Going into the last game of the REGULAR season, I have a few thoughts and ideas and fears I would like to share and hopefully the Broncos will alleviate some of those fears and show some of the ideas.
We have got to start trying to convert 3rd downs. I dont have stats to back this up but, most of our late game heroics have very few 3rd downs in them. WE HAVE (yes I am yelling) to stop running QB draw on 3rd and long and try the 8 yard outs and hitchs and swings. If we really have 1 area that has caused most of our problems, it is 3rd down. We have got to be creative, start doing roll out passes. We either throw it deep or QB draw. nothing in between.
On D, we have got to get some depth on pass plays from our MLB. Teams are killing us over the middle where a LB should be sitting waiting to take someone's head off. Our safeties are young now and we have no one at this point to control the tempo by coming up with bone jarring hits that cause incomplete passes. To me, we need a REAL MLB and a #2 CB before we would ever think about getting a 2nd string QB on this team.
Coaching has been bold I give you that. Changing to an offense that plays to our QB's strength took major steel balls. Our D has been much better but still has a long way to go as I mentioned in the last paragraph. But, there is always a but isnt there. We have got to stay aggressive on D. That is when we have been our best. We do not have the studs to just sit back and play. KEEP up the pressure. Quit moving Miller to DE and use him as a 5th rusher. More CB blitzes. Willhite is not a very good cover guy so send him early and often. He has done a nice job with that. Most of all Fox needs to stop with the stupid calls and take a few more chances. NO challenges as soon as the play is over, going for it on 4th and less than 1 from midfield in and use the QB sneak with our FB QB. Also use Larsen more. He has done great things with the ball all year but has not had near enough touches out of the backfield as a receiver or runs on 2nd and 3rd and short.
Well I am hoping we dont get too jacked up today to beat Orton. There is a lot of pressure on this team regarless of what they try to say about it because of the choice of letting Orton go. These games have not been kind to Denver in the past and I am hoping we break out of those type of things today.
