Adam Schefter Denver hired Jack Del Rio as its defensive coordinator.

The Denver Broncos have hired former Jacksonville Jaguars Head Coach Jack Del Rio as their new Defensive Coordinator. This news comes shortly after Dennis Allen was chosen as the Head Coach of the Oakland Raiders. The defensive coordinator vacancy certainly didn't stay open for very long.

We upgraded at D-Coordinator this year…
Jacksonville’s defense has always been great (and played the Broncos tough), here’s to Del Rio’s game planning being infinitely better than Allen’s (Who I hate now that he works for the Raiders).

Allen might be a better Head Coach, but Del Rio is a better DC
Finally we get an experienced DC who has a great track record He was fox’s DC at carolina in 02, and his D was 2nd best in the land and only gave up 18.9 PPG.
Now he inherits, VonDoom, Champ and a young D. Lets hope this mans intensity carries over to the defensive side of the ball
Elway said he wants one side of the ball to be great, looks like we want a great defense.
Also Del Rio will be here for awhile. He wasnt great at Jax so i doubt many teams will pick him over some other candidates

Wow, i was just about to post why i think we shouldn’t hire him. Oh well, he’s a great defensive mind who i think we’ll give the Broncos a top 10 Defense next year. But, we’ll be on DC #8 next year.

But i think that sentence is wrong. He just wasn’t successful enough as HC to deserve another chance.
There’s been quite a few head coaches in history who have been given a second chance with a good performance as a coordinator (Romeo Crenell for instance). I do hope i’m wrong, because if he stays for a few years, i LOVE this hire. If he leaves like Allen did, i’m disappointed. Once again, i hope i’m wrong.

He was pretty average in jax, so most GM’s/Owners know what they will get with him. They will look at the young upcoming coordinators or experienced coordinators before giving him a shot.
But hey lets not worry that far ahead. He’s our DC this season!

I didn't follow Jax very much
but they never struck me as a team with a lot of talent. They did however play some tough D for the most part….maybe I’m wrong though

He didn't build some defense dynasty there
Jax was almost as bad on defense as we were in 2010. It improved because of massive money spent on FA’s. That is a really bad indicator for someone with an 8-year record as HC and coming from the defensive side
It's one thing to spend money on FAs and it's another thing to get them to play.
Just because he brought in FA for defense doesn’t detract from what he did. Dallas has done the samething as well as the eagles. If anything, that shows how good of a coach he is. Also if you look at his span of his HC career, his defense was usually tops in the league—not just on free agents either. So yes, he did build a good defensive team. That’s what you think of first when you usually think of the jags.

He didn't do much in Jax
The reality is that Jax did better on offense than on defense during the course of his entire tenure there. His DC there (Mike Smith) did a great job – and is now head coach of the Falcons – but JDR didn’t develop Mike Smith. Mike Smith was the DL asst coach on the Ravens in 2000 (a team which had a gob of coaches who are now head coaches) so JDR knew he was ready for a promo.
And Jax has not had a great defense since Mike Smith left. So JDR’s legacy on defense is really not much at all
I disagree. It was defense that he was known for throughout his tenure.
First you shoot him down because of FA and now your counter argument is that the sucess was on the DC? (I don’t believe in fairy tales) It’s like saying Bill Belichick doesn’t have anything to do with the defense with the pats or John Fox doesn’t have anything to do with the defense with the broncos or even the panthers. Also the Jags defense was top ten this year. That’s with a different DC which proves that Rio does in fact have something to do with the defense. Rio has always been a defensive minded coach. To say he didn’t have anything to do with those defenses is foolish. Also he had success under Fox in Carloina—on defense— before going to the Jags. Again, he has always been a defensive minded coach.

