Tebow Under Fire: A Different Kind of Criticism
I learned two important lessons in college.
#1. Never go to Meatloaf Fridays in the cafeteria. They are worse than Gunther Toody's Tuesday Tots special.
#2. Never write when you are either a) Upset or b) Drunk or C) after Meatloaf Fridays. Or any combination thereof.
To this day I still follow rule #1 to the letter.
Rule #2 is a bit more difficult. I have done my damndest to separate myself from the media firestorm that has surrounded Tim Tebow over the past three weeks. My normal morning routine on the way to work is to turn on the radio and listen to Mike and Mike or the local radio guys to get my daily fix of NFL news. Recently that drive has become near unbearable due to the constant sidetracking of perfectly reasonable NFL debate to "How much closer is Tebow to failing out of the NFL today?" I find myself constantly changing the station back and forth until I stumble onto Ke$ha and get sidetracked.
Do you ever go back and look over the old posts that were written right around the time Tebow got drafted? It's fascinating. They were football posts. They talked about Tebow's game and about his ability to succeed or not succeed in the NFL based on his game.
Or how about the old posts right around the time Tebow started for the Broncos those final three games? Tebow had his detractors, but again, they were football posts. We talked about his completion percentage, his total points scored, his comebacks, and his interceptions. Real football conversations. Excitement was palpable. There was forward movement going into the offseason.
Over the course of last year something began to change, almost inexplicably. I know you saw it just like I did. Tebow, our backup and special downs player, became headlines news all over the country. In Denver, any news about the Broncos began with "Tebow" in the headline, even if it was a piece about our defense... and by defense I mean Department of Defense.
I'm pretty sure one headline read, "Tim Tebow complains about size of airline lavatories while the Douglas County school board considers massive budget cuts."
What we missed was that Tebow Mania was changing forms. It had spread from fans into the media and once the media became Tebow Manic.... all bets were off.
So began the MSM journalistic race to the bottom.
As the phenomenon that was Tebow started to build steam sports writers began to realize that a rookie Denver Bronco, from a 4-12 team, with a 1-2 career record, was beginning to put no-name writers on the map. Has this ever happened to our team before?
But what began as mildly annoying plugs to get clicks has changed. Mainstream media has caught on and they've targeted Tebow and they are out for blood. "Reporters" are discovering if they can just say something completely outrageous about Tebow it will end up on the front page of some news site and boom, they have their half hour of power.
Do the facts need to be correct? Absolutely not. In an era of instant news, truth is so relative by the time you've reached your 150 characters the first 130 are out of date. Occupational hazard I guess.
As early as a month ago the reports were still somewhat controlled. They had a healthy respect for the player that is Tim Tebow and they avoided crossing that line into the person that is Tim Tebow. Everyone knew that aspect of Tim was out there, the question became who would be the first person to go after it. Who was going to be that guy?
Like clockwork, that line was crossed. The first reporter to get traction doing it has led to an onslaught of copycat second-rate reporters attempting to get in on the feeding frenzy. Where stories were once just annoying and a little ridiculous, they have now become venemous, hateful, and destructive to a young player in the NFL. We aren't talking football anymore. No we're talking faith, character, personality, intelligence, and everything else a man is made up of.
The things being said about Tebow right now on the radio and in print would be racist if he were black, bigoted if he were Muslim, anti-semitic if he were Jewish, and sexist if he were a woman not named Sarah Palin. In this case, they are acceptable, encouraged and lauded. Write one of these articles and you can bet your fancy new click record you'll be on the phone with some radio station across the nation wanting your new fashionably opportunistic opinion.
I've done my best over the past couple of weeks to avoid reading these stories. They really just bring me down and the conjecture is so obvious I always felt they were worthless. In preparation for this piece I realized that I had to bite the bullet and read. That pushed me over the edge.
I'm pretty pissed. I'm breaking my rule #2. I don't understand how this one person who is trying to incredibly hard to just do what is asked of him, to play the sport that he loves, and live a life that he believes is right, must also be the butt of so many venomous jokes. Well, that's actually not entirely true. I understand it, I just don't know how so many people that claim to be on his side can just sit by and let him take it alone. It's like the kid on the playground who is constantly hounded by bullies but nobody ever decides to step in and help, they just watch from the sidelines. In this case, the kid could beat the living tar out of the bully but chooses instead to keep his head down, smile, and say,
"I'm having fun." B.S. He's getting beat down and watching as his team turns a blind eye.
Reporters flock to him. Denver is a story this offseason for one reason. Tim Tebow. Without him we are an afterthought. We are the Jaguars, or the Bills, or the Seahawks. Every word, every tweet, every shred of talk regarding Tebow from himself or one of his coaches or teammates is broken down into everything except for its Latin roots. Then those words are put back together, re-arranged for effect, edited to include the now necessary Christian jab, throw in a few lines of their own to make fun of the cult fans that "pray at the temple of Tebow", speak to his catastrophic decline in skills, hit publish, crack a beer with their editor, and watch the clicks come in. Nice revenue stream. Thank you Mr. Tebow. By the way we love you and hope you prove us wrong.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I am a Broncos fan that is watching one of my own getting treated by the MSM in a way that no other Broncos player (at least in my lifetime) has ever been treated. How can we not as an entire group of fans feel extremely indignant as to what is happening? How is it our local newspapers and bloggers can't fight back on behalf of their own? Is it down to us?
Sure, we argue about Tebow and Orton amongst ourselves. That's what fans of a common team do. We're like family in that sense. What we say to each other as fans of our own team is one thing. This is something else. People outside of our organization are coming after one of our own and it's not small potshots from their kid's nerf gun. It's a full on blitzkrieg. This has become a battle of words. There are so few facts, so little actual gampley, that rhetoric and hyperbole have become king.
Here at MHR we've been fighting this battle on all fronts. Emotional, logical, statistical, we've got it covered on all sides. But when we are divided like this we are a small voice and we are being drowned out by no-name reporters who have the balls to sit in their dank cubicles at their second-rate news site and bite the hand that feeds by putting their piece of trash reporting on the front page of their parent website between an article about 10 ways your marriage sucks and a celebrity divorce. We've been bickering amongst each other, now we've got an outsider hitting below the belt.
To make matters worse the Denver Broncos, the very organization that is supposed to have this guy's back has fallen silent. Instead of standing up for one of their guys in the face of intense criticism they seem to have embraced the game of subterfuge, using an unnamed source to release some of the most painful criticism of all. He's not even better than an UDFA who's never seen a single snap in real season play. Slowly but surely it seems as if the one young player left over from the McDaniel's regime who was truly excited to be a part of this team is slowly being pushed aside. As fans who want so badly to trust our new FO, how are we supposed to respond? A FO that has promised us transparency gives us...
Silence... and unnamed sources.
Hey Unnamed source... 'ppreciate that.
Are we just so fed up with it we've resigned ourselves to the fact that it's time to just give up on the Tebow experiment altogether? Maybe that Beiber loving-Friday meatloaf eating-frat-boy-juco journalist was right all along. It's too hard. Time to quit. Maybe Tebow will be great someday but let's just get him out of this poisonous environment and on another team that will give him a real shot.
No. No way. This has the makings of a tough year. We just went through one of those... so that kind of sucks. But write my name down as one Bronco fan that won't ever give up on Tebow as a successful Bronco until the Broncos give up on Tim Tebow. This is only the beginning for him. These stories will continue to come out all season. Between us, here, within the scope of this blog, I plan on continuing to debate away. But as long as the national media continues to come after one of our own, attempts to question his character, and continues to write snarky comments about Tebow Manic fans while ramming half-rate Tebow news down our throats daily... I plan on pushing back. And that goes for any Denver Bronco in this situation.
I'm just one fan and I'm tired. But I'm not about to give up yet. Not while Tim's still a Bronco. I can do rhetoric and hyperbole too.
I also have a ridiculously awesome nerf gun.

