A Study of Denver's 2011 Season
Denver finished the season tied for 13th in the NFL with an 8-8 record. They won the AFC West and won their first playoff game since 2005 and lost to the number one seed New England Patriots in the Divisional Round.
While many Broncos fans are a disappointed with the end result, the team did what few thought was possible after a 4-12 season and a new head coach.
I will take a look at how Denver performed in many key areas that I study on my website (thequeue.webs.com).
OFFENSE
- Scoring: Denver's offense averaged 17.1 PPG, 26th in the NFL. Much of this was due to Tim Tebow's first year as a starting quarterback (more on him later).
- Yards Per Touchdown: 129.4, 24th in the NFL. This stat means Denver traveled almost 130 yards before scoring 7 points. To put this is perspective, Green Bay (1st in NFL) only had to travel about 89 yards before scoring 7 points. The league median was about 116.0 yards.
- Plays Per Touchdown: 25.98, 26th in the NFL. This stat means Denver had to run about 26 plays before scoring 7 points. To put this is perspective, Green Bay (1st in NFL) only needed to run 13.53 plays before scoring 7 points. The league median was about 21.5 plays per touchdown.
- Third and Fourth Down Conversion: 30.40%, 31st in the NFL. This stat keeps track of fourth down conversions as well and adds the both attempts and conversions to the third down totals to get a percentage. This percentage perfectly illustrates how much Fox, McCoy and Tebow struggled to find any time of rhythm during the season without training camp and preseason to prepare. This explains why Denver was so good one week or quarter and so poor the next.
- Negative Plays: 15.83, 16th in the NFL. Denver allowed a sack, tackle for loss or a QB hit on 17.3 percent of their offensive plays. At times, Denver's offensive line and Tebow played very well and limited mistakes. However, the mistakes occurred in bunches, like both games against New England. While this is a respectable rating for such a young offense, Denver either played like the best team (New Orleans at 10.99) or the worst team (St. Louis at 23.08). The most important thing for this offense is experience in order to play more consistently.
- Quarterback Rating: 35.15, 20th in the NFL. This rating is new and incorporates rushing yards as well. The most important elements are touchdown percentage and turnover percentage, followed by accuracy, yards per attempt (throws + runs) and finally sacks allowed. Yes, Tim Tebow struggled as a quarterback, but he is definitely not the worst quarterback to ever play in the NFL, as some would have us believe. While his accuracy is certainly an issue, he still maintained a very good touchdown-turnover ratio. His struggles have more to do with him playing his first season than him being Tebow and all that entails to some individuals. While I expect him to improve, it won't be automatic and the Broncos offense as a whole needs to improve as well.
- Offense Unit Rating: 57.398, 22nd in the NFL. This rating includes quarterback rating, a rusher rating, 3rd and 4th down conversion success rate, and net offensive points (points scored by the opposing defense are subtracted from our offensive output). While not perfect, this rating does a good job measuring the best offensive teams. New Orleans was number one because of their balance in the running game and incredible success rate on third downs. Obviously for Denver, they have a lot of young players that were inconsistent and will need more playing time to become a more efficient group.
- Scoring: 21.2 PPG, 21st in the NFL. This again measures how many points opposing offenses scored on Denver's defense. This number is 6.4 PPG less than last season. Considering Denver was last in the NFL in 2010, this is a good improvement in just one year. The Broncos definitely benefited from the return of Dumervil and the additions of Miller, Harris and Bunkley. They will need to continue to add depth and talent this off-season through the draft and maybe free-agency.
- Yards Per Touchdown: 118.2, 15th in the NFL. Considering Denver was 30th in 2010 at 99.3, this is a good improvement in year one under Fox and Allen. Even though they struggled against the top quarterbacks (Stafford and Brady), they played well at times.
- Plays Per Touchdown: 21.95, 14th in the NFL. Again, there was a ton of improvement in this area. Denver gave up yards but was a considerably more efficient on defense than last year, an area they were 31st in the NFL, allowing opponents to score 7 points every 16.76 plays.
- Third and Fourth Down Conversion: 33.480, 5th in the NFL. If Tebow and the offense are going to be criticized for failing to convert third downs, the defense should be credited for doing a good job forcing punts and field goals. This is Denver's best ranking in the NFL in efficiency, by far. While teams did gain momentum and made tons of big plays at times, Denver came up with plenty of their own.
- Negative Plays: 17.5, 12th in the NFL. Denver forced a sack, tackle for loss or hit the quarterback on 19.3 percent of their plays. They would have been much higher, but Dumervil was just getting into shape about 5 or 6 games into the season and Von Miller suffered an injury with about 5 or 6 games to go in the regular season. However, that one third of the regular season they were healthy at the same time, Denver put a ton of pressure on the opposing offenses. Again, Denver will need more players to have a consistent impact on defense so these two don't have to play perfectly every week.
- Quarterback Rating: 53.28, 27th in the NFL. This number just confirms what our eyes, saw - our secondary is either young and inexperienced or old, injured and/or slow too often. Opposing quarterbacks often took advantage of this when Von Doom, Dawkins or DJ Williams were unable to apply pressure. With Syd' Quan Thompson recovering from injury and the much needed playing time for Rahim Moore, Chris Harris and Quincy Carter, this young secondary will hopefully continue to grow this off-season. Andre Goodman was picked on all year, but he wasn't the only one who struggled. Denver's entire secondary will need to improve. Denver also will need to do a better job pressuring the quarterback from the front-four. While Thomas and Bunkley did a good job defending the run, some times there was no push on the interior of the defensive line. This is the other area that needs to be addressed in some way by EFX.
- Defense Unit Ranking: 63.048, 19th in the NFL. While Denver was efficient in some ways, they struggled as a whole, especially against the better offensive teams they faced. The Broncos can take pride in the fact they were the last ranked team in 2010 in this defensive rating. Denver performed well on third downs and against the run, but again, will need to improve in pass defense before they can become a good defense on a consistent basis.
NFL ranking in parentheses.
- Net Yards Per Touchdown: -11.2 (21st)
- Net Plays Per Touchdown: -4.0 (24th)
- Net Quarterback Rating: -18.13 (27th)
- Net Points: -40.5 (23rd)
- Net Turnovers: -6.0 (26th)
- Miscellaneous: 22.0 (28th) This averages NFL rankings in turnovers, penalties and net third/fourth down conversions.
- Net Unit Rating: -5.650 (21st)
- Team Efficiency: 76.45 (25th)
While many of the losses were because of Tebow and the rest of Denver's young offense, they also won games because of his efforts and leadership.
This team is headed in the right direction after going 4-12 in 2010. It is now up to EFX to continue laying a solid foundation and building a strong team that can compete with the best teams and even win some of the big games.
If you have any questions about these statistics, please let me know. You can view all of the ratings for every team at thequeue.webs.com.

