Woody Paige: Tebow will eventually replace Orton again - The Denver Post

Q&A: Broncos' Tebow must learn to be patient in the pocket - The Denver Post
Q: Will Tim Tebow's patience in the pocket increase with a better offensive line protecting him? Or is it just experience he needs in the NFL that will help keep him there longer? Or both? I know this, if I was Tim, I'd be thinking, "I've got two, three seconds to throw the ball before I'm pressured or sacked, so if nothing is open, I'm running to keep our drive alive."

Thanks John

I love me some early tracks. I also want to apologize to all readers, since I have been one of the ones getting into foolish QB arguments with the “Tebow should start now” crowd. I respect their opinions. Of course I want Tebow to lead us to the playoffs, I just want Orton to do it first! Go Broncos!

Irony to me includes being lambasted on a Broncos site for defending our starting quarterback.

(on the Paige Article) What a bunch of crap!

Why does Tebow only get the nod once we’re out of the playoffs?

Nothing would piss me off more then to lose with Orton only to realize at the end we have about the same results with Tebow. The idea of starting Orton is that we think we can get to the playoffs with him. If were only gonna go 6-10 or 7-9, lets use this disappointing season to get some of the rough bumps out of Tebow. I don’t care about winning this year, I want a Super Bowl, and I think Tebow is our best bet. But we need to invest in that best bet a little. I’m sure another year on the bench is nothing but a good thing, but having a year or part of one under his belt will do wonders too. I don’t know about you guys, but the best memories i have of last season were the final 3 games. So don’t hate me for wanting Tebow to get more PT.

Plus Neither Quinn or Orton are under contract next year. Ya think either will re-sign? Tebow is our default QB next year.

I sure hope EFX has thought this through.

Bottom line, as long as were not making the playoffs, which i think we’ll know by week 6-7, lets get Tebow ready for the starting gig next year.

Woody is actually right for once

Orton will be our Week1 starter… and Tebow will start at some point this season.

I will fault him on one thing though. He never mentions injuries as a factor. Orton has NEVER gone through a whole season without getting hurt in his entire career… And with a rookie at RT and 2nd-year guys at LG and C, I"m not sure why that will change this year. Tebow will get his chance either because:

1. Orton gets hurt
2. Broncos are WAY out of contention and Orton struggles
3. Orton gets traded

Look at those 3 scenarios, and I think we all know that one of them is bound to happen… But until then, Orton will be our starter, regardless of who we think should or shouldn’t start.

by scooter17 on Aug 20, 2011 8:45 AM MDT reply actions

Yeah Woody sure is on it. Where DOES he get his ideas from?

We talked about Orton not lasting the whole season weeks ago. I’m still betting he won’t last until the bye week and it will be reason number 1. Orton gets hurt.

As the ancient Tibetan Philosophy states "Don't start none, won't be none!"

What has changed? The appropriate answer, hopefully, is the rest of the team has improved

If we get to the playoffs,.it won’t be because KO suddenly dragged us there. IMPO, it would actually be difficult for KO to get numbers similar to of last year, but a porous defense and stumbling running game meant we picked second in the draft. However, even if he does do that again this year, there is no reason to expect a better win/loss record unless the rest of the team improves.

by idahobronc on Aug 20, 2011 4:17 PM MDT up reply actions

We shall see. I'm on the other side of this coin

Orton is simply not good enough to get the 2011 Broncos into the playoffs. And this year will be his last shot.

That he is in a contract year bodes well for him to thrive, but I still don’t think that makes up for his limited skill set.

Orton is more than likely going to take a few shots tonight (Hello Shawn Merriman)

Orton will likely follow his career normal arc: Injured sometime around week 9, plays for another three with severe drop off in already mediocre play due to injury, replaced by Quinn or Tebow for remainder of season. And that will be the end of the Orton era in Denver.

I’m trying to be optimistic and see a 7-9 season this year, but I’m still going to hold with 6-10.

Mediocrity is like a lollipop: lick it once and you'll suck forever.

merriman is out tonight

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/6875197/buffalo-bills-shawne-merriman-rest-knee-miss-game-vs-denver-broncos

Buffalo Bills linebacker Shawne Merriman will miss the team’s preseason game at Denver on Saturday to rest a sore right knee.

Coach Chan Gailey calls the decision to rest Merriman a precaution. He adds Merriman would have likely played if this were a regular-season game.

Merriman has missed the past two days since hurting his knee during a pass-rushing drill. He had two sacks in Buffalo’s 10-3 preseason-opening loss at Chicago last weekend.

Receiver Roscoe Parrish will also sit out after missing a week of practice due to a leg injury.

The Bills wrapped up three weeks of training camp in suburban Rochester on Thursday and will resume practicing at their headquarters in Orchard Park next week.

Couldn't think of a good screen name...

by Something Clever on Aug 20, 2011 10:34 AM MDT up reply actions

Well, Woody is right on once sense

even though he failed to use this as a rationale (most likely because it would make the column seem like he was wishing injury on someone) Orton has a very spotty record when it comes to staying healthy for a year. Remember he said that he was injured for much of the 2008 season in Chicago (ankles) More than that though, as stated above, when Orton get’s injured his play tends to drop off considerably (as should be expected). If we believe the reports, Orton was injured either during the game at KC last year, or the AZ game. Both were his worst games of the season. I remember that both of those games were rather brutal to watch.

