Realistic Mock Broncos Offseason 1.0
Ya so sorry about the format and lack of analysis up front. You guys can analyze it for what its worth im lazy ans its 3 am on the east coast. Pretty much the idea is adding more guys to help defend against the pass. I know all of you have been watching the Giants, I expect EFX to take off adding more skill around our core. On offense we have a lot of youth at o line and receiver so adding Carlson, Garcon and interior help from vets seems like a good route, they add solid competition. McClain is the kind of guy i really want to have and use him more than Kansas City. Some of my favorite guys in the league are ones that defenses have no answer for, Marcel Reese, Tolbert(would love to get him), Sproles, the 2010 TE class and you get it. I think McClain could present problems and pave big holes. Carlson can also add production while Julius and Green take more time to grow. So whatchya think?

My thoughts
I am reasonably certain our roster limit is 90 during the offseason. That said I doubt we let so many of our FA go, especially ones who played prominent roles during the season. It is not so much that I believe those guys will all make the 53 next season, but that they know are system, will likely be lower cost that bringing in outside guys, and they will be competetive.
I like your draft list and most of the FA list from other teams. However I am not big on Garrard. He seems like he was a bit of a problem guy in Jax and I don’t think we need that here. I really hope we resign Quinn, because he was no problem, just not sure if we will go for more read option types or pocket guys.
I'm with him^.
Re-sign any of our guys that will and then replace the ones that walk.
Quinn>Garrard
A couple of more things BffB. You need to edit this post. I had no idea what the heck you were talking about in the opening paragraph. It should’ve been below your list it turns out.
Also you have some weird language or something in your mock draft.

Garrard is not thought of as a "trouble maker" in JAX
In fact, he is thought of as one of the good guys. There was a dispute about when he was injured and who should have to pay for it between Garrard and the Jag FO. Another words a business dispute. The word was that Garrard and Gabbert had a positive relationship and that he was mentoring Gabbert. Inconsistency was the biggest issue with Garrard but he is used to playing in a run heavy offense and is one of the better running QBs in the NFL.
The problem with Garrard is that he couldn't keep his job over Blaine Gabbert.
He is not that good. If we sign a veteran running QB, I am all for picking up Dixon if we can get him.
Never let them see you bleed.

You call these FA signings as realistic dude? Really?
I mean, they are great players. But do you imagine the amount of money to land them all? No way EFX will look at free agency this way.

Garçon and Carlson will cost some money but McClain made just 1.5 mil last year on a 1 year deal and ruud and zbikowski are cheap.

Not bad
I would rather have Royal over Garcon mostly because Garcon is one of those guys who looked good because of Manning. Also Garrard has said he would like to start or have a chance to start where ever he goes, something he won’t get the chance to do in Denver. McClain would be an awesome addition, but at the same time, he would want a big contract for a FB and we’d only get a small boost in production. I would also rather sign a DT or MLB since Ruud isn’t really an upgrade over Mays, rather than a DE since DE is possibly our best position, especially with the good resigning of Hunter.
I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.
Garrard wants to start
I am not sure that is a realistic goal. Between the last back injury and his Crohn’s Disease, there are genuine health concerns which might have some bearing on how inconsistent he can play. Since he lived in JAX all during the years Tim played at UF, he is more aware then most exactly what Tebowmania entails. David is a pretty mellow guy and could probably handle being Tim’s back-up better that most.
Good points.

He is mellow
But he’s still fairly young, and would at least want the chance to compete for the starting job, that was one reason Del Rio gave for why he was let go. Would he be okay if he was a back up, sure, but he wouldn’t go out of his way in a FA market to go play as a back up when there are teams he could compete for the job.

HEARD IT FIRST HERE. BRONCOS TRADE OUT OF 1ST ROUND
Yep, trade #25 for a #2 and #3. Now that gives us 4 top 60 player to build with. AND if we can find a MCDANIELS type then we also get a #4.
Kreese and Lawrence will decide if Tim Tebow can develop into our future.
Bronco fan since 1966. Current biggest Bronco fan in Vegas, living the good life.
Actually 2 top 60 players DL since the 3rd rd starts at 64...
We now have #57 and if we trade back with someone that would be from #33-?

And sorry about the format I don’t know what happened with the mock. Also i think BQ will want a chance to compete as a starter somewhere else…garrard isn’t a definite like most of these players…they more just full a name of the type of players I want to bring in. This isn’t all that unrealistic either fabio…Carlos is off an acl tear too I believe.

Sign Matt Willis over Eddie Royal?
Releasing or not trying to resign Joe Mays over a guy who is on Injured Reserve (Jarrett Ruud)? Yikes. Maybe EFX will go after MLB Dan Conners of Carolina as I think head coach Rivera will eventually change to a 3/4 defense.
Win, lose or draw, we are the Denver Broncos! 13-3 Baby!!! Until we ain't!
Willis is a better run blocker
when he’s not holding
Alright i guess Ill address all the hate from u know it alls
1. Matt Willis is just as if not more efficient than Eddie Royal. Royal can not get off press coverage and is not a downfield threat (OMG he caught 1 long pass in the playoffs). Willis will be much cheaper and is not much worse of a player. As for Garcon he stretches the field much better than Eddie, he can catch the deep ball well and is arguably faster. And great arguement Topher because Garcon had arguably his best year this year with the worst quarterbacks throwing to him.
2. Joe Mays sucks. Why does anyone want this guy back, because he can lay the lumber once every game if hes lucky. The dude cant tackle and hes our MIKE. Thanks but no thanks. I think they have expectations for Irving and Ruud comes in to add depth and competition, hes a smaller fox type backer.
3. Garrard may not be a great choice i just think we need to sign a solid vet. BQ may want to leave if not I would take him back. Otherwise what other cheap vets can we get to help Tebow?
4. And enough with this being too costly. Le’ron Mcclain made 1.5 million last year, Ruud and Zbikowski can be signed for squat and Carlson is coming off a torn labrum that kept him out all year. Garcon will cost money but we need an explosive receiver thats not a rookie, we have plenty of young guys, build the D through the draft look how many starters on O we have already drafted. And Garza fits the same mold as Garrard just looking for a solid guard who can challange Beadles and possibly fill in for Kuper.
5. McBean sucks and Hochstein isnt good either. Fells is a FA and not needed with the addition of Carlson.
6. Any draft thoughts??

