Around SBN: L'Equipe Claims He's Coming To Chelsea On Five Year Deal

Which Comes First the Offense or the Defense? Chicken or the Egg

Hopefully most fans feel good about the O Line and don't feel it needs fixing. Denver could use acouple of good backup O Line guys that probably can be acquired either late in the draft or picked up through free agency. .

It gets a lot trickier from there.

1. Do the Broncos stick with Tebow? While he is popular, he is a high stakes gamble. So much of Tebow's game has to improve, there's no way to know where he will be in two years. Maybe his passing won't get any better--can the Broncos survive with a QB who can't consistently complete passes? True he needs better receivers, which would help, but Denver won't get passed the 2nd round of the playoffs without a strong offense that has both a running and passing game. If Denver decides not to go with Tebow, how do they get another quality QB? Making the playoffs means a low draft choice!

2. If Tebow is the QB of the future, what comes first fixing the so, so defense or getting more 5 yds a carry RB's and WR's that can catch wiffle balls consistently.

3. I haven't given the Broncos defense much credit all year long. And it looked like the Broncos defense didn't show up at all to play in the NE game. Do the Broncos add to the bright spots on the defense through the draft or through free agency? The pass coverage and D line has to get better--pass coverage first.

4. On offense running backs and receivers don't come cheap or easy. If Denver is going to be a running team, then they'll need high quality durable backs at least 3 or 4 deep.

5 For receivers, Denver needs guys who can get open quicker and who can catch the hard to hang on to wiffle balls thrown by Tebow. How many of those come up in the draft or in free agency that don't cost more than Denver can afford?

So what comes first. Do the Broncos improve on the D at the expense of improving the running back core and wiffle ball magnet receivers, or do they try to help each a little?

This is where a coaching staff earns it's money. Pick right--the Broncos go back to the playoffs next year. Pick wrong and they could wind up being a "just missed it" team.

The O-line does need a big fix

and I’m not sure how you can watch the Pats game without seeing that. That game was the first one where Tebow was being asked to 3 step drop into a conventional pocket for dink and dunk passes. The only way to get TE’s into the passing game – which was necessary because our WR’s were injured. And the Pats were the first team in a few weeks to play a conventional defense – rushing the QB – rather than sitting in the box and forcing Tebow to win by passing the ball.

Which meant the O-line was for the first time being asked to defend a pass rush and provide a pocket on their own. They failed. No surprise that Hochstein failed. He’s a career backup and certainly has no upside at this point. Franklin was a bigger failure. He is not a blindside pass protect tackle and was never projected as that. His pass protection so far this year was helped a lot by Kuper on one side and a perma-blocking TE on the other. But this game showed he is a run masher not a pass blocker. He’s a great guard – and a tackle when we are running. But he is not and will never be a pass protect tackle.

And if we are ever going to get the TE on that side involved in the passing game, and protect Tebow’s blindside, we are going to need to get a LT type player and slot them in a RT.

Franklin’s a great player – and there are plenty of places to play him on the o-line. But if he is our main RT next year, then Tebow’s career in Denver will end in 2012. And it won’t matter how much he improves this offseason. No QB in the league could have played well yesterday with the protection our o-line provided – and the Pats are not a great pass rushing team even if they played out of their minds yesterday.

However he's used, I think sigining Ryan Harris after Kupe got hurt is a positive step

only if we keep him.

and if he can play

0 games in 2011, 10 games in 2010, 8 games in 2009. That’s a 50% solution at best.

There are a lot of things to fix

But there are a lot of guys in the draft would could help:

1st round = Lamar Miller, RB, Miami
2nd round = Alameda Ta’amu, DT, Washington
3rd round = Casey Hayward, CB, Vanderbilt
4th round = Mitchell Schwartz, RT, California
5th round = Emmanuel Acho, ILB, Texas
5th round = Chandler Harnish, QB, Northern Illinois
7th round = Rashard Matthews, WR, Penn State

I'd like to see this draft happening

But my 1-4 rounds whould be: Dennard, James, Crick, Henry

This signature was sacked by Von Miller.

I think fixing the D is most important. Both sides of the ball are young and inexperienced but after a couple of mainly offensive drafts by McD

it was refreshing to see a primarily defensive draft last year and I think we still have a lot of holes to fill to become a top 10 D.

Look what a dominant D did with Houston. What a turnaround from last year. I think it will take longer to build a dominant O considering much of that would be dependent on either letting TT develop or replacing him. I’m more interested in the first.

I think on O we really need a RB to spell McGahee. I’d love Lamar Miller in rd 1.

I also think there are some great defensive FA that we should target. I want the Orange Crush back. We started the process last year now let’s finish it.

This is a fairly easy question to answer

The offense could definitely use a few additions but all in all will continue to improve through the growth of the very young OL, QB and WR’s who are all at least average or above. The D however needs a serious overhaul with only 3 or 4 avg. or above starters and 2 of them aging quickly. Also consider the final 4 in this years playoffs for final evidence as to where we should focus our rebuilding efforts.

BPA

This is an oversimplification of the draft saying O or D. The solution is best player available. When it is our turn to draft, we choose the best player available at that time in the draft. Why reach for an average d linemen because we need it when we could get the numer one running back or receiver? Great teams are built by drafting the best players. Why do you think New England is good every year: they draft the best players on their board. So the answer to what comes first is: it depends on who is available.

Let’s assume we draft 2 starters per year. At the end of 5 years we will have potentially 6 elite players insteadsof medicore players at positions of need. With the addition of FA, taking the BPA is the right call.

Two things:

1) Regardless of where our offense is, we are being shown during this playoff stretch, that defenses win games. The Giants were able to stop the Packers, the 49ers stopped the Saints – those are prolific offenses, but holding them down allows opportunities.
2) Offensive scheming might take some time and growing pains. There really isn’t a single spot on the offense that we can take for granted; whereas we can say that we’re set DE, SLB, WLB, and maybe one of the DTs.

That being said, I think there is a more clear understanding of what we need on defense to get a complete, elite unit. I think that we draft/go through FA with a defensive mind set, even if we don’t get our offensive crew completely figured out, we get one side of the ball figured out. This will allow us to get more possessions next season, hold off the high-powered offenses (can’t allow 5 40+ point games!), and better figure out our offensive gaps.

I agree totally with most, the only exception being that we are set at DE.

Ayers is a good player and I like him but we need another DE who can consistently rush the passer.

Fox even said it in a press conference. You get a good pass defense by rushing the passer. Miller is great at this but he isn’t a DE. We need a guy who can consistently step up and get pressure when Miller is dropped into coverage.

You're right - my bad.

One DE position is set, not 2. I think Ayers showed a little bit of that rush over the last 3 weeks, but he’s not a consistent edge rusher.