Look at the statistics
The Jax defense was good during Mike Smiths tenure as DC. When Smith left, the Jax defense went from #12 (Smith’s last year) to #23 (2008), #24 (2009), #28 (2010) before rebounding this year with monstrous amounts of FA additions. And 2011 Jax has less to do with JDR because he knew he was going to be fired the entire year (just as I don’t hold Fox at all responsible for his last season in Carolina)
And JDR was DC for ONE year.
which proves he wasn't a great HC but nothing about the kind of DC he is (Del Rio).

The reason why the defense took a turn for the worse was because of Stroud and Henderson got old.
Those two were the heart and soul of the defense for the whole time. Also like I said, the HC—with a defensive background—always has a hand in the defense. Bill Belichick went through the same process of trying to replace his defensive studs and guess what? It took him a while too. It’s not easy replacing those kind of guys right away. Also the samething happened to Fox in Carolina.
Still you’re overlooking the fact that it is one thing to spend on FA and it’s another to get them to play. Go look at the Cowboys and Eagles because it doesn’t always workout. Even look at the redskins. By getting them to play to a high level—which they did— just shows his coaching skills. It takes the right coach to get a lot of FA to play at a high level. In addition, Rio wouldn’t have been fired if Gabbert didn’t play like crap the whole time. Gabbert was terrible this year. If he was at least average with that defense, RIo would still be the headcoach.

I did look at the numbers. The offense only made the top ten twice--I'll give you three for being 12.
While the defense on the other hand was in the top ten or near the top ten 6 of his 9 years. Most of the time the jags offense was either 15 or in the 20s. Like you said, the numbers say different.

Here are the numbers just in case....
Offense: 2003-12 2004-21 2005-15 2006- 10 2007-7 2008-20 2009-18 2010-15 2011— 32…yes 32
Defense: 2003-6 2004-11 2005-6 2006-2 2007-12 2008-17 2009- 23 2010- 28 2011-6
So the offense had 4 top 15’s and two top tens. The highest they got was 7.
The defense had 6 top 15’s, 4 top 10’s, and ranked top 5 once. Not to mention they went from 28 to 6 in one year turnaround. You don’t see that every year.
Looking at those numbers, it was defense during his time. You can keep saying it was offense, but it doesn’t make it true.

Four times his defenses ranked in the top ten. Two teams they were either 11 or 12.
So 9 years with one team and he had essentially 6 top ten defenses. That’s pretty dang good. The lowest it got was 28, but that went up to 6th rated defense in the NFL the next year. Again, that’s pretty dang good reguardless of how many FAs he brought in.

Good point. I don’t know why , but as soon as i heard this news i instantly thought about the future of the DC in Denver. I still think that if there is a HC vacancy in a team that was terrible on the Defensive side of the ball, they won’t hesitate to seek permission to speak with Del Rio. But, as far as this coming season goes, i’m stoked he’s our guy. I really am.

Crenell is different
They are promoting within, they already know what he is capable of.
1 He already has a relationship with the chiefs
2 he had a trial run at the end of the year.
3 he has player support.
he wasn’t a candidate anywhere else though.
True, but he was hired pretty quickly. Maybe some teams would have been interested. But, seeing as how he did in Cleveland, i’m glad he’s the Chiefs HC. He might make a season sweep easier.

It's weird because they are popular
but It seems as if Foxy’s goal is to go undefeated winning every game 3-0. Most popular teams put up a ton of points. But this team is going to ground and pound you into submission. Orange Crush is back on D, and the way they run it’s coming to the Offense. Love this gameplan, run and play great defense, and then… Tebow Time!
Why i think Tebow is the perfect QB for this team.
He can pass and pound it, and showed that he win the close games. Let the D and run game dominate and let Tebow do his thing

except Tebow and the whole offense have to improve their pattern of 3s and outs all game, which can really, really tire a defense. That has to improve. But I think it will, as I think the D will improve.

Talk about upgrading EFX, nicely done.
I like this especially for Von Miller and Nate Irving. He’ll turn Miller into more of a complete LB. Also maybe he’ll get Matt Roth to come over as well. That would be a nice rotation of Dumervil/Ayers/Roth at DE.

