being LT. It’s pretty plain to see the writing on the wall that John Fox has written and Ryan Harris’ name is nowhere to be found…Case closed on Harris and good luck in Philly young man.

Cap

The Broncos have the cap too. Just heard Schlereth explain it on 104.3. We have 20-25 million in free cap, but teams don’t have to spend it until 2013. This explains why teams like the Bungals are 40 million under the cap. Teams have to be at 90% by 2013

Harris is a great technician. You'll see him get knocked for his lack of durability, but he ended up coming back too soon from a 2009 injury and reinjuring himself.

His play was hampered by injury in 2010 and somehow he ended up being in the McD doghouse. He is actually really durable, having started every game for the Irish while in college at LT.

By NFL standards he is a small OT (6-5 300), but he has very good footwork and uses his hands effectively to gain leverage on bigger DTs. Harris started all 16 games for the 2008 Broncos line that surrendered the fewest sacks in the league and was in the top 3rd of the league in rushing.

As a Broncos fan and Irish fan, I’m sad that we weren’t able to resign him, but the writing has been on the wall for some time on this. I’m curious to see how much his one year deal is worth with Philly.

He didn't spurn the Broncos......

Funny comments so far. As great as it would have been to have him back for a year, I’m sure he was told that he could compete for the RT spot here but that more than likely he would back up a rookie at RT and provide depth along the line.

Would you sign a 1-year deal to play back up to a rookie? No, it wouldn’t make sense. Wait, yes? Well me too but the Broncos wouldn’t likely ask us…….

by OC Bronco Fan on Aug 2, 2011 6:05 PM MDT reply actions

My thoughts exactly

No one listens, but I kept trying to say compare Harris to Fox’s previous RT’s, Franklin fits that, Harris doesn’t. Harris would have been a backup here for sure, barring injury. In Philly, he’ll have a shot to compete for a starting spot

Now the only moves we need to make are....

Le’Ron McClain for FB, Ty Warren for a veteran DT, and a solid zone Corner, perhaps Carlos Rogers (is he known for zone or man?). Any number of free agents for some more O-Line depth would be very welcome as well.

I find this news very distressing. EFX screwed this one up. Harris is better than Franklin and we have NO depth at OT. NONE. Beadles sucks as a OT, but he’ll be our starting RT by week 5. If Clady gets hurt, we are totally F’d

Good news for the Tebow fans is that Franklin will get Orton injured so Timmy will get some PT this year, probably pretty early too.

I am not pleased with this development.

McG

Harris isn’t a fit for Fox. I know you don’t like Franklin, but as a run blocker he should be very effective. As for pass pro, I think we’ll give him some help either with TE’s or RB’s until he develops as a pass protector.

As for Harris, he’s not a very good run blocker and he’s so injury prone the Broncos couldn’t risk starting him again, its cost us dearly so many times before.

Let’s put it this way.. Franklin is 24 years old, so he is old for a rookie. As an LT his Sr year (he was 23), he was getting smoked by younger (18 to 21 year olds) with less experience from teams like NC State, Virginia and Clemson.

Does that make you feel better when he goes against Hali, Jared Allen and Julius Peppers?

Orton won’t be long for the 2011 season if this guy is our RT.

"Well at least we picked a good year to suck" said Pat Bowlen after countersigning Von Miller's rookie contract.

by McGeorge on Aug 2, 2011 9:27 PM MDT up reply actions

Franklin was a pretty good Guard at Miami. When they kicked him out to LT his Sr year, it was depressing. Dude was a turn style and got Jacory killed about 7 times.

He was a pitiful pass blocker as a tackle. Why we drafted him so high is a mystery to me. I know we wanted to run, but are we going to run on 80% of the plays and leave a blocking TE and RB on Franklin’s side the other 20%?

One on one or blitzs and you’ll see Orlando exposed in a horrifying way.

Harris isn’t bad as a run blocker, but I think the drop off from Harris to whatever camp fodder played in his place led to such a disparity.

Just look at Fox’s RT’s. Harris is more a WR compared to the big uglies Fox likes at RT lol. Fox is the HC, if that’s his preference for his RT then let him, clearly it has worked in the past.
