The Elway Blueprint:

1. Stud pocket passing QB who can scramble when needed: fail
2. Stud edge pass rusher: pass x2
3. Stud left OT: pass
4. Stud cover CB’s: I’d say pass.

Looks like he feels the key ingredients are mostly there. The question is whether Elway feels TT can ever be a great pocket passer or not because Orton ain’t getting any more mobile any time soon and will probably be gone after the season is over regardless. I guess we’ll find out on draft day 2012.

Orton looked pretty good in the preseason.

He’s no Fran Tarkenton, but he was mobile when he needed to be. Almost even picked up a first down on a run.

That's funny because I seem to remember the guy taking garbage sacks all last season.

That's funny because I thought CompUser was talking about preseason . . .

Nonetheless, there were a couple games last season in which Orton was the leading rusher. That shows two things: (1) Orton is not as immobile as haters like to paint him, and (2) the O-line really did blow – hence, virtually no running game . . .

Do you really think Orton will magically become more mobile than he has ever been before? Reality Check. Elway’s comments show that none of the QBs on the roster fits what Elway wants. Reality Check.

"you’re looking for the athlete at the position who can operate from the pocket and get out when he needs to."

Elway described a QB that we don’t have right now. He didn’t say it directly because that would be stupid which he is not. Therefore it’s safe to assume what he wants and will attempt to acquire.

As the ancient Tibetan Philosophy states "Don't start none, won't be none!"

ok what Elway described (to me anyway)

is a QB who has been polished. I think we have that in Orton. “Get out when he needs to” is what Orton can do, and its what Tebow is going to do better when he gets his chance. I think Elway likes what we have at QB and I don’t blame him, we def have talent there.

"can get out when he needs to"

i am a huge fan of orton being our starter this year, and really like his smarts, his arm, and his pocket presence. but He is by no means the guy who can get out when he needs to. his shuffle-run doesnt do him much good when the pocket collapses.

by Jay Fin Anderson on Sep 7, 2011 1:37 PM MDT up reply actions

When he needs to he can. That’s not where he makes his living by any means but I’ve seen Ort move out of the pocket. I think what serves him best is his awareness, he will have a better idea pre-snap than Tim if he really is gonna have to GTFO.

Saying that he simply can’t is wrong, saying that he isn’t at his best when he does is more on point. When Orton “needs to” leave the pocket it’s in his best interest to find an open WR or RB. Tebow has much more upside out of the pocket than Orton does but needs to refine his game some. He will (hopefully) get plenty of time to do that this season and throughout the summer and I’ll be looking forward to Orton doing the Broncos QB position justice.

What??

Show me 5 times where Orton has actually done this with any remote success. He’s one of the most immobile QB’s in the league.

by scooter17 on Sep 7, 2011 5:29 PM MDT up reply actions

5 times?

so it would only take 5 times to prove that Orton can actually move? I see what your saying but you are still under the assumption that everything is black and white. Orton can move his behind when he needs to but it is in his best interests to find someone down field.
It’s not about how fast he is, it’s about how fast he reads what is happening and reacts. Orton is good at that and I’m comfortable saying that he can (if he makes the right decisions) move out of the pocket.

My point is that I don’t see how this argument can be seriously made if you actually WATCH Orton, and how many times he takes sacks that 75% of starting QB’s would be able to avoid. He’s just not a great athlete and he has subpar pocket awareness.

by scooter17 on Sep 7, 2011 5:51 PM MDT up reply actions

My point is

is this argument can be seriously made when you take into account the play of the OL and the fact that Kyle does have pretty good pocket awareness. He can side step a player or two in an attempt to make a play down field. Don’t compare him to Vick or Tebow out of the pocket, that is too easy. Let him do what he does and I bet he will surprise you and a few others.

a solid starting QB in the NFL

will be able to make a big DL miss once or twice. Orton can extend a play a second or to by using his feet AND his head. He isn’t going to outrun anyone, but he is going to out play or out think others.
I’m not saying Orton is a mobile QB, I’m saying he can do something you obviously won’t give hi credit for.

but you never know

he could cut Tim tomorrow and I’d be wrong, it wouldn’t be the first time lol. I just think that Elway likes what Orton and Tim brings to the table and he wants to wait and see if one of them can start to develop some of the others game. I think that if Tebow could do more of what Orton does he would start, and if Orton could do more of what Tebow does he would get an extension.
My money is on Tebow to develop more.

Interesting

that there is no mention at all of Quinn in all this discussion . . . seems to me that perhaps he will be out next year and Webber will be “in the competition” for starter in training camp.

by bronco.fan on Sep 7, 2011 4:46 PM MDT up reply actions

well I consider Quinn

to at least keep the competition strong and could have some possible (small) trade value. At worst he keeps Orton and Tebow looking forward at best he can contribute in some sort of back-up role. as for Webber I think he made it to the PS, I’ll be waiting to see more from him but I do like him.

Thats a fair call...and Tebow is a lot further along as a pocket passer than Orton is at being mobile...

And unfortunately, you cant teach or learn speed. You can IMPROVE it…cant get it though.
It has a lot to do with an athletes genetic make up, what their fast muscle twitch is etc.
I am betting their are no sprinters in Orton’s family. Thats not a dig at him….Manning and Brady aren’t mobile either….they have EXTREME pocket presence and great systems to over come this.

It's called reasonable deduction.

Are you saying we are unable to see that Orton isn’t a guy who can escape pressure? Are you saying Tebow is a guy who is comfortable in the pocket?

Using Elway’s own words, it is not a stretch to say the QB he wants is not on the roster.

right

so you could also reasonably deduct that Elway likes at least one if not two of the QBs we have on the roster. I’m not saying Orton is mobile at all but I do think he can “get out when he needs to” and I’m not saying Tebow is a pocket passer (yet) but I think he at the very minimum “can”.

I think Elway might not have a choice with the QB situation right now.

Too many other holes to fill and no QB worth taking in this last draft. Remember all the news about us working out all those QBs? Perhaps the writing has been on the wall longer than any of us would like to believe.

by Tim Lynch on Sep 7, 2011 12:41 PM MDT up reply actions

well we see our QB situation differently

I think Elway does have a choice and is taking his time on Tebow. Orton probably could have been moved this off-season if we received something worth the risk of throwing Tebow in with the 1’s. What Elway has done instead is create a tough competition at QB. What we have done is completely fail at trusting one of greatest Broncos with our team.

