Let me say that I am not a Tebow guy, I am not an Orton guy, I am not a Quinn guy. I am a guy who wants the starting Bronco QB to be able to elevate this team to a playoff contender and SB champion. I held out hope that Orton could elevate his game from last year, become a better QB, lead the Broncos to a winning season. With a new and hopefully better defense, a commitment to the running game, this team looked to at least contend for a playoff spot. But after the latest failure to the Raiders, the obvious faults of Orton are on display.
Orton is who he is, a middle of the road QB who needs elite players at all positions to succeed. The fact is the Broncos have obvious holes, O-line (again a lack luster performance by everyone), RB – Moreno again shows he was a waste of a draft pick and should be a third down back at best in this league, DT – hopefully Thomas and Warren improve this unit, and CB-Goodman can you make a tackle. With all that said, the defense played well enough to win this game, the difference was Orton couldn’t play well enough to win the game.
And that is the crux of Orton, he plays well enough at times to give you hope, but in the end, you know he will let you down. I don’t want to hear about stats, bottom-line he is not an elite QB and he never will be. You could see the difference between elite QB’s this weekend and Orton, the elite guys (Brady, Rogers, Brees, Rivers) get hit, can take a sack, but still find a way. Orton finds a way to come up short game in and game out. I am sure there will be excuses, but lets deal with reality, this team will be nothing more than mediocre with Orton at the helm. Holding out hope that we can somehow reincarnate the 1986 Bears or 2000 Ravens defense in two years is laughable where you could win with a mediocre QB. Look at the past QB winners of the SB (Rogers, Brees, Rothelsberger, Manning, Brady) there isn’t a mediocre one until you get to Brad Johnson.
I don’t know if Tebow is the answer (I have my doubts), I don’t know if Quinn is the answer (I have serious doubts regarding that one), I honestly think our QB of the future is playing college this year. But regardless, I know Orton is not the long term answer here. Yes, we were competitive in the scoreboard, but realize that the Raiders did more to help us than Orton did as far as taking stupid penalties. Think if the Raiders had half the defensive penalties, would the game have been within 10 points? Probably not.
I understand that Fox and Elway and the organization believes that Orton gives us the best chance to win now, and they are likely right, which is probably more indicative on what they actually think Tebow or Quinn can do versus what they know Orton will do, which is to put up decent numbers, generally keep games close, but never be the finisher.
So I would say that if this is the future this year then I say it’s time to ditch Orton and begin the future, lets at least see if Tebow can improve. We know we are going nowhere fast with Orton at the helm and Orton looks to reached the level he is going to be at.
