Denver Broncos Sign WR Quan Cosby; Waive RB Jeremiah Johnson
According to the official twitter source of the Denver Broncos, the team has released running back Jeremiah Johnson. Jeremiah Johnson was signed to the Broncos practice squad in December of 2010. He had some flashes of ability in the pre-season and even though being waived on cut day, he was signed as the only running back on the Broncos practice squad.
Johnson was made active by the team after Knowshon Moreno had to miss last weeks game. Johnson being waived is a good sign that Knowshon Moreno could be ready to go for this Sunday. That being said, the Broncos have also been trying out other running backs today.
With the waive of Jeremiah Johnson, the Broncos signed receiver Quan Cosby to add to a very depleted receiving core. With Eddie Royal already injured for the next several weeks, Cosby could make an immediate impact.
Cosby is a 28 year old 5'9, 180 pound receiver. He played in all 16 games for the Bengals in 2010 with 0 starts. That size makes him comparable to Eddie Royal and that is the slot he will most likely fill. Cosby was used a returner in Cincinnati.
If Brandon Lloyd is back this Sunday, it would add the a receiving core that would be Brandon Lloyd, Quan Cosby, Eric Decker, Matthew Willis.
The Broncos also signed TE John Nalbone to the practice squad..

I posted this comment on the last post, but it would make more sense here...
So why did we sign Quan Cosby instead of a guy like T.O.? He can be counted on to make plays, and his behavior has really calmed down the last couple years. Cosby isn’t a bad WR, but I think T.O. was a better option. Or maybe just activate Riley
TO is still rehabbing his knee injury. This morning he was in Korea receiving stem cell treatment.

yeah, i didn’t realize that. there hasn’t been much talk about him this offseason so i hadn’t heard anything about him rehabbing.

Quan Cosby, the replacement for Eddie Royal.
So this Sunday: Eric Decker, Matt Willis, Quan Cosby?
Can we please sign Eron Riley and/or D’Andre Goodwin?

I don't get it either Nick. Makes more sense to activate Riley than sign a new guy who doesn't know our system.
Why did we activate Johnson just to release him? I hope we are able to put him back on our PS now.
The only thing I can think of is that this is a filler until our WR get healthy and then he’ll be cut. I still don’t really get it though.

i dont think we can add Johnson to PS
We added TE Nalborne. We are at the limit to PS spaces.
"Iron sharpens Iron."
according to nfl.com nalborne was put on the pup list
so i think they still have one practice squad space
by turbo champion on Sep 20, 2011 5:29 PM MDT up reply actions
I don't understand why they didn't activate Riley
Unless they really want a veteran that they can depend on? That’s really the only thing I can think of with this. Just think it’s odd that we have two young receivers on the PS and we sign another to the active roster.
Maybe they didn't want to lose Riley or Goodwin
If they took them off the practice squad until a veteran comes back, they might lose them trying to put them back on the PS. If they keep them on the PS until a long term spot opens up on the team, they have abetter chance of keeping them. If another team wants them, the Broncos still may have a chance to keep them by signing them to the team from the PS, but not if they have to clear waivers before going back on the PS. Apparently Johnson was worth the risk, but the Broncos valued Riley and Goodwin more highly and didn’t want to take the chance. Quan is just a short term thing.
If I can't have high expectations that succeed, I''d rather have high expectations and be disappointed than have low expectations and be resigned to losing.
by OrangeandBluesBros on Sep 20, 2011 5:22 PM MDT up reply actions
agreed
Seems like the Broncos like Riley and Goodwin a lot, and will be determined to keep them around as long as they can. When the injured come back, Quan is guan.
...conceptually, it's fine, but the narrative needs work...
Makes sense, however...
It kind of defeats the “next man up” culture that the Broncos are trying to instill, IMO. I guess I understand it to a point but would rather have seen them promote from within.

Yeah...not surprised about sharper! We don't need defensive help?
Olshansky signs w/Miami, WTF? John Nalbone, seriously? Eron Riley still on PS? What team am I watching? Quick, somebody throw me some koolaid, my levels are apparently too low:)

Miami also signed Nate Jones
i hope he is still with them when we play them, i want to see somebody run him over for his subpar play in denver, maybe they’ll sign cox too and we could get at em both
Didnt we get Jones from Miami?
Did they take him back? If so, then AWESOME

interesting piece of info on Johnson
The Broncos are hoping he clears waivers, so that they can move him back to their PS, I’m sure, but if he DOESN’T clear waivers, and some other team picks him up, that team will get him for two weeks, free of charge, while the Bronco picks up his paycheck for those two weeks.
I thought that would be enough to prevent waiving him, but I guess the Broncos gotta do what they gotta do….

