Fox said in a conference call Tuesday that he's sticking with Kyle Orton as his starting quarterback despite an awful performance by the offense in the Broncos' 23-20 loss to Oakland on Monday night that ended with fans chanting Tebow! Orton had a terrific training camp and nearly perfect preseason but things looked a lot like last year in the opener: stalling in the red zone, no ground game to keep the defense from coming after the quarterback and a poor pocket of protection that resulted in five sacks and two turnovers.

It is good to hear the players support the FO and the current starting QB.
It is also good to hear their optimism. “We will win. Be patient” was the sentiment of a couple of players. Let’s kick some cat!

Kyle Orton has a worse record in his past 27
than Jamarcus Russell had in his last 27. That fact that people are okay with that and calling people that aren’t fickle is beyond belief to me. Wake up and smell the coffee Broncos fans, Orton may be your best chance to win but there’s a ton of holes on this rebuilding team, and there’s nothing to gain by starting him if we’re going to be bad regardless. He’s not under contract next year, nor does he deserve an extension.
No, make it that if you'd like
But his record is the same, which is all that it comes down to. He’s been good statistically, but if you watch the games, you know he doesn’t produce when needed, which is 3rd downs, redzone, and 4th quarter, stats that translate to wins. Go ahead and ignore the rest of my post though…

Thats what youve said more than once now you are saying thats not what you mean ?
I watch the games and I know none of what you mention are individual stats . They all require 11 players to achieve success in . The fact that you keep saying hes Jamarcus Russell implies that his bad play is the sole reason for the team losing when the fact is we cant get our TEAM to play as consistently well around Orton as the raiders were playing around Russell at that time .
But continue only problems are QB .
What else did you think they would say after 1 week...
….if ever? This is just player speak.

Who was passionate
Brandon Lloyd? If I got thrown to over 200 times and had a QB fixed on me most of the game you can be darn sure I would selling his attributes as well. Brandon Lloyd also likes to play it safe on both sides of the fence. When it appeared Orton was heading to Miami, he chatting up Tebow about all the things he thought about making him more productive .
When I read what Mario Haggan said it wasn’t so much an endorsement of Orton as it was an obedience to the FO and coach Fox.

Look, I support the FO and coach.
But you can’t expect players to say anything different. Remember players vocally supported last years FO and Coach. Only after the firing did we learn that many of the players felt quite different about the situation that you would have been led to believe by their public pronouncements.
Vic has a point that we have thrown around here for months.
Come, Mr. Fox. Sit on the fence with me. Play BOTH QB’s. Orton between the 20’s, Tebow in the Red Zone. Play to the QB’s skill set the same way you play to a Defensive skill set. Makes a lot of sense. McDaniels was close to doing just that. I think Fox is too conservative to try anything so “risky.” Too bad. I bet it would work.

Really, the two are not mutually exclusive.
Yes, we need to work on fundamentals, but I think this approach would be a good change independent of fundamentals. One could improve basics and throw a double QB wrinkle into the offense at the same time.

Should have done that in Preseason and Training Camp...
I’m already losing faith in the coaching staff. But if this would be the real reason why we aren’t doing it yet, then this staff sucks.
MOZGOD Member #35
I'm leaning more towards this
the fact that we were that unprepared was disgusting, and the fact that the offense couldn’t get more points despite being handed 150 extra yards by the Raiders is very troublesome.
or maybe he misevaluated Orton and the whole situation
hopefully your right but i’m not so sure.
Extra Dimensions?
You mean like touchdowns in the Red Zone versus Field Goals, i bet you are right. That is a lot to add to an offense ;-)
If you think John Fox is a forwarding thinking offensive coach I have to words for you: Jake Delhomme.
In most big games Jake Delhomme made Tony Romo look like Tom Brady.
Remember Delhomme threw 5 – yes 5 interceptions in a playoff game.

We ran the ball ONE time in the redzone yesterday ONE TIME this is like teh first preseason game all over again and I think we need to start asking what is Mccoy doing
but then I realize that that last games was Mccoys 4th game ever call plays in the regular season.
There is gonna be a learning curve there .
i had the same thought...why are we not running near the goal line?
I agree learning curve for everyone. I think if this had been a game against another non divisional opponent that this loss would have been easier to swallow.
I also feel that we are now seeing the real effects of all that time they missed this off season.
"Iron sharpens Iron."
The thing that concerns me is that we have coaches from some pretty pathetic teams.
I don’t care what happened with the front office in Carolina, Fox lost a lot of games there. And McCoy was a castoff from that regime. I like Studesville, but he came from Buffalo. The only talent we have been able to capture is Dennis Allen, and I hope to God he stays on for more than a season. We need continuity BADLY. I’m even content to stick with the current coaches until we get the players that they think we need to run their system the right way. I don’t think McD ever got a fair chance to implement his system the way he wanted to. If you fire a guy for failing the first time he fails, he never gets to learn from his mistakes until he moves on to a different place. If you fire a guy, he will just be replaced by another guy who is also going to make mistakes. Let’s give these guys some room to work and tweak.

