We're gonna end up losing our team playing Orton because of money

Don’t know how you’d want to play for Fox or Elway with the way they’ve handled the Orton situation.

by NateBroncos on Sep 26, 2011 9:36 AM MDT reply actions

As long as the players are behind Orton (which according to reports is true)

Orton will continue to start unless Fox is 100% confident Tebow is the better option. Every report out of dove valley is that the players are still firmly behind Orton. Unless that changes soon pulling Orton and playing Tebow because he might be our future would cause the players to turn on EFX way more than keeping Orton at QB. What if Tebow turns out to be a worse option, that’ll cause the players to turn on EFX even worse. It’s real delicate situation right now and one that won’t play itself out for at least 5 weeks.

Think of it this way. The general perspective among fans is that we won’t go anywhere this year so we should just give up on the season and play Tebow to see what we have in him. That seems that like a smart choice from an outside perspective but I dare you to tell Brian Dawkins we’re giving up on the season 3 weeks in and playing the backup QB just so we know what we have in him. If Fox pulls Orton for Tebow without a 100% confidence that Tebow will be an upgrade, that is basically what he will be telling the team. Now if you were a player would you wanna play for us, I know I wouldn’t.

For this reason we won’t see Tebow unless 1. Fox is 100% certain Tebow is better than Orton and/or 2. we are officially eliminated from playoff contention.

And now for something completely different

we're giving up the year keeping in Orton.

We may suck regardless of Qb, but sending out the same crap product and expecting different results is foolish. Dawkins may lose faith in EFX if they don’t make a move, as will other players. There’s NOTHING to gain, we won’t lose the locker room, i’m sick of that excuse, and if guys 100% support a guy that’s on pace for back to back 4 win seasons, they’re part of the problem too.

by NateBroncos on Sep 26, 2011 10:37 AM MDT up reply actions   1 recs

I'm not going to argue which QB is better

I got sick of doing that well over a year ago. All I’m going to say is that as long as the players have more confident in Orton than Tebow, Orton will start. If that changes (and I said this in my first paragraph but forgot to add it as a reason in my last) then we will see a change but I have yet to hear anything out of Dove that suggests the players have lost faith in Orton. Until this happens or any of the other reasons, Orton will remain the starter.

And now for something completely different

by AlbertaBronc on Sep 26, 2011 10:45 AM MDT up reply actions   1 recs

these are pros

you expect Dawkins or Bailey to ever call out a player? It’s not gonna happen, and rightfully so. Bailey re-signed and said he had faith in Tebow at the time, Dawkins has said the same, Lloyd supported Tebow until it was clear Orton was gonna stay, then he supported Orton. The guys are gonna support who the starter is, and if they don’t we have the wrong guys in the locker room.

by NateBroncos on Sep 26, 2011 10:59 AM MDT up reply actions   1 recs

thats not the point

the point is if the players are still behind Orton and feel he is the best QB and Fox makes a change, then the change better work out because if it doesn’t, the players are not gonna be happy. This is all I’m really trying to say. If the players are no longer behind Orton, then a change has to be made.

So once again this is why Fox only makes a change if 1. he is 100% confident that what he’ll get from Tebow is better than what he’ll get from Orton, 2. the players are no longer confident in Orton or 3. we are officially eliminated from the playoffs.

And now for something completely different

by AlbertaBronc on Sep 26, 2011 1:13 PM MDT up reply actions

All I'm saying is what I think it will take for Fox to make a change

and all I have to go by are the reports that come out of Dove Valley but if the players are not behind him then a change will be made. I don’t know what they feel and neither do you.

And now for something completely different

by AlbertaBronc on Sep 26, 2011 1:22 PM MDT up reply actions

Well now we might as just argue conspiracy theories

I’m not defending Orton, I know he’s mediocre. I’m just saying what I think it’ll take for Fox to make a change.

McJedi spent two seasons saying things that were never bore out on the field. Like having a team of tough minded versatile players.

Seems like the lying to oneself hasn’t ceased in Denver.

If Ryan Clady, LLoyd, McGahee, Moreno and Co were fully supportive of Orton, you’d think it would show once in a while. But it doesn’t.

