Tebow and the "Moving Pocket" in 2012?
I read a quote from long-time NFL scout Ken Herock today and it got me to thinking. The quote is
"There are things you can do with [Tebow] that they did years ago. When Len Dawson was the quarterback at Kansas City they had the moving pocket. They could so something like that with Tebow."
Here is the link for anyone who missed it. (Link) I looked into what the heck Ken was talking about, and I have some interesting tidbits for you. I'm interested in anything that could make our team better, and so I submit for your consideration..."The Moving Pocket."
I did some research online and found next to nothing about what a "moving pocket" actually is. I assume it is exactly what it sounds like, but I couldn't find any decent videos (only some Madden screen capture junk) or descriptions (booo Wikipedia) of how it works. The basic theory seems to be that certain routes are only open from certain angles in a "traditional" pocket. By changing the location of the pocket, the offense would change the angles off the pass and make it very difficult to defend. If anyone has any more information on this then please feel free to share.
Initially, I liked what I readabout the moving pocket, because it seems to benefit mobile quarterbacks (TT) and allow them to pass the ball effectively. We have a relatively light and fast offensive line who is very mobile, so that would be a plus in this scenario. However, I do have a couple of concerns too. This system was used back in Super Bowl 4. It's old as dirt. Has the NFL "figured it out" already? Keep in mind though, that the option is also a somewhat "dated" style of running game...and we beat people to death with it this year. "Old" doesn't necessarily mean "bad." My second concern is how effective the "moving pocket" would be against a zone defense. I can see where it could work against man-to-man coverage if the defender isn't playing the ball, but I don't know if it would help/hinder against zone coverage.
I believe we have some of the universe's most intelligient and educated football minds right here at MHR and I'd love to get some feedback on this. So how about it? Also, is anyone here old enough to have seen the "moving pocket" in person? KaptainKirk? :-) I kid Sensei...I kid.

I like it.
It sounds like the goal is similar to running a naked bootleg, something I wish Denver would do more of. Get Tebow on the move and let him throw. Maybe this would be something to get him to be more effective in the pocket.

The only people around here that would know are probably HoosierTeacher and Styg...
A term that was once used for an OLine movement was a ‘trey’ move where the OLine moved in unison in one direction kind of like a ‘power’ run move. But, I’m not sure about the moving pocket term. Suggestion? You might try and email the guy if you can locate his email address. Maybe on facebook…
Win, lose or draw, we are the Denver Broncos! 13-3 Baby!!! Until we ain't!

Part of the problem with moving the QB out of the middle of the field is in practice you’re limiting the amount of ground the secondary has to cover. The throw-back play works occasionally, but generally you’re cutting the field in half, which with the speed of today’s defenders makes the windows incredibly tight.
i keep dancing on my own.
I would say that it could be implemented over the offseason
And sure, it’s a viable option. The key would be synchronizing Tebow and the O-Line. Tim likes to improvise though and that is what keeps getting him Sacked. Well, a combination of that and decision-making/holding on to the ball. The O-Line never knows what he is going to do, because Tebow doesn’t either. For something like this to work, it would take discipline from Tim. Of course it also means that a level of trust between him and the receivers as well as the receivers catching more passes consistently. That part can be remedied with more practice time. Tim needs to trust his passing too.
The only negative I can see from the moving pocket, is taking away approximately half of the field. It worked with Elway because he could throw a frozen rope 60 across the field.

I’ve been calling for exactly this all season long except the termination has been “rolling pocket”. Until Tebow evolves as a pocket passer (ala Elway) this is the way to go. It gets him out in space and opens up the field to see his receivers better. The play action naked bootleg was used against Pittsburgh with great success and it was great to see a “blast from the past” as this was an Elway staple.
Another intriguing idea is to designate at least one receiver as a zone read, meaning running to the open zones as a play develops (much like a motion offense in basketball), which I believe Shannon Sharpe was excellent at. This is a great way to involve the TEs on the short to medium routes which gives our QBs kinda of an automatic hot route.
"Peace, a journey without distance to a place we have never left."
If I remember correctly, Hank Stram introduced the concept
and I believe it was an outgrowth of the veer offense. The idea being to add an additional threat to the veer by having a “moving pocket” that stayed in front of the QB, sold the defense that it would be a run, and allowed the QB to throw a short or intermediate range pass.

don't look now...
but cabbage is running 3rd. always vote cabbage, never a bad idea.
mccoy called a great game against the steelers. use that stuff next season, and expand on it. rollouts, bootlegs, play-action…we need to blitz protect much better and shore up tim’s blindside before we can even think about a passing attack in 2012. or a pocket. our pocket has holes, we need to think beyond the pocket.
who will be our new oc? i like jim fassell, who fox worked under as dc on the giants. time to return the favor. who out there is creative enough to call the zone-read et all, and a strong pass attack? better yet, who wants this job with tebow? who believes? wants the pressure? hmmm…