Del Rio’s record looks like he can focus on one thing for three years before it falls apart while he’s focusing on something else. His record in Jax was switching his focus from defense to offense to defense to offense

He and Fox coached together in 2002 in Carolina. As a Panthers DC, he turned the 31st ranked defense, and changed into the 2nd D overall in 1 season. Then he became our HC:

I am super stoked about the hire. Buuuuuut....
As others have mentioned, he will again some day be a HC candidate. I was hoping we’d hire someone that may want to stick around for a while, and I’m afraid JDR won’t want to do that should another team come calling. I hope I’m wrong, as I would love JDR to be our guy going forward at DC.

He was an average HC, so no team will be in a rush to give him a job again.
Allen was a up and coming type.

they may be a HC candidate and they will probably take that job because they will make more money. Allen was only a coordinator for a year and apparently he became a HC candidate. If you want your team to be successful you might lose a few coaches and coordinators. I think what is important is who your head coach is.

Fox is hiring fallers not risers. Coaches who he is already familiar with. But two other defensive coaches who he brought over from Carolina – Smith and Milus – are not ready to be promoted to a DC job with Fox?
And Jags defense sucked in 2010 (ranked #28), 2009 (#24), 2008 (#23). Ever since Mike Smith left as Jags DC. Countered in 2011 only thru $90 million of FA signings.

My point is that Fox is not a coach who is creating a coaching tree. He is not someone who is hiring people who he promotes. He is hiring Peter Principle type of people.

Kubes hired Wade Phillips (an absolutely attrocious HC, but a FINE DC). Even with several stars out, that D was fantastic. Mike Nolan was a “faller” when we hired him, but I think most agree that while his tenure as HC was tenuous, his command of a Defense is superb. Just because a guy did not make it as an HC, means nothing regarding their ability to run a D or an O. HC is a very different skill set that some just do not possess and/or it comes late (let’s not forget that Shanny and BB was very UNSUCCESSFUL the first go around as an HCs). Fox may not be ready to promote from within, especially when there is a guy he believes is great and is available and is willing. That combo is not common… it may also have a lot to do with Elway’s input.
All in all, I think we have a shot at a great D with JDR as the DC. It is not any more a lock than when Shanny hired bid daddy Bates to run the D, but there is a track record of success there that looks attractive.
So Wade Phillips shouldnt have been hired as DC?
How about Nolan? Crennel? The whole “he was a bad HC so he’ll be a bad coordinator” mantra doesnt make sense

It is a FACT however that our coaching staff is now almost completely full of coaches who have failed at doing bigger jobs than they are doing. This is not a good sign. And I’m really surprised that people can’t see this. Our coaching staff is now, basically, constipated – excuse my French – after a little over one year.
And what doesn’t make sense is the 99.9% of posters here who are prattling on about Jax great defense as a reason for why JDR is a great hire. Jax great defenses were coincident to Mike Smith’s tenure as DC there – not JDR tenure as HC there.
I really hope I’m wrong. I hope this is the best coaching staff we can assemble and that the stuff I’m worried about is just entirely coincidental.
We have a much better structure than weve ever had
as long as the drafts continue to be solid, we will be ok. Its only been one year. Weve doubled our wins from 2010. The Broncos are trending up, not down. For the 1st time in a long time I feel good about the direction this team is headed. And Fox wasnt a failure at Carolina. He’s the 3rd winningest coach since he entered the league.

And that is why BB didn’t get fired for cheating, and why the spygate scandal has been swept way under the rug. They are to the NFL what Barry Bonds is to baseball.