Seriously, great post, rec’d, and I am right there with you.
I was a bit anti-Tebow initially, (thought the verses painted on cheeks thing was a bit much), but now I am (was?) excited to cheer for someone who could be a role model for my son in terms of determination, respect for others and just being an all-round good guy.
I see more joy and energy from folk – even on these boards – in tearing down Tebow than there is for tearing down other QB’s accused of rape, or guilty of holding dogs underwater until they expire. It’s a complete joke.
I was at the Texans game, and I left thinking that it was not only a great moment for me, but one for the Broncos in general, one we’d all look back on and share and remember.
It’ll be up to us whether it was just a blip during the never-ending Elway hangover….
Just because I speak with authority doesn't mean I actually know what I'm talking about.

Absolutely, you are spot on with your observation. It seems that even some of our own make a concerted effort to degrade Tebow at every opportunity.

Yep. It's sad.
The all american boy that made good is a joke to a lot of people, but we are celebrating Cam Newton like he’s the greatest thing since sliced bread. I’ll never understand it.
Some days, you're the pigeon. Some days, you're the statue.
Don't blame the media
Even if you hold them in the lowest possible esteme, they are still only responding to market forces.
Over the years the NFL has had many starts. Some rose to a level that even not sports fans would recognize them on the street. Nothing like Tebow has ever happened to the NFL before. The closest comparison I can find is when the Fab Four first toured the US. There is a mania that surrounds Tebow: an irrational admiration that becomes so obsessive that admitting (let alone recognizing) any fault in the young quarterback becomes an act of blasphamy or worse. Last year a rookie that had never taken a snap in the NFL was suddenly the largest selling jersey. I’ve seen posters here mention that he does 50M a year in endorsements – that is some serious bank for a guy with only three starts under his belt. Tebow truely does have rock star status.
The media does what the media does – it gives us stories we want to read, hear or see. It has been too long to remember clearly, but Elway went through the same thing, just to a much smaller scale. I lived in Philly during his rookie year and could not tune into a sports program without at least some mention of Elway.
I found the Silver article interesting. More interesting is that some knowlegeable members of this community took it upon themselves and found some justification for the primary complaint mentioned in the article – Tebow was getting caught under center. Silver did what I wanted him to do, he gave relevant information on the development of our former first round draft choice. He helped to explain why a former starter (as of the last regular season game) is now listed third on the depth charts. As a fan of the Denver Broncos, these are things I want to know. I want to know them about every player of significance on the team.
This is not a media thing. This is a fan thing. Some people just “get it”. They understand why Tebow is such an extraordinary athlete. They understand that his combination of charactor, discipline, drive and hard work will lead him to become the greatest QB to ever play the game. These people are legion – they are committed – they are boisterous – they are everywhere! The truth, in their eyes, is so readily apparent that to disagree with their viewpoint is to become part of some vast conspiracy to deprive football, or at least the Denver Broncos, of the greatest player to ever come along.
I am one of those that “does not get it”. For this I am often labeled an Orton Supporter. I support Kyle Orton because he is the best Quarter Back on our roster. Kyle is not the type of QB anyone gets excited about. He is a passing machine, good at all aspects of the game but not the most emotional or creative guy to ever play that position. There are players I am excited about this year – Von, Doom, Moore, KM and a young O Line that has great things written all over them … but not Kyle Orton, he is just simply the best QB we have on the roster.
As one of those that simply “does not get it”, I tend to become protective of my team when I hear other fans accusing the head coach of some conspiracy to hold Tebow down – or when I read that somehow Elway is intentionally derailing Tebow’s career so that he can remain the King of Denver.
Tebow is a second year player that has had a few set backs that were not within his control: his drafting coach was fired mid season and the lock out. He came from a system that did not prepare him for an NFL offense. I really don’t see my comments about the specific areas he needs to work on as being negative – but in this highly charged environment of Tebow Mania my comments are often received as nothing short of treason. So exhasperating is this, that on many occassion I have secretly wished for Tebow to be traded simply to get rid of his fans.
For the Tebow fans offended by the Media coverage of TT, my advice would be to quick clicking those links – you are almost certainly the ones providing the link bonanza you are accusing these guys of seeking.