It’s like that 90s song “More than Words” but about Orton instead of some chick that probably had short hair and was a feminist.

Elvis, you need to play once in a while to earn that mega contract of yours.

Most players are smart enough to tow the company line no matter what. So I’m sure if Tebow is named starter we’ll hear how they all like him and think he can lead this team to victory.

i think you're stretching

how often have players quit on their QB in the NFL? Guys aren’t gonna do that ever, come on, we don’t have a bunch of diva’s and guys that do that get labeled as bad teammates when they’re trying to get work on future teams.

by NateBroncos on Sep 26, 2011 1:18 PM MDT up reply actions

I don't expect them to quit on the team

but if they do not have confidence in the coaching staff they will not want to come back for another year. The last thing you want is your players not believing in your coaching staff. Doesn’t mean they’ll quit but it’ll be a lot harder to convince them to stay or for other FA’s to come here.

Look at the McD era, a lot of players lost confidence in McD after the Cutler fiasco and while they didn’t quit on the team, they weren’t exactly in McD’s corner either.

And now for something completely different

wow

now the crappy play of everyone on the team is orton’s fault.

by Rainbow skyline on Sep 26, 2011 2:12 PM MDT up reply actions

Yes. We played some real crappy run D yesterday. Larson was awful and so was the O-line in pass block.

Poor Orton did all he could, but then our D let him down. What a shame.

Can someone pass me the paint can, I need to huff some more fumes.

I didn't mean everyone played bad

I meant that apparently when anyone plays bad, it’s orton’s fault for not inspiring them.

by Rainbow skyline on Sep 26, 2011 6:40 PM MDT up reply actions

Or it’s just that Orton is the worst or one of the worst Broncos on the field. Hard to win when your QB is one of your worst performers as Kyle was vs Oakland and Tennessee

They will support whoever the starter is, unless said starter disses them or some such

Alberta (and all of you).I have a question.

RE: Klis’ article regarding the extent of the silence in the locker room after this defeat. Been there. You think about a lot of things, but mostly you think about what has to change to correct the problem. How many of you think that any locker room solidarity behind Orton may have been the subject of those thoughts…perhaps the first tinges of serious doubt about the QB? Total speculation of course, but losses like this would seem, in a general way, to result in either a change being made or eventual loss of team effort. To me, the silence suggests deep emotion and thought…those are the things that lead to change.

by idahobronc on Sep 26, 2011 5:02 PM MDT up reply actions

Not Worried

I think this is a bit of an overreaction. Players will want to play for John Elway because A) He’s freaking John Elway, B) They are still getting a paycheck and C) There is too much pride in an NFL player to say, you know, I don’t like how this executive handled this situation, I am going to give 75%. Other teams will see the lack of effort on the player and then they will be out of a job.

by RockyMountainThunder on Sep 26, 2011 10:41 AM MDT up reply actions

money isn't the issue

seeing as Tebow is worth around 7 million :p

by AlbertaBronc on Sep 26, 2011 10:28 AM MDT up reply actions

i don't like this excuse either

if anything it makes me more angry because it shows our coaches didn’t do crap in terms of planning. What if Orton went down week 1? Quinn/Tebow’s screwed cause we didn’t prep him. This defense says to me, “our coaches aren’t doing their jobs so wait”. And Orton has gotten all the reps and still looks like trash, and has digressed from last year, so i could really care less if he has more reps, you gotta fix your wrongs instead of being stubborn, we suck, make a change.

by NateBroncos on Sep 26, 2011 10:39 AM MDT up reply actions

Ego and pride of new management/coaching.

I highly doubt EFX foresaw Orton playing this poorly in the real games. So their plans are out the window in a bad way.

Will be an interesting next few games since Orton seems completely lost without McJedi around to fix him.

Elvis, you need to play once in a while to earn that mega contract of yours.

by McGeorge on Sep 26, 2011 10:54 AM MDT up reply actions

I’m not so sure they (the coaches) think Orton has played bad. He hasn’t had a 4 INT melt-down game. It could be that Fox looks at like this—vs. OAK, we lost due to all the penalties, vs. TEN we lost on the 4th down play. So Orton isn’t the problem.

I don’t look at it that way but I bet Fox rides Orton several more games.