I totally disagree Tim.....my feel is Orton is on a short leash and Tebow is starting to show better pocket presence.

I read a great article by Doc Smith over at IAOFM, and the system that Fox/ McCoy is putting in is a power run game complimented by a strong vertical game. This is taylor made for Tebow, and Orton can run it until Tebow is ready.

The difference between those two problems

Is that Orton is not going to suddenly improve into a guy who can escape pressure.

Tebow’s problem on the other hand – has a very good chance of mostly going away if he gets reps. Orton has had years of starter reps, so he’s more or less a known quantity. Tebow may NEVER get comfortable in the pocket, but we won’t know that until he gets some serious gametime reps.

by scooter17 on Sep 7, 2011 5:31 PM MDT up reply actions

right

I think if Tebow and Orton had the best of each other in one player they would be pretty unstoppable, but that will never happen. I like how when each of them looks over their shoulder they see the other excelling in something they consider a weakness. The player who can step his game up the most will be our leader.

by BroncoJoe311 on Sep 7, 2011 5:40 PM MDT up reply actions

Gametime reps

won’t necessarily help Tebow’s development and might well hinder it. NFL QB success means being able to find the open man when several are running routes. We don’t yet know how good Tebow can become at this, because in the spread offense he operated out of in college it wasn’t a necessity. That’s why, coming out of college, he was viewed as a developmental project, even by those those who felt he could become a good NFL QB. The disagreement between those who felt he’d be good and those who felt he wouldn’t was whether or not he could learn to recognize defenses and situations and go through his progressions rapidly. Playing in games that count means he’s going to do what he can do, right now, which is run if his primary receiver is covered. The best way to learn to look at his first receiver, then his second, then his third in rapidfire order is to do it over and over again in practice without consequences to his team when he’s not quite fast enough and gets “sacked”. If he has the discipline to concentrate on this in games he’s going to be tentative and slow at first, and will hurt his team with sacks, interceptions and inaccurate passes. To his credit he did concentrate on his progressions in preseason and he was as slow and tentative as I expected him to be. If he does this this in counting games it will help his development but will cost the Broncos games in the short run. If, on the other hand, they simply “let Tebow be Tebow” he’ll do fairly well (until teams learn to game plan his weaknesses) but will fail to develop and might well lock in tendencies that will limit how much he can develop. The bottom line is he entered the league as a developmental project, not — repeat, not — as an NFL ready QB from a pro-style offense. People who are optimistic about his potential (I’m one of them) need to get this through their heads.

Tim, so you don't keep up with the game-by-game stats?

With YOUR Denver Broncos? The NFL even had a vid on their site (might still be there) where, at one time last year, the commentators were having a laugh over Orton’s being the leading rusher on the team at that point. Of course, they weren’t referring to Orton’s mobility but to the Broncos’ pathetic excuse of a running game.

Nonetheless, Orton doesn’t have to become more mobile than he was before. All he has to do is to stay healthy, and he has sufficient mobility. He has already shown that, much as you are loathe to admit it.

But perhaps he ought to have more mobility like certain others, such as JaMarcus Russell (before he got fat), Bradlee Van Pelt, Alex Smith – remember Bobby Douglas, Norris Weese? Oh yes, Tarvarius Jackson is really mobile. lol

He certainly doesn’t want to be a failure of those with such poor mobility as Peyton Manning, Philip Rivers, and Tom Brady have exhibited. Nope, he doesn’t want to be like them. He wants to go to the playoffs . . .

BILLY THOMPSON GOT SHAFTED!!

Okay, then he is a great mobile QB.

My eyes tell me he runs like he is wearing Ronald McDonald shoes and he is about as easy to trip up as a 1 legged donkey.

But yeah, he must be a great mobile QB because he once led the team in rushing first downs. Sorry, but stats lie. I’m just tired of trying to convince both Tebow and Orton maniacs that the stats don’t paint an accurate picture.

Look, I want Orton to start now, okay? Can that be enough? Or must I anoint him one of the greatest players of all time before I am allowed to have an opinion on the matter? Tim Tebow came out and flopped, Orton did not. Elway’s own words tell me he doesn’t like either QB right now. Orton because he’ll never be mobile enough to consistently get through the muck of a play breaking down and Tebow because he is so….uhg with his mechanics – which means his timing, his pocket presence, and game manage ability absolutely SUCKS.

Tebow has one year to show SIGNIFICANT progress. If he doesn’t, then I’m thinking John (Bena this time) might be right about our future starting QB isn’t yet on the roster.

I’m just not going to sit here and argue til I am blue in my face with either side – the Tebow side or the Orton side. I’m just over it…you can’t reason with a Democrat or a Republican for the same reasons. Your minds are made up!

Dude it is what it is. If you think Orton is elite, I’m sorry. He never will be. He could be Tony Romo-like if carried by the rest of the team sure. But do you think Elway is looking for that in a QB if it is NUMERO UNO on his list of needs to win a championship???? To be carried by the rest of the team? To “manage” the offense?

I don’t buy it. I’m sorry that so many do, cause you are setting yourself up for disappointment. I’m also starting to think those that think Tebow will be that guy are also setting themselves up for massive disappointment.

because when you’re sacked it doesn’t count as a carry. If the defensive ends run by him and the field opens up in front of him because the secondary is covering receivers he can of course run foward until a 320 pound tackle catches him from behind, but that doesn’t mean he’s mobile.

