Mario Williams may hit open market
Currently plays 3-4 OLB, but came into the league as a #1 overall pick 4-3 BEAST DE. I personally would love to see him paired with Dumervil, and let Von better learn his position, and 3rd and long, could cause all kinds of HAVOC. putting all 3 on the line at the same time! Just look at NYG's pass rush, when they get Tuck JPP and Osi all pass rushing at once!

I don’t know if we could afford him, but if we could land him it would be amazing.

I mentioned this morning that I have done some reseach on him and he has a 16mil franchise tag on him...
He’s a beast in the 4/3 and would be just what the Fox ordered. IMO he wouldn’t be any different than drafting a top 5 draft pick with experience. With Mario Williams, Dumervil and Von Miller we would be a killer defense and a nightmare for any OC and quarterback to game plan around. Since we play some pretty good teams next year we better have a sound defense or we will see a repeat of what happens when we face great QBs…Take your pick, work hard and make the playoffs and beyond or make the playoffs and die in it…
Win, lose or draw, we are the Denver Broncos! 13-3 Baby!!! Until we ain't!
The only difference would be pay. Williams IMO will command a large Dumervil type of contract.
I’d love to have him but not sure if we’ll spend that kind of money. He would definitely be a difference maker. I also don’t see the Texans letting him go.

But Williams is worth that kind of money,
Dumervil is not – Doom is overpaid – another mistake by McD/X.
Agree that Texans are unlikley to let Williams go.
I think he's worth that kind of money as well but I dont' think we'll spend it.

explain why Dumervil is over paid!
the man creates havoc and disrupts offenses. He was double teamed a lot this year and rightfully so. ANY OC who doesn’t game plan for Dumervil is an idiot. The Kid is magic!

he's a lot like Doom.

Can you find the 'W' in this mess? Tebow can.
We'd have to convince Doom to restructure. I think he's our highest paid guy.

he costs us 14.5 million against the cap
And now for something completely different

It'll be tricky. Depends on how much Mario wants to come here and how much Doom will give up to make it happen.
but the fact we won a playoff game will help us attract FA’s

my guess is Mario will demand a contract on par with Doom's
he definitely deserves it. If we could get him for less than 10 million a year (and not compounding) I’d definitely say go for it but at 14.5 million, as good as he is, is it really worth it to bring in a 3rd exterior pass rush when what the broncos really need is an interior guy. I guess if the Broncos think Williams could move inside on passing downs and such it could be worth it.

without a doubt, Williams will get a massive well deserved contract.
but my guess is that Houston slaps him with the tag and trades him before they let him walk.

Love the player but the price tag would be huge
Doubt we would be able to sign anything else of value after that which IMO isn’t worth it. Broncos need interior pass rushers, not exterior and signing Williams would give us little room to sign anyone else.
In a cap free, infinite budget world I would say go for it but not in todays NFL.
And now for something completely different
I'd love to understand our fiscal situation a little better
There are some pretty sweet UFAs out there this year and I believe that we’re pretty low under the cap. Admittedly we need to re-sign a lot of players but only Bunkley and Prater appear to be players with a big pay day coming.
I like to think of myself as a bit of a realist with my off-season wish-listing and I find myself hoping for Mario Williams and LaRon Landry as our major off season acquisitions and then filling the rest through the draft. Am I being so wrong??!?!

the broncos are currently 20 million below next years cap
once FA starts we’ll be roughly 30-35 million under the cap depending on retirements and who we resign. Williams will most likely cost us around 14 million and Landry would cost about 6 or 7 million. That’s 20 million gone right there plus we’d still have our draft picks to sign which will cost us roughly 5 or 6 million.
It’s possible but that would basically be all we’d be able to do and it wouldn’t leave us with much room for next year.
And now for something completely different

Hmmm - thanks
I’m not sure Williams will cost that much. Coming off an injury like he is, I’d pull that down to the $10M-per range. Landry, I won’t argue with.
Regardless, it can be done. I think the Broncos have the smarts to pull this off. Do they have the deep pockets?

Yes, yes and yes!!
IMO Williams is one of the top 10 (probably top 5) defenders in the league. If we could pick him up and allow Von to stay at LB (where he could move around and blitz from all different angles) it would make our pass rush unstoppable.
He’s coming off IR, so hopefully that would drop his value slightly, but you’re talking about a 280 lb guy who seamlessly moved from DE to 3/4 rush OLB. The guy is an incredible stud.

he suffered either a major tear or a major break halfway through the year

Torn pectoral, I'm pretty sure
I remember thinking it was the same injury Doom had. It’s possible I’m wrong though

Although I don't think we'll get Williams due to price tag I do find these words by Fox encouraging
“(The) problems we had this year when people spread us out,” Fox said, “we have to identify that and upgrade where we can. The best pass defense in the world is a pass rush. I don’t think you can ever get too good in that area if you look at the teams that are playing next weekend.”
and the reason Mario will be out of our price range is that they seem to be looking for the value signing rather than the high priced FA.
By Xanders:
He said the team will be “aggressive and smart at the same time” in pursuit of what he called “value signings.”

I see no way he leaves Houston
Without the Texans fans being up in arms. He’s considered the best player every drafted to the team and is really a symbol on that defense. I would love to have him, even with a high price since he can rush the passer and be dominant against the run, but I believe there would be riots in Houston if he was to leave there.
I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.