I voted secondary
but would have voted middle linebacker if it was an option. If we get a guy that can both stuff the run and cover tight ends, it will be huge for the defense. It’s the single postition that will do the most to help our defense. Yes, we need improvement at Safety and CB, but I feel the talent at those potitions can only be increased so much, while the MLB position can be improved by a big margin.
I feel our secondary will be improved with Carter and Morris having gotten playing time to adjust to the NFL speed. Harris will improve and may even get bumped into the #2 CB slot, but if not we’ve got Cass Vaughn and Sid Thompson coming back both of which were showing promise before going down to injury. Our nickel CB is STACKED. Now we just need one or two of these guys to make the transition to starting CB. Right now one of these guys needs to be a starting CB and in a couple of years, one of these guys is going to have to take over for Bailey unless we are able to draft or trade for a franchise CB, which I don’t see happening.
GO BRONCOS!!!
You know, everyone in Bronco Country has talked for years about finding the next Elway.
How about finding the next Steve Atwater?? I would love to get an Atwater clone in here, a guy with linebacker size and DB speed who loves to hit. Can we please find a guy who can hit D-Mac and knock him the f@&! out like Atwater on Okoye?

get strong up the middle
i was thinking the same thing but at middle linebacker. we need a hard hitting mlb. we need to get stronger up the middle dt, mlb, s. I miss Al Wilson!!!

