Hey all. I'm new to this site as a poster, but I've been following it now for years and I must say, it's a blast. I live on the western side of the Rockies, so I have to rely on my fellow Bronco fans and this site for news. I don't buy into much of what the Post puts out because I think it can get pretty agenda oriented. Sports reporters don't have to follow the same "cold hard facts" requirements as do general news journalists, and it's really started to show at the Post's sports desk. Anyway, with all the talk about Tebow's fundamentals (personally I say quit hammering the round object into the square hole and let him EVOLVE more than develop - but that's another post) and whether or not they can be fixed, myself and some other keen observers have noticed some pretty disturbing fundamental "tells" of Kyle Orton. Now, I don't know if this is going to jump, or if it's even in the place I've intended to go (I'll learn) but I hope you find it informative and thought provoking. Folks, this is scary.
Now, if you're like me and you think things like this can be fixed, maybe not so much. But it's not my point here to ask which side of that fence you're on. My point here is to simply ask if anyone else has noticed Kyle's "tells". I noticed them last season and now I heard CBS's sixth ranked broadcast team we've played ourselves into pick up on the same things during the Titans game.
Basically, this is what we're seeing. On Orton's drops he will tell the defense it's a screen if he keeps dropping past the seventh step. This is serious broadcasting folks. It's true you have to "sell" the screen, but this has become very obvious - enough so that the broadcast booth has seen it.
The second thing he does is backpedal. Most QB's will be slightly turned to the side during their drops. This is normal, but it also means that opposite side throws require rotating the body (leftys are slightly turned left and must rotate for right side throws, righty's slightly turned right and must rotate left). This too is pretty normal stuff.
However, when Orton's first read is to the left side, he backpedals in his drop, thus lessening the rotation but also tipping the defense.
So... now the test. If Orton backpedals in his drop and keeps backpedalling, where's the ball going?
