Tebow is the "Top QB" when camp starts. Big Deal!

That's not a very big endorsement. Oh Gosh, thanks Mr. Elway. If he had said "Tebow will be starting for the Broncos next season", that would have meant something. What a tool. I'm tired of this. If you're not willing to commit to a player, then just give a straight answer or don't answer the question at all. How about, "if Tim doesn't improve we'll have to go find a starter". Or-- "Tim was great for us this year and proved he's a starting QB in the league and for our team". Or -- "We don't know who our QB will be - that will be determined after the draft and camp". It's not rocket science John.

Itnmost cases you would be exactly right.

However, in this particular case I don’t think it is entirely accurate. See, I don’t think there are going to be any first round talent QBs left in the draft at the spot we are picking. Therefore, unless someone is willing to reach for a later round QB in the first, I don’t see any trade prospects out there. Additionally, the teams in most serious need of a QB are picking before us, so chances are they will take one before our pick is even on the clock.

A highly likely scenario

However you can’t discount the fact that QBs do drop down through the draft. To name a few off the top of my head QBs like Aaron Rodgers, Matt Leinart, Brady Quinn, and Jimmy Clausen were all expected to go very high in the draft but ended up falling pretty far down from their projected spots.

I think Pearl’s statement is also a strong possibility, it could be possible that Elway is hedging his bets. If Tebow comes to training camp next and is the same or worse. You’ve only thrown in support to the start of training camp.

It could be possible that Elway is telling Tebow, he’s the starter at the beginning of training camp, but he better improve from now until then or it won’t last very long.

I hope all of the above are true. It covers a lot with saying implicitly saying anything.

What it boils down to, is Elway is either the most savvy or most clueless PR person in the NFL.

Because he is either keeping his thoughts close to the vest and only giving us glimpses, or he has firm opinions that he just doesn’t know how to communicate clearly. I hope every other team in the NFL finds EFX as unpredictable as I do.

Well said

It’s been stated many times (apparently not enough) that many fans (surely not just our own) lack the vision (maturity?) to understand the complete vision. There’s this pervasive “give me what I want right now or I’m mad at you!” mentality that’s really…well, overly-simplistic to put it in its nicest terms.

After the season the Broncos (not just Tim Tebow — but the whole team, including the front office and coaches) put together, I would think they’d earn a lot more respect from even the most impatient of our lot.

Especially after the season We witnessed

and going two deep into the playoffs…. After an almost entirely new Front Office has been put in place and had no real off-season to work with and ‘gel’ with the players. Our head honchos have earned a lot of respect and plenty of trust from me with their actions. Not the words they use, but what they’ve done.

It’s funny that some people focus so much more on the words, when the actions are what are meaningful.

"Coach Speak"?

I don’t think you understand why I’m upset. He talked as if he was saying something profound, like he was paying Tebow a compliment by say he was the teams starting QB when “camp starts”. When “camp starts” – who cares who the QB is when camp starts. That statement has nothing to do with throwing potential draft partners or other teams off.

by PostCorner on Jan 18, 2012 9:15 AM MST up reply actions

Sure it does - has plenty to do with potential draft deals, or throwing other teams off....

I understand why you’ve made yourself upset and thought I did a pretty good job explaining why you shouldn’t worry yourself about it like you are.

More to the point, it matters about as much as a Ryan Leaf rookie card, as to what Elway says to the media. (<— notice the period?) The bottom line that you don’t seem to realize is this:

Do you know what Elway (or the Front Office) tells Tebow? No. For all We know, he could tell Timmy “Look you’re the guy, you know it. I know it. But I have to portray it this way ‘out there’, so don’t think what I’ve confided in you means anything different.” Do you realize that? I don’t know if I’m wasting time here, because it’s really not that difficult a concept.

Elway has been all about non confidence type of talk all season.

Upset is too strong a word. Let’s say disappointed. Early on people were saying Elway’s lack of public support for Tebow was due to Elway wanting to keep Orton’s trade value higher. Then when Orton was gone, it wasn’t Elway’s job to pump Tebow up with supportive comments. All I’m looking for is a mature GM who knows how to deal with his players. Like saying to a girl that she’ll be your date at the “start” of prom.