Voted DT but strong up the middle is correct...
We need DT MLB and safeties
He who is good at at making excuses is seldom good at anything else
We haven't been able to cover the TE in Years!
I remember always screaming at the TV when Gates and Gonzalez would burn us twice in one year! It was always back breaking to watch the TE catch the ball and go for 13+ yards before being touched. And the two TE’s for New England were no different!
Next year will be another tough year covering the TE with Moeaki (sp?) back for KC. Hopefully we can address this in the draft/free agency this off season.
I know that always baffled me
We played the 2 best TE’s in the league twice a year and didn’t do a great job game planning for it.
Yeah, there needs to be an "All of the above" selection.
Though the intent of the poll might be “which area should EFX focus on most?” And in that case, I selected D-line.
D line is key
I think interior defensive lineman that can pressure the qb by collapsing the pocket is our biggest need. I really think we need to look at the NYG defensive line blueprint. On passing downs they have 4 penetrating DE’s attacking the qb, and 7 in coverage. We really need to find more pressure from our D-line, which will improve our entire D.
A close second is more consistent safety play. If we can accomplish those two, and get some imporovement from Tebow in the passing game I think we will compete for AFC west again next year. If not, we could have some struggles next year.

I agree with this.
Although, I think the safety position isn’t as important as CB2. Carter has showed flashes of good, but Goody has been annihilated this season on a regular basis. Minus the few opportune picks, he’s just not as much of a cover corner as you need.
Don't forget about Vickerson and Warren.
just because they are hurt, doesn’t mean they aren’t good anymore. I just think between them and Thomas and Bunkley, we will be set at DT. Although you can never have too many good DTs or DEs.
Playoffs!?!? Playoffs!?!? Don't talk about Playoffs!! Playoffs?!?!
MLB!
I’m on the fix the MLB postion first wagon.
DT’s on our team:
Bunkly
Thomas
Vickerson
Warren
As long as they’re healthy, that’s a good crop. One or two young players to back up and learn and we’ll be ok at this position.
GO BRONCOS!!!
Vickerson
came to camp light for some unknown reason. Warren may never be what he was. Thomas and Bunkley are FAs. You’re right IF all 4 come back we’re sitting pretty decent with one more young guy. I don’t think they will. We will know on Bunkley and Thomas before all else, because we can sign our own guys now.

I would like to see Big Vick be big Vick not a 285 undertackle they tried to make out of him.
Win, lose or draw, we are the Denver Broncos! 13-3 Baby!!! Until we ain't!
They do not get a push though
that killed us in games with a good QB and tackles. They just stand up and create a wonderful pocket to step into and throw from. WE have got to get pressure up the middle. I do agree on the MLB. Very high on my list of priorities.
by kimbertr on Jan 18, 2012 4:06 PM MST up reply actions 1 recs
We never got to see
Warren and Vickerson together. When healthy Warren is a HUGE guy who can eat up space and take up two defenders. Vickerson could be freed up to push the middle of the pocket. The key to this is health. Can they both come back and play at a high level? This will be key to our DL next season.
".....Im the waiting beast....Im the twisted nerve..."
The two weakest links on defense
were easy to spot. MLB and weak side CB. #3 is just as easy. Pass rush from the middle of the DL. How to fix it?

Thanks for putting this together. :)
When they were good, they were awesome, when they were bad, they were putrid
they were better than worst most of the time, that is why their numbers dont match the games won, they are a very young team, and an incosistent team. that is what young teams are, they show flashes of brilliance, they are going to improve and be a dangerous team.

