Denver Broncos Final 53 - Man Roster

Well, as the sunset and the night falls, some players careers are lost forever, some will catch a second wind and some can finally catch their breath.

What is often referred to as the worst point of a coaches season is finally over; sure there will be tweaking, there will be necessary adjusting, but for now this is it. Below are the men who possess the shoulders that fans of the Denver Broncos can ride on for the entire season.

Gone are many players that fans thought would still be attached and attached are some players that most thought were as good as gone. So without further ado, here are your 2011 Denver Broncos!

Star-divide

Quarterback (3) Kyle Orton Defensive Linemen (10)

Matt Prater

  Britton Colquitt

Lonnie Paxton

The average age of this year's team is 26.3 years, with an average experience of 5.4 years. By acquisition, this roster has been filled by 24 Draft picks, 19 Free Agents, 6 via trade, 3 Undrafted College Free Agents and one waiver claim. By my count, there are 16 players that weren't a member of the Broncos last year, half of which came through the draft. Not a bad ratio considering the past few years. The first test in this draft is passed, with 8 out of the 9 draftees making the club. The 9th, Jeremy Beal, could still return on the Practice Squad too. We'll have to wait for the future to unfold to see the rest of the story.

So what do we think fair Broncos loyalists? Any gigantic mistakes? Who would you switch and or swap out?

GO Broncos!

I am amazed Mohammed is there.

Amazingly amazed. He is slow, lacks instinct. But he pursues well.

PS......

Not final untill all the WaiverWires have been claimed. Or trades made……

really. IMO 'pursues well' when relating to mohammed is better said "pursues often". he's always behind the play.

he’s got heart and tries to get in the play but his anticipation is poor and his speed poorer.

Hagan may be a step slower but has better instincts due to his experience level. Tavares Gooden off the waiver wire?

Haggan was terrible in coverage last year and way too slow to be covering to begin with.

He did great last as an OLB rushing the passer and was ok helping against the run but there was a lot of blown coverages by Haggan last year. He was just too slow.

Yes, slower than Mohammed.

Mohammed also played all 3 LB positions in camp this year. That is tough to do for a rookie. We saw how hard it was for Eddie to learn all 3 WR positions in his first year under McD. It takes time. Mohammed lead the LBs in tackles in the preseason and this isn’t something that should be overlooked in a rookie. His learning curve may be taking longer than Miller and maybe even Irving but considering what was on his plate it is understandable. Plus I look back at his college production and he was always around the ball. I think given time he’ll improve and become a very capable player for us. i definitely see him having a role similar to Woodyard except with the ability to play SLB and WLB for us whenever we need a rotation.

As far as speed. Mohammed ran a 4.65 time while Haggan ran in the 4.88 range.

Tim Tebow wears 3WM and drinks Tuscan whole milk.

by BroncoMath101 on Sep 4, 2011 9:34 PM MDT up reply actions

To me Mohammed stunk most dropping back into coverage...

but that may have had something to do with the vanilla scheme for game four?? He was just like EVERYONE in our defensive back field….right there two steps behind the receiver. It was almost like Fox told the boys to let them catch the ball first so we could work on tackling. ;)

Mahammed, however, stunk in coverage consistently through the preseason.

Don't think they'll pickup any LB off waivers

So, I think Mo is safe. He is very smart and can play more than one LB spot. He was a finalist for the Academic Heisman. He’s a plug-n-play guy.

by Schwerepunkt on Sep 4, 2011 6:56 AM MDT up reply actions

I agree

What I heard about him before the draft was that he’s not the most athletic LB out there, but at Cal it was his instincts that were his strengths. One teammate said that Mo always knew hwere the play was going. It will take him some time to adjust to the pro game, but I’m betting he does.

I am actually happy with our safeties.

McBean and Harvey are taking up space because of injuries that we could have used at other places….I’m kind of upset about our Corner situation, but I understand Squid got hurt, and though I wanted to see what Cox was capable of, I wasn’t disappointed to see him go. I think he can be good, though.

I was REALLY upset about Jarmon – not because he’s all that great, but because we traded Gaffney for him and I think we could have used Gaffney in addition to our other WRs. I would cut Harvey to make the room.

I've got to say Cox was the biggest surprise to me.

It has to have to do with his investigation/court case, otherwise I just don’t see cutting him. Xanders made it sound like the decision was based soley on his play and I just don’t buy it. He didn’t have a very good preseason, don’t get me wrong; but he has a lot of tape from last year and he’s a pretty good corner and we’re thin at that position.

If he’s found not guilty (big if I know) we’re going to regret this IMO.