Great Point
I actually am happy to have John Fox here. I love his defensive mindset and we truly need this.
I love the addition of Dennis Allen as well.
I am concerned however that we had no answer to the 5 man front Oakland put put there.
Here is something I have not seen addressed that I feel is worthy of thought.
Oakland put a 5 man DL in to stop the run on a team that could not run last year. So in watching game film of the preseason they knew what we were going to do. Fair enough.
By doing that however, didn’t they make the statement, let’s see Kyle Orton and that OL beat us?
If that could be true then you know everything you need to know about a DC’s respect for our offense and our QB.
And also, knowing Orton is not mobile, did we even try a moving pocket or anything to that effect?

Who posted that article yesterday about Tim Tebow's contract?
Tebow’s contract jumps from $11.25M to $22+M if he plays 55+% of the snaps this year. I bet we see Tebow in week 8. No chance in hell we pay Orton $9M AND Tebow $22M.
Hard to figure out for me
I think it’s extra 11 mil/yr if takes 55% snaps this year and next. Definately not LOL.
http://www.denverpost.com/breakingnews/ci_15667056
since when does 11 million = 22 million ? and after reading that link it makes LOL at how people come to that conclusion that he is gonna making that much per year when it clearly says
The total value of Tebow’s contract can escalate to $33 million if the Broncos reach the playoffs multiple times in his first four years, he has multiple top 5 QB rankings, and he has multiple league honors such as NFL MVP and Super Bowl MVP.

I don’t know how two wrong games make one better than the other, but this one was the season opener, on MNF, we had a chance to win, but played very poorly on both sides of the line. Last season, it was apparent the season was already going downhill. This loss is far away less tolerable, because it’s now and this season. How does a terrible loss last season actually make this one seem more tolerable?

there are still positive things to take away from this game
Granted we are continuing from where we left off last season. We all know Orton is not the answer but the defense looks much improved…I hope they can stay healthy and do a better job on run D.
"Iron sharpens Iron."
Well...
I personally can’t think of a good reason right now but we’re not calling the shots. No one here knows for 100% certainty if Tebow would fare any better than Orton. Orton had a terrible game and in general is about as much fun to watch as watching paint dry. However, lets not lose sight of the other 52 players on the team.
I know Orton/Tebow is the hot topic, but there is no reason every single conversation on here must turn into an Orton/Tebow discussion.
vdisciple simply is looking on the bright side. I agree, the defense does look improved. Run D seems to still be our weak spot but in our first game without much of a preseason we fared better than we did in either game last year vs the Raiders. Hopefully we can take some lessons away from this game and improve upon it and just keep doing that week to week. Its a little too early to throw the entire team under the bus. Looking forward to Sunday if for no other reason than to see what happens.
Why are people ignoring this?
And the fact that he’s worse then Jamarcus Russell over the 2 Qbs last 27 starts. No excuses should be being made for this, its not a knee jerk any more and the fact that people are calling it that is baffling. Its really not one game KK
Its too many years of too many losses and the biggest is the loss of confidence in the direction we are going.
For instance: We are gonna trade Orton, We are gonna keep Orton, Tebow is the backup, Tebow is third string, we are gonna run the ball but we can’t run the ball, we are gonna stop the run but we can’t stop the run.
Yes some patience might be required but many people have been patient and its the reality that has set in.
We are no longer very good and we are not sure when we will be.
We haven’t been consistent since John Elway retired.
We are owned by the Raiders in our own stadium. They came in and bullied us off our game plan and we had no real answers.
The Chargers laugh at us and we have no reply.
We have had numerous terrible defenses.
We have heard 2 new coaching staffs swear they are gonna make us better and we can’t believe that anymore until we actually see it.
I am usually very optimistic but I am not even sure anymore what or who the Denver Broncos really are or what or real plan is.
We are starting a lame duck QB, with another as the backup. Where is the real plan there? If its Orton and they really believe it buy out or trade Tebow and send him elsewhere.
If its not Orton, then what are we aiming at in the future?
Andrew Luck?
The odds are pretty slim thats going to happen unless we trade up for him.
So if they are unsure of what to do, how can we be sure of what is going to happen with this team?
Does that make any sense at all?