Tied late into the 3rd quarter against a team that beat us 59-14 behind that known rusher, Orton. Then I saw him bring the team back from 17 late in the game for a win. Then I saw him being competitive against the Chargers, and, behind a starting Oline (as poor as it was), leading all rookies in efficiency last year—albeit only with 3 games. In the preseason this year, without OTA’s and behind 2nd and 3rd stringers, more delivery motion and all, I saw him throw a perfect 40 yarder against Dallas from the pocket. Saw him lead the team to a position for a game winning FG. Saw him complete a 94 yard drive, late in a game with all pocket passing, including a 43 yard TD to avoid a shut-out. Preseason efficiency rating of 108, 20 for 31 (65%), and over 300 yards. TD and no interceptions. So, for some reason, he had a lapse in his “timing” on all those completions, including the long TD throws. And those “ugh” mechanics didn’t seem to get in his way. And his game management ability against Oakland, and the Texans, and the Chargers, as well as his ability to get the team into scoring position—hmmmm, maybe it doesn’t “suck” as bad as you say. Anyway, I’m sure you can explain away all of this since it may mean that despite those “ugh” mechanics, and no “game management ability” and after only having started in 3 games as a rookie, Tebow may just develop into a starter. Forgot, you are “over it” as you can’t reason with anyone on either side who have their minds “made up.” Based on your gross generalizations, without really considering the on-the-field performance of Tebow as a starter last year, it is you who have made up your mind. I’m not saying that Tebow should be the starter, but as a Bronco fan, I am amazed at so many “opinions” based upon vague valuations of “mechanics” as if by throwing that out there, you don’t need to explain the efficiency ratings, the passing completions, the perfectly thrown long balls from the pocket — notably when he has some protection. To say Tebow “came out and flopped” is a complete disregard for the facts, which shows me that either you are biased, or oblivious to Tebow’s actual performance on the field. Now, say that Claussen flopped, then no argument there . . .

Tebow flopped??

What are you talking about? He’s been fine. He plays about as capably as you can reasonably expect from a guy who has just 3 starts to his name.

Seriously Tim, if you already think Tebow flopped, you need to step away from the ledge. Significant progress usually doesn’t come until you are a starter. Rodgers sat for 4 years, and he still was fairly unpolished in his first year as a starter. A few years later and, well you know the rest. Relax. Tebow will probably be fine. To say he flopped is … crazy.

Tim, why are you assigning hyperbole to me?

Did I say Orton was one of the greatest players of all tilme?

Did I say he is a “great mobile QB”?

I only made the claim that he is more mobile than he’s given credit for. That is all I did, isn’t it? I said he’s “no Fran Tarkenton,” didn’t I?

I am not one of those people who makes vague, general statements about a player. I document what I say. It looks to me as if your mind is made up . . . which is typical of anti-Orton people. Fortunately, I am a formerly anti-Orton person whose mind was changed through my research of him and being able to see the factors behind offensive failures that go beyond the quarterback.

It was Bill James, in his 1986 Baseball Abstract, who said, “Bad organizations will tend to project their weaknesses onto their best players, and ultimately will dwell not on what the player can do, but on what he can’t.” It seems to me that this is what has happened to Orton.

Dude, you said he was more mobile than Brady and Manning. If your definition of mobile = “rushing yards” then sure maybe. But when an NFL scout talks pocket mobility, Brady and Manning will be on everyone’s top-10 list and Orton never will be. Watch their pocket awareness and watch Orton’s. It’s … drastically different.

by scooter17 on Sep 7, 2011 5:53 PM MDT up reply actions

I dont' know why you cannot get my point . . .

Why do I have to break it down and explain it? Okay, here goes: Orton can run faster than either Manning or Brady, and he can play outside the pocket better.

Now, in my 50+ years of football, I have watched more quarterbacks than you can imagine. I even played it at one time. Having said that, I will grant that Manning and Brady are better than Orton at shifting around in the pocket. But Orton will never be? Never is a long, long time. That kind of claim really hurts your credibility. And while Manning and Brady – two of the greatest QBs ever to play the game – may be better in the pocket than Orton, that doesn’t necessarily drop Orton out of the top 10, or 15, or however down you want to put him, and it doesn’t make Orton bad, either.

If Orton was top 10, Denver would have gotten 2x 1st round picks

for him in the offseason. If he was top 12-13, they would have gotten a first round draft choice for him. Top 15, definitely a second rounder. The fact that GMs did not move to acquire Orton shows you were they rate him. Maybe there all wrong, but remember no one wanted him. He was always an emergency or contingent QB pick up. Look at all the QBs that changed teams.

I have always liked Orton, but atm, he is not rated very high. Maybe he will be after this season.

Elway did not say that about Tebow's deep pass . . .

Brian Griese did. And I disagree with Griese at this point. Orton led that league at one point last year in passes over 40 yards, and he remained in the top three in 20+. So, while Tebow has thrown a couple nice deep passes, Orton did it consistently all last year, until his rib injuries of his last two games. Therefore, Orton is not only the best deep passer among the three on the team, but he is also one of the better deep passers in the league. His numbers prove that.

AZ....he had some good throws...but he missed a lot too....

Greise’s point was that Tebow is the best long ball thrower of the QB’s. He’s a QB that comments on the broncos specifically. Tebow’s success throwing the long ball is good……he rarely missed, and this has been a strength of his since college (Greise mentioned that too).
So you believe what you want to believe….I will take Greise’s word. I am not saying Orton is a bad deep ball thrower…he threw a lot of them…but he might not be as good as Tebow.
Take that for what it is.

That's the point . . .

Orton might not be. In other words, we have not seen enough of Tebow to tell. Using the eyeball test, what I have seen out of Tebow on long passes are moonshots. I’m not saying this in the interest of debate. That is simply what I have witnessed.

By the same token, when you say Orton has missed “a lot,” I can say the sky is green. But when we talk about how often Orton missed, he completed 62.2 percent of his passes at 31+ yards. Moreover, by the same eye test, he has put the proper arch on them, putting them on a rope when needed, and laying them over the defenders’ reach when necessary.

And when I say Orton is one of the better deep passers in the league, those are not only my words. I have heard that from a couple color announcers during games, including Simms, another former quarterback.

FWIW, While Orton is not particularly mobile

He DID rank 21st among QBs in rushing yards in 2010. Which means he picked up more yards with his feet than 11 other starting QBs. Actually 12 others when you realize that Tebow was one of the top 20.

So, Orton’s mobility is not his strength, but he’s also not the worst in the league.

Rushing yards != mobility.

Peyton Manning had less rushing yards than Orton, but Manning is much more “mobile” in the sense that he has a remarkable ability to sense and avoid pressure – an ability that is distinctly missing from Orton’s toolbox.

Let’s just agree to disagree on Orton’s mobility. I’ll gladly eat a big plate of crow if Orton scrambles his way to one Broncos victory after another this season. Because at the end of the day all I care about is seeing the Broncos win.

Actually, yes, Orton probably became more mobile during the offseason and preseason

as a result of recovering from injuries, putting on some weight (I think), and maybe getting stronger. But do you really want Orton (or whoever the quarterback is) to “scramble his way to one Bronco victory after another”? Hopefully, he’s able to hand the ball off or complete a pass without having to scramble at all.