What don't you get?
How do people keep saying Tebow’s been demoted? Fox has repeatedly said no one’s status has changed and the depth chart on denverbroncos.com still has him listed at #2. People keep saying this based on Quinn playing second in the Bills game, but Fox clearly refuted this. They say he got that shot based on his strong performance against the Cowboys…but Tebow played better during that game and didn’t play for as long. Don’t understand how people keep saying this and titling articles about it when it patently isn’t true. I mean it’s been CLEARLY stated so it’s not like people are just getting confused….. Sheesh.
uhhh ..... no
Not too sure who is responsible for maintaining the depth chart on DB.com but Monday they still hand LenDale White listed as third on the chart. Today they have Nate Jones listed ahead of Squid at RCB. Ty Warren is listed second in the depth chart at NT. While you would expect that list to be the official list – it obviously has flaws.
Quinn’s performance was head and shoulders above Tebow in Dallas. Obviously this is something subject to interpertation. But giving Quinn first string snaps in the 2 minute drill and into the fourth quarter speaks very loudly. Tebow making only two pass attempts speaks to where the coaches think he is developmentally. Taking Tebow out after so few plays to put Weber on the field was a real head scratcher. If Tebow were seen at the second quarterback he would be getting reps in games so that he can work on his timing and other developmental issues.
Guess we will all have a clearer idea of where Tebow is on the depth charts Saturday night. Expect Orton and the 1s to play into the third quarter. If Quinn comes in and takes the second string then you will have a real good idea where Tebow is.
The part of the article that is telling is the complaint that Tebow gets stuck under center. That seems to be confirmed by a couple members of the MHR staff that went back and looked at the film.
Actually
Coach Fox won’t state the pecking order of the other QB’s. He said the 2nd QB won’t be decided until the season begins or after preseason. He would only refute the claim made through Silver by some unnamed source about Tebow being 4th behind Weber.
Coach Fox refutes report that Tebow after Weber or 4th QB
Aug. 24, 2011 2:37 p.m. – by Lee Rasizer – Coach Fox refutes report about Tebow being No. 4
Coach John Fox reacted strongly to a Yahoo! Sports report that quoted “a highly knowledgeable member of the organization” as saying QB Tim Tebow would be No. 4 on the depth chart, if the competition solely was based on performance. “Maybe they heard it from the cook, I’m not sure,” Fox quipped. Coach John Fox has been steadfast in not revealing the pecking order at nearly every position. So, in light of a report that QB Tim Tebow is playing at a level that would place him fourth on the depth chart, Fox still didn’t tip his hand. But based on practice snaps, Tebow continues to share time with Brady Quinn at No. 2. Broncos RapidReports

I have to agree
It does seem like he has been hung out to dry by the Broncos Org. It almost appears that there is a PR strategy designed to slowly introduce doubt so that when they release Tebow we wont care as much. I hope that is not the case but it sure feels like it.
"I get sick when I hear athletes say I’m not a role model" "Yes you are. You’re just not a very good one." -Tim Tebow
I agree too MT
But the hype machine started this in Florida and all it did was snowball until it overcame TT. I don’t think it’s right and no 23 year old should have to deal with the unreal expectations of so many, but it is what it is. Growing up in Los Angeles has made me skeptical of hype since I have been around Hollywood and phony people. Not saying TT is phony at all, just that others are using him and will continue to do that until he is used up. A candle can only burn for so long and the mountain that TT has to overcome now is going to take every inch of that candle to succeed or fail. Either one will make most of this tripe go away. Unfortunately it will have to be at least 2 Super Bowl rings for that to die down. Is that justified or fair? Heck no. But it is what it is.

It is what it is but...
I think he has a great person on the roster to help him with the onslaught that he is going through. That guy, though, happens to be the guy that that he is fighting for the #2 QB spot for. Brady Quinn didn’t have as much Tebowmania but he was the Notre Dame QB that was to shock the world. He finished ‘05 4th to Bush, Young, and Liehnart and then ’06 3rd to T. Smith and Mcfadden in the Heisman Race. He Broke 36 Notre Dame Records while there. He was Tied for most wins at the school. He was the golden boy from the golden Domers, and he didnt even make it off the NFL Draft stage before criticism came. his own alumni Joe Thiesmann called him ’unprofessional’ for his look and chewing gum when he was called at 22 in the first round, even though people had predicted him to be a top 10 pick and some had him #1. Drafted as the ‘Franchise Player’ he was slotted #3 on the Depth Chart. Took Three Years and a Coaching Change for him to get a Shot to start the season…but only having started 3 games they thought he was raw and he only lasted 3 games before being yanked He finished ‘09’ with one good game before they IR’d him. Then "The Franchise QB’ was traded for a 6th round pick.
He has looked good this preseason and people are getting excited to see him play again. I think if their is a person in that locker room that could help Tebow wade through this it would be Brady Quinn.
Thanks PH
By no means could I have put this into words.
These are pro athletes and will be criticized continually. I remember when Elway was front page news not for his play or poor play but because he wasnt giving out the candy he endorsed on Halloween. Then it was to sell papers, today it’s for “clicks”.
Tebw = CLICKS. Michael Silver who has been around along time and could probably write whatever he wants to (we think) said in a radio interview last night that the the bookend passrush or the Brandon Llyod story would be excellent pieces and he considered writing them, however it’s all about the “CLICKS”. So out came the Tebow angle….
Hoge never ever made any first story Sportscenter press until he stuck a knife in Tebow’s back, cutting him to the core. It was disgusting.
It would be refreshing for Elway to stand in front of a mic. and defend his young QB, empathize a bit, and let everyone know that this firestorm he is in will some day settle. Or Fox to speak up and recognize his work ethic and his value to the team.
Would that be so difficult? Or would it be so detrimental to the rest of the team getting no press that word like that wont ever come?

