Ask BTSC - Playoff Edition

So the 12-4 Pittsburgh Steelers will travel to play the 8-8 Denver Broncos in teh AFC Wildcard round on Sunday at 4:30 EST on CBS. I am a resident member at the Steelers blog, Behind the Steel Curtain and write for Mocking the Draft. As you all know this is a huge game and one I am looking forward to. Hopefully we can use this thread to answer questions about each others teams and avoid it becoming a thread for just attacking each other. I would appreciate it (and so would all of BTSC) if you could avoid Big Ben rape jokes, James Harrison being a wifebeater jokes, and any other dumb, stereotypical stupid garbage. If you don't mind, I will get the thread started off with a few questions for you guys:

1. What do you think of Tim Tebow? Do you think he is your franchise QB or just a fad that is rapidly dying down?

2. How big of a loss will the OL that went down today be?

3. Is your running game successful because of scheme or the RBs?

4. Do you use a zone blocking scheme? Do your OL frequently chop block on running plays?

5. What are your predictions for the game?

I will be here all week and im sure some other folks from BTSC will stop by throughout the week.

hi j-man

Ben is fairly immobile these days. Without a running game to keep the defence honest, I worry for his health and his ability to make those big plays.

Hello seton hall and steelers

Thank you for posting. In response to your questions.

1) I think Tim can be a long term answer. He needs to hire a personal trainer to work on throws such as the out routes and the like.

2) I think it will be pretty big. Hopefully there will not be much of a drop off.

3) I think Tebow is one of the main reasons. Since he is like a 2nd running back that the defense has to account for. Hopefully the Steelers defense is concerned to to point that they do not make quick decisions.

4) The true chop-blocks would be called by the refs. They will run something similar to the zone blocking the Broncos have been running for awhile now.

5) The amount of pressure the defense can give to Ben will be a deciding factor. If the Broncos can bring the pressure it will be a low scoring game 17-14. It would be within 7 point. It will be a long day if there isn’t sufficient pressure.

Hello Seton Hall

I am guessing that many teams in the NFL run zone blocking. It is similar to what the Broncos ran when Gibbs was running the offense blocking scheme in 1997. Teams will continue to run it as long as it remains legal. The Broncos now have some “wrinkles” in the zone blocking with such things as the option.

Welcome to MHR!

This is just my opinion
1. I love Tim and what he can do but he’s been off his game for the past few games, hopefully he comes out strong against you guys

2. I think Kuper broke his ankle(can someone clarify) I think it hurts a lot. The 5 starting lineman played every game together this year, it def doesn’t help

3. I would say its successful because of Tebow plus McGahee, when Ball is in there the production drops off substantially I’d say. Still does good but it’s not the same when McGahee doesn’t play

4. It’s pretty much zbs I think

5. The team misses the presence of Dawkins and Millers play has dropped off substantially with his injured hand. I’m very hopeful the Broncos get out of their slump and have a fire lit under their butts and play fired up. I’m glad they made it considering what it’s been like to be a Broncos fan for these past few years. I think if they find the it factor again they could pull off an upset. In my world anyways lol

Hello.

1. Tebow doesn’t have the NFL passing game down. I hope he gets there this offseason.
2. Kuper was our best OL this year. He will be missed, yeah.
3. It pretty much only works with McGahee.
4. No worse than any other team. You’re thinking of the old days when we had a bad rep for it.
5. A win.

The best of the 2011-2012 season is yet to come.

by Digger24 on Jan 1, 2012 10:24 PM MST reply actions

Welcome here to MHR, here are my thoughts

1) Tebow had his absolute worst game as a professional today in a game we should have won. He’s playing scared right now——he’s afraid of making mistakes and in consequence, he is compounding his already well known issues. I like the guy personally, but he has a lot of improvement to make—-simply put games like he had today just don’t cut it for me. The bright side is everyone has bad games, the downside is that he had a bad game trying not to lose the game, not trying to win it.

2) Kuper is probably the most consistent guy blocking on our O-line. He has played well against guys like Suh. Running to his side in tandem with Orlando Franklin has been where we have had the most success. Losing a guy that is a leader like that will hurt greatly. I expect the Steelers D to do a lot of A gap blitzes (Kuper is RG) and stunts to exploit our backups, hopefully our guys step up their game.