Potential?

yeah, it was a head-scratcher for me, but I loved Harvey in college. I just hope the coaches think he has some potential left to show. He needs to get his act in high gear for sure. Get some some Von Miller positive attitude!

by SBBroncoFan on Sep 3, 2011 4:36 PM MDT up reply actions

Jarmon had potential too

not as much as Harvey obviously but Jarmon would’ve been a 2nd or 3rd round pick in his draft had he not been suspended from college and forced to go through the supplemental draft. Both players played well though and I’m not angry to see Harvey make the team. Makes the Gaffney trade a dud though.

Few surprises

McCarthy losing to Bruton (must be due mainly to ST’s).
Jarmon losing to Harvey and especially Unrein.
9 O-lineman (though Ramirez and Hochstein are still on the bubble).

Other than that not too many surprises. Hopefully guys like Weber and Riley clear waivers and hit the PS.

And now for something completely different

by AlbertaBronc on Sep 3, 2011 4:39 PM MDT reply actions

surprised at first, but I understand

agree with the mccarthy statement. I would love to get Riley back and possible turn himself into a rod smith. I can dream. I’d like to get weber some shots, but we got too many other qb projects on our hands. somebody will still get cut in a few days when we add a waiver addition (another CB). I like chris harris working hard too to have an undrafted player on the team. good message.

by SBBroncoFan on Sep 3, 2011 4:48 PM MDT up reply actions

Harris was a little more than people thought

There were a few stars (i.e., more regarded UDFAs), such as Weber and Harris, who didn’t get hyped but deserved our attention. Weber actually did, but not till late and in the context of the Tebow issue.

It’s hard to draw conclusions about players that haven’t played much. Cox has other issues so it wasn’t entirely a talent-based decision but he looked bad, too, so the Harris roster decision wasn’t that odd. It’s just that we haven’t been exposed to him.

Stepping back and looking at the big picture.....

We have so much more talent than last year! 2010 starters are 2011 depth…..That’s how it should be!

I don’t envy any of the “bubble” guys until tomorrow has come and gone. I expect we will see quite a few changes between now and tomorrow night.

Go Broncos!

Manny Ramirez, Chris Clark, Herb Taylor, and Russ Hochstein shouldn’t sleep too well tonight. They may not be Broncos tomorrow.

Same thing for Ryan McBean, Mitch Unrein, and Mike Mohammad.

Also, Ty Warren might be headed to the IR if we pick up a couple players like Derek Landri and Anthony Hargrove.

both have problems, but I think Unrein really hustled in the preseason games. he seemed more hungry. so he deserves to be on the roster one-two more days than jarmon.

Very much more happy than at this time last year

Carter over McCarthy…OK
Unrein instead of Beal or Jarmon..coaches see more than I do.
Three RB’s..get ready for a BIG back..say some one like Gartrell Johnson or Chris Jennings.
Keeping Ty Warren on active..means that he is ready by fifth game IMO
Haggan and Robinson do not fit the LB style but youth may have been better IMO
McBath needs to show how special he is, and Bruton is just excellent on ST

Wyoming Kid Made It!

He may not stay but I’m glad Unrein is still around. It’s a great for him as not too many UW players go on to the pros. Good lick to him!

by RebelChris on Sep 3, 2011 5:43 PM MDT via mobile reply actions

looking at Unrein

The hardest adjustment that I had when projecting this roster was the change back to the 4-3/Fox-style of defense. Unrein made little sense under the McDaniels regime (which also tells us that he had more than thought), but he makes much more sense now. His speed and versatility along with the injury-depleted DT situation make him a viable reserve, and it isn’t necessary to grant more than that. He also remained on our PS throughout the 2010 season, which is notable.

Players often gain followings despite their flaws and others remain under-appreciated despite their strengths. A few good or bad plays (or lack of either) can distort perceptions. We really aren’t getting a complete picture, nor are we as appreciative as the coaches of the basic math that — for instance — makes reserve OTs essential but reserve ballhandlers not essential.

I can offer explanations at this point but I can’t pretend to have predicted many of the roster decisions. A big part of the problem is roster math, which I’m only estimating. The Unrein and McBean decisions make sense if you recognize that there is no depth at UT & NT without them, but their permanent spots are tenuous if the consensus opinion of their abilities is correct. What’s true for today’s decision may not hold tomorrow.

Only got to see the 4th qtr of the AZ game

But Unrein actually stood out on more plays than any other D-lineman during that time.

by MakeCents on Sep 3, 2011 7:31 PM MDT up reply actions

I agree

Unrein may not stick with the team past tomorrow. However he seems to be a hard worker. I’m not saying he’s an outstanding DT that’s going to get to the QB every play and make highlight reels everynight. But he seems good at plugging up running lanes and sheds his block well enough to get in on the tackle if the play has past the line of scrimmage.