And yes, we will have to agree to disagree on Orton’s mobility, but we can agree that the Broncos winning is the only thing that really matters.

There are quite a few more. I remember the final game against KC in 2009. Orton went back to pass and was wrapped up by an unblocked defender. He twisted out of that grasp, right into another. He twisted out of that one and scrambled out to the left flank, where he completed a pass down field, on the run.

Clips are nice...Tebow's got plenty of them too.

My eyes watched every single game and 95% of the time Orton takes a sack when the play breaks down. That was my point. Elway wants a guy who can create something out of nothing. Tebow can do that, but Tebow can’t play from the pocket, so right now Tebow isn’t the guy Elway is looking for either.

The reality is, we have 3 average or below average QBs. :)

Boydy, Tebow looked like a linebacker trying to play QB in the pocket . . .

He twice hung receivers out to dry – almost got Anderson killed. He hung onto the ball too long. He skipped the ball off the ground with an otherwise ridiculously easy pass. He again showed an inability to check down very well. He has a long, long way to go to become a good pocket QB.

What, do you want to make this a Tebow vs. Orton debate now?

Hell, BVP has a few of his own. I can dig up some Bobby Douglas clips. You are either missing the point, or you are diverting it. The fact is, Orton is more mobile than you give him credit for.

Now, regarding your metrics, can you tell me where you got the 95% figure? And since you brought up “average,” would you define “average” for me? Would “average” perhaps be 306 yards per game and a 96.0 passer rating? Would that be “average”? I guess that would put Peyton slightly below average with his 293 yards/game and significantly below with his 91.9 passer rating last year, wouldn’t it?

I know it’s ridiculous to compare Orton to Manning. But it is also ridiculous, IMO, to use metric terms without being able to document them. That’s what I’m getting at. I have seen the “average” term out of some posters on the football message boards, but you are better than that.

Tebow has made some very good improvements in the pocket, and according to Greise, Tebow is the best deep thrower on the roster, so i think Tebow is pretty close.

Tim Tebow is what he is, take him or leave him.

I don’t see Tim progressing into the ultimate pocket passer most want him to be, it’s not what he was taught. Blame that on Urban Meyer for his system or on Tebow for not learning the whole role of the quarterback, knowing that one day he would have to do it in the NFL. Too me it makes little matter whether Tim’s mechanics are sharp as a tack, I’ll take his fierceness and competitiveness over any flaws he has. If he does perfect the pocket mechanics then that is a plus in his pocket, but I see him winning games by what he has right now…Tim can never hope to be exactly like John Elway and Elway surely knows that, but on the other side of the coin, I’m sure Elway knows what he has in Tebow.

by bfree2bronc on Sep 7, 2011 9:13 AM MDT up reply actions

Disagree to some extent

Tebow learned what he needed to lead the team he had in Florida. Being a smart kid, he can be taught the skills he needs to lead the team they way Fox and McCoy want the team to be lead. Elway’s comments are very telling – a QB that can lead from inside the pocket. Pretty clear what he is looking for first. Judging by preseason, I would say that Tebow is working hard to learn to lead the team from inside the pocket. I am optimistic.

by Flunkie on Sep 7, 2011 9:26 AM MDT up reply actions

I'll stop short of saying his progression has been stunted during his time in Florida,

but he has shown signs of struggling coming out from under center. Two key things I have watched that he needs to improve on. #1) his reads and progressions through the receivers have to be quicker. He has to go through them in less than 1.5 seconds because after that you can’t rely on the OLine holding up the defense much longer. #2) in be quicker to make his reads he will have to have patience and in that great players slow down time in motion. That takes traing and lots of it. Where you see things slower in real time. It can be done and there are some training techniques on this. His footwork and delivery will come with time in games, I’m not really concerned with that part. Overall, I feel that Tim Tebow is our future and win us many games and championships.

Elway was NOT a pocket passer when he came to Denver. Many may disagree, but he is on record that he needed to learn that skill. The more I think about it, the more I think Elway is squarely in Tebow’s corner…trying to teach him from HIS lessons to make him GOOD from the start.

Kyle Orton is more mobil than most people think.

Kyle is the type of quarterback much like Tom Brady who feels more comfortable in the pocket than out. His bread and butter is the playaction pass and he often uses it. I like how he mixes up the plays and doesn’t show his hand on any given play. Kyle does need a solid OLine to ensure his safety in the pocket and he uses his time allowed pretty darn good. I wouldn’t ever classify Orton as a scramber, but he can get out once in a while and make plays. Being highly mobil is not his forte…

by bfree2bronc on Sep 7, 2011 2:02 PM MDT up reply actions

Yes

we aren’t going to win any games on Orton’s scrambling or running but we can stay in games because he understands when to leave the pocket and has nice timing with the WRs. Like you said on plays where he is called to move out of the pocket (like play action) he does pretty well. Lets just hope that our OL stays healthy this year.

So true

He needs a good line, like all the elite guys Brady, manning, even bree s when they are not feeling comfortable you can tell, this year Orton will hopefully be better protected by the o line and balance in our offensive scheme, so I’m taking my sip of kool aid and stating that we will be vastly improved this year

Was pretty funny. Their offensive line is pretty weak from what I have seen and VonDoom should have a field day against them. Also, Robert Ayers seals the edge very well and that seems to be his M.O as of now.

I guess what can you expect from a rival team’s blog though.

I thought the article was mostly fair.

I agree that the ability of Denver to stop their run game will be the biggest key to the game. They think they can because of our injuries at DT and who’s left to play.

I think we need to stack the box, rely on Goodman and Bailey and dare them to throw. Hopefully Moore is up to the task as a rookie to provide the run support.

The article was pretty fair

If it was about last season, but its a new year. These teams are a lot different than the teams that squared off last season. It remains to be seen if our run stopping woes will continue. We are much improved at every level of the defense, including the maligned DT position. I know I am sick of hearing about last year’s debacle, and I am sure our defense is too. I think our guys are going to be looking for redemption!

The Raiders will have to pass the ball at some point, and when they do, look out! Its a brand new season and the Raiders are about to figure it out, the hard way!