I stopped clicking articles about Tebow a while ago
There are exceptions to the rule, but for the most part, I don’t read or participate in the debate. I can see with my eyes that Tebow isn’t ready to overtake the starting role. And I know with my own common sense that Tebow isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
The problem as I see it is that the media won’t let up. But that, IMO, will change once the Broncos win a few games and once Orton shows he can be effective just like last year. Lots of variables, though, so no guarantees.
I’m really not sure how to go about this if I’m Tebow or Broncos management, but I know there’s an answer there somewhere. And the answer, IMO, largely consists of a complete media blackout. Maybe Tebow stands with Orton, openly accepts that he’s not ready to start and then says he won’t speak another word to the media all season. Maybe John Fox comes out and says, look we’ve got a young guy that’s developing and the media circus is unfair to him – we’ll answer no questions about Tebow or the QB situation for the rest of the season. And then they scare the shit out of all Broncos personnel, promising suspension/termination for any leaked information. And then they take irresponsible reporters to court and sue them to find sources every chance they get. You might not get the source and you might not win the case, but you’ll stop the leaks and you’ll make reporters think twice about exaggerating stories.
You could also trade with local reporters. Go talk to the editor at the DP – promise two sit down interviews with Fox and four inside scoops throughout the season. In return, they have to stop sensationalizing news that isn’t sensational – news about a backup QB.
I agree. It needs to stop. Broncos management needs to fight back. Great post. Rec’d

Do you feel better writing this...?
I appreciate your passion, but this seemed like an emotionally driven rant. Besides your lessons #1 and #2 didn’t you also learn not to react, say, or write anything when emotional?
I completely disagree with your ascertion that the “Broncos don’t have Tebow’s back”. That is 100% wrong! Unlike yourself, they are simply not taking the bait by responding to ridiculous MSM accusations. They keep everything in house; they worry about the things that they can control, within their locker room and on the playing field. Anything that goes on outside of this controlled environment doesn’t matter. Why worry about things you can’t control?
By suggesting that these villainous MSM writers, bloggers, et al need to be held accountable you are simply feeding the machine. By further suggesting that you, me, and other MileHigh’ers should respond with counterpoints is exactly the objective of those making the outlandish claims in the first place.
Nobody here needs to stand up for Tebow. He’s a big boy and the people that really matter – his coaches and teammates – DO have his back. Why do they need to go public to prove it?

To the person that counts
Unlike you and I, Tim’s teammates and coaches are busy working on building a team. The ‘team’ includes mutal support of each other. Tim’s team mates support him on and off the feild in personal ways that we should never get to see. They also understand that the circus that surrounds Tebow is not of Tim’s asking or making. For any member of the Bronco’s organization to stand up publicly and say anything more than they have already said is only going to fuel the controversy and give it a credibility it does not deserve.
Some of what you say is right, but . . .
The Broncos in many ways have set this up. I have pointed out previously it was only a few weeks ago when the Broncos were attempting to trade Orton, who is now their starter. If that trade had gone through there was a lot of speculation about Tebow being the starter. While the Broncos never openly addressed who would start if Orton was gone there was logically a lot of speculation. Other than saying Orton is the starter for the first regular season game there has been comments coming from the Broncos about the progress and performance of Quinn and Weber, yet silence about Tebow. I feel BroncoPH is spot on in writing for this because he has raised legitimate issues the Broncos as an organization should look at. While the Broncos organization laundry for all to see is not the answer neither is total silence. I disagree with your premise.

Broncos did not create the mess, McDaniels did.
If Tebow would have been a 4th instead of 1st then there would be no controversy.
Sorry to disagree with you
but the Bronco Organization is NOT keeping things "in house’,. Somebody is leaking information detrimental to Tebow almost daily. I agree you can’t undo it, but it should stop.
So there's a mole within the Organization?
And on top of this, this unnamed person is leaking information to a Yahoo sports writer? Sorry but that doesn’t seem very plausible to me. If you’re going to leak something, do it to a media member that has at least a sliver of credibility.

Maybe I’m being too logical, but why wouldn’t they try to showcase Quinn during the preseason and let other teams that have horrible QB situations take notice. EFX knows what they have in Tebow, but know one knows about Quinn. But people are talking about him in a positive tone for the first time in a long time.
That could be wishful thinking, but for damn sakes, this is just preseason.

I don’t agree with “there is not such thing as MSM” — this might be just a definition thing. MSM (which I’m reading as mainstream media) is defined as media that is consumed by the masses. In sports, groups like Yahoo sports, ESPN and Fox Sports all qualify. A study of these groups also tends to show they cover the same stories. Why they do that? Lots of theories:
A) There are only so many “news” (information based) stories to tell
B) They’re all terrified of being beat on a story (reporting it second) as he who reports first gets credit (and the eyeballs/respect that come with it
C) It’s easier to recycle than it is to actually report.

Quite A Firestorm
Actually the better word is s—tstorm. The following headline on Yahoo Sports says it all for me – “The surprising fall of Tim Tebow.” Now I tend to find most of the so-called sports writers for Yahoo to be crap-writers, it is rare to find something they write to not have a “piling on” quality to it; but this headline is absolutely crazy. Coming out of college almost every sports writer along with radio and tv media known and unknown were talking about how Tebow did not have a chance and how he would most likely fail. The same things were said when the Broncos drafted him. Even under McDaniels era they were saying the same thing. A few suggested if Tebow was to succeed he would be a long term project, yet now he has become a lightning rod of media negativity. It is clear to me many sports media types these days have joined with other mainstream media and are only interested in bottom-feeding. If fault can be found within the Broncos organization it is with their silence regarding what their plans are for Tebow. I’m not talking about detailed information but at least a hint pointing in some direction. Is he a project in work? Do they feel with more experience and time he can be a starter? Or are they marking time until next year and will attempt to trade him? Remember it was just a few weeks ago they were close (or were they really) to trading the quy they now say is their starter.