All of the above.
I would rank the positions of need as:
1. Safety
2. MLB
3. DT
4. CB
5. RB
6. LG (or RT and push Franklin into his natural guard position)
Clearly I feel the middle of the field from the D-line to the Secondary needs improvement. I could be talked into switching some around but I feel that those are the teams 6 biggest needs.
I am a fan of a team in the NBA, MLB, NHL, and NFL. I haven't seen the playoffs since April 28th, 2008 (1st round exit by raps). I haven't seen playoffs past the 1st round since January 26th, 2006. Stop and think about how insane it is. And depressing.
Safety I think should be addressed in free agency.
In the draft Safey is again weak. It would be a wasted pick if the bronocs got another safety. All the broncos need is a a good veteran safety and they’ll be fine. The same can be said about MLB only because the best MLB will be gone by the time the broncos pick. The only way I’m taking Buffict is in the second round.
Other than that, the broncos can get the rest through the draft. Both CB and RB are strong in this class, EFX can easily fix those spots. Also the DTs aren’t too bad, but better than what will be there in free agency.

agreed on trying to find a safety in FA.
Mark Barron is the highest rated safety and he doesn’t strike me as that much of an upgrade over what we have now.

I agree with your positions of need. I would change the priority to:
1) SS (I see good upside with Carter at FS)
2) MLB (Flawed fundamentals in tackling cost many big plays)
3) CB (Harris could change my mind. Goody is a liability when he has to make a tackle)
4) LG (Beadles has upside, but a upgrade would help a lot)
5) RB (Need a guy to take the load off of McGahee’s shoulders)
6) DT (ranked higher if we don’t bring back Bunkley and Thomas. Could use a consistent penetrating DT, but those are hard to find.)

good point on the DT.
Bunkely was great and Thomas and the others at the spot performed admirably especially against the run. I think I’m still focusing in too much on the pats loss where we generated zero pressure up the middle with those guys and it was so frustrating. But the Suhs and Fairleys are hard to come by.

I agree that EFX should always be on the lookout for guys who can disrupt in the middle. We really haven’t had one of those guys here since Trevor Pryce left. Vickerson could have been a cheap version of that before he found weight watchers. Those 40 pounds he dropped were pretty noticeable.

Quintin Carter will eventually be our Strong Safety. He doesn't possess the speed we need for a Free Safety.
Rahim Moore may or may not be that guy, but for now I would at least acquire a veteran to play until we find out.

You guys remember Nate Irving is on the roster right?
Why is everyone giving up on him?
2011 was just the tip
They say the cool is all over me..
Not giving up on Nate
just haven’t seen anything to say he’s the guy. If he steps up this offseason and replaces Mays and the MLB becomes a position of strength then great. Right now though, it is our defense’s biggest weakness. It also happens to be the heart of any defense which is not a good position to be weak at.
GO BRONCOS!!!
I have not given up
but even at his worst he should have been able to make it to the field periodically as bad as Mays played.
He was on the field for special teams. That's all you can really ask for in a third round pick.
It’s like kind of like saying Orton was bad last year and needed to be replaced by Tebow. The only reason why Tebow got a shot was because Orton got hurt. I see the samething in Irving. Why force a guy into a starting lineup when he can sit for a year and develope? Not many third round picks at MLB start their rookie year unless there is an injury.
by tiderfootball09 on Jan 18, 2012 8:30 PM MST up reply actions
This is true
you have to rely upon the best option available, this past season would not have gone on so propitiously had Orton remained in the lineup. Who cares if KC beat us in Week 17? That Raiders game, wherein he choked, cooked his goose, losing at home in December, that’s not a traditional Chiefs trait…

He was the very first MLB drafted
If we were so willing to draft the first at his position, we should have had the confidence to play him.
Colin McCarthy played the last half of the season and got 70 tackles
Kelvin Shepard got nine starts and got 70 tackles
Joe Mays played all 16 games and got 70 tackles and our rookie MLB who is supposedly better than the above two didn’t do squat.
Add one more rookie MLB
Mason Foster (drafted 10 or so picks after Irving) started most of the season and got 84 tackles
I’m not saying Irving is a complete bust but he is very very close.
I'm giving up on him
He should have been able to force a little playing time later in the season. Not necessarily a start but something. He didn’t. That’s a real problem for someone at his draft slot.
yea and how much of that is coaches? Some never look beyond starters.