They are small paychecks by NFL standards.
That was hard to watch, but fun too. Andrew Luck won't be playing for Denver in 2012. But he sure may be in Kansas City.
the secret of any budget is discipline
I agree, this isn’t anything to fret about, but you like to see that discipline extending to every decision, not just the big ones.

my last five drafts easilly outplay the broncos last five drafts! (this years being he exception perhaps)
AND we dont have a QB lined up at QB last week.

It is sad to say, but several, in fact, most of MHR’s regulars would have had a better 2009 draft than McDaniels.
Pouncey (2010) and Orakpo (2009) would both be Broncos if I was making the draft day calls.

I assume they signed Quan Cosby to help with the return game.
That’s mainly what he was used for in Cincy. With as thin as the WR group is right now, probably not a smart idea to have Decker returning kicks. I still would have preferred Riley over Cosby.
I just really hope Lloyd is ready to go next Sunday, I don’t want to go into the Titans game with Cosby as our #3.
That is my thinking
Decker starts now, so relieve him of return duties.

They are also expecting Lloyd back I would say
They thought he was coming back last week .. so it will be him and decker . with the new guy or willis in the slot postion and new guy can return punts. Makes sense so far.

Looked up Cosby's 40-yard dash time; 4.5 sec.
Was hoping he was at least on the fast side, but he’s not. Not surprising since he’s only 5’ 9". He’d better be real quick and shifty.

weird move but ok...
we are thin, haven’t really seen this guy play since he was in college but he was a go to guy then, but is filler until thomas and or royal comes back, my one wish for an early christmas present, no more injuries….period
Good hands good punt returner
I guess protecing your best players is more important then bringing in potential 3 weeks into the season.
Can we play some FFFFootball now!!!?
I think this Quan move is for a dual purpose WR/PR...
The fact that they hung Jeremiah Johnson out to dry bothers me, as there is no room on the PS now that they resigned Nalbone…One, Knowshon Moreno probably doesn’t stay healthy, and, two, Goodwin did pretty good at PR/WR, they could have brought him up and resigned JJ to the PS after waivers cleared…Makes no sense with this Quan Cosby guy at 5’9" 190. He better be fast…
OK...Played minor league baseball with the Angels for 4 years...He's 28 and was drafted in '09.
4.48 40, 1.47 10 yd split.
A little off subject...
But since we are talking about roster moves, what do you guys think of checking out Adrian Awasom, DE that the Vikings just released to make room for Williams? Might be worth kicking the tires on. Especially with the injuries mounting a bit.

Not sure I'd pull the trigger on this one, if I were EFX
Awasom was drafted in 2005 by the Giants. Played with them from 05-07 (ending up on IR in Sept of 07). During that span he appeared in 17 games with no starts, logged 1 sack, 12 tackles and 2 assists. Two days prior to the Giants playing NE in Super Bowl XLII, he was arrested in Phoenix for DUI (he was not eligible to play in the game due to being on the IR). The Giants sent him home following the incident. He was released prior to the 2008 season.
There is no record of him playing in 2008.
He played for the United Football League’s Las Vegas Locomotives in 2009-10, where he had 30 tackles, 4 sacks and a pass deflection in 14 games.
In 2011, he was signed by the Vikings, appeared in 3 games with no starts and had 2 assists.

Funny story about Quan
I remember for his draft day, none other then Bill Cosby was in his support group, and he said he never knew him or met him before but heard he had the same last name, so decided to be there and support him on a trying day. He was of course hilarious throughout it.
Other then that, not to sure about him. Nice to have a healthy body at WR though.

I have absolutely no opinion and most of you shouldn’t either. These bottom of the roster decisions are not long term ones for this organization. They are week to week need decisions.
Johnson nor Cosby has a long term outlook in Denver.
No biggie. I just don’t want to see a game where we run out of WRs again. That was pitiful planning.

This is the Quan Cosby that was a WR with the U of Texas and Colt McCoy…he was a decent slot WR that had good hands as I recall. James Jones for Green Bay would be an interesting option but what happens when he isn’t used enough once Royal is back and 1st rounder Thomas stops getting hurt (had to laugh a little as I typed that) and manages to crack the starting lineup? Not sure the Broncos want another Packers castoff that is complaining about playing time…Javon Walker anyone?
I like this move... althought I'd prefer a DT to Warren spot
If Jeremiah clears the waivers again, can he be resigned to our practice squad?
