Have the Broncos Announced a Starting Quarterback?

Have the Broncos announced their starting quarterback? Taking a quick gander down at the fanshot section, I notice a lot of links for "Orton is the starter" and "Orton isn't the starter". Let's just lay some rumors to bed, here. The truth of the matter is, neither of those statements is entirely true. The Broncos haven't announced a week 1 starting quarterback.

Despite what you hear or what's been reported, Kyle Orton hasn't been told anything about his status. Nada.less than a minute ago via Twitter for Android Favorite Retweet Reply

The Broncos organization has stated from the very beginning that there will be an open competition at the quarterback position. That competition will not end after 5 days of training camp practices. When John Fox makes a press conference statement tomorrow saying that Kyle Orton is the starter, then sure... we'll go ahead and crown Orton the starter. However, that hasn't happened.

So, let's put the torches and pitchforks away for a little while. Adam Weber, Brady Quinn, Kyle Orton and Tim Tebow (sorted in alphabetical order by first name, so as to be objective) will compete for the starting job until a clear favorite has emerged and John Fox deems it necessary to press the emergency stop button on the rumor mill. Preseason games and practices will be taken into account and the best quarterback will get the job. The other quarterbacks won't. It's that simple.

Internally, the Broncos organization may have already decided who their quarterback is. There's no way we would know that, however, because nothing has been announced. We'll just have to wait and see.

This

Is all bad. EFX really needs to make it clear what is going on. It’s not an open compitetion at this time.

Why do you say that?

It is sooo early yet.

Is it?

Tebow is getting no reps at all with first team and is splitting second team with Quinn.

And

people are talking about how impressive Quinn is looking getting those same reps Tebow is.

Yes, it is. WAAY TOO EARLY. 5 days of training camp done, and 4 preseason games to go.

The coaches must be laughing out loud about the press coverage.

Then why

Is Tebow getting ZERO reps with the first team?

by Brian Conrad on Aug 3, 2011 3:52 PM MDT up reply actions

Maybe because he needs to earn his way up. But not in 5 practices. All the players will be evaluated over a 6 week period, not 5 days.

Tebow got no reps for 1 day!!!!! Why is everybody acting like its been that way since camp started? Im really tired of this argument. I dont care who starts anymore as long as we win. After 5 days of camp nothings going to change everybody needs to hold judgement till after at least 2 preseason games.

Wake up call. And I wrote this earlier

Let’s face it. Mr. Tebow has an exceptionally high opinion of himself, most elite athletes do. Has anyone heard him be self critical? Or just how hard he’s going to work. Is his head getting too big for his britches? Has he not figured out that most NFLers bust their asses too?

We all have heard how Brady Quinn came to all of the Dawkins OTA"s and busted his ass, so far after day 5 it looks like that work paid off.

Fox and co. maybe giving Tebow a wake up call, “Like time to step it up man! Show us you want to be the man and quit telling us. Go play with the scout team and see how that works for you.”

I’m still of the opinion that if he does these things, he’s the man for the job. At least his FRS commercials are telling us this lol……Didn’t Quinn use to sell for Muscle Milk back when he sucked it up on the field?

Book Deal for one but mainly,

it’s a conclusion I’ve drawn due to the fact he hasn’t been self critical. Pay attention to his quotes. I for one would like to hear some self criticism.

I’m not saying it’s a bad trait, pro athletes are mostly like this. It’s Manning-like to a degree. I’m more concerned that he may be following the whirlwind Quinn went through his rookie season.

Us Tebow lovers are all guilty of telling him how great we think he is, and after all he is human it could be affecting him to a degree. I actually think Fox is calling him out by placing him with the scouts. All Fox wants to see is if he can be the man, he didn’t draft him so not on his record.

by Clompy on Aug 3, 2011 5:07 PM MDT up reply actions

Ok...

