Hey guys, I just saw that Chris Harris just made Pro Football Weekly's All-Rookie team as a safety. Of course, he played as a nickelback this year, but his work in the middle was noticeable enough that they felt they HAD to get him on the list somewhere. This makes me wonder if he could actually pull off such a move?
I know this this is rather outside the box, and it is not intended to be anything but outside the box. But if it were possible for Harris to play the position, it could help the front office with how to handle adding personnel in the secondary in the offseason. I think many, if not most, are suspecting that Dawkins could be retiring this year, leaving a huge hole in the middle. Quinton Carter may be able to fill one spot for years to come, but Rahim Moore has a lot to prove to be trusted out there. It cannot be assumed that we can succeed in signing a starter-quality FA, and it would probably be a poor use of resources if another safety is drafted high again after taking 2 last year.
I think some see Harris as being our 2nd starting CB next year after Champ, while others would rather keep him in the slot and draft a CB for the future. Seeing as how Squid and Vaughn would be returning, there would be quite a logjam in the depth chart involving players that won't see the field every down. If the front office thought they could go ahead and try to prepare Harris as a safety, it could narrow down where they need to go in FA or the draft: cornerback.
Harris doesn't exactly strike me as a ballhawk, but he can break up passes, he can tackle, seems to not be out of position very often, and if he added some pounds to a frame that could probably handle it, he could possibly be able to play closer to the box when needed. I know it would be asking a lot from such a young player, but he has already accomplished more than anyone in football thought he could. If the draft had a do-over, there's no way he would go undrafted again.
This is just for fun, and would never expect it, but man if they thought he could pull this off.....
