Ryan Harris Out For Year
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/08/26/report-ryan-harris-has-herniated-disc/#comments
It sounds like we can cross off Ryan Harris as an option for Philadelphia’s shaky right tackle position.
Howard Eskin of 610 WIP and NBC-10 reports Harris has a herniated disc in his back. The free agent pickup will have back surgery next week, according to CSNPhilly.com.
Once a fast-rising player on the Broncos, Harris has struggled to stay healthy the last few years. Early this month, he was viewed as the heavy favorite to start in Week One. Winston Justice isn’t healthy either, leaving King Dunlap at right tackle in the preseason.

EFX made the right call on this one....
…..signing injury prone players is a big risk. Good call. Too bad they didn’t make the same call on Warren and put their energy towards other DTs. But kudos on this call. I hope he gets healthy and makes money in his profession soon.

but who was out there?
There’s nothing wrong your logic as long as we can control the situation. Unfortunately, we can’t (entirely). We can make a reasonable offer and hope they take it, but not much more than that. The FA bidding process is like an auction rather than selecting an item off a grocery store shelf. There aren’t many fans here who would have complained if we signed Mebane but Mebane himself might have had different ideas.
It becomes tedious to hear the “we should have .. blah, blah..” frame concerning FAs. It’s not as if the FO is choosing not to sign players. Moreover, we’re not hearing about the various considerations that enter into the bargaining process. It’s best to view much of the talk as smokescreens that obscure what’s happening. No FO person/or agent is going to let us in to the bargaining process unless it’s in their interest. Accounts by sports writers should be read with extreme skepticism.

Remember how we were clamoring for Jenkins as well?
Well now it seems he’s out for the year as well. There really wasn’t anyone else out there and we got Warren for the right price

Not sure what you mean by "right price"....
…it seemed that during the FA process everybody we didn’t get, the reason on MHR is that we didn’t want to overpay for that player. That makes the assumption that the Broncos know the true worth of the player, not the team he signed for overpayed. Who knows. But yes I wanted Jenkins and would have ended just like Warren. So clearly there are no sure things, but I think it is pretty well excepted in the NFL that players with injury histories are more likely to get hurt again then other players. Warren missed last season, flunked the Pats conditioning test, and even missed a good chunk of the year before with injury. We took a shot, it just didn’t work out. Oh well, we move on.

Yes but
with Jenkins we would have almost certainly paid more but he would have been out anyways. We paid 2.5 mil? for Warren and it fit our situation at the time. Also, his arm was hurt so there was no way anyone saw that coming, since it was his hip that was hurt last year

But this is 3 years in a row Warren is not hurt...
…for 3 different reasons. If he were a FA after this (which he isn’t) would you advocate going after him? I don’t know why some players are injury prone, I’m guessing D Thomas and Harris, would also like to know since there injuries are unrelated as well. But that’s just the way it is. I’m just not a fan of going after older players coming off of injury. The Broncos have historically (at least recently) went after these players to fill the DT position and I think the results speak for themselves. It’s true Jenkins would have been a more expensive mistake, but there are no guarantees. But there are percentages/odds, and I generally believe older guys that have been injured for the last 2 years are a higher risk (especially those guys who failed the Pats physical) than guys that were healthy the year before.

Crap. I mean 3 years in a row Warren is hurt.

But Jenkins was also hurt last year, so wouldnt this say he’s just as injury prone as Warren? I still believe they made the right choice, take the injury prone guy who will cost less

Ah, Jenkins was hurt last year....
….then he wouldn’t have been the best target either in my philosophy.

kind of beside the point, but...
could it be that a herniated disc is related to some larger “injury prone” condition that led to dislocated toes and his rolled ankle?
If not, then it’s not so much that he was injury prone, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Broncos knew that he had a problematic back and structured their offer to him accordingly.
He had back problems his rookie year ..
If I remember right… wasnt he out for some time early in his rookie season with back problems?

yes, I just checked on what kind of back problems
It wasn’t the pinched nerve problem which put him out in 2007 but and earlier disk problem that required surgery at Notre Dame. SEE POST LATER IN THREAD

when i read the title.. i guess due to the obvious connection, i read: Ryan Clady..
so i almost burst into tears, thinking it was Ryan Clady Out For Year….. thank god its not
They say the cool is all over me..
jesus christ man
can you not ever say that sentence again lol
Rahim Moore once climbed Mount Everest, Mount Kilamanjaro, and K-2 using only one bottle of oxygen and a sack of trail mix.
that sucks for Harris. He is a good tackle. I never like to see a player miss games due to injury.

Sucks for Harris.
I also wanted Denver to draft Marvin Austin (out for year) and J Jenkins (ACL – out for year).
Lady luck is shining on us a little lately.
Xanders, call Seattle.. Brady Quinn and our 5th rounder for Seattle's 2012 2nd rounder (moves to a 1st if Quinn gets them to the playoffs). Time for some revenge for the Phonz trade.
I didn't see Jenkins out for year too. Yikes.

Luck is what it is.
Yes, Warren has lost at least a significant portion of the season, but I would rather have him trying to come back from an upper body injury than, for example, a serious knee or back injury.
Maybe he should of signed with the Broncos?

Even with the injury he couldn’t be much worst than what we have as backups.

disc problems are not a chance outcome
His disc problem — which may have been what knocked him out in 2007 — would have materialized at some point. I don’t want to exceed my understanding of the relevant medical issues but it looks like he had a problem that worsened. It’s not as if it’s a back problem that suddenly appears. They probably gambled on the condition and lost.
Here’s what I can find on his past medical problems:

Report: Broncos’ Harris Out Up To 6 Weeks
AP) DENVER Broncos offensive tackle Ryan Harris will be out four to six weeks after undergoing back surgery.
The Denver Post in its online edition Thursday said Harris underwent a laminectomy procedure to alleviate pinched nerves from the spinal cord.
Harris, a rookie out of Notre Dame, had been projected to be a first-round draft pick until he underwent back surgery in July 2006 to repair a herniated disc. The Broncos drafted Harris this year in the third-round.
During minicamp, Harris began suffering back pain in an area unrelated to his previous surgery, the paper reported.
I don’t recall reading about why he fell from the 1st round because disc surgery. Looks like Shanahan gambled on an injury problem and lost, too.

I figures as such. He can't keep on the field and that won't change.
Sad too. He was a great player.

"EFX made the right call on this one"..."signing injury prone free agents is a huge risk"....
uhhhh….Like Ty Warren?
Harris was a good Bronco. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Back injuries are really a bummer.
I agree, Larsen shouldn’t get any bigger. I am getting tired of his bone crushing hits knocking the pixels off my TV, once they fall to the floor they are very hard to find.
