Devon Still

Devon Still 2011 PSU football highlights (via ctodd1242)

No complaints from me

Here is the Walterfootball bit on him

http://walterfootball.com/draft2012DE3-4.php

Devon Still, DE/DT, Penn State
Height: 6-5. Weight: 311.
Projected 40 Time: 5.03.
Projected Round (2012): 1.

12/21/11: Still has had a superb senior season. He has been a playmaker and the leader of the Penn State defense. Still posesses good size, surprising speed and real power. He played Alabama tough early this season. For the season, Still has 55 tackles with 17 tackles for a loss, 4.5 sacks, a pass batted away and a forced fumble. Penn State's last two regular season games, against Ohio State and Wisconsin, were his worst showings of the year, but he'll get a chance to show his pass rushing skills against Houston on January 2nd.

Entering the NFL, Still has an excellent combination of power, speed and athleticism. He beats offensive linemen with strength as well as quickness. Still has the versatility to play the three technique or nose tackle in a 4-3 defense. He also could be a 3-4 defensive end.

8/21/11: Devon Still had a strong 2010 season with 10 tackles for a loss and four sacks. He saw frequent double teams, and still was a difference maker for Penn State. As a sophomore, Still had 5.5 tackles for a loss and two sacks. He has scheme flexibility and could fit a 3-4 or a 4-3 defense.

If we get the opportunity to draft Still the Broncos should not hesitate. I will be shocked if he makes it to #25, but I guess people were saying similar things about Bowers last year. IMO he is the complete package at DT and is the best at his position this year.

anything can happen from now until the draft

who knows, maybe luck falls out of the top ten for some unforeseen reason, in every draft there are always those that rise and those that fall.

Top 15 talent for sure

a 3-4 DE or 4-3 DT, He’ll be gone

The real question is what does EFX do if

Michael Brockers is still on the board? Would they ignore the DT position again this year?

BPA

People need to realize that we are shifting to a more BPA approach. If there’s a DE who’s projected better than a DT, they will get the DE.

By the time the draft comes around it wouldnt surprise me if he is a top 10 pick.

the thing I really like about drafting where we are

is that some talent like this will almost inevitably fall. Personally, I’d prefer to be drafting ahead of the Steelers because they always scarf up that sort of player. Of course, I’m happy knowing why we are drafting after the Steelers.

Long Stepper

I was listening to Al Williams today and he was talking about defensive lineman. He called Still, and the guy from Michigan State “long steppers.” I didn’t really catch all of his comments, but I think the gist of his comments were that a long stepper looses a lot of leverage, and will struggle at the NFL level. His take is the DT out of Clemson, Brandon Thompson, has the type of technique that can be sucessful right away in the NFL. Not sure how accurate he is, but I’ll go with Al, and say we should shoot for the Clemson guy with our #1 pick.

by brettden on Jan 23, 2012 9:08 PM MST reply actions

I don't see anything special from Still do maybe Al is right.

He just doesn’t stand out to me. On the other hand Alameda Taamu is big and stood out to me. Almost no one can handle him by themselves. Looks a lot like Haloti Ngata (although that may be a little optimistic)

A couple more realistic mocks have us selecting Poe (if we go DT first round)

I say realistic because like the comments have suggested, Still may not still be there by the time we select. They say Poe is raw but will impress at the combine, I cant wait for this to all go down! thanks for posting, keep the mocks coming MHR community!

Devon Still will be gone way before we pick...

25 th pick

If they go D Tackle at this slot I would Rather Have 1. Michael Brockers but he should be gone 2 D. Poe 3. Fletcher Cox .
While all three of these guys are younger and are raw I think they have more upside and will be better players two years down the road than Still or Thompson .

by ultraclassic04 on Jan 24, 2012 5:45 AM MST reply actions

Everyone always has the broncos picking a DT in the first. I will believe it when I see it.

In general that holds true about the entire draft. I still think they either go to free agency for another one or keep what they have.