3) It’s a bit of both. Some of our longest runs have come from the “zone read” plays and Tebow’s ability to run definitely gives our RB’s more lanes to run through. However, McGahee is a tough back that often breaks tackles and gains some more yards on plays where he should be stuffed. He doesn’t have breakaway speed, but he’s tough and if he’s in the open field he can make people miss. Lance Ball is a rotational guy that also runs well, though he also gets stuffed for losses more running sideline to sideline. Jeremiah Johnson, another rotational guy had two touches today and shows flashes of speed and sideline to sideline running that can give over-aggressive defenses fits—-he just isn’t used that often.

4) Our scheme mixes it up, but yes we use the zone blocking as well as a lot of guard pulls and things that are more tailored for lateral movement. Our line has shown the ability to push lesser D-lines around, but struggles with better D-lines, Detroit, NYJ games come to mind, those teams played us very stout. We do utilize power running schemes, but like I said, it isn’t one of our strengths.

5) Going into this scenario, I wanted Pittsburgh the most for fan reasons——I have had it in for you guys ever since the 2005 AFC Championship and the fact that a home game here a few years ago had WAY too many Pittsburgh fans. But I don’t know that we match up well with Pittsburgh. Our secondary, even with the solid play of Champ Bailey and UFA rookie Chris Harris as our nickleback is vulnerable mainly because we have a rookie safety in Quinton Carter playing, and David Bruton who has mostly been a special teamer (Both had solid games today though and made plays). Andre Goodman played well today, but does get burned badly sometimes. Your WR’s are fantastic and I think they can give us some problems. We play the run well, so defensively its on your WR’s and Ben to make plays. That worries me as well because Ben can scramble and make plays—-we’ve given up a lot of big QB scrambles this year. Offensively, we simply aren’t consistent enough to move the ball on a regular basis, and besides Tebow’s bad play lately, we have suspect playcalling and WR’s that have had issues with drops.

Ben is hobbled and so is Mendenhall. Our defense played very well today so all I’ll say is if we keep it close we got a shot. Best case scenario (forgive me I’m still stinging from the loss earlier playoffs aside) Broncos 14 Steelers 13

Books are good...

…and on blog sites, don’t waste paper!.

Thanks for you answers, with detail; helps non-Bronco fan such as myself understand your team better.

Question for you; is there any rumblings, rumors, thoughts, that Tebow needs maybe a PR guy to help control his image. From the outside, a lot of the “Tebow hate” comes from the perception, as perpetrated by the media, that he pushes his religion. I personally don’t see it, but as with any young man his age, it would be easy to get caught up in all the media attention and inadvertantly allow his image, his persona, to be hijacked by others wanting it to further their own agenda.

Just a thought.

Tebow is not shy about his religion, he puts it out there a lot.

Some people like it, some people don’t. The people that don’t like it tend to be the loudest though.

With what he says and does though, he is already pretty well trained and doesn’t say anything to “rock the boat”

What are the strengths of your WR's?

Speed, size, hands, etc? I know you all are a lot more pass-happy than you used to be. I’m wondering how our secondary will scout you all

by yibberat on Jan 4, 2012 4:05 PM MST up reply actions

Wallace, speed…I’ve actually sort of been losing faith in him. It seems sometimes that if the ball don’t land directly in his hands, he can’t be bothered to go for it.
Brown, Deceptive speed, and pretty damn good route running, and excellent hands in my opinion.
Can’t say much about Sanders, we really haven’t seen much of him this season

Crotchety, I mean Cotchery. I personally love this pick up, he has stepped up when called upon, but I couldn’t tell you exactly what his strengths are

Miller…unfortunately, due to the OL situation, he is forced to stay home and block a lot more than usual.

Saunders…he might surprise you. This guy has star written all over him, but he’s a rookie and hasn’t been used much. He’s a huge tight end with WR type skills (body control, hands, etc)

Ben definitely isn't mobile

and the Steelers are running out of healthy RBs which means your pass rushers will pin their ears back and charge hard. Unless Ben does a lot of quick release short passes, early and often, he will be in for a lot of hurting (okay, maybe even moire hurting because he is beat up already).

Starks did pretty well against Dumervil last time they met. Not too crazy worried about that matchup….and with Miller’s bum hand, not too worried about that side either. Gilbert has also progressed nicely at RT for us this year. I’m hoping/thinking Ben will get a decent amount of time to throw this week.