All I have left to offer you for some form of solace from your doubts...

Is one phrase: Actions speak louder than words.

Otherwise I’ll just have to disagree that I, personally, don’t need to hear “what I want” from the Front Office. As long as I see, on the field, what I want (wins, duh!) – I could care less what Elway or anyone in the front office, feels necessary to tell the media.

Every player competes for his position every day of every year

I remember going to my first Broncos training camp when Tommy Maddux was just drafted in the first round as an eventual replacement for John Elway in 1992. Tim Tebow is a big boy and if he puts in the work he has to he’ll win the job. If he doesn’t he doesn’t and we move on. That’s the way it works.

it'll be interesting to see who the OC is

and what type of offense the team will deploy. If the team brings in a competent pro style QB from the draft and or a pro style QB from FA, both of them would beat Tebow if the Broncos plan to utilize a more conventional offense. That’s just one of the sticky situations that the FO and coaching staff are now in.

Or does the FO just say screw it and go all in with the option style offense and draft and sign players suited for that system? To include an option style QB to be Tebow’s backup. Or will it be more of a hybrid system? You know, try to ease Tebow into becoming an NFL QB.

Elway is afraid of pissing off Tebow fans

I think Tebow has done wonders for us this year, but we all know he needs to improve. The question is do you think he can improve? or rather do you think EFX think he can improve? EFX, they are hedging their bets and trying to play the PR machine. The problem with Tebow is not Tebow, it is his fanbase (the fringe). Tebow needs to step and tell his fringe supports to chill out and let me work this off-season.

by LEEDS on Jan 17, 2012 11:06 AM MST reply actions

I agree with you

But I also think Elway needs to understand he has lightning in a bottle right now. The phenomenon that is Tebow can only be compared to a Tiger Woods, Dale Earnhardt Sr. or Michael Jordan. Surround the young man with a ton of weapons and a great defense and he’ll get us a championship.

You could also say that about half the QBs in this league though.

With a great defense and a ton of weapons there are a lot of QBs who could get us a championship.

I like Tebow but I just think that statement is a blanket statement that really doesn’t endorse him very much or make his case to be our franchise.

What are our other options?

A Peyton Manning way past his prime, a flash in the pan prospect like Matt Flynn (aka Matt Cassel), or another Orton-esque player like Jason Campbell? The only guys I could see us going after in the draft are Nick Foles, Kirk Cousins, and Brandon Weedon and I’m not sure any of those guys give us a better chance than a team built around Tebow. That’s all I’m saying.

The guy is a game changer and a play maker. If he does have more weapons and a good D then he’ll have the time to improve by leaps and bounds. I agree with you there. I just thought the comment was too general.

Some game changers shine just fine in practice and TC. Traditionally, Tebow has not. I’m hoping he’ll do better this year after a full off-season with the team. Tebow himself quoted proverbs 27:17: “Iron sharpens iron, and a man sharpens the person of his neighbor.” I read that as: Let Elway sharpen Tebow without so much belly-aching.

There would not have been a lack of public support from Elway in reguards to Cutler.

Cutler and the 2008 core of talented young offensive players were the best that the Broncos has ever seen and John Elway of all people knows that. The only public statements that Elway would have been saying about Cutler is that “he has all the skills to be the best QB that the Broncos has ever known and it’s my job to make sure that unlike me, he is constantly surrounded by quality players and coaches to insure that it comes to fruition”.

There wouldn’t be a damn QB controversy in Denver if not for Josh McDaniels. The new FO and coaching staff could have avoided this circus and concentrated on making the Broncos perennial super bowl participants. The only controversies would be should the Broncos charter their own jumbo jet to the pro bowl? Or should the Broncos build another wing on Dove Valley to secure all of the Lombardi Trophies?

The sooner Bronco fans embrace a team concept of Broncos and less the “awe and wonder” of Tebow the sooner he become less polarizing and then our team will grow and be respected as more than just a phenomenon of ONE player.