MLB is the shot caller of the D
With a rookie coming into this season with out an off season to learn? The lock out really hurt the rookies the most, and I will wait to pass judgement on “bust” or “not bust” until they actually have OTAS and a TC. Learning a Pro Defense on the fly with weekly changes in game plan / schemes is hard enough for veterans to keep up let alone someone who has never taken an NFL snap :)

Still doesn't change my point of view.
I will still reserve my judgement until the end of next season. I’m patient that way :) I enjoy watching young players make strides and this season we saw a few rookies step up and perform way above their expectations. And of course we saw what happens when a rookies are forced into the line up too early. Perfect example: the stats above regarding our secondary, a lot of that has to do with blown assignments by our rookie safeties.
".....Im the waiting beast....Im the twisted nerve..."
Oh I am with you on that
I love watching the young guys move up. The Harris story is one of my favorite parts of this year. When they use to have camp in Greeley I loved watching to see who that mysterious player that would be the 5th receiver or last corner to make the team.
I agree. People have to remember, the MLB is like the QB of the defense.
You just don’t throw a third round pick into the starting lineup. This isn’t a video game. It’s easy for us to say, “well Mays sucks, why he isn’t Irving playing?” Like you said, Irving had no offseason. I have a hard time giving up on someone when they haven’t had an offseason. Not to mention they experienced a lockout. I’m with you that I’m patient about this process and thankfully the coaches are too.

I'm not ready to give up but Mays played pretty poorly
Especially down the stretch and I was shocked at how little Irving played. This offseason will show how much EFX think of Mays/Irving and from what I’ve seen out of Mays I hope we seriously consider an upgrade.

I don't think anybodies given up on him yet, but most are frustrated with the MLBer play.
Hoping he’ll be a great talent is still an unknown and challenged to ever be. I do feel Nate will progress over the offseason, but how good he’ll be is an unknown, I would hedge my bets on him with either a FA or draftee though.
Win, lose or draw, we are the Denver Broncos! 13-3 Baby!!! Until we ain't!
On your number 6 need, I would go with getting a guard.
Moving Franklin to a guard spot would put too much height on the interior of the line. We would start seeing passes hitting off his helmet, and a large number of those types of passes that are deflected into the air are picked off. The risk would outweigh the reward of this move I think.

It is between RB and CB . . .
Would love to see a good CB join the team to allow Champ to go to FS . . . not because of Champ’s age, but because I believe his extreme athleticism and leadership is being wasted while he covers one man or one side of the field. At safety, he would cover the entire opposing team and all of the field. I believe the defense would improve dramatically with him back there.
If CB is 1a, then RB has to be 1b, IMO. Even were McGahee young, two good RBs are needed. We have seen first hand what can happen with all the hits a RB endures. It would be great to get one that is a load like McGahee is but with the speed to hit a home run once in a while. If they could do that and then get smart enough to use Royal in a McCluster/Sproles capacity, that would be one dangerous offense, IMO.
I love my wife.

Honestly
The Broncos could improve just about every position on the roster except maybe OLB (Miller), DE (Doom, but need two), CB (Bailey, but again, need two top CB’s, not just one). What position would improve our defense the most in a singular way? MLB! It’s by far our defense’s weakest link.
On Offense, you’re probably right, RB is the one position we need improvement on above the others (except maybe QB, but our guy is gonna work on that). McGahee is getting old and his injuries this season showed that.
GO BRONCOS!!!
To be frank, I think there is one need on offense as big as RB, maybe bigger.
A playmaking TE. We need a TE who is a consistent, dangerous threat in the passing game. This is almost as important in today’s NFL (especially for a young QB) as a good running game.

I do like Fells.
But he doesn’t create alot of mismatches. That is what I would really like to see out of the TE spot.

I could always tell when the broncos would win because they actually got Fells invloved.
The games where the broncos lost he usually was not invloved. Same thing with Rossario. Those two made some clutch catches.