I AM REALLY GETTING UPSET
I’m pissed at the media right now. My distain for the MSM and the harshest critics has my blood boiling. This has nothing to do with religion, or being a Gator fan, or even being a Broncos fan!!! I know he’s a grown man and can handle himself but this is getting ridiculous with all the piling on.
To say he is a bust completely boggles my mind…….he’s had 3 starts for crying out loud. Shouldn’t we wait for him to have a couple seasons of poor play before he’s given that label?
If the Broncos don’t give him a chance, I hope he goes on to have a hall of fame career.

How many seasons did JaWalrus Russell get? How many seasons did Leaf get? Joey Harrington? David Carr? Tim Couch? Rex Grossman? All of these QB’s were considered busts…after being a full time starter for at least 2 years. How is Tebow a bust after 3 games and an abbreviated training camp? Drives me mad.

I just had to look it up...
Andre Ware 4 seasons
JaMarcus Russell 3 seasons
David Klingler 6 seasons
David Carr 9 seasons (and counting)
Alex Smith 5 seasons (and counting)
Joey Harrington 6 seasons
Ryan Leaf 3 seasons
Tim Couch 5 seasons
Akili Smith 4 seasons
Heath Shuler 4 seasons
Some of these guys were #1 overall, #2 overall, #3 overall and they got anywhere between 3-9 seasons. Some of these guys were full time starters for several years before they were considered busts. Yet Tebow…after 3 games, 2 Training camps (one severley abbreviated) and 6 preseason games Tebow is already a bust. That is just amazing to me.

Interesting read and your frustration regarding the treatment of Mr. Tebow
is quite understandable.
However, while I too have seen a lot of negative criticism coming from various media outlets, I have only seen it in regards of his Professional Quarterback Football skills….we have all heard them:
Inaccurate…
Doesn’t go through his progressions well…
Locks on to primary receiver…
Inconsistent, etc, etc, etc….
Not one time, however (and admittedly I don’t go searching for anti-Tebow articles), have I seen an article disparaging his character, religious views, and the like.
Do you have any examples to support your assertions of:
The things being said about Tebow right now on the radio and in print would be racist if he were black, bigoted if he were Muslim, anti-semitic if he were Jewish, and sexist if he were a woman not named Sarah Palin. In this case, they are acceptable, encouraged and lauded. Write one of these articles and you can bet your fancy new click record you’ll be on the phone with some radio station across the nation wanting your new fashionably opportunistic opinion.
??
I don't think he needs to go hunt these down for you....
…in today’s internet age, just google it yourself. There are plenty. As a matter of fact, I’m watching 1st and 10 on ESPN as I type this and the segment is whether Tebow’s religion plays a role in his criticism. They even did a similar segment last week based on Doyel’s article on CBS Sports.com. There I gave you a few so you don’t have to use google.

You can’t deny that the media is more than excited to accentuate the negative and with each successive swipe at him, they push the line of what’s acceptable further and further into the arena of nasty. I don’t think he needs to list examples. Just do a twitter search for Tebow or Broncos and take your pick.
I think this was a fantastic article and was well deserving of its front page promotion. Very well reasoned. Rec’d.

Tebow's early association with Focus on the Family church...
(whatever Tebow’s intent in making the commercials for them) made his faith political to many people. Focus on the Family is a quasi-political organization, and those commercials put the target on his back. Anyone who follows politics knows how poisonous the us v. them political environment has been lately. Tebow I think to a large extent is a cause celebre to the political right and a foil to the political left.

Good question. I'm sure there are several..
….however, as far as orthodox jews, probably none. The reason is that if they orthodox, they can’t play on the Sabbath (Friday at sunset to Saturday at sunset). The last I remember was Shawon Green with the Dodgers. That was 7-8 years ago. I believe there was quite a bit of discussion about whether he would play during the Sabbath. Can’t remember how it played out. Here is a pretty extensive list with active players in bold.

Most NFL players are Christian athletes
Many are very vocal about their religion.
Very few of them jump headlong into political commentary. Even a Hall of Fame player like Reggie White got burned trying to do that – because not all of his fans believe what he believes, and many of them found what he espoused about their friends and family to be poisonous and hateful.
Christians who are dead set that Tebow’s religion is the reason he takes slings and arrows should REALLY look at how many members of their team are also members of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and have successful NFL careers because their religion is not the sum total of their ability or preparedness to play top level football.
[...]when Giants coach Steve Owen, a certified defensive genius, was asked how he planned to stop Nagurski, he said: "With a shotgun, as he’s leaving the dressing room."

Tebow's religion is not the sum total of his ability or preparedness to play in the NFL
There is no way Tebow or any other player could win the Heisman if his only ability was religion. Tebow’s performance in the NFL thus far been great. Based on his performance last season he was targeted to be the starter until Orton rejected his trade offer. In the preseason games this year Tebow has played well. So his preparedness for the NFL is not in question. It has been decided that he is not ready to start, but Tebow is a “work in progress” in the NFL not unlike many other quarterbacks before him.
Tebow supporters, Christians included don’t believe that all criticism of Tebow is due to Tebow’s religion. However, supporters do understand that there is a definite backlash for Tebow’s outspokeness of his faith, his clean lifestyle and his popularity.
Popularity breeds contempt: The more influence you have, the more some people start to hate. There are also those who don’t believe who hate someone who uses a platform to share the love of God. Then there are those people who lack moral fiber and have a perception of those who try to live right as “goodie goodies” who are just fakes and can’t wait to see them fall. Their opinion and criticism of Tebow is tainted by their bias and Supporters see the level of criticism and even the amount of criticism pointed at Tebow many times stems from this mixture of bias.
"There's only one person who carries the ball right here..."
I’m waiting until Sept 2nd, the day Tebow is due $6.2MM, to express my feelings. Tim’s cap hit will be small for the remainder of his rookie deal.
If he is a Bronco after that date, he’ll be a Bronco for a good long while and I’ll feel confident that EFX is running a professional team with the backing of a strong owner.
If EFX trades or cuts Tebow before Sept 2, you’ll see the return of hateful and raging McGeorge, the same one that hated so hard on McDaniels.
I’m thinking the former will happen with odds at 97% to 3%.
3% of me thinks EFX might be woefully incompetent (specifically E and X).