I watched the presser

and thought EFX was very fair in what they said about Tebow. If they thought Tebow would beat out Orton THIS year (remember they wanted to trade Orton) without an offseason, then he will certainly beat out a rookie or two and Quinn or some other vet they bring in. Tebow will look better after working with Elway in the offseason. Besides, how bad will Elway look if he very vocally goes out and works with Tebow and then has to come back and say he failed at teaching Tebow (a smart hard worker) anything. Elway will have some skin in the Tebow game…I say Tebow gets a fair shake next year and if he sucks it up it’s time to look someplace else anyway. If he sucks and we only win 4 or 5 games we’ll have a decent draft pick to get a new QB. I doubt that will happen though.

If Tebow doesn’t improve going into next year then Elway and company have every right to look for competition at the position. Why would they show all of their cards at this juncture anyways? If the team which includes Tebow can’t improve we will not be in the playoffs next year. The schedule will likely be more difficult and the AFC West will likely not be as injury plagued. Lets just wait and see how a regular off-season works out for Tebow. I think and hope we will be pleasantly surprised and there will not be a QB controversy. We're a long way from being a good team

So much change can still happen, and that change can also affect what kind of quarterbacking we’ll even need.

I just looked through the final ratings of all our positions over at advancednflstats, compared to every other team, and it’s looking pretty dire still. So many holes.

We have one solid starter-level WR in Demaryius. We’re thin at RB, and TE.

On defense, our best position is the front line – our DE and DT basically rank as “average starter”, nothing special. All four (Doom, Ayers, Bunkley, Thomas) rank as starter level but while Doom close to top-ten, the others are on the medium-low end of starter level.

Our linebackers suck – Von Miller is top-ten or so, but Mays and DJ are the next highest-ranking backers, and they are around top 50 or 60, just barely holding on to starter level. Mays could make quality depth, while I expect DJ either stays on if our linebackers continue to suck, or moves to another sucky team if we get someone better than him. Either way, we need better than both of them.

Corners are hard to judge, because they won’t grade out well in that system if they don’t get challenged much, so I’ll skip them.

As for safeties, Dawkins was not pro-bowl quality, but he was a solid starter – top 10-20. After that there was a very long drop, and then you saw Moore, Carter, and Bruton in that order. Maybe they can improve, but we do need one more stud in there to take pressure off of them.

At any rate, I think Elway said all he can say, given how much change we’re likely going to see. We don’t even know what character of team we’ll have next season, and don’t know if we’ll have coordinators that can deal with Tebow’s style of offense.

by tunesmith on Jan 17, 2012 12:44 PM MST reply actions   1 recs

Our front line looked below average in the games we played against top QB's

Doom is a better OLB. Bunk,Thomas are solid rotational guys, not saying we need a superstar there but more bodies at the same or even higher level. Agreed Mays sucks and DJ is serviceable at best.

I believe that Elway wants TT to succeed but doesn’t want him continually taking on LBs and DEs, that can only happen if TT can raise his completion percentage, if he cannot, seeya….

Bringo tune.

This is not a good team. There, I said it. Many if not most of our starters would see very little of the field on the other 7 teams in that elite 8. It was fun and exciting but in all rights we should never have been there.

To expect more play off wins immediately is not being realistic.

There won't be a trade

Elway has already stated he’s going to be a Bronco. In either case, Tebow didn’t put up mind blowing numbers, so I don’t see us getting an offer for picks and/or players that we can’t refuse.

Just because Elways says TT will be a Bronco doesn't mean...

that TT can’t or won’t be traded. It’s a business and I have a hunch Elways would love to remove the circus. Don’t get me wrong, TT brought me back to watching Bronco games again with excitement. For the past two years, it was pretty depressing and we had no energy. I hope TT improves and proves everyone wrong, but I also know that in the NFL, almost no one is “untouchable”

You lost me...

when you called John Elway a tool. I pretty much quit reading your post at that point.

When you chose Tim Tebow over John Elway

you’re no friend of mine.

Excuse me, do these effectively hide my thunder?

