This was actually a comment I made on the fanpost "3 games is enough to write off a QB". I received a good response to my comment, and felt it would make a decent fanpost. Hope you guys enjoy. This is my first shot at this...
Besides what I saw with my own two eyes, the stats support Tebow being successful in his first three games. Keep in mind, he was a rookie being put in after Orton had a couple of terrible outings. Orton was playing like the worst quarterback in the NFL against the Chiefs and Cardinals. Don't believe me? Check the stats. Before those two games, Orton had played above average and even excellent football. That being said, his last two games were pathetic, and warranted him being benched for Tebow. With the world watching, Tebow may have performed better in his first three games than any other rookie quarterback in the history of football.
Let's take a look at the records he broke: The 40 yard run against the Raiders was the longest touchdown run by a quarterback in Broncos history. It was also the longest touchdown run by a rookie quarterback in his first game. He had a 100.5 passer rating at the end of the Raider game, which was the highest ever in team history for a rookie debut. During the Texans game, Tebow threw for 308 yards, being the most passing yards by any Broncos quarterback at his home debut. He is the first rookie quarterback since the NFL merger to lead a 17-point comeback in his home debut. He has the most passing yards in a game by a rookie quarterback since John Elway in 1983. Against the Texans, Tebow also averaged 19.3 yards per completion, which is the second most in Broncos history.
I don’t know about you guys, but I think Tebow has done more than what most expected of him. I mean, come on! Do the stats matter? Should we listen to the talking heads, who weren’t even successful in the NFL themselves (Merril Hoge to be exact)? Should we say he’s not good enough because he has a strange throwing motion? Shoud we say he shouldn’t be the starter because he doesn’t look perfect in a controlled practice? Should we say he’s not NFL material because he isn’t a pocket passer? Should we give up on him after only three games because we still have the “serviceable" Kyle Orton? Should we sit Tebow on the bench after those three “earth-shattering” performances he gave us to finish the season? Are we forgetting how bad Kyle Orton played in his last two games? Are we willing to go back to Kyle Orton because the world is telling us he gives us the best chance to win, even though we saw otherwise with our own eyes?
Tebow has already earned his right to start this season. I remember sitting on the couch with my son, and seeing Tebow score that unbelievable touchdown run to beat the Texans. I remember me and my son screaming our heads off, believing that the future was finally here. I remember sitting at the dinner table, and discussing how the Broncos would soon be a dynasty again. After all, we watched with our own eyes, and saw this kid do things nobody had ever done since Elway. But you tell me again why Orton should be the starter. You try and explain to me why Tebow hasn't already earned the job. What else can Tebow do to prove he deserves the chance to start for this team? If it were any other person who had accomplished those feats in his first three games, do you think they would be sitting on the bench? Your memories must be deceiving you. I remember what I saw. And none of the MSM propoganda, or any of the coaches lack of faith, will keep me from remembering what Tebow did in his first three starts. The kid deserves to play. And nobody will convince me otherwise. Go Broncos!