Another fan's answers to your questions

1. Tebow is young and makes rookie mistakes. I’m fine with where he’s at at this point in his career. He’s never had an offseason as a starting quarterback and I expect that to do worlds for him, especially with Elway helping him along. If he fails to improve in the next year or two though, I’ll be ready to move on. But until it comes to that point, I have full faith, belief and support in him and don’t expect him to fail.

2. I dropped to my knees when Kuper got injured. The guy is the epitome of an offensive lineman: Unrecognized by most yet very key to our victories. We seemed to do ok after he went out, but I’m afraid what a team can do when they have a week to plan for that chink in our armor.

3. It’s a good mix, but I’d lean more to scheme. You always have to watch the edge with us even when we push it down the middle a vast majority of the time. It wears down great defenses and we’ll switch it up when you’re tired and getting lazy.

4. We’re back to the good old zone blocking. One of the biggest improvements since McD left.

5. I see us coming into this game with a fire that the Steelers won’t expect. We have a lot to prove and nothing to lose. With your injuries and the passion I’m expecting, I’m thinking a lot of your fans will walk away shaking their heads wondering where it came from. Of course, if we continue this attitude of playing not to lose that we’ve had the past few games, it could get ugly fast.

I guess we could try burying the hatchet……again. I just don’t wanna argue and it seems that you and I tend to end up arguing when we get in conversations. I have learned in life that it is best to avoid the people whom I have that problem with.

Some peoples personalities just don’t mix well with each other. Nothing wrong with either person, its just seems like it works that way with some people.

I am not mad at you, I don’t dislike you, I don’t think you are a bad person, I just feel like we don’t mix well together.

by steeler fever on Jan 4, 2012 10:43 PM MST up reply actions

While I agree with what you say to a point, I, myself have learned, that sometimes it’s a good thing to interact with people you feel you don’t mix with. Debates are good, otherwise you’re always “preaching to the choir” and that is boring. If you feel strongly about what you’re saying, fine, but you can’t get all bent out of shape if someone doesn’t agree, and want’s to debate it. Especially when you put your point in a public forum like BTSC (or whatever)
Sometimes, the debates can get heated, and that’s ok too, as long as both are mature enough to let it go soon after.
This is out of experience by the way. I too thought it was best to just avoid people the same way. I don’t think it is anymore though. If I kept my circle down to people who always agreed with everything I say…my circle would be a straight line.

My answers

1. Tebow is a raw lefty QB. He’s already shown that he can do a lot himself when the game is close. But it will be impossible to judge whether he can be an NFL QB until the Broncos make the offseason adjustments nec for him. If they don’t, he will likely find another team that does. re his mechanics/etc — I look at it this way. If it is possible to improve his mechanics from where they are to where they need to be; then Tebow has the work ethic and drive to make it happen and more of both than most any other player. If its impossible, then its impossible.

2. Kuper is a big loss. He’s the veteran anchor over on the running side and is very underrated at an invisible position. And our O-line depth was basically non-existent before he went down. We were really lucky to have no injuries at all there up to then. Now we’re not lucky anymore.

3. Personally, I think the running game is successful because of the scheme. McGahee has benefited because he is durable – unlike Moreno.

4. I’d take the under on the over/under. Realistically, Steelers should win. #2 team last year v #2 draft pick last year? Get real. But that’s why they play the game. And I do suspect that the Broncos are going to come into the game with a bit more fire in their belly given the contempt that all the poobahs are showing us.

I expect fairly close game as well

The offence hasn’t been lighting it up like they should due to all the injuries. The defence is good but will get tired if the offence can’t manage some ball control.

You don't have KD in the USA?

Seriously? I thought Kraft was an American company.

I have another funny one link that I came across today but it is too political for me to put on a SBNation site.

Kraft Mac and Cheese

There is (or was) Kraft Mac and Cheese as well that comes with canned cheese sauce. It was fairly grim but much more expensive than the KD which had powdered cheese sauce.

But only if your QB promises...

…to pass a lot, and aim for the guy in the white jersey with all the hair.

Naah

I think he’ll aim for the hairdo with a run. That’s what – a 50 lb mismatch? Not even TP’s hair weighs that much.

lol

There was a 80 lb mismatch between my kid and one of the other o-linemen in a skills camp this week. I realized some of the DBs were heavier than my kid. He really needs to eat more.

Hey seton hall, welcome...

If you were John Fox, our head coach, gameplaning to beat the Steelers… how would you do it on both sides of the ball?