I wish the NFL would put fans in charge for a year.
Let them cut the whole roster and switch QB’s and change coaches every other week the way they want, like it’s a video game or something. Let them try to draw up a playbook, manage a roster, deal with the salary cap, call a game. All of it.
And when 99 percent of them give up after a day and the league collapses under its own weight, maybe the constant hysterics will die down.
It’s gonna be a long year. This is not a good team right now. It’s not going to be for a while. But it’s one game. Let’s see how things play out as injuries heal and the new system sinks in. Relax. Don’t panic.
And stop thinking you could do better because you couldn’t.
The Broncos should start Tim Tebow immediately. That way, the defensive line will play better.
I think that's how many fans feel, and exactly why Orton shouldn't be the QB.
What do we have to gain by starting a guy that’s not gonna be back next year if we’re not gonna win games? Tebow may not be better, but you find what you have in him so we can draft a Qb next year if need be, instead of delaying that a year to get Orton some more losses.

That would be Tom Brady your talking about, not Kyle Orton. Bad QB’s lock on targets, and end up missing about half of their passes. Brady targets guys, and hits ‘em about 75 % of the time. Look. Orton targets Lloyd and Fells 17 times and hits 9 passes. If you happen to watch the game, it’s obvious how he locked into those two.
Brady doesn’t lock into Wes Welker, yet throws to him 12 times and connects 8 and throws to Deion Branch 9 times and connects 7 and throws to Hernandez 10 times and connects 7. There’s a huge difference, especially if you watch the game. He isn’t just checking down to backs, he finds wide receivers.
...it's what you do that defines you.
exactly.
Look at the check downs from Orton, 5 to McGahee where i’m sure he was not the guy they were trying to go to.

LOL BS you see what you want to see . Orton is locking on while hitting 9 different receivers. To go through all your progressions you have to have time and when teams are getting pressure like the raiders were against us of course the ball is gonna come out fast .

A few comments, cause I have to put them somewhere...
1. For a quarterback to give us the “best chance” to win, he actually had to give us a chance to win. For a quarterback to be the most accurate passer, he has to do better than 52%.
2. Tebow will not start because it would mean Elway and Fox would have to admit they were wrong. Tebow will win somewhere. I hope it’s Denver. If not, they should trade him or cut him.
3. Compare the way Orton played against the Raiders this year (and his game last year against them) and the way Tebow played against them last year. Look at the difference in the way the team carried itself when it was down.
4. Tim Tebow’s old backup had over 400 yards passing on Sunday. Just sayin.
5. If I hear the word H-back one more time I will go into a murderous rage.
6. Fox is trying to preserve a style of football that doesn’t exist anymore. Elway is trying to preserve a legacy (cult of personality) that Tebow threatens. They can take their smug arrogance to a 3-13 record, or they can give the team a chance to win now. Playing Tebow is not about seeing what you have next year. It’s about winning now, with audacity and verve.

People hear love the idea of bulding an identity
Perhaps it’d be easier to do behind Tebow.

Sorry,
I don’t believe for a second that Elway has a sinister desire to see any of his Quarterbacks fail in a petty, selfish, childish, fear that they will eclipse his own legacy. First, I have watched Elway since he was at Stanford – as a QB, citizen, leader of men, and human I have seen NOTHING whatsoever that would give the slightest hint that he is such a small, selfish, petty individual. In fact, he appears to be quite the opposite.
Second, as good as Tebow may one day be (although I have my doubts) I don’t think any reasonable person believes he is any threat to become the next Elway/Montana/Marino. Even if you think for some reason Elway is of such low character, I think you would concede he probably knows quarterbacks, and would be well aware that Tebow is of little threat to his legacy.
Frankly, I find your suggestion that Elway is conspiring to make Tebow fail to be silly and in poor taste.

Orton has a new nickname courtesy of mdierk the "Tin Man"
He has no heart, can’t move and the oil can is too far away.

Dumb question "Orton vs Quinn/Tebow" If Orton does not play
then you have guaranteed Denver into the Luck sweepsteaks. YES I would cut those three for Andrew Luck right now.
easy solution for fox to ease the tension in bronco nation.....
Put some specialty packages together for tebow in the red zone and actually use em!! I get Orton can manage the game pretty well for the most part but he just can’t get us in the endzone. That will not only give us the best shot to score a td which is a proven fact, it will give the most passionate fans in football what they want, because in the end we’re the ones who put $ in the teams pocket.