I don’t think Tebow will do any better and could even do worse (in the short term) given the lack of OTAs and coaching in the past year.

Your idea to give BQ a chance makes a lot of sense and would be fair to the guy. But it isn’t happening.

by Rainbow skyline on Sep 26, 2011 4:45 PM MDT up reply actions

I agree here. I do not like those theories.

Orton won’t be playing much longer if he continues to play like he has in weeks 1 thru 3. His benching will be his fault.

Defense

Defense can no longer be the scapegoat. I am willing to consider o-line/McGahee, however if teams were more concerned by the threat of a running QB might open up the run game a little bit more. I don’t know if Tebow gives us the best chance to win now or in the future but I would sure like to find out, and don’t give him a dumbed down playbook. Give him the whole thing and see what he can do.

Give people a chance to succeed or fail, don’t make this determination for him. If he fails, fans will see it and more open to other options. If he succeeds, that’s good for anybody who is a true fan of the Broncos.

by RockyMountainThunder on Sep 26, 2011 10:45 AM MDT reply actions

Mason's By the Numbers

Andrew Mason’s statistics of Orton’s last 10 minutes in games the past two years is pretty damning. Especially when you consider that his numbers were phenomenal first 6 games of 2009.

by RockyMountainThunder on Sep 26, 2011 10:48 AM MDT reply actions

Defense

The D has played well, we have lost by a total of 6 points….I’m not willing to put all the blame on Orton for yesterday, (running game, our Dbs making Hasslebeck look like an all-star, Wilhite, how don’t you stop that wing and a prayer?) but at some point the O has got to do a better job. Am I the only one who thinks the Broncos don’t know how to run a screen? No Kool-Aid here, but I think we have a shot against GB if we get healthy, other than that, I’m willing to give Orton until the bye week, if we’re 1-5, time to but in Quinn or Tebow, at least they both have some athleticism and won’t curl up in the fetal position…..

Football is a TEAM GAME!! One player doesn't win it for you, one player doesn't lose it for you....When it comes down to it, I just want to WIN!!

GO BRONCOS!!

by milehighinTO on Sep 26, 2011 11:15 AM MDT reply actions

start Orton, but use Tebow

Orton had some great throws yesterday. He did manage the game well. The players are playing for him to my eye. However, if you have a shiny toy like Tebow, why not play with it? For instance, in “goal to go” situations, even if the play call is to run inside, if Tebow is taking the snap, the defense HAS to pause a split second to see if it is play action or some other type of keeper. That would give the advantage to the O line to get a push. Take advantage of the 3 QB rule!

by Bradoncadonc on Sep 26, 2011 1:38 PM MDT via iPhone app reply actions

Yea, the resistance to use Tebow seems to go against the “gives us the best chance to win” rhetoric. If we really are trying to win, it isn’t clear why Tebow isn’t in the game in goal to goal situations.

by McJay on Sep 26, 2011 2:10 PM MDT up reply actions

That game manager title is such a farce. A game manager protects the ball, can throw a screen pass and can be accurate. A game manager wins games when his team’s defense and STs play well.

Orton isn’t a game manager. He is a game loser based on his play and his key/critical mistakes in the 4th quarter.

Hasselback was a play maker yesterday and he made plays on his last drive. Orton threw an INT. That’s all you really need to know about which QB won and which one lost.

Elvis, you need to play once in a while to earn that mega contract of yours.

by McGeorge on Sep 26, 2011 4:17 PM MDT up reply actions

That’s the problem with writing – it doesn’t come through that my game manager line was tongue-in-cheek. That being said, I do attribute things like reading the defense, making line adjustments, etc. under game management, and I do think Orton is good at that stuff. The problems just begin after the ball is snapped and there is a need to “make” a play rather than just “complete” a play.

In contrast, as you point out, Hussulbuck definitely made plays for his team yesterday. Not to mention, on the Britt injury fumble, he was over there to make a tackle, and mixed it up with our LB who leveled him. I like that fire in a tight game like that. Sorely missing for the Broncos right now.

by Bradoncadonc on Sep 26, 2011 6:03 PM MDT up reply actions

It’s not missing. It’s just on the sidelines.

It’s only missing in the QB we keep trotting onto the field.