So in your opinion he has an exceptionally high opinion of himself because he doesn’t criticize himself ? Hmmm, ok, I guess you can connect those dots if you try hard enough. I do agree that he may have been better off waiting to publish his book but remember most of that book was written before he became a Bronco by another writer. Anyway i’m not a Tebow apologist so you can believe whatever you choose, was just curious if you’d actually heard something specific to support your statement.

Really? After what Hoge said and frankly what the experts said about him before the draft … I surprised Tebow hasn’t locked himself into a dark room and refused to come out. I think the haters/lovers pretty much cancel each other out in the ego department.

And there are plenty of articles written about how hard he was working since January. I think there is only so far you can go outside a team/coach setting.

by SubwayAlumni on Aug 3, 2011 7:45 PM MDT up reply actions

I don't ever recall John Elway being self-critical of himself in public,

I think we can tell if a guy is able to be critical of himself within himself you see it come out in their work habits. After all, if you believe you have areas to improve on you will drive yourself in your training efforts. Tebow does this. He does not have to be publicly self-critical, there are enough of us out there, media included, that are doing that for him already! The last thing he needs to do is open up about his flaws to the media, just watch them pounce on that info! What’s wrong with confidence? This is different from arrogance. I want a confident QB, not someone who’s full of self-doubt. I want a QB who comes to the sideline with the game on the line and tells the coach, “I want the ball here!” oh wait, we do already have someone who’s confident enough to say something like that….

not too worried about self criticism

I think he knows what he needs to work on. I want you to show any accounts of Tebow not busting his butt.

I’ve never read any news or reports that has said anything other than he has an exceptional work ethic. In fact that’s the one thing most people don’t criticize him for.

by trumanj on Aug 4, 2011 8:38 AM MDT up reply actions

Agreed.

however, I would like to hear how much QB training he did in the off season as he did preparing for the draft. I have now doubt he is in extraordinary physical condition, but I would like to know how much work he did on his mechanics and so forth.

by Clompy on Aug 4, 2011 9:15 AM MDT up reply actions

I agree the book probably had him busy but I doubt he neglected his training.

Doing a quick search i found a few articles stating he has been busy during the offseason and has found time to practice everywhere he’s been

SportsGulp

and

DenverPost

All in all I can’t really blame him for the book. I mean nobody can spend 24 hours practicing. So using his time to do something productive was smart. I mean look how many other players got arrested or had some bad PR news about them this off season.

Despite the breathless speculation and endless rumination, this is like any other training camp where guys battle it out for spots and whoever plays best gets the spot.

Wow. Fascinating. Hey, I don’t give a crap who the QB is as long as it’s the best guy we’ve got. And right now, that looks like Orton. Maybe Tebow will never get it. But would it be the worst thing in the world if he has to ride the pine for a while and…oh…I don’t know…EARN the starting job?

Big deal. Next story. Cash money says the press is making more of a story here than there really is.

I don’t want to be wrong on Tebow and regret it after he ends up with another team.

And I don’t want to miss out on Luck if he’s terrible and we hate him.

good post

I for one want to see all three of the quarterbacks in a few preseason games before even considering the starter.

Our offense appears to be much more versatile with two rookie TEs and a multiple options at RB. Since most of the offense is healthy, there appears to be plenty of pieces in place for any quarterback to succeed.

If Tebow or Quinn only perform well in games, then the preseason will give them 4 opportunities to show what they can do. Likewise, if Orton lights it up, even if its preseason, then the staff knows he is the best option.

Everyone needs to just calm down about a subject that has a month to play out.

At this point....

….I may be surprised. Although I believe regular season games are the real tell of Orton vs. Tebow. Orton will easily beat out Tebow in the preseason against vanilla defenses. It will be hard to trade Orton during that stretch. It will be a hard sale to the other players.

idk if the defenses will be as vanilla

with the lockout, teams didnt get to practice schemes as much. so i expect a more intense preseason with starters getting more action

….I can’t justify starting a post with it. But PFT lists these teams as over the cap. Anybody have any idea who may be cut and be of interest?