Not only that but he’s a Wyoming kid and I have to support the local talent! It’s been bred into us! ;)

look to S, too

What I mean is that coverage doesn’t have to come from CBs. McBath and others at S can play nickel.

I balked at the idea of cutting McBath because of his continuing utility in pass coverage. It’s not that he hadn’t regressed over the last year, since he apparently has, but he’s still far too useful in coverage to be casually tossed aside. By the same token, McCarthy was likable but loses out in comparisons based solely on pass coverage ability. SSs are just not as important in today’s pass happy game as FSs, despite their crowd pleasing hits.

Check back with me tomorrow when I come up with my newest rationalization for the latest move.

there isn't much use for the extra WR

Royal, Decker, Lloyd, Willis would all be on the field in 4WR sets down to 1 WR sets. We can’t field a true 5WR set right now (until DT returns) but even with DT back we are much more likely to deactivate someone else (Willis) and run J.Thomas as a 5th WR (or green, or Fells, or Moreno, etc…) for the rare occasion where we want a 5WR set.

Think of the 46 gameday roster, and the 53 behind it as dispensation of “reps”… Every play has 11 offensive reps and 11 defensive reps. Keeping Riley active (and I voted to do so, at the expense of a DT, McBean specifically) means one spot on the 53 is accounting for zero offensive reps, and given that our STs reps are all occupied, probably zero game reps period. Teams already consider it a neccesary evil to carry swing OTs and G/C as reserves on the 53 who will get zero reps, they probably balk completely at the idea of a skill player on the 53 with no reps.

Add in that we have Warren committed to no reps on the 53, and I think they were feeling the pressure to maximize EVERY roster spot with ideal assignment math, or “rep” math.

It all makes much more sense in hindsight. The big evaluation problem for us fans is that the whole mess is apples vs. oranges. The decision to keep one player over another isn’t always fungible.

Have courage for the great sorrows of life and patience for the small ones; and when you have laboriously accomplished your daily task, go to sleep in peace.

Thanks for the perspective

Eron just flashed so bright , in that game, I got blinded. I agree in retrospect that sacrificing rotational players on defense for an inactive, albeit quite talented, skill player is not worth it. Personally I think Eron has more upside than Willis, but if you look at it from a strictly backup point of view Eron probably wouldn’t be able to just step in and play as well as Willis this year.

by InRodWeTrust on Sep 4, 2011 2:27 PM MDT up reply actions

My bet is that Riley was released today specifically because EFX want him on the practice squad.

They release him today so that they can sign him to the practice squad. The Broncos obviously aren’t done making cuts and it would be more difficult to slip Riley by on a day when only a few dozen players are cut (due to new signings) than a day when 800-some players are cut. I imagine that was the plan with the majority of their practice players.

At least, that’s the spin I’m putting on it.

Either way, though, having sex with someone you barely know when you’re both under the influence is, at best, stupid.

I try to stay away from this issue

There’s a lot complexity to this issue that isn’t reflected in the media’s presentation of it. The act of raising alternative scenarios can be misconstrued as siding with the accused/defendant but it’s unavoidable if one wishes to broaden the field of possibilities beyond the somewhat stereotypical narrative of events.

It’s possible to keep an open mind about this case without siding with either party but it’s also rare. Most people draw conclusions based on incomplete evidence. It would be wise to suspend judgment at this point since none of us is in possession of all the relevant facts that will ultimately determine this case.

With the improved pass rush (night and day from last year) the secondary also gets better. Ayers setting the edge on one side and Doom on the other for the run defense and the increased speed…I think we move up to middle of the pack at the very least.

We still have a way to go up the middle but I like Mays at MLB and really like Moore at FS. Bunkley and Vick at the tackles I think are also an upgrade along with Thomas, when he gets healthy.

changes from last year

If for no other reason, we’re better because we have two elite players we didn’t have — Dumervil and Miller. 2009’s defense was rated 12th in points allowed and 10th in sacks. The loss of Dumervil in 2010 led to a precipitous decline in points allowed (32nd) and sacks (32nd).

I agree with the thinking regarding Mays, Bunkley, etc., too. Beyond the changes in personnel, Dennis Allen as DC and the offense’s emphasis on running are major impacts on the defense. And the speed of our defense, particularly the LBs, has increased.

In general, we have a far greater chance of creating turnovers & negative plays. Our prospects for creating QB pressure have dramatically improved. And our pass defense will likewise benefit. Run defense may continue to be a problem but the changes at LB offer some hope of improvement.