Tebow has the better part of a season

On the field now. Everyone has been able to see with their own eyes what Tebow can do. For anyone to say he deserves the full support of the team as starter next year wasn’t really watching the games. Tebow did a great job leading the Broncos this season. The team as a whole is not a great team, we have good players, some great. All our players play with fire and all deserve our praise but we are not anything other than a good team. Tebow was not great enough to take our average team and win a superbowl. That does not mean he won’t, but he didn’t. So while the problems we had during the season cannot be laid at his feet, he was not the reason we overcame them either. The kid showed tons of fire and attitude and sometimes that was a problem. Like running backwards for twenty yards and being sacked…. Sometimes it was great, like making the long throw after scrambling. No, he should not be crowned, he has the crown… He can keep the crown too, if he can beat whatever competition there is for the job. It is his to lose.
Now. Here is the really important part. We need a backup QB that can come in and run our gameplan. We need a good player to want to be in Denver and that means we need to be able to offer that person the starting job. I want someone good enough to challenge our starter for many reasons. Competition usually leads to better play is a biggie. Being able to win and make the playoffs despite injury to a key player is also a biggie.
So, while I understand wanting to have Tebow as our starter. I am also very tired of all the Tebow is the best ever and should be or franchise player talk. He was good, some things were amazing. Some things were amazingly bad. That is the reality. Tebow has flaws, they are serious enough that he may never be a great player. I believe he has shown he will be an NFL QB, now we need to find out just how good.

The Broncos wins were team efforts

But the success Tebow had at QB were on him. I say this because the coaching staff didn’t do him any favors. I can count the screen pass plays on one hand. I never saw a TE run a short zone route. How successful can a team be running play action with the QB waiting for receivers on double move patterns.
I guess I’m upset that the team seems to be blind to all of this.

you do not run screens from an option-read offense
plus Tim has many problem with short passes, he shot-puts them

Actually,

Tebow is said to throw one of the better screen passes. So I’ve heard. I have witnessed a few myself. Not saying he isn’t inaccurate, he is. But he is certainly capable.

Whatcha gonna do, brother, when the Broncos run wild on you!

What I got out of him saying that in the presser is

Elway saying he’s behind Tim and he has his back. I thought it was a great compliment to a job well done for Tebow this year and I think Tim did too.

Anything to keep the light off of the decisions he has made ?

What happens if and when it suddenly becomes apparent that John Fox was a loser in Carolina for a reason ?

I am not saying he was for sure, just saying it is hilarious how much abuse Tim is
allowing these guys to put him through.. What a stunning fail move it would be to get rid of him.. although if he is just going to be the management whipping boy, puleeze release the kid so he can find a team that wants to let him play..

The first thing that coaching did wrong was assume TT is a run first QB. That is so far from not real, it is laughable.

Look at any of his games from college and tell me that.. He needs open receivers and Denver has none. He can bullet the ball where it needs to be..OR he can, if he needs to..run. In the entire 22 game winning streak he put together with Harvin and Hernandez and Cooper and Nelson and Spikes.. no one ever thought of him as a run threat..not really.. It was the typical Florida Gators Fun n Gun with an option.

The Florida Gators did not beat the Sam Bradford led Oklahoma record breaking offense by running the ball..

The fans of the Denver Broncos have been duped by the coaching staff and half the NFL into thinking that somehow the dropped balls, and their inability to see what is in front of them and identify other problem areas, and appropriately assign responsibility leads to Tim Tebow not being a starting QB..

Belichik would argue the point..he is not blinded by his ego or fear of having his assessment called into question.

LET THE OFF SEASON BEGIN !!!

Did Elway say anything that wasn't obvious?

Who in their right mind thinks Tim will start if he DOESNT improve his passing by the regular season? I wanna see Tim succeed in the worst way…but he MUST improve and Elway is the right guy to help him AND make the call…any of you wizards more qualified? How many KC games do you wanna watch next season? Give it a rest…Elway went as far as he could given Tim’s passing performance, inconsistency and issues. We all expect Tim to improve – no one will try harder – so lets let it play out..and root for the guy – and Elway…