We have no idea
if any of our TE’s can be that guy because we do not use them other than to be an extra lineman.
Not necessarily
It depends on the scheme. Some OC’s like TE’s, some don’t. Belicheck and Co. have adapted their offense to the talent they have, which happens to be TE’s. That’s really the sign of a good coach, kind of like what Fox did with Tebow. Three years ago, you wouldn’t look at the Patriots offense and think they’re a TE passing team. It’s the stubborn coaches that refuse to use the talent they have because they don’t fit their scheme, ala McD.
Back on subject, that’s not saying we wouldn’t like to use TE’s, so yes, you could be right. I think the rooks we got need another season of evaluation, kinda like our safeties. They were thrown into the fire and got burned, but maybe they’ll come out stronger next season for it.
GO BRONCOS!!!
McGahee
never should have been a number one back.. I would love to see him for another couple of years as the relief guy. He would be great for short yardage and breather duty !
Go Broncos!

Lance Ball...
This guy just kept coming up – - I recall thinking that he and Hall were about the same…BAD, then he inexplicably made the team, and moved into a daily role as Moreno faded (injury, I know).
Everytime I see him on the field, I give my TV an earful. “what the hell is Ball doing in the game?”. I really think he’s awful. Drops, poor vision, lack of burst to the hole, one tackler tackled all the time, low top end speed….must I go on? Give it to Liver Eatin Johnson for Christ’s sake – - at least he has some speed!
if it be not now, yet it will come: the readiness is all. - -Shakespeare
What Ball has going for him is he stays fairly healthy...I think we could do better soemwhere else if they wanted to.
No way in hades does Willis McGahee need to be the featured back and with Knownshon Moreno being basically a 3rd down back we really need a power/featured back from the draft and a powerback to compete with Ball and Johnson for the 3rd or 4th back. Let’s not forget Mario Fannin is a strong little dude and he can stay healthy and learn how to hang on to the ball he might be a good find…
Win, lose or draw, we are the Denver Broncos! 13-3 Baby!!! Until we ain't!
I've never seen "debacle" used as a verb...

