2011 MHR/Bronco Fans Census
I was insipred by the post I saw earlier in the week that asked Tebow supporters to vote on when they became fans and it got me thinking that I'd love to know who we have here and the how the different perspectives were formed that make us all unique and make MHR the best fan blogsite on the web.
This post will be part 1 in a series of Census Posts. In Part 1, I'd like to know when you consider your baptism to the Broncos to be?
Poll's after the jump
If there was a specific day that you remember declaring your loyalty or favorite memory that you can conjure up, please share in the comments section.
For me, I was born in Denver in early 1977. So I was one for SB12 (Jan 1978) and although I don't remember it, I do remember going to games before Elway and I'm told that I was upset that he was displacing Steve DeBerg!
Technically, I would consider myself a "Elway Fever Years" era Broncos fan, although I am right on the line (1982/1983).
One of the photos my folks have framed and hung up on their wall is a black & white one from Halloween when I was 5. Pirate hat, pirate patch, pirate hook, drawn on mustache, Randy Gradishar jersey. Classic costume of a Denver Pirate. Duh. I wouldn't take that thing off. To this day, when I go to Broncos games, the only jersey I wear is an old polyester home Gradishar jersey. Keepin it real.

Anyhow, please share when you would say you took up residence in Broncos Country.

Started in Greise Era.
Remember going to my Uncles house and watching Mikey Anderson run out the clock ever Sunday after church.
I Wanna be Anna's Man
Oh boy was Anderson
just a pleasure to watch.
I distinctly remember an away game vs Oakland one year when Anderson just battered Oakland’s D on the baseball infield. Everybody was filthy and bloody and Shanny got to beat Al again and Anderson ran absolutely wild.
Such good times!
#Mile High Salute
8/23 I think
Thats enough time. I just want to know when people became fans, how old they were when they became fans, where they were living when they joined BC, who their favorite players are, how many games theyve been to, and what brought them to MHR.
Love comin here, but fun to know who’s who.
1993
The year I stopped being a complete antagonist (cheering for the Raiders), and finally realized that I would be a Broncos fan for life.
I’m still not sure that my brother has forgiven me for cheering on Bo Jackson.
"Accept the fact that some days you're the pigeon, and some days you're the statue."
Didn't Bo
play baseball and football before Deon Sanders did it?
Opinions are like......, Well anyway, this is mine.
Yep.
For the Royals. I still remember him snapping a bat over his knee like it was a toothpick.
One of the greatest athletes of all time.
Truth shall be known.

hmmm...there should be a large contingent from the Super Bowl years. :P
Super Bowls are great for converting youngsters…or AFC Championship Drives. lol

Agree
We’ll see though, I have another Census question for later this week that will tell us how old most people were when they joind BC. My guess is that we’ll see 6-10 years old and then 15-20 years old come out on top.
The Kids that were 6 -10 in 1996 are 15-19, so they’re working at their summer jobs or starting school this week! They won’t vote till later.
Gawd i can't add - i should be in school
Those 6-10 year old are 21-25 – they should be voting!
Gawd, I was 21 in 1997. Good year to be able to buy drinks!
yep I was one of those kids.
Where I grew up it was either Broncos or Cowboys. I chose the broncos cause when I really starting caring about football and playing it myself the broncos were winning. The Jacksonville game still haunts me. Doesn’t help that my best friend is a Jacksonville fan just because of that game.
hahah I was 19 in 1997. :)

Yeah, I'm a little surprised by that stat so far... Maybe you're debunking a myth here.
as well as the 4 who became fans while Wade was coaching us. I gotta hear those stories.

It was September 1989
I got to meet Elway, Atwater, and Mark Jackson and got their autographs. My best friend’s aunt was in the medical field and knew the Elway’s. From that point on i’ve been a broncos fan, since age 6.
The Drive
I was 6 and that was the first football game I remember watching. I have probably watched at least 95% of all Broncos games including preseason from that day until I moved from Colorado in 2004.

