Dre Kirkpatrick now within reach???

105779781_display_image_medium

Apparently he was just arrested for possession of marijuana.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/01/17/likely-first-round-pick-dre-kirkpatrick-arrested-for-marijuana-possession/

He's going to fall in the 1st round because of this indiscretion and we'd be stupid not to take him if he's there at #25. Hopefully this makes other teams needing a CB like the Cowboys, Bengals, and Lions look at other options. What do you guys think?

No really I would love to have him. I even considered a mock to trade up for him.

Not so much anymore. Not because I am against pot that bad, but we need to do better than that. Minnefield is looking mighty good now.

Dallas needs a CB badly....

Newman is old… and Jenkins has regressed. I think Cincy might be in the market as well… I think we’d have to move if we want him.

That is the problem

But it could also push an Alfonzo Dennard or Janoris Jenkins down to us and I’d still be more than happy with one of those two.

If he's there and goes really well in the interviews and clarify that it was a one off deal I say hell yeah

But the problem is that this kind of indiscretion never ends here, he will say “that was the first time and …..” and bla bla bla but he’ll need to really impress people….

So he will have to do pretty well on interviews, but he most likely will be drafted by the raiders, Cowboys or Lions ahead of us………

You're reading my mind from todays new....

The minute I saw the article about Dre, I had 2 thoughts:

1. Is #25 now in play for him, b/c he’s be an immediate starter. Super skill set!
2. This is like Parrish Cox, Part II? Except Cox was a 2nd projected that dropped to 5th.

Good Idea but...

This would be a great pick at #25, but Chris Harris did a tremendous job this season and was a rookie was signed as a free agent. I think defense needs to be stressed with their first pick in the draft. Fox needs a few more pieces to the puzzle on that side of the ball.

At #25 we should draft "best player available." We have a bunch of holes and we should just draft a starter.

We need a CB, DT, OL, MLB, RB, WR, QB, and a DE(put those in any order you like. I didn’t put safety on that list because we already picked up a couple in the draft and need to see how they will work out. I think we should get a veteran safety in free agency. If for nothing else, to mentor the young guys.

If we look at that list as whomever is the best one at #25 we can get a quality starter. Whether Dre kirkpatrick is that guy or will even be available at #25….I guess we will see.

It would be hard to pass on him if he falls to us

He probably has the highest upside of any CB this year. But he wouldn’t be the first player whose upside is limited by a teeny tiny brain. Looks to me like Dre Kirkpatrick has just turned himself into Janoris Jenkins. And Broncos have really failed miserably with turning CB’s into anything.

I suspect the position most likely to offer us 1st round value (if we go BPA) is DT. Fletcher Cox and Jerel Worthy will be likely available. There are a slew of CB’s who offer 2nd round value

by yibberat on Jan 17, 2012 8:54 PM MST reply actions

I still think he won't slide to our spot

I’m not even sure if he’ll slide because of that… And if so, maybe he AND Dennard are gone anyway at the #25 =(

Out of curiosity

We have 6 cornerbacks, 4 safeties, and 4 players listed as generic defensive backs on the current roster (including the injured reserve roster). Only 1 will be a free agent in 2012. Only 2 more will be free agents in 2013. 2 were rookies this year and 6 others had 3 or fewer years in the league.

While admittedly, three are rather aged, are the other 11 defensive backs so hopeless that we need to bring in one or more new rookies?

bruton and mcbath(is he still on team?) are always injured. McCarthy is bleh. Moore is like a ghost. Bush looked terrible when he played. Carter shows flashes of good but also flashes of terribleness. We can clear some space to add more talent for sure.

by Fabio Broncos on Jan 17, 2012 9:38 PM MST up reply actions

At the safety position the only "sure" thing is Quinton Carter.

Dawkins is iffy, as is McCarthy, Bush and Moore. Bruton should not be penciled in as a starter.

At CB Champ, Goodman and Harris are the only acceptable starters. Goodman may not even be acceptable anymore. Vaughn, Squid, Wilhite, and tony carter remain. Most those guys are undersized so I doubt all will remain. Squid should stay because his play-making ability. Vaughn is up and down while Wilhite shouldn’t be around. I like Tony Carter but he is more of a patch work guy and doesn’t offer much upside. He is also undersized.

by ShyandObese on Jan 17, 2012 10:36 PM MST up reply actions

Cassius Vaughn may be up and down as a DB

But he was fantastic on ST. By his ST play alone, he garners a roster spot in my opinion.

by Kwon on Jan 18, 2012 12:50 PM MST up reply actions

He is okay as a returner but we have too many guys that are on the rostor for special teams

Squid- Returner, gunner and nickel*
Chris Harris (starter)- Excellent gunner, nickel*
Bruton- Excellent gunner. Depth safety
Woodyard(starter in nickel packages)- Excellent ST, depth LB*
Vaughn- returner, depth CB