To be honest with you the only viable option on the poll is "other"...
Every position on or team needs some revamping from the OLine to the DLine on down. Some positions more than others but all the same, the is still a lot of work for EFX to do.
OLine: I thought that signing Ryan Harris at RT for a multi year deal was a good move as we need some solid backups. Out of the backups we have only Chris Clark and Russ Hochstein have shown they possess NFL skills. Right now I hope EFX docus on the Guard position with an acquistion from FA or the draft. I believe Chris Kuper will be healed in time for Training Camp, but we still need depth. A offseason with the OLine all together except for Kuper is a plus and they should show growth in development by the end of TC…
DLine: I thought the acquistion of Broderick Bunkley was a sound move and dividends were rewarded from it. He is a solid contributor but doesn’t possess to much push on the OLine he is mainly a plugger. Kevin Vickerson was a disappointment after coming back to TC 25-35 lbs under his weight. I’m not sure what they will do with him moving forward, and to be frank about it, I don’t care one way or another. Marcus Thomas was a solid contributor as like Bunkley, but has very little pass rushing abilities. I would try to re-sign those two. Ryan McBean has shown some progression this year over the last few years, but slid some in the end and reverted back to commiting terrible penalties. Since he had progression I would keep him around as a backup and imo has shown more pass rushing skills than either Thomas or Bunkley, but nothing to shout about. That’s 3 DTs we should keep. Mitch Unrein is still too young to really assess and maybe he stays to go back to the PS, I wouldn’t hold a active roster spot fpor though, he was a stop gap when Vickerson and Ty Warren went down. Speaking of Ty Warren. When he was healthy he was a beast and that was before his first injury epesode began in ‘09. Whether he will be a contributing factor is unknown, but worth clinging some hope to. Sealiver Siliga is an unkown on the PS. EFX will study this group and let’s hope they feel they need a pass rushing specialist at DT. Jared Crick? Derek Wolfe? That crazy Bosnian that I forget his name? Name one…
DE: Elvis Dumervil is on an island all his own and having Von Miller up at the line severely hurts the physicality of the left end. I think Fox/Allen used Miller alot because basically that’s all we had for pass rushing on that side. Robert Ayers is turning out to be a pretty good football player, but he still lacks in the pass rushing department and always will. I think he would be better suited as an undertackle and an end on run downs. Spend the money on this position and let Von Miller do his job at SOLB. Mario Williams may come available shortly and also there are a few in the draft like Coples, Mercilus, Cam Johnson, Andre Branche, Melvin Ingram and Nick Perry…Harvey and Hunter should be looking for work elsewhere. Jeremy Beal is an unknown at this time, but should be showing vast improvement over the off season or we could put him back on the shelf of PS for awhile.
The LBers position is pretty set on the edges with DJ Williams and Von Miller developing his skills. The MLB is the enigma for us right now because we know nothing but we know so much. Nate Irving may be that guy and need a solid offseason to prove it. Finding a great MLB is like finding a needle in the haystack, there aren’t that many 4/3 MLBs who are great and when a team get’s one, they don’t generally let them go if they can help it. Don’ta Hightower may be one, Vontaze Burfict may be another if Richard Smith can get his attention. After that the draft falls off like a ton of bricks with LBR talent. Forget about Kuechy unless you want to bankrupt the team for him.
Safety: this position is shouting from the rooftops for help. When Brian Dawkins talks about going down on his knees as listening to the Lords advice I really think he is sincere, but father time is a cruel character and always shows up before we want him to. That leaves us without veteran leadership and a solid centerfielder. We can’t count on Quintin Carter to be Dwkins-like over an offseason, that won’t happen, but I see the potential there. Rahim Moore has a lot of potential too, but the limited offseason severely hurt him as it showed. IMO those 2 are keepers though and let them develop into the players we need to start in the future, not now though. EFX have to race to the FA boards and ring the phones off the hooks for a solid veteran of BDawks caliber. Bruton and Bush will never be more than STs and backups. No need wasting another draft pick on this position he has to be a veteran.
CB: Champ and Goodman should be retained as starters along with Chris Harris as the slot/nickle. Draft a couple of pliers wielding boys with a blow torch and let them learn the craft from Goody and Champ…
That a huge to-do list and that is only the defensive side of the ball…Whew, do we have our work cut out.
Win, lose or draw, we are the Denver Broncos! 13-3 Baby!!! Until we ain't!
Goodman should be starting in the CFL. Not for the Broncos….
Sports don't build character, they reveal it
Believe me
other NFL teams had to start CBs much worse than Goodman this year. He wasn’t as bad of a cover CB as everyoine is making him sound like. We were lucky to have him healthy all year. He was our weakest link, but it was more of a product of the situation around him than him being a terrible player.

Yeah good lord he's not THAT bad
I think he’s average to tell the truth…he’s certainly no Nate Jones. Although I wouldnt be opposed to drafting a corner to develop under him and he sticks around a year or 2 more. Corners take time to develop. Strong Safety is where we are hurting and hurting bad

Very true. He won two games for the broncos this year.
He can bump and run with just about anyone. Against the steelers, he did a good job. One thing I disklike the most is how soft he is. He backs down whenever there is contact.

Defensive Line
Look no further than the New York Giants of the past 5 years to see the value of a potent D-Line. Especially with the orange unis coming back next year, gotta grab some crushers in the draft. Second is a beast middle linebacker. That position is the heart of the defense. Next I would go secondary. Finally, they really need to get some weapons on offense for Tebow. Running back, TE, WR, scat back… whatever. Honestly, Tebow didn’t have too many great weapons to work with this past season.
Sports don't build character, they reveal it
again
there are sufficient weapons available, let us use our draft picks wisely and go from there, plus, we should only make judicious decisions in free agency, the Redskins, unless they nab Peyton Manning somehow, have always shown what NOT to do.