I was 5 in 1986
And demanded to be John Elway for Halloween for I believe 4 straight years. I was always mad at that the bronco stickers for my ghetto rigged costume… cause one would always be backwards.
You can be dumb... that's ok! There are many dumb people.
You can be an a$$hole... that's ok! There are many of these as well.
Unfortunately you cannot be both...
Ok... prove me wrong.
I required a Elway hair cut, which in retrospect was a mullet
luckily im a bronco and a blazer fan
Hehe

Came out of the closet a few years ago.
My brother and father a life-long Broncos fans, but I always tried to have my own identity. I was born in Texas, so cheered for the Oilers until they left for Tennessee, then shifted allegiances to the Cowboys. It wasn’t until a few years ago that I realized I had watched more Broncos games than either of the other two teams combined and that I actually cared about the Broncos and couldn’t stand the Cowboys.
I literally had a “coming out” to my brother and father where I gathered them and my family together… I’ve been bleeding orange and blue since.
My earliest memories of rooting for the broncos was in 1988 when I was 7
and still remember having posters on my wall of Elway and another one of the three amigos. I’m sure I rooted for them earlier but just can’t remember.
I guess I started being a fan growing up in Wyoming because the Broncos were always televised and my family are all Bronco fans.
My favorite players throughout the years include Elway, Ricky Nattiel, Mark Jackson, Mecklenburg, Romanowski, Al Wilson, Atwater, Nalen, T. Davis, Jake the Snake, Ed McCaffrey, Rod Smith, and Jerry Rice.
I’m not sure how I found MHR but am one of the older guys here and have been a member since 08’. I’ve also never been to any pro NFL game but hope to change that this year as I’m planning on attending the Chiefs game over new years.
Am I the only commenter on this post that followed directions?

I was born in Golden and that is where the first TC (tryouts) were held. I was a little kid and a couple of us snuck through the fence and went out on the practice field at Mines. One of the coaches, it might have been Frank Filchock himself, said “Somebody get these damn kids out of here before they get hurt” and Goose Gonsoulin ran us off. I was hooked and have been a fan ever since, through good times and bad.
GO BRONCOS!!!

Needed more choices
I chose 76 to 82, I was born in 75 and remember Deburg and Morton but the Elway and 3 Amigos years definitely solidified my fanatic status! “The Drive” “The Fumble” and all the humiliation of getting blown out of Super Bowls. I remember the good the bad and sometimes the ugly.
For me
I live in NJ, and while I’m in a big sports family, the only team they care about are the Yankees. Well I hate baseball, and more then that the Yankees. Since I was young I always had an affinity to football, and I wasn’t half bad at it. Back to my parents, they never have had a team, although my mom was a big Fran Tarkenton fan and a G-men fan (I say that lightly, she may root for them but she doesn’t own any Gmen clothes, whereas she has every pink yankees clothing article lol!) as well. Both my brothers were Bears fans but I refused to fall in line with them.
I was born in 1991, and I think it was when I was 5 I started liking them. I vaguely remember the SB’s, but it was before them I liked our Broncos.
Truth be told, I actually think it was a video game, since they were the best team in it at the time. I’m a big gamer now, but back then you had to push a button before you could pass, or all you did was run. I realized that 5 years down the road lol, so I was running wild with TD and John Elway. Good stuff.
So I won’t lie to you, I was a bandwagon fan. But if you ask any of my friends, they’ll tell you its more then that, and I’ve stuck with this team and have done so proudly through good and bad, which isn’t easy being surrounded by Giants, Jets, and Pats fan. The only others are Steelers and Eagles lol, so I don’t get a whole lot of trash talking in of late, but hopefully EFX will change that!!!!!!!
Thanks for making me take the trip down memory lane super7, sometimes I forget the simplicity of being a Broncos fan and get caught up with hooting and hollering at what the team should be doing. Good stuff
If you reply to a comment/post/fanshot of mine, I will more likely then not respond to it, unless you come off like a d-bag.
I had a Floyd Little 44 shirt when I was six
but by then, we were into the Orange Crush age.

Born in the lost years
And been a fan since then, though I barely remember those last years with Elway.