So if/when Orton get’s injured you need to take him out of the game and sit him, and that means inevitably a backup will be used some time this year. Then it will be either Quinn or Tebow.

This quarterback debate gets more laughable by the day and we the fan fall for it every time.

Coach John Fox knows ‘something’ about offenses or he wouldn’t be a head coach, because to be ahead coach you have know ‘something’ about every phase of running an NFL team. Right? Fox may not be an expert with offenses, but that’s where his ass’ts come in, people with a little more knowledge in the areas of offense. Clearly John Fox doesn’t know as much about offenses then say, Mike Shanahan or Bill Belichick, but he knows enough to run the whole team. Just like Shanahan or Belichick might not know as much about defenses than Fox.

With that being said I think John is right in taking to conservative approach with the quarterback situation that he basically inherited from the prior regime. Using the experienced veteran factor makes sense for a new head coach trying to repair a disfunctional defense that was left in shambles. I see that approach as the less risk approach whether it is right or wrong and in the long run will it matter much? Not really, it will only help him build the team he wants to field in two or 3 years. Sure we won’t get to see our former first round pick and watch him develop with his team mates or not, but it relieves the kind of pressure that a new head coach doesn’t need, he has many other concerns to deal with at the moment. The timing isn’t right for Tim Tebow or Brady Quinn, they are just pawns in a media splash of more crap slinging.

Circumstances will fall this season no matter what spin we or the media put on it. That’s the way it is, love it or leave, because our spouting displeasure either way doesn’t matter in the least bit, it will be what it is. I have expressed my views on the Tebow thing and everyone on here knows how I feel, “It’s Tebow Time”! But my fandom for Tim Tebow only goes so far as with Kyle Orton or Brady Quinn. The Broncos as a team come first and only, not one particular player…

by bfree2bronc on Aug 20, 2011 1:51 PM MDT reply actions

The problem is.......

the tebowners keep putting out provavative BS, and it just plays h3ll with facts. They live on three games, one of which was a loss, and three other plays or so. Calling for him to start is nutty and Paige is all of that and more. Saying that Orton is going to be inkjured (yay? How is that any good?) in order to see Tebow "start: is just plain ludicrous. Quinn will start before Tebow.

I wnat to see the Broncos have a shot to win. With a D and a running game, I believe Orton can do a better job than Tebow, and I believe Quinn can do a better job than Tebow this year.

by Gulbrand on Aug 20, 2011 4:17 PM MDT reply actions

I think he lost 2 of 3 starts

And completed less than half his passes. Small sample size or not, he has had a chance to show what he can do in real NFL games, and his best stat was the 200 yards rushing.

Irony to me includes being lambasted on a Broncos site for defending our starting quarterback.

by azdenfan on Aug 20, 2011 4:53 PM MDT up reply actions

Talk about being inaccurate with the facts.

Tebow had a 50% completion percentage – not great – but how is that “less than half of his passes”?

And his best stat was his 200 yards rushing?

That is a nice stat but… I kinda liked his 40-yd TD run on 3rd & 24 against the arch rival Raiders in Oakland in his 1st ever start. Oh, btw, that was the longest TD run for a QB in Broncos history and the longest TD run in NFL history for a QB in his first start. His rushing total for that game (78 yds) was 2nd highest for a QB in team history.

Or, maybe, it was that 33-yd TD pass to Lloyd in the back corner of the endzone – also in the Raiders game. Oh, btw, with that TD, Tebow became only the 3rd QB in NFL history to pass for a TD of 30 or more yds and rush for a TD of 40 or more yds in the same game. He also finished the game with a 100.5 passer rating, the highest ever in team history for a professional debut.

Or, maybe it was his 308 passing yards against the Texans (wasn’t he one of only two rookies in team history to do that in his home opener?). And before you minimize his feat because of who we played, I’ll share this – Sam Bradford had only one 300-yd passing game in 16 starts (308 – against the Broncos).

Or maybe it was the fact that Tebow became the first QB in NFL history to rush for a TD in each of his first three career starts.

There were other nice stat moments but I’ll stop there.

Yeah, I guess you’re right, Tebow has had his chance to show what he can do in real NFL games and it looks like he just can’t play at this level.

Question:

Who freaking cares?

THE BRONCOS ARE PLAYING. Tebow is third string. What’s not to understand?

REally, It doesn’t matter. All three will make the team this year… Believe it. Just stop harping on TT, and start talking about the TEAM…..

by Gulbrand on Aug 20, 2011 10:32 PM MDT up reply actions

If I started posting inaccurate "facts" and stats about Orton you would attempt to clarify, would you not?

I know you would because I’ve read your posts. Besides, your many negative comments about TT render your opinion worthless regarding my comment above.

You are blatantly anti-Tebow so of course you don’t care if anyone misquotes stats or “facts” about his performance but you sure like to jump to Orton’s defense.

On the other hand, you won’t find a single comment I have made that is negative regarding Orton. I would prefer that Tebow start but it’s all about who is playing best right now. If Orton can lead the team to 10 or 12 wins this season that would be fantastic!

I have no problem with tebow not starting but I will defend him, or any Broncos player, when others post inaccurate stats or comments.