Raiders ($17.3 million), Steelers ($11.5 million), Texans ($8.5 million), Vikings ($5.6 million), Lions ($5 million), Cowboys ($3.7 million), and Panthers ($939,000).

Everybody saying it doesn't matter who starts....

…and we all need to just deal with it are living in utopia. Sadly this is a controversy that will not go away until, as Lloyd put it, the “Tebow Thing” plays out. Here are some reasons:

1. Tebow has a huge fanatic following earned or not.
2. Tebow moves merchandise. That has to appeal to a cash strapped owner.
3. EFX tried to trade Orton essentially saying it is Tebow’s job.
4. Orton will be attacked mercilessly by the Tebow follows and MSM and half of MHR when he struggles.

To sum up, this will be a controversy unless Orton takes us to the promised land. Is it fair? No. But this isn’t going away until the “Tebow Thing” plays out.

With Kyle – Brandon , Eddie and Eric Denver should have a very potent passing attack. I wish they would have picked up 1 more good RB but Denver should have a top 15 offense.

People forget that Orton lead the NFL in passing for over half 2010.

It's true

I continue to be of the opinion that Orton starting is the best thing for the Broncos, both for success this year and for Tebow to truly get the shot he deserves at the best possible time.
Orton can move the ball – red zone and 3rd downs notwithstanding (and those are obviously going to be issues when you can’t run the ball and have no TE-type targets). He is an effective QB who actually had a pretty good win/loss record prior to last season. He did win games in Chicago, even if the credit should mainly go to their defense.
Tebow is in a tough spot this year – young QBs do a lot of development in the offseason, as they truly prepare in an NFL context. He couldn’t do that this year, because of the lockout. He has a lot of development work to do – and we can see from Rivers and Rodgers that much of the work can happen as a backup. Rivers particularly, as much as I hate the guy, improved while backing up Drew Brees, who was essentially an Orton at the time.
Give it another year, and we will get good play from Orton and maximum development time for Tebow – which most young QBs need. All we lose are the 2012 draft QBs and whatever teams were willing to trade us for Orton. What we have to gain is a real chance for Tebow and the potentially best opportunity for that to happen in.

Some great observations and rec'd!

Tebow has a ton of work to do on his throwing motion and footwork. As a former pitching coach, I know it can be done but it takes thousands of hours of basic drills.

ESPN Report says Tebow is disspointment...

Matt Williamson reports Tebow is distant 3rd in race… says Merril Hodge was reviewing his game footage and said he is alarmingly off of pro QB standards. One would think Hodge would support the guy as he was also a non-conforming NFL player. Said he was a Clydesdale in a horse race… distressing for those that want TT to be the chosen one…

we saw last year he has ability and isn’t likely a bust, but his mechanics are still at least a year away from shaping up. He’ll get plenty of reps as a backup this year, so I don’t see any need to rush things. Patience is a good thing.

If 2011 turns into a cluster and is lost, then Tebow should start with nothing left to play for. It’s called duh common sense.

They haven’t named any starter, at any particular position, but the guys taking the first team reps give a pretty good indication who they are at this point. From all the reports coming from camp, including my first hand observations, Orton is by far the best QB we have. Although Fox hasn’t stated this recently, he has said that Orton is the starting QB numerous times during the off-season.

If you look at Tebow’s astrological chart, he was born the same day (Aug 14th) as the Broncos organization…not only that he has a major planetary configuration in the Fire Signs (Aries-Leo-Sagittarius) called a Grand Fire Trine, which bestows amazing gifts of inspiration and Leadership. I thought Evergreen was hippie-land until I moved to Whidbey.

Yeah, I lived in Conifer for a year.

Worked at GeoWater in Evergreen… I wouldn’t say hippie as much as trustafarian though. Too much money to be truly hippy. On a sidenote my co-worker went to school with Matt and Trey in Evergreen and the hippy episode that mentioned the hippy that “dissapeared” in Evergreen was legit and Mr. Mackey was a real person (almost to the tee).