To the lone fan who became a fan from 2007 to 2010:
Bless You!
You have the patience and heart we all (who remember the glory days) need!
The Broncos haven’t been an easy team to ‘friend’ in the past few years, but you sir, (or madam) are champion.
i must say
that i wouln’t have guessed that so many members of MHR became fans in the OC years meaning that those members are likely born in or around or before 1970.
I find this to be impressive. Most internet research says that sites like these skew to an audience that’s younger than that, but not here. Pretty cool.
This means that around a quarter of the people that have voted are 40 or older. Kudos (I am 35) but I respect that loyalty. Not many pro football teams have that.
Only the teams that had really strong 20 year stretches have that:
The Packers always get voted top fans because of the novelty of a fan-owned team in a Norman ROckwell town. In normal cities, there’s a helluva lot more than just pro football going on, but even if the Rockies are 20 games over .500 (they are not, its just an example) everybody wants to talk Broncos. All the time.
And I LOVE IT!
The age of our fans was the first things I noticed. Very cool. Good poll super7
luckily im a bronco and a blazer fan
Superbowl loss to the Giants ...
Was the first Broncos game I watched , visiting friends and they were all cheering for the Broncos ,,, Let me say it was’nt a very happy night when that game ended but I’ve been a fan since ….
I was a late bloomer
I was born in ‘94 but my love for football and the Broncos didn’t manifest until 2008, putting me in the 2007-2010 category. I’ve always liked the Broncos due to my dad being a long time Bronco fan, but moving to Colorado in 2005 and being able to consistently go to Broncos games in ‘08 really gave birth to my being a fan. Sadly, I have no memories of Elway and very vaguely remember anything before the ’08 season, but everything since then I remember very well. My first Broncos memory was a Thanksgiving game against the Cowboys.
I think that I’ll bleed orange and blue for life, regardless of the team’s situation.
Yeah ! when RB Ron Dane broke free for that long run which lead to a broncos win .
That was a fun season . Even though in the end we didnt win anything .

I was 18 yrs old at home in philly doing homework . the TV network was showing a
4oclock broncos game at mile high in late season . At first the game only had my
slight attention .Soon after though the TV announcers were freaking in excitement .I
looked up to see a young john elway scrambling set his feet then fire a 50 + yard bomb
complete for a TD . The stadium erupted i remember the cameras panned the crowd
people were going nuts jumping up and down the stands were shaking I thought to
myself dam what the hells going on here ? What it was Was the birth of elways
greatness And the introduction of ME into broncomania . I found myself watching every broncos game i could . I started to get to know many of the other players names. That
was when they became my favorite football team

Why isn't this green?
It wasn't him Charlie, it was you. Remember that night in the Garden you came down to my dressing room and said, "Kid, this ain't your night. We're going for the price on Wilson." Ya remember that? 'This ain't your night.' My night I could of taken Wilson apart. ~ Brando aka Terry Malloy

I started following and rooting for the Broncos when Otis Armstrong joined the team out of Purdue. He was in the same class I was. My wife was from Denver, and it was a pretty natural thing to do to follow that team.
But I was in the Navy at the time, and later in the computer industry, so we haven’t lived in Denver since the early 70s, though we still have family there.
I started back in 99.
My dad told me to pick a team before the 98-99 playoffs. My choice was between the 14-2 Broncos or the 13-3 Falcons, me being a kid, I had to pick one the best teams. Then I saw the Broncos logo and jersey and I was hooked.
Stayed on teh bandwagon ever since.
Will always bleed blue and orange.

And I was a bandwagon fan of the Cowboys, Redskins, and the Bears as a youngster. I think it was around 85 or 86 when I settled on the Broncos and took more than a passing interest in the game. I loved watching the D back then, with Rulon Jones, Greg Kragen and Karl Mecklenberg. Then I witnessed “The Drive” and I was hooked. The Broncos inspired me to play the game from the time I was in junior high, all through high school and into my Marine Corps career in the early 90’s. I also did a little coaching before I shipped out for bootcamp. I played both offensive and defensive tackle and I wore number 75 in honor of Rulon Jones and number 77 in honor of Karl Mecklenberg. My one regret was never going to college to see what I had left after a stint in the Marine Corps. Now I sound like Al Bundy!

Ah Glorydays
Glad you converted – I think for fans that became fans before 1986, winning Super Bowl 32 was so extraordinarily gratifying because we go stomped on in 21, 22, and especially 24.
This is true
I remember Green Bay driving for their first score and thinking “oh no, not again”! Then we answered convincingly, and I felt some relief. Then TD went down and I was concerned again. The fourth quarter was pins and needles but we pulled it out. I will always remember Atwater’s big hit and Eddie Mac’s block and “Its a walk in, standing up touch down for TD!”. It was the best Superbowl game I ever watched and the fact we pulled out the win made it that much better!
The run just to get to that game was amazing! Going into Three Rivers and Arrowhead and coming away with some tough wins, I should have known better than doubt the outcome of that game, they were on a mission!