IAOFM is saying they have not and it is due on Sept 2nd.
I’ll be on edge until then. Tebow has gone 7-9 in the preseason for 101 yards with no TDs or Ints. He also has about 30 rushing yards. He’s played pretty well vs several other QBs I’ve seen (Locker, Dalton, Fitzpatrick, Henne, T Jackson, Colts QBs, etc).
It makes no sense for Denver’ organization to put him on blast like this. I also think Silver is a hack.
Xanders, call Seattle.. Brady Quinn and our 5th rounder for Seattle's 2012 2nd rounder (moves to a 1st if Quinn gets them to the playoffs). Time for some revenge for the Phonz trade.
I'm with you
I wasn’t a big fan of the Tebow pick to begin with, since I thought Orton would progress to a winner in year 2 under McD (shows how much I know) and that Quinn would be a capable backup, but the three games I watched him play last year set me on fire. He rallied a team that had nothing to play for and made them COMPETE during those contests. Even handcuffed by the playcalling in the Raiders game, which was the very definition of epic fail, he at least made things competitive (40 yard TD run, anyone?).
People keep repeating, “he can’t make NFL throws” like it is somehow a fact if you say it 1,000 times. If I remember correctly, Lloyd led the league in yards last year. that was with Orton out for the last three games and Tebow in. So, somehow, Lloyd managed to keep catching passes from a guy who “can’t make NFL throws.” (That corner of the endzone TD was a thing of beauty!)
Take my advice... I'm not using it!
"If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague."

I agree. This thing is getting ridiculous. I am a bronco fan first and foremost. And i really like what im seeing from kyle right now. But I am also on the tebow bandwagon. I think that the kid has that it factor. But you can see all this crap is bringing him down. Last week he just looked very down not the tim we all have seen on the field before. I think he should take a vow of silence for the rest of the season. Not do any interviews speak to reporters nothing. And the Bronco Brass should make it abundently known that tim will Not be doing interviews and they will not be addressing anything about tim period except for his play on the field (if he gets on it). They should use this year to completely develop him and in their own way sheild him from this crap. Then next year unleash him on the league and start laughing at the critics. Okay the last part was my optimistic view that tim’s the future but anyway sorry for the rant.
Courage is not the absence of fear. It is acting in spite of it.
Nationally, Tebow is a bigger story
Tim Tebow IS bigger than the Broncos…in terms of clicks and jersey sales. That was true the day he was drafted, and it’s true now. So, there will be more stories about TT in the national media.
It looked like Tebow was going to be the starter, now it looks like he might not play at all this year. That big of a swing in status is fascinating human drama. What does it mean? All the speculation is in the meaning. Is it a test from God? A test of faith? Will never make it in the NFL? Are College and the NFL really that different? Is leadership less important than skill? Are NFL coaches stuck and narrow minded? Is the competition fair? Is life unfair? Does hard work always pay off or are there limits? Can athletes relearn their throwing motion or not? Is TT not smart enough to read the defenses? On and on it goes…
On the football side, clearly, once the Orton trade was dead, the Broncos decided to focus on building a to-be-feared running game. Therefore, the QB’s skill set must complement and support this focus. The QB must quickly and consistently move well from under center. Every play starts out looking like a run. The passing game depends on the QB selling play action. The third QB skill is quickly dropping back; the forth is fast reads of progressions while reading the defense, and last is placing the ball accurately to the spot the receiver is moving toward. The QB role is defined robotically. No Improvisation.
If it was a fear-the-pass system, then QBs need to be great in the shotgun, rolling out, moving pockets, creating confusion in the defense and taking advantage of it. Improvisation, creativity and athleticism are essential. If that were the system of choice, TT would be number one on the depth chart, not Orton. But that isn’t the system, this year.
For TT to move up the depth chart in a Fox world, he has to at least master the first to skills, pulling out from center quickly and consistently, and developing a great fake handoff. Otherwise, the run game won’t work as well or as consistently, and that’s not acceptable.
How will TT respond? He has a whole year to focus on learning to be better at supporting and selling a power running game. If he improves that, then the Bronco’s leadership will trust him enough to give him a shot. They can easily add rollouts, moving screens, and option-like plays to take advantage of Tim’s other abilities.
We will know if the Broncos don’t think he can do it, if they sign either KO of BQ to a long-term contract.
Back to the non-football side, the national media will run with human drama, chasing the clicks, speculating and meaning making. That’s wired into us humans, and it’s not going to go away.
The question for us Bronco fans is, can we find a radio station that won’t drive us nuts?