The team needs to decide how to progress because we need more guys who can contribute both in injury situations and consistently on special teams. Vaughn looks more like a good ST than a good CB right now. I like the guy but we need more productive guys like Squid and Harris at the CB position (except bigger).

by ShyandObese on Jan 18, 2012 3:26 PM MST up reply actions

They have 5 that can play, 3 will be over 34 by the opener.

by Pigskin on Jan 18, 2012 5:13 AM MST up reply actions

Oops…overlooked Syd’quan. So they have all of four guys that can even factor circa ’14.

by Pigskin on Jan 18, 2012 5:19 AM MST up reply actions

No they're not Brian

and I think what you’re trying to say is we should be looking to FA instead for a CB to replace Goodman. This is what I feel also. We shouldn’t even be looking at more young DBs right now. We need a better vet than Goodman through FA and that’s about it IMO.

If he is there then yes

Here is what CBS draft rankings have to say about him

Intangibles: Well-liked teammate who got the nickname “Swag” for his quiet but confident demeanor; referred to Texas as not having “swagger” during his college announcement press conference. Likes to talk on the field to teammates and get the crowd involved when at home. Praised for his strong will and work ethic. Won the team’s Bart Starr Most Improved Player Award in the spring of 2011.

This seems an isolated incident to me from a guy who would make the Broncos a better team. However I dont think he will drop.

Two words.

Chase Minnifield.

Dude will end up best CB of draft. All around baller solid in all modes of coverage and willing and outstanding in support. He’ll be there.

Denver could draft 4 DBs and I’d be okay.

by Pigskin on Jan 18, 2012 5:06 AM MST reply actions

You under estimate the significance of the pass rush.

Unless we make significant moves in FA upfront… drafting 4 DBs in one draft will just give us a bunch of bench players that get confused in coverage when we play good teams.

by Triz06 on Jan 18, 2012 5:36 AM MST up reply actions

Denver DBs...

…we’re worthless after 1 second against NE and most other teams. They have premier pass rushers in Miller and Doom, a great blitzer in Williams, and an emerging disrupter in Ayers, yet none had a chance to even factor at times because the secondary was putrid. When you are still that bad with Champ Bailey taking away a guy/portion of the field, it speaks volumes about the abject dearth of talent in the unit.

by Pigskin on Jan 18, 2012 5:51 AM MST up reply actions

Denver DBs

Our pass rush is decent, but Von miller is undersized for a DE. a decent OT and a chip from a TE can usually throw him off his game. And williams is an ok blitzer, but he is also one of our best cover LBs. So its pick your poison.

Also… many of the issues we have aren’t secondary related. Our linebackers dont cover very well as a unit and the aggressiveness of our ends leave us wideopen to 30 yard screens at times.

So while we need help in the secondary…. 4 rookies taken in 1 draft… probably won’t do it and if 2-3 work out… it will take a few seasons… like it usually does for corners. Most dont come right in and make a huge impact. But in a few seasons when we have the best secondary in the league… guys like Ayers and DJ might be cap casualties… or leave for greener pastures. And we’d have no depth at those positions.

by Triz06 on Jan 18, 2012 9:07 AM MST up reply actions

you are discounting the effects

of not having any push up the middle what so ever. Not having DT’s that can push the pocket back or a MLB that can be a threat to blitz makes good passing teams that much better because all they ahve to do is push our outside rushers out and step up in the HUGE pocket. Go back and watch the game. Our DT’s on pass plays stood up and chicken fought, Did not penetrate one bit.

by kimbertr on Jan 18, 2012 10:49 AM MST up reply actions

Agreed

If we can add a pass rusher in the middle Von and Dumervil will be even more effective.

I was (and still hold some hope) hoping with all my heart

That Rahim Moore would turn out to be a well deserved career Bronco.

Ever since We drafted him and one of the first things he said was “I’m going to be a Bronco forever!!” and sincerely meant it, that kind of attitude makes it so I’ll always have his back. I’m sure he’s more than well aware that he needs to bulk up if he expects to make it in this league though.

Whoever it is that steps up next season, I hope they put Deion Sanders’ name to shame with some Goose Gonsulin-like reminiscent action on the field. And consistently. We need a turnover machine for a Defense.

He should be working out with/shadowing Champ Bailey all off season. Just like Tebow working with Elway.

That

and he definitely needs to put on some muscle/weight. I still got high hopes for the kid (they were quite a bit higher, but I’ve had to temper my expectations for him after the season he’s had, starting, being pulled back to backup, etc. – a lot more inconsistent than I anticipated). And yes, please Rahim, learn how to tackle from someone who knows how. I can’t help but wonder just how many seasons Champ’s got left in the tank. I really hope We can get him at least a ring before he’s outta gas.

According to the link

It says less than 20 grams. 20 grams is .705oz. In my state if you are caught with over an 1 oz, you run the risk of being charged with intent to distribute depending on how much over 1 oz.

If it is less than 1 oz then it is a possession charge.