One thing I heard on Weber sort of made sense.....a little....

Keep him and cut Quinn. Quinn is not the future here. Let Weber and Tebow develop over the next year or two. I mean, do we really see signing Quinn to an extension?

I guess they feel Quinn can run the offense better in emergency (#2's job right?)

I hear ya though.

I'm 100% for this. But I guess it's history

EFX appear to be headed to a youth movement, which I’m totally for. Why not Weber? Not that Quinn is old, but he has zero upside.

4 Corners 5 Safeties...You know what that tells me..lots of zone

McBath is a converted Corner so maybe he can play man.
Quinton Carter can play nickel (or Dime since Bailey is at nickel in 3rd down)

This right here is keeping the best players, adjusting to your personal. We had a lot of potential at Safety (Bruton and McBath+Rookies) and less so at Cornerback. If squid was not injured, you can bet that Bruton or McBath wouldn’t be here. I’m pretty excited to see us against a 5WR set. I think We’ll see 2-3 CB’s and McBath/Bruton/Carter replacing Dawkins while Rahim covers. (I like McBath in the role)

Don’t know about Mitch over Jarmon but I’m no scholar.

With only the O-line in protection the QB should have the luxury of a full .7 seconds before Doom introduces him to the turf.

McBath

You can’t call someone a converted corner if the last time they played corner was in high school or early in the college career. He is a safety and that is what he was drafted to play. Too bad he hasn’t lived up to his promise thus far.

He played corner and now he plays safety so I see him as a converted Corner

He was the 36th best corner in the country and then played corner at college before an injury sidelined him. He is a converted corner. Was a corner, coaches converted him to safety. Keyword there is converted him.

Depth Issue

The list of positions where the Broncos are thin is a long one. No way we end up with the 10 names on the Def. Line that are there currently. Even with picking up some players from the waiver wire, does anyone think that the Broncos can possibly be deep enough this year? Elway has said it more than once— there is a “three year” plan. Translation: the Broncos have a chance this year if the improbable happens, there are no injuries to starters and the first string doesn’t wear down as the season progresses. In all probability, with the depth issues, no one in the front office is going to jump out of a window this year if the Broncos don’t make the play-offs—and neither should any Bronco fans. It’s called a rebuilding year. But if the Broncos do as well in next year’s draft as this year, it just might be a “two year” plan.

expectations

I’ve heard a few analysts say we can go 7-9, but I expect 8-8. I looked at our schedule and 10-6 is not out of the question, as I noticed the Raiders and Cheifs have really struggled this preseason. this new kickoff rule looks to be in our favor too. we’ve never been able to stop big ST plays and create a good KR. the rest of AFC West was better than us there. I think we can be AFC West #2 team.

I'd hope we take a look at

Tyrell Sutton, Igor Olshansky, Tommie Harris, and Derek Landri. Harris was an absolute beast for Chicago years ago, but got hurt and wasn’t the same since. I saw him in person once. He was a beast of a man. I wonder if he just doesn’t have it anymore. I’d also like to see Ricardo Silva to give us an extra DB. Derek Landri looks the most intriguing IMO.

Apologies if this was already covered here…I skimmed through comments; but with Cox gone and Squid injured who’s gonna fill the void? I’d vote Eddie. I don’t buy the argument that punt return burns out a guy like Eddie…the more touches by our dangerous guys the better.

Decker

Can see Decker as he seemed to do a good job on kick returns, and has the best hands. I shuddered every time we were receiving punts. It seemed like we fumbled every other reception. At some point Bay Bay will be stepping into the WR package, so Decker may be #4. Was thinking though that although Decker has good straight ahead speed, that Willis may be actually “quicker” as far as broken field running . . .

Like everyone here, those last two or three spots – McCarthy, Jarmon and Riley – certainly seemed to go against what I had seen and heard but the question I’ll pose is, if we brought those three onto the roster – how many games would they be active for? I don’t think any of them, or the guys we’d have swapped out for them, will be active come game day.

I have MHR loaded as one of my tabs on Firefox. I come to this site every day, bar none. Of late, my AVG antivirus blocks the site, on occasion, and notifies me that a threat from “exploit” was blocked. Yesterday, I had access most of the day, until the post about Xanders’ comments about the cut down was put up. I don’t want to cause any alarm, but I’m wondering if anyone else has had the same experience. I’ve brought it to the attention of MHR and SBN, but I’ve gotten no direct response. I don’t want to be prevented from getting my fix of all things Broncos, so could someone please respond?