Thanks for the excellent write up BroncosPH!
ALL the Tebow discussion has become tiring. The MSM will milk the most mundane cow to death as long as the ratings support the effort. But if you use the media to support your book or underwear endorsements, do you open a door that leads to attention that may be less supportive?
Tim Tebow gave hope to Broncos fans stuck in the quagmire of the 2010 season. Rough around the edges, but more than game, and what fox hole would he not be welcome in? However, it would appear that the lockout and non-football activity flattened his improvement curve. I believe he will improve to the point that he will be starting in 2012.
Orton was not traded because of contract and money issues, plain and simple.
So what do the Broncos do? The 2011 season will see Orton starting, because he’s ready. Tebow will have the time needed to refine his game, without the pressure of results heaped upon him. Tim Tebow will be the Broncos quarterback when he’s ready to perform in a consistent manner. The job of management is to prepare him, and support him, which they have done.
I don’t believe lashing out at the media will reduce the media attention given to Tebow. Response only feeds the vicious circle.
And what of Brady Quinn? All he does is work his a$$ off during the off-season so that he is improved, and better prepared than ever for the pro game. How is this a bad thing for the Broncos?
Flunkie is eloquent in response. What sells? Who’s buying? As soon as the text goes to conspiracy, front office bias, alien abduction, etc. it’s a fan thing, not football.
Patience is the word for the day.
I agree that msm bottom-feeders have found a somewhat-easy target. I haven’t read much for similar reasons and appreciate your wanting someone to publicly stand up for Tebow but the best thing above can do during a sh*t-storm is wait for it to pass. If the Broncos organization brings attention to Tim, it will just lure the bottom-feeders into a feeding-frenzy; effectively hitting the reset button on the already-closing Tebow-bashing window of opportunity.

Love what Tebow brings to the game!
Fire, energy, enthusiasm, improvisation, and genuine Leadership we have not had since Elway. Maybe Elway sees a guy that could finally set his Legend to rest! I’m a Boulder Liberal who is way left, I mean out there floating in cosmic consciousness, and I love the character and enthusiasm and excitement Tim Tebow brings to the game. Tebow can keep his underwear ads and fake coddled together religion of the Byzantine Empire under Constantine, but I would love to see him under center. IN fact my first decision as GM of my Madden 12 franchise will be to trade Orton and make Tebow the starter, Quinn the backup! I think he will do fine, slow from under center or not.
Fox said that Tebow didn’t play last week because of the rotation. Well this week we better see him in the majority of the game or Fox just became a liar. I hope they give him a chance to shine with the ones, cause he deserves it. We have someone special here in Denver and we are going to shoot ourselves in the foot.
Tebow makes everyone around him play better. Orton falls down on third down. All I can hope for is that Orlando Franklin takes his time mastering the fine art of pass blocking, so Orton can be carried off the field. They should have traded him for whatever. He’s leaving anyway, so why carry on with the pain of a relationship that has the writing on the wall. If Tebow starts and we win 5 games out of 16, then he will have all the experience he needs and another draft next year for DEFENSE and maybe a few good O-line backups and we’ll be good to go. They are taking the safe smart road not expecting the trap ahead…IN three days the whole story is going to change when Saturday comes and Tebow plays great! Rock on Broncos…
This is not the attitude of a Bronco fan.
All I can hope for is that Orlando Franklin takes his time mastering the fine art of pass blocking, so Orton can be carried off the field.
I don’t care if you prefer Tebow, Quinn or Orton, hoping another player gets hurt is disgusting.

Okay..sorry
So wishing injury on any player is disgusting. I agree. Take me out and flail me. Let’s just say I hope he gets sacked so much that they just have to sit him on the bench. IN my view, Orton and our atrocious defense were the problems the last few years, along with the ailing offensive line… Orton lost us game in the clutch, Tebow brought us back from a 17-point deficit against the Texans and it was exciting again. I watch football because I love the excitement of the game..and I live din Carolina for the last ten years and watched Fox’s offenses enough to know that I’m glad McCoy is still the coordinator. Hopefully we’ll keep some Mile High excitement in the playcalling, not just run, run, pass, run run pass, repeat. Although it would be nice to see Moreno break 1500 yards and have a break out season…
Lol
Orton lost us game in the clutch
Of course, it must be all Orton’s fault. Not dropped balls by receivers, points given up by the defense, missed blocks by the offensive line, or botched kicks earlier in the game. It was all Orton’s fault because in the end of the fourth quarter we didn’t feel like he played his absolute best.
You might as well have rattled a garbage can than just blame it all on Orton. I thought that EVERYONE knew the QB gets more credit than he should, and takes more blame than he deserves, but I guess not. Do you honestly think those games we lost were all Orton’s fault???
Sure he couldn’t win them for us, but he sure as hell didn’t lose them for us by himself. That was a combination of the coaching staff and the rest of the team. A team can still win even if their QB is playing atrociously – as long as they all do their own jobs extremely well. Orton was NOT atrocious last year. He had a few horrible games, but for the most part played average, well, and extremely well in some outings. I’d say overall his play was 50/50. If last season’s winning reflected Orton’s play we would have been 8-8 not 4-12.
To say Orton lost us game in the clutch is twisting the truth. Orton didn’t win us “every” game in the clutch but he did win us some of them (the Titans), would have won the jets game too in the clutch if not for a dumb Renaldo Hill flag and our defense giving up that last redzone score.
So next time you complain about Orton and clutch, at least tell the truth. “Orton didn’t win us EVERY game in the clutch.” that’s your real beef with him, and there are others that see it that way too, but I think its a pretty silly argument. Who were you honestly expecting him to be? Tom Brady or Petyon Manning?? There is a reason those guys make 15+ Million Dollars a year, and even THEY have a team around them giving them a chance to win it in the fourth quarter.

Nice example you gave
orton won us one game in the clutch. do you still feel the need to write a novel now?
Some days, you're the pigeon. Some days, you're the statue.
It was just the only one I could think of off the top of my head.
I’m sure with more time to think and check back on games there are at least a couple more. And that’s not even counting games like the Jets game, which Orton did pick up points in the end of the fourth quarter, only for the defense to let him down.
Which is why I thought two examples were enough. Proof that Orton CAN be clutch at times, and proof that the defense was just as responsible for 4th quarter fallouts as Orton was suspect for not netting 4th quarter points.

