25. Denver Broncos, Mark Barron, SS, Alabama

Brian Dawkins, 38, has a severe neck injury that might put his career in jeopardy. Even if it doesn't, the Broncos need to think about upgrading the position since Dawkins' playing days are clearly numbered. Barron replaces Dawkins' hitting ability in the secondary.

Personally..

This is a lousy pick since the Broncos used two draft picks last season on Safety….. Still, any talent upgrade in the defensive backfield is needed…

Denver will know by now if Moore is a bust or not. He looked horrible out there to me, but the coaches see him in practice, film session and weight room. If they think he can be salvaged and at 21 years of age, he’s still a puppy… then you don’t make this pick.

If they think he is a bust, this would be a great pick. Poor safety play was reason #1 we got killed vs New England. Bruton was a bad joke out there. Bush was even worse.

Tim Tebow is Denver's 2012 starting QB. I'm not even kind of sorry that offends some of you (including you Elway).

That was piss poor scheme wise both times we played. But when you have Joe Mays on Gronk, kind of tells you how thin we are at LB.

Sometimes I like to imagine

What would have happened if McD hadn’t been an idiot and would have allowed Nolan to do his thing.

Of course we wouldn’t have Tebow or Von but still it would have been an interesting thing to watch

and McD would still be our coach. He’d probably be an ok coach too, because he wouldnt have done the moronic things that made him a bad coach

that 2008 is and will probably always be the worst defense I ever laid eyes on.

i don't think Bly was horrible

obviously he was no Champ, but any corner opposite champ is going to struggle, especially during champs prime years.

He had\has such a reputation that QB’s avoid him. The side effect of that is that they target the other side of the field far more often. Bly was bound to get burned occasionally. The DC should have been smart enough to compensate with more safety help on that side of the field.

Not that he was alone by any stretch of anyone’s imagination, but Bruton was noticeably horrible against the Pats. I think he was injured the first time he actually made contact with a Patriot player. And Moore seemed to be watching the game. From the field.

the problem is...

They have Rahim Moore and Quinton Carter both playing at free safety, don’t they? Bruton is Dawkins’ backup. Maybe they still need a strong safety, and Carter hasn’t shown to be the most effective tackler.

he's okay at ST and as depth

but Mays should never again be an NFL starter, or ever again play a down in a passing situation… at least for a 4-3 team…

His liabilities are minimized in a 3-4, where he could be a below average 3-4 ILB, but in a 4-3, his liabilities in coverage and lateral movement/pursuit just killed us.

As you mention DJ is just fine as a WLB.

Goodman played like sh!t for most the season. Got burned by most wr. Yea he had his pkays but its irritating to see the opposing Qbs wind up and launch to his side and see the wr 2 steps in front if him and hes not even looking for the ball. Depending on whats left id say cb is a top priority whether it be free agency or the draft. Goodmans no Bailey and at the same age, there is def a huge difference in play.

No thanks. Ill take BPA DT/CB/WR/RB (Ive said no to 1st round RBs before, but Im coming around since we are only 25th)

I agree with Bena though. Waste of a pick. We have two safeties entering their second years. Give them a shot. Carter played much better the last few weeks. Also, I dont know WHAT you guys are talking about with Bruton. He played excellent ball the second half of the season. Bush was lousy also… but he was 5th string for a reason right?

We have needs at multiple positions. But some of those positions have youth, so it would stupid to draft them again.

I'm with ya Teboner

… though I do think we need to bring in some safety competition… probably not a 1st rounder, but a solid vet FA or mid round pick I’d be all for.

In the first, if there is anyone even close to value at CB/DT/MLB, that is my pick. Irving may work out, but if he can’t beat out Mays, who is terrible at everything but tackling folks directly in front of him, I’m not optimistic. Replacing Mays will also make our safeties look better, because I saw at least 2 plays early in the NE game where the safeties couldn’t make a play to stop a middle pass to the TE because Mays didn’t get deep enough in his drop in the middle zone… the safety makes the tackle and was the closest coverage guy, but thats just because Mays allowed TB to put no loft on the ball and drop it in front of the safety on the backend of his middle zone.

If not any of those positions, RB could work, but like with most 1st rnd RBs, I’m not sure the guys like available there are that much better than 2nd/3rd round options… in whcih case try to trade back a few slots and add value that way.

by cjfarls on Jan 17, 2012 10:25 AM MST up reply actions

Im not worried about Irving.

Somewhere it was posted showing just how few middle/inside LBs started their rookie season. Its the QB of the defense, a lot of learning and transition from college to pro. Rookies starting at that position is the exception, not the rule. Casey Matthews (stud at Oregon) got pulled in the first half of the season because he couldnt hack it. It was too much for a rookie to do. He’ll be good, but it was just too soon. Im sure Mays called a good game, its the execution that hurt us. Irving wouldnt have helped, regardless of tackling ability.

As far as RB goes, I suppose if we could get that Miller guy at 25, Id be happy. He would be a superb rotational/change of pace back for a year or so until McGahee turns it in or gets hurt. I would prefer another position, but I dont think Id be upset.