Born in 1995.
Became a fan in 2005. Live in chicago. My dad is a dolphins fan and my brother likes the bears. when i was 9 i didnt really follow football. but i was watching a game and i thought the logos were cool on the helmets and then i liked the broncos haha. I remember being so mad when they lost to the Steelers in the Playoffs. And i was hoping the seahawks beat the steelers cause i hated them for beating us. Jake Plummer was like my favorite player :D
All we're trying to do is win a motherf*cking game!!
Stay the course
Being a fan in a foriegn land is tough, but it’ll make for great stories when the Broncos beat the bears this December!
I joined the Air Force in the fall of 1974, my first assigned base was Lowry,
and I arrived there just after new years in ‘75. A civilian co-worker had converted me into a full Bronco fan before training camp of ’75. Every year, she invited a bunch of people over to her house for the Sunday games; we’d all bring a frozen cheeze pizza to bake and of course eat; and she provided beer, wine, and toppings to put on the pizzas. Then after the games we’d all have Kahlua and coffee before going home. I was part of this for six seasons before being re-assigned to Germany, and it was a great way to become a life long Bronco fan.
Floyd Little years for me.
I went to Mapleton High School on 64th and Washington. Graduated in ‘75. The Bronco practice facility was down the road at I believe 56th and Washington. You could drive down I25 and look out and see them practicing during the week. That was a lot of fun. The first Game I remember watching was Broncos at Detroit on thanksgiving day Broncos 31 Lions 27 in ’74. I was 17 at the time. We were at my aunts house in Sandy, Utah that year that is why it was my first Bronco game. we didn’t have a good TV set till sometime in ‘70 But my Stepfather was an ass and wouldn’t let us watch TV on Sunday’s. I remember reading about Tensi, Taylor, Little, and Briscoe tho and I knew just from reading that I was bleeding Orange and Blue.
Love the local stuff
reminds you why they’re the Denver Broncos, not the COlorado Broncos or something else.
Early 70's
The only CO baseball was the Bears, the Rockies were the hockey team, and my Dad was building the arena that would eventually host the Nuggets.
No matter who starts at QB, we will be 8-8 or better (8-2-11)

born in '78
I suppose I became a Broncos fan then, but I listed myself under the Elway years under the poll. My dad was a Broncos fan from his time living in Colorado (I would guess he is an Orange Crusher)… so I was along for the ride my whole life.
But it was when the Broncos lost the Super Bowl to the Giants, with me sitting there watching in my Broncos sweat pants and sweatshirt, and I saw everyone hurting from the loss (except for the giants who were doing the boogie woogie on the 50-yard line…ugh), that I understood what it was i was rooting for.
Been diehard ever since….

Long answer that spans three categories.
I’ve Been a Broncos fan since somewhere in the late 70’s to early 80’s so my answer would have split to options. Being born and raised in Florida I was a fan of the Dolphins in the glory days (never liked the Tampa Bay Bucs) but as I got older my attention turned to the Broncos during the Orange Crush days. I’m not sure if i was a true fan them but I sure liked ’em.
The Elway years created a revival for me but still being in Florida (in a very small town close to Gainesville) I wasn’t a rabid fan of any NFL team but instead wild about my local HS team, the Columbia High School Fighting Tigers and the Florida Gators.
I moved to Denver in 1997 and was sooooooo excited to be in a city with 4 pro sports teams to root for. The Broncos were an obvious choice since I had followed them for so long. It was kinda of weird because I had been such a wild and crazy bleed Orange & Blue college fan but when I got here I basically quit following college football because I didn’t get to go to the Florida games and neither CU nor CSU caught my attention. In 1997 I jumped 100% into the Broncos camp and have never looked back.
As a final comment I can’t remember ever watching more than 1 or maybe 2 Gators games when Tebow was playing there and most definitely was NOT a follower of him, my sister in Florida had to keep me informed. All I really cared about was whether or not they beat FSU and Georgia.
In conclusion, when was the true moment for me? The Helicopter :-) I’d have to say that was the moment that I became absolute RABID for the Broncos and it just keeps growing. I have an opinion about what the team should be doing but won’t post here.
Quote from a Texas rancher "I don’t want all the property in the world, but I do want all that which borders mine." Well, I don’t want all the wins in the world, but I do want all of the next ones.
Epilog – The only game I ever got to go to was at Mile High and me and 1 of my sons got to watch the Jason Elam kick that tied the record.