I’d love to see DJ Williams light him up then Mile High Salute. Or lights out dance. Don’t care, just as long as Rivers is down for the count.
Xanders, call Seattle.. Brady Quinn and our 5th rounder for Seattle's 2012 2nd rounder (moves to a 1st if Quinn gets them to the playoffs). Time for some revenge for the Phonz trade.
I don't know...
I’d rather us completely dominate them multiple seasons in a row and sack him 10+ times in a game and make him be conscious through the whole thing. That sounds even better than knocking him out to me. :D

He's such a competitor he'd absolutely flip his top if that happened.

For those that keep asking where the Tebow hate comes from,
part of it’s the constant stream of nonsense like this from some fans. I’m a Tebow fan and I hope he grows into the best QB in the league, but I’m a Broncos fan above all and comments like this elevating him above the team are incredibly grating.
The kid’s started three games, hasn’t proved anything at the NFL level yet, and you’re claiming he makes everyone around him play better? Tebow can’t out-practice QB’s cast-off from two teams that haven’t seen quality QB play for 25 years and you think one of the greatest QB’s of all time is undermining him for fear he’ll overshadow his legacy? Please.
I guess you didn't watch the end of last season.
There was a clear difference in the way the team was responding to Tebow. Oh but wait, what’s that? He only went 1-2! Well, I guess I’ll pull out the “it’s the rest of the team that sucks ass and not him” card that is oh so popular with the Orton crowd. And it’s not totally unthinkable that Elway could in fact be worried about his own legacy. I recommend the book “the 48 laws of power.” The number one law? Never outshine your master.
Some days, you're the pigeon. Some days, you're the statue.
Believe what you want,
but if you don’t think it’s in the back of his mind somewhere you are probably mistaken. He knows how big Tebow is now, and if he plays and plays well, he’s only going to get bigger.
Some days, you're the pigeon. Some days, you're the statue.
Was it really necessary???
fake coddled together religion of the Byzantine Empire under Constantine
And regardless of your personal beliefs, even non-mesianic Jews recognize that Jesus was a real person that lived and died at the beginning of the first century (thought they believe he was more closer to 4 AD than 0 AD.
So Christianity is not at fake coddled up product of the Byzantine Empire under Constantine who wasn’t even around until about 300 AD. Did you read that from some world history textbook and then just slop it into your post to take a jab at Christianity? That was as tasteless as your comment about wanting Orton to get injured.
There are fans I disagree with and tolerate because this a free and open place of varying opinions… however, there is NO place for your kind of attitude here. I think the majority of MHR would agree that we don’t hope ANY of our players get injured, and we don’t think religious opinions and debates should be popping out everywhere in the middle of what is supposed to be football-oriented discussion. Even if I wasn’t a Christian i’d have been irritated by what you said if only for the improper representation of the historical facts, just to get your jab in.
Believe it or not religion irritates me even worse than your comments in this last post. Because its all a bunch of rules that people created to try and feel “holy” or “righteous”. If you even studied Christ’s work and life for 10 minutes you would see that he wasn’t about rules (he was always breaking/ignoring them) or about people feeling like they were in the right. He came to love people and show them that everyone falls short of his ability to purely love each and every other human being. Even Judas who turned Jesus in to be crucified, Jesus wished well of and loved (and there are external first-century sources outside of the Bible that claim this: http://www.earlychristianwritings.com/).
So leave your personal dogma elsewhere, and lets keep it about football. There are PLENTY of other websites and forums you can voice your religious opinions on, but the only religion on this site is Broncos Football.

Whatever dude.
Every other post is about Tebow and his religion. Get used to it or get over it.
Some days, you're the pigeon. Some days, you're the statue.
It doesn't get to me when people take their pop shots at a player or a particular worldview.
But it does bother me when its done with lies (incorrect data/statements that even SECULAR history would refute), or when its just plain class-less hatred such as wishing a player on our team gets injured so that the player HE wants gets to start.
It would be exactly the same if I wished that Brazenwood’s signficant other got hit by a bus because a smart, fun, supermodel was waiting in the wings to date him.

I give you credit for having the balls to say
what many people are probably thinking. It doesn’t make you a bad person for saying you’d like to see Orton carried off the field, just an honest one.
Some days, you're the pigeon. Some days, you're the statue.
As a fan though, something just doestn't fit....
To make a comparison, what if Troy Tulowitski really had it in his heart to be a Pitcher. It’s a position where if you don’t have the accuracy and feel for what’s needed, you won’t come close. When I look at TT in practice and in games, he just doesn’t fit as a premier passing quarterback. The Broncos need his work ethic, enthusiasm, leadership, and the long list of such positive qualities. I have to believe that the FO is losing sleep over what to do to get him on the field. He may never fit the mold of a specific position player, but I truly believe that he can win us games. Maybe they’re trying to get him to consider a role other than quarterback and can’t move him from it when talking to him. If the FO didn’t have his back they would have traded him by now. I think they want to get the most from him they can in the near future. He has Fullback or TE written all over him – at least for this season.
The MSM needs viewers, and who really takes them seriously. Look at the bashing that Elway took in his first year. Remember how hated he was because he refused to go to the Colts. Didn’t have any impact on his career. I’m not worried about TT’s psyche concerning the MSM. I am concerned about how best to use his talents.
People
People nowadays love to kick a person when he’s down. Just because you are a good person doesn’t mean you get a pass. Don’t care who the quarterback is but I do feel sorry for Tebow
I think if your a good person they tend to kick harder when the feeding frenzy gets started.

I love this post
I think you are soo right! I am so mad at our administration right now. Why would they let one young player that has done everything ever asked of him basically take one for the team? I don’t understand either but I am with you on this one.

There’s a thread up on this article on Broncos Country, some interesting
comments. In case you want to check it out here’s the link
Honestly speaking...
this is one of the best written and most entertaining articles i’ve ever read—football related or not.