I haven't seen this guy dropping to us at all

he is top 15 and normally going to Seattle by all the mocks I have seen. I think Vontaze should be the pick, get a big man in the second. if Burifect is good enough to be on Baltimore’s radar as the SUCCESSOR to RAY FREAKIN LEWIS, I say we draft him and make him the successor to Al Wilson that we have been begging for.

MLB in a 3-4 is a slightly different mold than in 4-3.

Bigger LBs that aren’t good in coverage can be successful in a 3-4; 4-3 requires a bit more versatility at the position. That’s precisely why I don’t think Burfict would fit well with the Broncos system.

by H-bizzle on Jan 24, 2012 11:34 AM MST up reply actions

gettin a new coordinator anyway.

trust me you make a guy like that fit your system. and before you say we can’t do that see tim tebow…

by graff_stuff690 on Jan 24, 2012 10:03 PM MST up reply actions

The thing is we have good run-blocking.

That’s the only reason we’ve been able to mold around Tebow — the other pieces of the puzzle worked with the change. We currently have 4-3 personnel on defense, and getting a defensive signal-caller from a 3-4 might not be as easy.

Not saying it can’t be done, but there are plenty of MLB’ers in this year’s FA and draft that might require less of an adjustment and make just as immediate an impact.

Not Sure If He's There at Pick 25

If he is, he would be an unreal pocket collapsing 5-technique defensive tackle. He’d make Elvis Dumervil, Von Miller, and Robert Ayers all the better.

by RSH089 on Jan 24, 2012 9:46 AM MST reply actions

Oops

Meant a 3-technique defensive tackle.

by RSH089 on Jan 24, 2012 9:56 AM MST up reply actions

He played possibly the best Defensive football in the country

besides maybe Claiborne. I’m slightly concerned about the whole “1 year wonder” thing but at 25 I’d be thrilled.

However, as some people here have said, I don’t think he’ll be available at 25

C'mon, join us, there's plenty of koolaid on the Broncos bandwagon for everyone!

Andrew Mason is saying DT Brandon Thompson would be a better fit for Denver, but of course Still isn't playing Saturday because of an injured toe...

I was a little impressed with Derek Wolfe and Mike Martin today at the North’s practice. I gotta love a big kid (Derek Wolfe) with tatoos streaming down his massive arms and the demeanor he shows.

I'd Be All For More Nasty on Defense

Robert Ayers has some saltiness to him, but we could use another enforcer or two on defense—particularly at DT and MLB. Joe Mays doesn’t count, because you have to be nasty and good, and Mays misses far too many tackles to be considered good. :-)

This would make me happy

I'm not a big fan of picking a DT in the 1st round

To me, unless you have a guy like Suh, the prospects of a 1st round DT prospect making an impact their first year is pretty slim. I want Hightower out of Bama, I think he will have a bigger impact his first season, I think we can get DT prospects 2nd and 3rd round who we can groom. I am also weary of Penn State lineman, they have a high bust rate, I can’t remember the last Penn State guy who actually lived up to the hype.

I like Hightower too

But I doubt he gets past the Steelers; they desperately need youth at LB and Hightower fits perfectly.

Marcel Dareus is not Suh

And he made an outstanding impact on the Bills D. I’m not saying I’d prefer him over Miller… I think EFX made the right choice! However, a DT doesn’t need to be named Suh to make a huge impact. Devon Still is not Suh or even Dareus, but can make some impact here.

Anyway, I’d like to grab Dennard, if available. My BPA (in position of need) would be: Dennard, Still, Miller.

He may not even go in the first round anymore

He's got a couple of things going against him

He was beaten by Alshon Jeffery before getting ejected for fighting with Jeffery. Then he measured in at 5’10" at the Senior Bowl when teams are looking for taller corners who match up better with the bigger WR’s.

Here’s an interesting quote about his ability to turn his hips or lack there of:

“Alfonzo Dennard hasn’t looked like a first-round pick in any way so far. Fine when action is in front but can’t turn and run.” – Scott Wright from DraftCountdown.com