It seems to be all there:

Orton can do it in the pocket, and he has shown to do it out of the pocket when needed. He is more mobile than Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Drew Brees, and they have been known to do pretty well at the position. So why is everybody all over Orton regarding scrambling? These negative myths have gotten old.

At other positions they have the pass rushers, one of the best left OTs in football, and one of the best pair of CBs in football.

Looks as if iElway’s four most important positions are pretty well covered. Now on to the next level . . ..

You're right.

But there’s a lot of people who wll never let reality get in the way of their desire for Tebow to be the starting quarterback.

That said, and before anyone comes back at me and calls me a hater, I’m not. Anyone who has read my comments would know that. But lately, I’m getting tired of the Tebow-can-do-no-wrong attitudes and sometimes wish the Broncos would try him out at tight end/half back, or just trade him and get the whole thing overwith.

Tebow has the athleticism to become what Elway thinks a QB should be.

Orton does not.

The reality is. If Tebow can’t make the transition, then we don’t have the QB on the roster that Elway wants. Key word. ELWAY WANTS. :) What we want does not matter.

I think (hope) people will be pleasantly surprised

at Orton’s athleticism because he will be playing healthier than he has been in the past two seasons. Hopefully, Orton will be able to stay healthier because of a better front line that will open up the running game and also enable receivers to get down field and open faster, so he can get rid of the ball faster. But hopefully, we’ll never need to know how athletic he really is or isn’t. A lot of hoping, but I can see it happening. As long as everyone else also stays healthy and does their jobs, so Orton can do his.

No, I'm just not completely blinded by homerism.

I can actually look at his quotes and see reality. I don’t bring up obscure stats about how Orton lead the team in rushing first downs at some point during some season. I also don’t talk about Tebow’s one or two drives where he threw from the pocket to score a touchdown either.

Judging by both players body of work, neither fits the mold of what Elway described. If you want to deny that fact, that’s your deal.

I am translating what I know to be true.

If you think Orton can escape pressure regularly then I don’t know what games you are watching – cause they ain’t Broncos games.

Tebow at least can escape pressure and create plays – he just can be consistent from the pocket like Elway obviously wants.

Why is this so hard to accept?

Elway's body language is telling.

He can hardly say Kyle’s name without making a face, like it pains him to mention it. He can hardly say anything good about Tebow, when he does it sounds like he rehearsed it. (he probably did) He never mentions Quinn unless reminded he is on the team.

They tried to trade Orton. They spent 45 days ‘leaking’ the facts that Tebow can’t play, has no support and is the 4th best QB on this team. I’d say neither is Elway’s QBOTF.

He played the last half of 2008 with a high ankle sprain. Take a look at what he did during the first half. He showed decent mobility and athleticism. It is tough to be “athletic,” playing on a high ankle sprain. Trust me.

Why do you not understand what I write?

It seems you respond to my post, never having read them. Did I say Orton has NEVER been healthy and “we” have never seen it? I have seen it. I said you can see it to, if you want to take the trouble to, as I have. As I explained on a very elementary level, you would be able to see in in the first half of 2008. You would be able to see it in his first 11 games last year. As Elway himself stated, and I quote, “Kyle played at a record-shattering, Pro Bowl level last year, and then there were those rib injuries.” I guess he must have seen it, too?

BILLY THOMPSON GOT SHAFTED!!

by AZDynamics on Sep 7, 2011 6:39 PM MDT up reply actions

Zap, ol' buddy, I think you may be reading more into Elway's comments than what he intended . . .

I know it’s awfully hard for you to give Orton any credit. (But I love ya, anyway.) But he is more mobile than you seem to think. I have seen him run out of trouble. I have seen him twist out of a defender’s grasp. (In the final KC game of 2009, he did that twice in the same play!) I have seen him throw on the run. No, Fran Tarkenton, he is not, but he still is more mobile than a lot of people seemingly want to give him credit for.

What Elway wants is a QB who can get the Broncos into the playoffs. Orton played at a Pro Bowl level last year, until his last two games when he had those rib injuries, according to the assessments of many pundits. Elway himself agreed that Orton “played at a record-shattering, Pro Bowl pace,” to which he added, “and then there were those rib injuries.”

I believe Elway is doing what Fox is doing: Seeing what happens. If Orton plays lights-out, and the Broncos go 8-8 or better, then you just might see a new contract in effect for him. And, as well as he played last year with virtually no TEs or running game and an O-line that blew, don’t be surprised if he does, now that he has a running game and TEs, and a better O-line.

Most of thios crap comes from three sources: 1, those who were butthurt because Cutler was traded: 2, Orton was a “McD” man;3, TT slobbers who just think that TT is the “Bestest Evah”, and just want Orton to step aside for their boy, regardless….

My only criticism of Orton is the lack of mobility and for that I trust my own two eyes. Know what?

When Ipplayed ball, and I had a busted play and covered the ball, I pulled my legs up and cuerved my body around the ball. Know why? Because when the guys jumped on me, I protected my legs by bringing them up. and I protexted my ribs and other vital parts by curveing around the ball. Also, the other guys couldn’t pull the ball away from me. Coaches insisted on that. You call that the fetal position.

But, hey! You see with your own eyes, right? Ever play ball with several D guys coming down on you? But Hey. You see it with your own eyes, right? Ever thought to think, good buddy?

It explains why all those teams offered us first round draft choices for Orton, right? It explains all the teams wanting to sign him to Kevin Kolb numbers right? Have you forgotten there was not a single team willing to give a second round draft choice to the guy or pay him? The only team interested in him wanted him to take a pay cut and was not willing to choke up a second round draft choice. They stuck with Henne for goodness sakes. They are rumors they are open to Favre returning, but they did not want Orton enough to pay him and give up a second round pick. But I am sure all those GMs either were butthurt over Cutler, mad at Orton because he was a McD man or who have serious crushes on TT. That is why they did not part with the draft picks and dollars to obtain his services, right?

It was the Brady comment that got me

Brady isn’t a runner, but his 6th sense of when to slide in the pocket is maddening. Also, Brady doesn’t lose any accuracy or velocity when throwing on the move. Orton’s drops by about half.

Mediocrity is like a lollipop: lick it once and you'll suck forever.

Sticking with Kyle Orton is like taking your cousin to the Homecoming Dance - you're openly admitting that you had no other options, and it's guaranteed that nothing is happening after the early dance.

by improv88 on Sep 7, 2011 12:47 PM MDT up reply actions

Alright, let's do this right now

Brady and Manning are absolute masters at avoiding sacks.

