Around SBN: NFL Safety Ryan Clark's Motivational Workout

Ideal FA period: Defense

I'm just going to make this simple. This is what I want our defense to look like next year. I know we are near the top of the league in cap space so I think this is possible.

Guys we pick up:

Cliff Avril, D'quwell Jackson, Cortland Finnegan, Laron Landry

With these pick ups our defense looks like:

Avril Thomas Bunkley Dumervil

Miller Jackson DJ

Champ Finnegan

Carter Landry

Ayers becomes rotational, Mays and Bruton go back to strictly special teamers, Harris, Vaughn, and Squid are good corner depth. Look at that line up, it's scary. This is assuming Dawk retires.

If anyone has what our cap numbers are going to be this year I'd love to see what they look like to get a better idea on what we can and cannot do this off season.

If you guys have things you'd like to change, add or remove I'd love to hear them, the more input we get the wiser we all become and quite frankly you'd be hard pressed to find a fan base that understands their team better than our fan base.

Defense wins championships, ask the Packers and Saints

I'd settle for Finnegan and Landry

Hopefully Bowlen is willing to spend some money now that he’s got the cash cow that is Tim Tebow.

LOL you'd settle for Landry and Finnegan? You've got high standards.

I’m hope to God we can get Landry so we don’t have to waste a draft pick and focus on getting a pocket collapsing DT. Speaking of DT, surprise you(meaning OP) don’t have Ty Warren starting over Thomas.

Ty Warren

He hasn’t played now since ‘09 so I have doubts about what he can bring to the table and at the end of the day DT depth is a huge positive so it would be a pleasant surprise if Warren can come in and start. I’m obviously not the coach so im sure fox will have the correct guys in the line up on game day.

Alright just wanted to know your opinion on Warren, like I said I hope we can get a pocket collapsing DT next year be it Warren or a rookie.

I live in Detroit as well

So i see Cliff Avril a lot and his pass rushing skills are near the elite level. He will bring 7- 11 sacks to any team that signs him and Detroit probably won’t retain him because they’re trying to restructure megatrons contract which will break records.

I would add Curtis Loftin to the wish list

MLB is a big need mays can’t get the job done and so far Irving is only a special team player and backup .

I live in the DC area, Huge broncos fan since 85

Laron Landry has reoccuring achillies tendon injury and did not play the last 5 to 6 games of the season! Redskins will likely not resign him. We would have to make sure he is healthy b4 we sign him!

There is no way the 49ers let him go

That would be like us letting go of a young Champ Bailey

You think?

Finnegan is good but I think he’s hit a wall with the FO at Tennessee. Plus, they just shelled out buku bucks for CJ1K; Locker is gonna need a contract soon; they need receivers. I just don’t see Finnegan sticking around in Tenn.

Rogers would be a good pick, too – but I think he has aged a bit. I think it’s the same thing as our safety-shuffle — we bring in John Lynch, Dawk, etc. that are pro-bowl safeties at the end of their careers. It’s a band-aid, not the recipe for a playoff contender. I think we need some solid, good youth in the secondary.

I agree with EFJ – ideally, Finnegan and Landry would end up with us. I would like to pick up Avril, too, and get a pass-rushing DT. That would be rather formidable — but I just don’t see us eating the cost of that many big-name players in FA.

by H-bizzle on Jan 17, 2012 9:26 AM MST up reply actions

Finnegan is a little over hyped.

This is probably bad value for the dollar. Might be an upgrade but at what price? He’ll cost money and he seems like a knucklehead. Not sure that is what young team needs right now

Also there were a bunch of aggressive secondary play with the Texans, Ravens, Saints, and 49ers. Being aggressive just shows that they have confidence.

not sure about that

Cash budget can change from year to year, and there are years where there are way more cap expenditures than cash expenditures.

by tunesmith on Jan 17, 2012 2:05 PM MST up reply actions

I thought new CBA required spending to 95% of cap?

Also:
Ty Warren/K Vickerson would definitely be in the mix for starting DL. In fact, Bunkley/Warren would likely start with Vickerson/Thomas coming off rotation. That depth alone moves us up in quality depth for sure compared to Unrein/McBean. Im sure we’ll add DT/DE via FA and Draft. I think they’ll let M Thomas walk. I’d like to see if Nate Irving uproot Mayes w/o going for a MLB via FA? I like growing our own…

Where are we getting all this money?

Xanders said yesterday the Broncos were up to 98% of their budget limit. We still had 24 million available cap…so idk if we can afford all those guys

by Scotty Payne on Jan 17, 2012 10:48 AM MST reply actions

The baseline salary cap is $120.375M

95% of that number is $114.356M

That means out of the approximately $24M in cap space we have we need to spend about $18M more next year. We’re going to have money to spend; they’ve just got to do it intelligently.

TurfSharks.com

by ElwayFanJ on Jan 17, 2012 11:12 AM MST up reply actions

Nevermind, it's more complicated than that

http://www.askthecommish.com/salarycap/faq.asp

We have to spend 99% of the cap ($120.375M) in 2012. We still have to spend about $23M bucks.

by ElwayFanJ on Jan 17, 2012 11:24 AM MST up reply actions

All $24m will probably all go in-house.

Bunkley, Colquitt, Prater and Larsen have to be re-signed.
Then there are Clark, Woodyard, Fells, Ball, Willis, McBean, Royal, Mays, Hunter, and Williams.
And lastly Hochstein, Goodman, Haggan, Quinn.

Kreese and Lawrence will decide if Tim Tebow can develop into our future.

I’m not sure I want to be giving up all those 15 yd penalties. I like nasty guys that make plays, not nasty penalty machines that sometimes make plays.

by SD guy on Jan 17, 2012 11:48 AM MST reply actions

Finnegan doesn't have the speed

We need a DB with fluid hips and good speed to match up against Oak speedy wrs, SD’s deep balls and big wrs, and the B’s of KC, Breaston, Bowe, Baldwin all can find the ball. Goody looked too much like a follow corner, Harris looks to be like a Charles Woodson, Plays outside until we go nickel or dime, then he moves into the slot. Vaughn has good speed but showed that when you pick on him that he isn’t ready for #1 WR… Syd showed promise before injury. I think a quality FA would let us put more stock in either DL or lightning fast RB.

by DurangoTebowFan on Jan 17, 2012 11:54 AM MST reply actions

Landry would be the one I'd go after.

The broncos defense isn’t that far away. Bronocos need a veteran safety like Brain Dawkins to come in. When this defense was at it’s peak, Brian Dawkins was every where. Broncos need to regain that by going after Landry.

by tiderfootball09 on Jan 17, 2012 2:43 PM MST reply actions

Let's go aout and get DE Mario Williams, OLB DeMarco Ryans and S LeRon Landry and draft a couple of stud corners to learn behind Champ, Goody and Harris.

I do not see them ‘investing’ much in safety, TE or linebacker since they stocked up last year.
Targets are CB and RB with fillin at WR, DT, OL.