Hmmm

I only lived there for a year… i am a Glenwood Springs native, but I don’t recall that store. I do recall the serenity that is Turkey Creek, however. Maybe not as peaceful as your current island locale, but probably pretty close… seems like there is a bit of a trend there hermit ;o)

That's what it seems like to me

Timmy Tebow to the rescue! Oh wait Orton still our starter. DAMN!

by mjdbronco on Aug 3, 2011 6:30 PM MDT up reply actions

I'm trying to be patient but,

I’ve been an Orton supported since he arrived in Denver, I bought his jersey before he even played a game for us for gosh sakes. I’ve seen what KO can do and it was impressive at times but lead to a lot of disappiontment. 3 and out, 3 and out. When Tebow came in last year I got that feeling that is hard to explain, I remember having that same feeling watching elway. I’m done with KO, he is decent whatever that means.

by mjdbronco on Aug 3, 2011 6:35 PM MDT up reply actions

Trust Elway...

I will place my trust in Elway to help evaluate who the QB should be and when. We all know what KO brings – he is the definition of the term “serviceable”. He will always be a middle of the pack QB – can lead a game plan and execute as long as pressure from the pass rush or the situation is limited. I find it surprising how terrible of an athlete he is (i.e. how easy it is to sack him) and that is tough being a Bronco fan used to Mr. Elway’s heroic feats… Tebow is the great unknown and clearly a superior athlete and he offers hope BUT he may not be the answer as MANY have come before him with the credentials and failed. In short, I have to believe Elway will be involved in the decision of when or IF Tebow plays and I will buy into his educated decision .

Superior athlete for QB = guy with superior arm?

Tebow sure can run, but not a very strong or accurate arm.

The lengths we go for a story!!

First of all to all you folks that say you don’t care who starts, you “just want to win”. Really? This year or in four years? The ONLY VALID QUESTION HERE is:

How do we learn the most about Tebow?
On the bench or playing?
Somebody do a poll.
It’s the ONLY issue.
Quinn/Orton ARE NOT our future and we all freaking know it.
We’re NOT WINNING THE SUPERBOWL THIS YEAR and we all freaking know it.
We simply need to learn via the quickest method possible: Do we need another QB next year? (or maybe the year after)

I’ve got another serious question.

Has anybody ever heard of a guy coming from college and ‘fixing’ his mechanics before becoming successful?
I can’t think of one but surely there has been one?

Go Broncos.

Just saw this

Just watched the NFL Total Access and they are saying that Orton is now the starter and off the trading block.
And Tebow is now expendable, or might not be in the Broncos future plans….

shite. Have we given up on Tebow? Decided he can learn on the bench better than in the game?

A strange turn of events over the past week!

Maybe the Dolphins are interested in Tebow. Nothing suprises me with the Broncos.

by rocko1 on Aug 3, 2011 8:28 PM MDT up reply actions

Michael Lombardi

by Xinnix on Aug 3, 2011 8:15 PM MDT reply actions

Both Lombardis are tweeting on it.

Vic (local) said Orton had not be told anything, but Michael Lombardi from the NFL Network said what Adam Schefter said on sportscenter: Orton not up for trade. Orton is the starter.

Then there was confusion as to whether Michael Lombardi also said Tebow could be traded. Both Lombardi’s responded. Michael Lombardi stated he never stated Tebow for trade. Vic (local) said he didn’t belive Tebow was up for trade.

Nothing has changed essentially. Orton was named the starter on the depth chart awhile ago and since the Kyle Orton trade never materialized he wasn’t going anywhere. The quarterback competition is now one-sided in favor of Orton who was always the starter unless someone beat him out.

Tebow will get there.

I was watching NFLN when Mike Lombardi made the comments...

He misspoke…plain and simple. It came out like Tebow wasn’t in the long term plans, but he meant to say Orton……that’s all it was…..he misspeaks and nobody bothers to ask him to clarify before the sensationalized stories start exploding….

Go figure…people not doing a little research before making “breaking news” stories is sad.