For a good example actually, check out the sacks for the Patriots record-breaking 2007 season with Brady. Brady got sacked 21 times.

The very next year with Matt Cassel at QB, the same o-line and offense and everything, Cassel was sacked 47(!!!) times, one of worst in the league.

So Cassel got sacked WAY more. let’s look at rushing yards

Brady ran 4 times for 12 yards. That’s honestly it.
Cassell ran 73 times for 270 yards. Way more.

But you tell me. Which guy is actually more mobile? The guy who got some rushing yards but couldn’t avoid sacks to save his life, or the guy who runs once a month but has masterful pocket awareness? This is the confusion over “mobility” some of you guys are having right now. Just because Orton got more rushing yards than Tom Brady last year does NOT mean Orton is more mobile. It just means he ran more times than Brady.

True, although you can also avoid sacks with your arm. Brady & Manning see and can hit windows about 1/4 the size of other QBs, so to them someone is always “open.”

Okay, asinsoin, we'll throw out Brees . . .

It’s true Orton may not be more mobile than Brees, but he is at least as mobile. Perhaps you haven’t seen Orton outrun linebackers around the flank, but I have.

Anyway, that still leaves Manning and Brady, and I forgot about Rivers. Orton is more mobile than all three of them. Now, I expect people to jump on this and start bringing out the myths involving other areas of Orton’s game. But the issue here is mobility, nothing else.

Orton played much of his career on high ankle sprains: half of 2008 and all of 2009. Guess what? You don’t have mobility when playing on high ankle sprains. Last year, 2010, commentators were talking about Orton’s “surprising mobility.” He is not the statue that some of his haters would have us to believe. He does have the ability to extend a play. I know because I’ve seen him do it.

I think we had this same conversation last year AZ

And no I have not seen KO outrun a LB around the flank but I digress. I have no issue with KO’s mobility, I’m only concerned about winning games and specific to the QB; 3rd down conversions, red zone conversions and 4th quarter efficiency. He can be the freaking statue of liberty as far as I’m concerned as long as he puts points on the board when it counts and wins games.

I don't believe you and I have ever had this discussion . . .

Not here, anyway. I don’t believe I have ever talked about Kyle’s mobility on this site.

Anyway, you seem misguided on 3rd downs and red zones, too. The QB bears great responsibility in those situations, but they are not specific to the QB. Many other factors go into it, such as the running game, the presence of TEs, the play of the offensive line, and the quality of the defense. While people have tried to lay that all on Orton’s lap, that has amounted to shallow thinking. (Please don’t take offense: I’m not referring to intelligence here, but the propensity for overlooking all the factors.) It is just too simplistic to say those situations are specific to the QB.

BILLY THOMPSON GOT SHAFTED!!

Well Ok then AZ in addition to losing my memory, being misguided and a shallow thinker let's add just doesn't understand the game of football.

Condescension noted: this however falls into the classic definition of a strawman argument. I never at any point said ALL responsibility for red zone conversions, 3rd down conversions and 4th quarter efficiency is the QB’s responsibility. I am however making the point (and please pay close attention here so we can avoid all the back and forth) that over the last 2 years KO has demonstrated a consistent pattern of failing to produce in each situation relative to his own norms as well as other NFL QB’s. I do not have the stats at my immediate disposal but I do remember numerous posts here that illustrated how KO’s performance on 3rd downs, the 4th quarter and the red zone were both less than his own average and well below average for other NFL QB’s. I completely understand the bad Oline and the no running game arguments however those arguments are invalid in the context of his own performance in different situations. Let’s leave it there AZ , and I won’t imply that you’re misguided, shallow or stupid if you either refuse to see it or don’t get it.

FTR..your reply didn't offend me

It was more amusing than anything else in it’s inability to address the context of the conversation. As a Bronco fan I’m pulling for KO to overcome his past demons in regards to producing when and where it matters most. However I’m not willing to act like it doesn’t exist until he proves he’s developed that ability. As stated above I could care less how mobile he is as longs as he makes plays.

Orton is NOT more mobile than those guys

Seriously, this is ludicrous. Mobility is NOT equal to rushing yards – even remotely. There are about 4-5 QB’s in the entire NFL who are real running threats who rush for real yards – Vick, Roethlisberger, Rodgers, and.. maybe a couple others I’m forgetting.

Mobility in the pocket is what’s far, far more important. Manning is one of the best in the game at this. Watch him. He has masterful footwork, and his ability to sense and avoid pressure is elite. Orton’s is below average – better than a guy like Cassel, but not by a lot.

There is a very real temptation

to think “we are only one or two players away”.Michael Jordan certainly made Scotty Pippen and Dennis Rodman better players and I know I was one who thought Dewayne Robertson was a player who could gobble all of the blockers and make our smaller, faster Linebackers more effective at stopping the run, which had been our achilllies heel for far too long. Given the parity in the NFL today, that temptation is very real and I think Legwold is saying we are committed to avoiding the siren’s song.I think that says a lot.

So much for all the "Blind side OT isn't significant" BS that we've been fed here!! Elway disagrees too.

3. Left offensive tackle

"He protects the most important player’s blindside. You can’t play if the guys you can’t see coming keep hitting you. He has to be athletic, smart and tough, and you hope he’s there a long time."

"The stupider one is, the closer one is to reality. The stupider one is, the clearer one is. Stupidity is brief and artless, while intelligence wriggles and hides itself.
- Fyodor D

by Whidbey Bronco on Sep 7, 2011 9:59 AM MDT reply actions

I still think blindside OT is mostly insignificant

Note he said Left Tackle, not “blind side” tackle…. so there is something there for both camps. Yes the LT typically protects the blindside, but that is a statement of fact, and indeed if you have a bad pass-protecting LT who can’t handle being “uncovered”, your QB is gonna take a lot of punishment…. that is why he has to be “athletic, smart and tough”.

The more important part in defining the position is however still the weak/strong orientation and ability to operate on the edge of the line without a TE chipping…. you don’t switch your Left/Right tackels for a lefty QB, even though that switches the “blindside”.

by cjfarls on Sep 7, 2011 11:32 AM MDT up reply actions

I've heard it all OVER and OVER thanks but get your facts straight.

did you even read the post or my quote from it? Maybe if I blockquote it

3. Left offensive tackle
"He protects the most important player’s blindside. You can’t play if the guys you can’t see coming keep hitting you. He has to be athletic, smart and tough, and you hope he’s there a long time."