Hi BffB! Great post, BTW.
1) I agree with you entirely on this point. Eddie stays if he agrees to be a ST only guy and a 5th or 6th receiver.
2) Again, he is a special teams monster. I agree about Irving, but not so sure about Ruud. He’s good, but we’ll have to see how the injuries have affected him – he had a groin injury that sidelined him for the latter part of last season, and he will also need off-season shoulder surgery. With all those questions, I’d rather have a Dan Connor or Curtis Lofton.
3) I like Garrard for the vet position, but being that he was ousted as a starter, I think he’s going to want to be a starter. A perennial backup like Dixon makes more sense, IMO.
4) McClain made 1.5 last year, but that was a one-year guaranteed contract with KC. He is one of the best fullbacks in the game and will probably want a larger/longer contract I like Zbikowski, and I also like Garcon.
5) I agree. McBean had a couple of “a-ha” moments this year, but for the most part, he hasn’t been good. Hochstein got owned against the Pats.
6) Check out the mock ideas I have going here
Very good H...

2) Joe Mays sucks...
BffB, don’t get all butt hurt if Joe Mays is re-signed for another year, as that’s what might happen. Mays was rated a +10 by ProFootballFocus and they are a respected site for analysing players across the board. I don’t have a clue as to what EFX will do with their Linebacking corp, but there are upgrades to be made all across the back of the DLine imo. What I think is, coach Fox was disappointed with Nate Irving’s progressions during the season. Irving was nearly non-existent except on special teams play. The lack of Irving’s development can partly be to blame on the non-offseason and direction attention each new player (and older players) needed in the regimes new scheme/system. That doesn’t leave Joe mays out either as he had to translate from the 3/4 scheme from the year before to the 4/3 scheme with little hands on teaching of the system. Everything this last year was on the fly once the season started as coaches are preparing for the next game and have little time to focus on players technique at every position. Sure Joe Mays is lacking instincts and has difficulty reading opponents’ offenses, but I wouldn’t declare that he “sucks” by any means. What we see with the naked eye and unknowns of the whole picture on our defense, then only time will tell which players will be cut loose and which players EFX will try to retain. Does that make sense? Time will tell.

No need for that digger i wasnt addressing you nor could i understand your comment.
I love PFF but thats stright up garbage they rated Mays plus 10. Mays is god awful and its sad they could not recognize that. He had a few good games and makes his presence felt once in a while but i dont want him starting on this team next year. And Mays has plenty of experience in a 4-3 from college and with the Eagles.
Im convinced Irving didnt play because of the nature of the MLB position and the fact he is A. raw and B. a rookie. Fox has usually favored vets, and towards the end of the season when Mays was really sucking hard it wasnt worth the swtich at that position. But yea Mays does suck, I dont want to see Toby Gerhart, Isaac Redman and other backups running over our starting Mike backer. He cant cover, cant tackle that says enough. I expect us to sign a solid starter if Irving isnt ready or capable, because neither is Mays he is arguably the worst starter on our roster next to Beadles and maybe goody or S.

I'm currently in the process of researching for a post I want to write on John Fox's draft traits.
From what I’ve found so far, there are some interesting things to see. And, it might give us some clues of what positions we may draft.

I just sent you (via e-mail) the research that I did last year on Fox's draft while with the panthers.

My proposition
sign Guy Whimper….. entire team-wide problem solved. ;-)
"If you went to the Fair with this guy and you played that game where you have to throw the ball through the hole..... he may never get it through the hole, but he's still gonna be walking away with all the stuffed animals!" Prime's commentary on our very own Tim Tebow!!!

I’m with you on all resignings except Rosario. Fells is better than Rosario. Tebow had some success connecting with him. Oh, and Hunter is a marginal player, not really better than “Face Mask” McBean. We may resign him, but I don’t care if he is let go.
Hochstein may not be great, but he filled in nicely for the injured Kuper. It was a surprise, and a good one. Sure, he is getting old, but I’d keep him as a versatile backup.
Matt Willis is a poor route runner and not much of a WR. And Eddie is a better returner. However, I think Eddie wants to test the market and once he is allowed to, someone will overpay to get him, so I think he leaves.
Garcon, I think, is overrated.
Hunter is solid backup hopefully number 4 d end McBean is terrible. Despite his few sack he is one of the worst pass rushers and has untimely penalties.
I think Elway recognizes the way to win and beat the cream of the crop u need to defense the pass meaning d backs and pass rushers. Assuming players like Barron, Kirkpatrick, still and wright will be gone im all over trading back 5 spots or adding a pass rusher like merculis.