Fox is not creating a coaching organization
This has nothing to do with wins-losses. It has everything to do with building a structure/organization.
If Fox is fired (fingers crossed it doesn’t happen)/retires/dies/decides to join a monastery; then the only serious internal candidate to replace him would be Mike McCoy. But he was already undermined for a HC job here when Eric Studesville was promoted over him on an interim basis. Now we’ve brought in someone on the DC side who’s not an internal candidate either.
And underneath that, we don’t seem to have any coaches who are being interviewed for other bigger jobs. And a lot of them are here because they are “friends of Fox”. This isn’t to say they aren’t good coaches. It is simply very very insular management. If Fox is fired, most of the coaching staff will also have to be fired. And until then, there will not be even minor coaching turnover (which is usually the only way to bring in new ideas).
That is not “structure”. It is comfort zone decision-making that will create huge disruption in the future if things don’t go as planned.

a lot of the staff goes too. McCoy was interviewed for the Raiders, Phins, and Jags. So this statement goes out the window.

Teams are attractive to coaches who think they can get promoted there. This is now the second year in a row (same coach) on the defensive side where we have gone outside and thus cut off implicit promotions. Fox brought Smith and Milus over from Carolina and has now implicitly told them twice that they aren’t going anywhere. The only DC who worked for him for more than a year and the only coordinator (offense or defense) Fox has ever promoted internally (Mike Trgovac) quit in 2008 and took a lower level job in Green Bay. Now we’ve hired a celebrity who has one year’s experience as a DC.
This management style sends a message to position coaches. Has nothing to do with Fox as a coach or a person. Just a management style that afaik has never ended happily. At a minimum, it means that one of our better veteran FA QB’s to backup Tebow next year (David Garrard) is no longer an option.
He didn't deny anyone who was offered an interview somewhere a chance to do it.
Most teams are allowed to deny interviews when the moves are lateral. Green Bay has denied interviews from some of their candidates this year because they don’t want to lose their coaches either. No big deal. We aren’t the only team to do it. They are under contract after all so it is reasonable when the move is lateral.

Lets see. Whe have Clancy Barone who coached Antonio Gates,
Nunnely who coached a great D-line in SD. What have they done since he left btw? We have Adam Gase who was a good WR coach and a decent QB coach. Eric Studesville RB coach who has had a pretty successful career doing what he is doing. Fox didn’t know any of those guys but kept them on.
The guys he did bring over:
Jay Rodgers, ST, made our ST better in one year. Dave Magazu, incredible O-line coach. Look what he did with a below average (talent wise) line this year (referring to franklin, Walton and Beadles). And Richard Smith. So even if they are “friends of Fox” they are fantastic and have done a stellar job. Any of these guys have potential to step up. The only retread on that list is Smith who wasn’t very good as DC (but was actually still better than Allen re pts per game 22.8). I don’t get that they are building a bad coaching organization just because of this hire.

I guess I’d like at least one example other than Studesville and I ojnly say that because he was an interim coach, but stayed on.
Do you remember the DTs he took in the draft early on and how stout they were against the run? I’m sorry I forgot one of their names but one of them was Marcus Stroud…an absolute stud!
I’m just saying between that and his familiarity with LB play at the pro level…I am absolutely stoked!! IMO his strength is the middle of the defense and what do most people here at MHR say we need? Improvement up the middle.

I really like Mathis and have a 27 Mathis jersey hanging in my closet.
He is a local JAX guy but he has had major injury issues. The comments that poster make about Goodman are similar to what I heard week after week at JAG games. You would be trading one guy on the down side of his career for another one. The Jags and Broncos have similar secondary issues with ether guys on the wrong side of 30 or very young players with potential but little experience.

Man I didn’t know what it was but MHR takes longer to load than basically any other site i visit. Often is loads with all the formats weird and you have to refresh two or three times. I just persevere but at least I know what it is now.

what was all this, “we’re in no hurry… we’re going to evaluate it and take our time.” The only thing that sucks about this, and I mean the ONLY thing, is it seems our veterans are getting pissed. Champ and B Dawk must be getting sick of this defensive coordinator version of musical chairs. I know I would if I were in their shoes.
Oh well… I believe we got a good one. Very rarely does a DC turned HC, go back to DC and suck. We will have continued success on the defensive side of the ball. Question is, will everyone buy in?