Without getting too into it… I think the very rare cases of long starting Lefties are a pretty small sample size (with existing Olines – Young/Boomer). In my opinion a team WOULD focus on the right tackle if they were building a line around a Lefty they expected to have around for awhile.

"The stupider one is, the closer one is to reality. The stupider one is, the clearer one is. Stupidity is brief and artless, while intelligence wriggles and hides itself.
- Fyodor D

by Whidbey Bronco on Sep 7, 2011 12:02 PM MDT up reply actions

hasn't ever happened in those rare cases before

why would it happen now? You say there is little evidence they wouldn’t shift, but that limited evidence is INFINITELY greater than the evidence they would…. it simply has NEVER happened.

It just doesn’t make any sense… the reason LTs need quick feet is because they are on an island at the edge of the line much of the time. The emergence of balanced 2 TE sets may mitigate that need a bit, but single TE sets are still the norm, and the majority of runs still go strongside…

QB Blindside may have some small part to why LT passblocking is key (it is not good getting your QB speared in the back), but fundamentally there is an absolute athletic reason why the LT has to be different than the typical RT… logically the lack of a TE keeping the dline in front of them makes so much more sense. RTs can be slower footed maulers because they typically are blocking guys directly in front of them, or who are chipped inside by the TE as they release… the RTs fundamentally don’t have the same need to fan speedy edge-rushers wide… because the TE keeps them inside.

by cjfarls on Sep 7, 2011 2:33 PM MDT up reply actions

despite what Elway said.

It DOES make sense and I really don’t need the same argument over and over with no thought of the opposing point of view!
It Simply has never happened so it never will? THAT doesn’t make sense at all.
When has a line been built around a lefty?

Folks outside of MHR have discussed blindside protection for years and now Elway chimes in with the same POV.

It is a factor.

"The stupider one is, the closer one is to reality. The stupider one is, the clearer one is. Stupidity is brief and artless, while intelligence wriggles and hides itself.

by Whidbey Bronco on Sep 7, 2011 2:51 PM MDT up reply actions

Elway also said LEFT tackle

so as I said, both sides get some credance.

It may be a a minor factor… but it doesn’t make sense as a MAJOR factor based on the required skills for the players, and no team has ever schemed/shown it to be a major driver of decision-making/roster construction… every lefty QB in the history of the game has had a tradionally built oline.

Words mean less than actions.

by cjfarls on Sep 7, 2011 2:55 PM MDT up reply actions

now that doesn't match what anyone has ever said, and defintiely not what Elway said

Sure, you don’t want a bum on either side… but the RT skillset is much less demanding than the LT in terms of pass-protection, because they have TE help…. there is a reason LTs get paid the big bucks, and it is likely not because QBs are left/right handed.

Now that said, a good run-mauler at RT, and/or a RT that is good enough in pass-pro that you can isolate him and run 4-wide often or motion the TE is a big help for sure.

by cjfarls on Sep 7, 2011 3:06 PM MDT up reply actions

a PRE-EXISTING built line!!

The only one I’m not sure about is Stabler. The rest played behind Montana’s line (though young’s right tackle was paid I believe more than his left… I’m looking for the link)

haha here’s a good one.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/466822-winston-justice-not-vick-will-be-eagles-key-player

I guess a few more folks agree that the Right Tackle becomes more important with a lefty…

Just so you know, I get the traditional one TE set argument… I just disagree that this makes the blindside argument null. Put the damn TE wherever you want! Run two. What ever. But cover my QB’s blindside with talent please?

"The stupider one is, the closer one is to reality. The stupider one is, the clearer one is. Stupidity is brief and artless, while intelligence wriggles and hides itself.

by Whidbey Bronco on Sep 7, 2011 5:47 PM MDT up reply actions

this is the same argument as bfree2bronc

Of course you want good talent on the right side… who ever said you didn’t? Getting your QB killed from either side is not a good thing.

No team has ever switched their strong/weak oline orientation due to QB handedness, and there is no evidence they ever will beyond pure speculation… to me it seems too much other stuff (RB orientations, safety reads, etc.) would have to change too. Maybe with the emergence of more “balanced” sets (2 TE, 4 wide, etc.), and more tricky defenses moving players around to isolate blocking schemes that could change (e.g. Pittsburgh’s “11 angry men” defense, where they play zero downlineman in some pass situations), but I’ll believe it when I see it.

Teams want a RT that can passblock for any QB, and sure, maybe it becomes marginally more important if the QB is a lefty because they can’t see the end coming… but the skillset for the RT in passblocking is still likely to be different than for LT due to the island nature of the weakside, and therefore LT is still in all likelihood going to be where you put your quickest footed tackle. If you have 2 guys that can both do it, great (because now you ahve more flexibility for balanced sets, etc.), but at minimum the weakside tackle has to be able to perform on an island… the strongside does not as much.

If anything, the lefty QB makes LT less important, rather than RT more important. At the LT, you have the confluence of the “island” blocking, along with the backside of the QB that makes it such a tough position to fill (and consequencely, why the really good guys are the 2nd highest paid position on the field)… if you have a lefty QB, maybe you can instead skimp a little on the OT position group, because your QB can see the rush in front of him, and the backside has TE support…. I can buy that argument much more than having to move your LT, or get an LT-somatype to play the right side.

by cjfarls on Sep 8, 2011 12:31 PM MDT up reply actions

Whidbey - one thing to remember

Teams often line up their best pass rusher on the side opposite the LT. Putting your best pass blocker against the pass rusher is just as big a factor (if not bigger) than protecting the blindside.

Just FWIW.

McBean has the experience over Unrein...

We haven’t see a whole lot of Mitch and his skillset but I would venture that McBean is miles ahead of him. This may be Ryan’s year to make a breakout with the talent around him pushing him…Sometimes that’s what it takes.

I think Peyton Manning's career is in jeopardy because of his neck issues

and the Colts are going to be the surprise team of the year (in a BAD way).

Don't underestimate the rest of the talent on that team. Without Manning they won't be able to win the SB probably but underestimate them at your peril.

I hope Manning is going to be OK – I hate seeing any talented player been forced out of the league by injury.