I prefer we let our 2nd round draft pick develop before we spend a draft pick to replace him.

The DT value is going to be perfect for where we are picking. Brockers, Still, or Dontari Poe would be a very nice pick.

we have too many needs to trade up for anyone in the 1st.

The only trade ups I expect will be like last year when we trade from the 5th to the 4th and lose a 6th round draft pick in the process.

Trading up in the 1st is a terrible idea for any team unless you are competing for a Super Bowl now. Look at Atlanta. Trade up for Julio Jones. Get blown out in the Wild Card round.

The Broncos have needs at CB, DT, MLB, RB, WR, TE, OG, etc. We need every draft pick available to try and fill the holes.

What do you guys think about moving Goodman to safety?

Along the same lines as I’ve heard discussed in regards to Champ. Let Goodman finish his career at safety, while our young guys back there develop. We can buy more time to see if they’re going to be legit starters. Harris replaces Goody, and we can see if he’s a #2 CB. Draft a high CB or acquire a FA to learn under Champ, and hopefully become his replacement in a couple years.

by eastCOrange&Blue on Jan 17, 2012 3:07 PM MST up reply actions

For a position like Safety, where they just used two draft picks last draft, I’d rather sign a veteran and allow Moore and Carter to develop. Hopefully they’re will be a solid CB, DT, or RB available at 25 or just trade down and stockpile picks.

I thought pass coverage was supposed to be WW’s strength.

by tunesmith on Jan 17, 2012 10:52 AM MST up reply actions

good for a LB

is totally different than good for a LB…

and re: “worse than Dawk”… who knows, but Dawk was also a major liability in coverage.

I’m tired of having to scheme around slow, subpar coverage safeties…. Dawk brought other benefitsto the team that made him valuable (like TT, who is a lousy passer but who has other good things that make him valuable), but his coverage skills were below average at best. I want 2 safeties back there, either of which I feel comfortable with playing a single-high zone. If you have that flexibility, you have a ton more options in how to disguis/scheme your coverages underneath. As is, we are much more limited in our zone schemes, because the offense knows that Dawk will never be in single-high… he may be barely sufficient in a 2-deep, but even then if we want to stop the deep pass we’re more likely to use a cover 3 varient and/or have Dawk take a short zone… using WW as a safety would be no better, and possibly worse because he doesn’t have 15 years worth of instinct to help him get good jumps on the play.

by cjfarls on Jan 17, 2012 11:32 AM MST up reply actions

for relative value, I'm maybe okay with this

but WW has even worse problems than DJ in shedding blocks and holding the point of attack. Don’t kid yourself that this is an upgrade.

If the extra cap space lets us get a better MLB or DBs, sure it might be worth it… but WW isn’t a step forward, and is more treading water.

by cjfarls on Jan 17, 2012 11:35 AM MST up reply actions

that's the thing

lateral move to promote WW as a starter. save roughly 6 mil on DJ’s salary to bring in an upgrade at MLB or Safety. I’m with ya.

"Choo, Choo!!!!!" LOL

by prototype on Jan 17, 2012 11:50 AM MST up reply actions

problem is

I don’t think cap space is the limiting factor on our MLB/safety search….

in which case keeping both DJ and WW, with DJ being the better overall player (if just marginally) makes sense. Having a little depth at LB is not a bad thing either, given injuries are the norm, not the exception.

by cjfarls on Jan 17, 2012 12:03 PM MST up reply actions

He’s too small and underpowered to play MLB. Would make a better SS if he could prove he could handle coverage.

You don't draft Safeties out of NEED, you draft them to develop...

Rahim Moore and Quintin Carter both struggled during the season and Carter progressed faster than Moore. This is not the time to be labeling these guys busts. The Broncos need to go after the best FA available aggressive so we have veteran leadership back there. Hope like hell BDawk stays on as Secondary ass’t coach. I think EFX should try to get more 2nd rd picks as there is the same talent level there as there is where we pick at 25.

I like Barron in the 1st if EFX feel it is the best choice, because that would mean they don’t think any of our young safety’s are good enough to be the guy at SS. I think picking at 25 will give us a good advantage at picking up some good value at positions that are not usually taken earlier like interior linemen. There should be some very good OG’s available when we pick.

With Coach Zorro on our side, we will slice opponents to ribbons. Tim Tebow gives me hope and I already have faith and charity in my heart! I see a propitious future rife with Lombardis for our Broncos!

NFL.com Wyche has the broncos taking Nick Perry which doesn't make much sense.

He’s an undersized DE, but the broncos already have one. Though, it is interesting he has Trent Richardson falling to 17. If he falls that far, the broncos better trade up and get him. We thought the rushing attack was good this year? Tag Richardson up with McGahee and the broncos would be breaking the team rushing record again.

Seems like a bad pick because of last draft, but we need somebody back there with some sort of instincts, the reaction time by Carter/Bruton/Moore/Bush are just plain Bad. We need some impact players back there.

The question lies, where does CHamp fit into this? Is he gonna move to Saftey soon? Couple years?