Champ alluded to it in a recent interview. The good news is, Del Rio was pretty mediocre as a HC so I dont think anyone will be calling him up to take over anytime soon. Also, some of the defensive players said that it was really Fox’s D, and Allen was just the voice. So its not as bad as when we lost Nolan back in ’10 and promoted Wink (shudder)

Denver is also close to hiring strength and conditioning coach Luke Richesson, who spent the past three seasons on Del Rio’s staff in Jacksonville. Richesson would replace Rich Tuten, whose contract was not renewed after 17 seasons with the Broncos.

According to a lot reports out of Jacksonville
Del Rio became lazy and quit caring. He was always the last person to show up to the building and did little actual game planning. Now I don’t know how much of that is true but to me Del Rio was one of the best HC’s in the league a couple years ago. I think he’s a good HC when he tries but I just don’t think he tried that hard over the past couple years.
Like I said before, this is all based off media reports so it could be false and it could’ve been just because of the massive lack of talent on Jacksonville over the past couple of years so take what I’m saying for a grain of salt.

same thing happened in Jacksonville that is happening in San Diego. When new ownership saw this, they realized to get people into seats, first thing they need to do is get rid of Del Rio. The previous owner had always been incredibly supportive of Jack.

What may be overlooked is the ability del Rio has to develop talent, and not just on the field. This is a classic best player available kind of move, and it creates an environment of high end talent, where the assistants glean from their superiors and elders the wealth of experience they bring.
I love this hire, and believe it makes the Broncos better.

I don’t understand the sentiment that JDR will leave soon for another HC gig. I just have to look at Mike Nolan for my counter argument. How many teams have been lining up to give Nolan another shot as head coach?

We will most likely get at least 2 or 3 years out of him. Thats all you can hope for in this league. The Lebeau’s and Johnson’s of the world are very rare. Lets have a ton of success and need to replace him in a couple of years.

Video starts off with Vikings on offense but when they switch to defense you can see Del Rio as #55 all over the field as a wide ranging linebacker.
That kind of real experience as a player has to benefit a real good coach.

I wonder if Jack Del Rio might get on this site just to get a feel for the fans, only to discover the fans are already drooling over his young daughters . It might make him a little uneasy
Good hire but lets not go overboard- JDR only had one season as a defensive co-ordinator and did very well
He was also LB coach for the Ravens 2000 SB season, one of the best defences of all time.
But a DC can only do so much to disguise lack of talent and to get back to Orange Crush we probably need 2 more defensive orientated drafts.
Expect to JDR to be solid – teach fundamentals like tackling and provide consistency.

For anyone to thing he did poorly as HC wouldn’t understand how difficult that franchise made things. To follow up Coughlin was no easy task (he overachieved there w/the limited resources in personnel management) but lets not forget it was Manning’s division. Garrard v Manning? Leftwich v Manning? I’m sorry but that will only get a team so far but Stroud was a beast in the middle of that line.
I’m excited for this addition though!

They are proving that they really want to get this team back to its winning ways and are serious about the defense. I love it!
He will be great with our LBers and especially the development of Von and Irving. I can’t wait to see a top 10 defense in the short years to come.

I hated losing Dennis Allen to the Raiders but our defense is going to be much better next year under Del Rio.

All I know is, since del Rio has been in Jax, that team has physically mauled the Broncos.
I am glad the guy responsible for that culture of toughness is on our side now. Do you remember how they shoved use up and down the field since at least 2006? It was like watching us vs… oh… say…. the Pats a couple weeks ago. Like watching a steam roller vs. a skateboard. Like watching JaMarcus Russell vs. an ice cream cone. Like watching… OK I’m done.

when he played for the Dolphins, he demoralized them so they bring him in and you know the rest, no Super Bowl championships! Nevertheless, with Del Rio, we will win some Super Bowls I hope!