Anyway I’m looking forward to seeing him meet VonDoom in the playoffs soon and we can revenge the 2004/05 loss in the right way!

we’ll need our pass rush to be A grade and we can beat them if it comes to that, crazier things have happened!

It happened to Sterling Sharpe and his neck injury, and

there is a great possibility that Peyton could be paralyzed with a big hit. I don’t think Peyton would want to face our boys any time soon. He may find himself lifeless laying on the field, and that would be good for anybody…

The QB discussion/nonsense just never stops!

This is the latest thread that the TT fans are hanging on to:
“"Far and away the most important position," Elway said. "You need the guy to win you a championship from the pocket, to be a leader, to make it go. And you’re looking for the athlete at the position who can operate from the pocket and get out when he needs to."
If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it 2000 times on MHR..Kyle Orton has equal or better mobility that Manning, Brady, Marino, Warner, Unitas, Starr, Montanna, and many other great NFL QBs. Noboby knows this better than John Elway. If Orton plays well and the team wins in 2011, then his contract will be extended. The Broncos have much bigger fish to fry than the position of QB.

by rocko1 on Sep 7, 2011 2:16 PM MDT reply actions

Yes Rocko, you have indeed said it at least 2000 times.

Rather than taunting the TT fans you seem so intent upon taunting why not just move on yourself and stop doing the same thing you accuse them of doing. Try to remember Rocko there’s an entire season to play , don’t get too far ahead of yourself my man.

oh...

And most of those guys you mentioned (Manning, Brady, Marino, Warner, Unitas, Starr, Montanna). TT had a better three game start than they did. It funny to me that all of those who said it would take Timmy 3 years to get acclimated to the NFL are ready to cast him aside after three games.

Tebow will win championships. I hope it’s with the Broncos.

I said be honest! KO just as mobile as any that I listed.

All had to develop techniques to avoid a sack obviously. Manning is the least mobile..then probably Marino. Ko is around the middle with Montanna being the most agile. All of them played on great teams with vastly superior OLs, good/great running games, most played with very good TEs, and all threw to great WRs. All of their teams had superior if not great defenses. All of the QBs had great HCs. That my friend is the context behind these great players. It truely is a team sport.

You are absolutely right, Rocko, and I have seen them all, clear back to and beyond Starr . . .

But you’re not going to persuade anybody. Even when you lay out facts, they will argue with them. If they want to consider Orton a bum, that is what they’re going to do. They have argued against his arm, his accuracy, his mobility, his leadership, even his personality . . . to them, he has no good points. I can just see Orton’s reaction when he sees, “Why do so many people hate Tebow?” He’s probably thnking, “Are you kidding me?”

Xanders waiver interview

…was interesting. I noted the focus on the best 53 “for beating the Raiders”, not for the season overall… I think the dinged up DTs had a big impact on who we kept initially…

No FA DT would likely be able to step in immediately as quality, and we need 4 guys to rotate… Vick, McBean, Unrein and Ayers (which then required keeping Harvey on the edge)… you hope Thomas/Bunkley can play week 1, but until they do, the Mcbean/Unrein keeper makes a lot more sense….

I’m even more firmly convinced that once Thomas/Bunkley get healthy, McBean and/or Unrein likely get cut in favor of someone else… if Jarmon isn’t claimed, I could even see him comng back (since Bunkley and Thomas can both provide 1-tech depth, which Jarmon couldn’t), or something totally different like DB/RB/WR, etc.

The need to devote so many slots to DT due to injury (6 is a lot for a 4-3 team) I could easily see as being what is keeping us from brining in RB depth to challenge Ball (can’t go for a new guy because you need 3 in case of injury), etc. Similarly once DJ gets healthy, if all the other LBs are still good to go Muhamed may meet the Turk.

As a week-to-week process, I can easily see us pairing that DT number down in favor of other positions where folks might not be on the 46-man active list anyway… we may just have to wait a week or 2 for folks to get healthy.

by cjfarls on Sep 7, 2011 3:44 PM MDT reply actions

Nice, I didn't notice that Raiders bit. I like that. (I really want to like Xanders)

Good point on the week to week thing… with the shortened offseason, this becomes that much more important.
Totally agreed on why we kept Ball as well.

Muhamed?
I hope he isn’t needed!

Thanks Tim

I can easily see that Orton is way more mobile than Tebow. How is that hard to miss?

What is there to debate? LoL, totally kidding. I think next Monday, it’s going to feel like F.O.R.E.V.E…….R. before 9 o’ clock arrives (Central time zone anyway)….

I’d like to submit a request that Kyle Orton and Tim Tebow join MHR and be required to post a weekly comment. Seriously though, that would be cool to have a player come on and potentially give at least a bit of a crap about what We are saying. Kinda like being a ‘fan’ of Eddie Royal on Facebook, but one of them joining here, just to comment time to time would be AWESOME. I could see Rahim Moore do it. Anyone want to shoot him a request on twitter? I would if I was a twitterpater… Or whatever you call a connoisseur of that which is referred to as twitter.

Nobody said Orton is more mobile than Tebow . . .

That kind of sarcasm is not necessary and is out of line, IMO. All some of us have tried to do is to show that Orton is more mobile than some conceive. It is amazing that this will draw such opposition and even ridicule, but that’s the way it is when communicating with people who hate Orton as much as they do . . .

You guys are missing it in Elways comments

What he really is trying to say is he would like Orton & Tebow to mate & their offspring to play QB, hes just really good at succession planning.

Elway: Well you Kyle can run the offense and are safe & smart & you Tim are fast and mobile and have big play ability what I need you two do next is in the best interest of the team…

Elway: No not you Brady pants back on, sorry we don’t need to breed good looks into our QB’s it not a requirement just ask Peyton & Eli..

Unbelievable

We are less then a week away from facing the Raiders in prime time on Monday Night Football and everyone is at each others throats because Elway gave a description of a quarterback that he is looking for?

That is unbelievable to me. I’ve been in many QB battles, but I hate the Raiders so much all I can think about is how many times the Legion of Doom are going to flatten Jason Campbell.

Kyle Orton is the starting QB this year. That is all I need to know.

It’s Raiders week. This is serious business. No time for QB flame wars. At least not for me.

And here’s to Al Davis having a long, long, long life as the owner of the hated Raiders.
