Andre Goodman's shiny new contract

For the Broncos to win on Sunday, Andre Goodman just needs to catch the ball and earn a new contract from whichever team doesn't invest heavily in a scouting department...The fates are lined up for Andre to have a huge impact on this game and do just that.

All season, we've seen Goodman's man running freely through the defense with Andre either trailing by a solid 4-8 feet or giving too much cushion on comeback routes. We've watched opposing qbs go to that particular well over and over. We've seen Goodman come up with game changing interceptions when opposing qbs have gotten too confident in their ability to attack him and have simply flung the ball in his direction knowing their receiver would win the ball.

We now have the great Ben Roethlisberger coming to town to set the scenario for Goodman. The Steelers will have obviously scouted the Broncos D and won't be fooled by any coverage schemes. Their passing attack is predicated on finding the defenses weakness and using Roethlisberger's accuracy to attack that weakness. Basic Football. Outs, comebacks, and slants. The Steelers know that the Broncos will unleash the dogs with VonDoom and that those outs, slants, and comebacks will be open all day long on Goodman's side and will obviously attack this glaring weakness and play right into the Broncos only chance of winning.

Roethlisberger can't push off on his throws and this causes one of two things to happen. His accuracy suffers as he tries to guide the ball with just his arm strength and the ball sails on the comeback routes; right to where Andre Goodman is usually helplessly watching...or his velocity suffers and the ball tends to be behind the receiver on the slants and outs; right to where Andre Goodman is helplessly chasing the receiver that has just torched him.

No quarterback at any level can resist throwing to a wide open receiver. Instinct takes over. With the scouting reports and gameplanning, they won't try to pick on Champ and, being the smart team they are, they'll go after the glaring weakness on the other side...unfortunately for them, as long as the Broncos don't change anything about how Goodman covers, I'm guessing Goodman gets 4 or 5 balls thrown right at him...if he catches 2 or 3 of them, he gets his new contract, and we all get really really excited about sending VonDoom after Mr. Flacco.

Goodman is in the 3rd year of a 4 year contract so I have no idea what you are getting at.

Our UFAs are Bunkley (need to resign), M Thomas (need to resign), Woodyard (need to resign), Fells (whatever), and Royal (see ya, don’t let the door hit ya).

Probably a few other bottom of the roster types are UFAs that are not worth mentioning.

Not until they get a CB primed for his spot.

There’s no way I want a 5’9 guy being my #2 CB, you think our defensive passing stats are high now, we’d be at the bottom of the barrel.

Are you talking about Harris?

If you are, Harris has outperformed Goodman all year long. Harris has easily been the second best CB on the team.

by tiderfootball09 on Jan 5, 2012 3:06 PM MST up reply actions

In a nickel role

and playing slot receivers yes he has done well. He has yet to line up on a #1 or #2 receiver. I feel he will need more “seasoning” before you put him on an island with a #1 or #2 WR.

That's because he is NOT a number 2 CB.

On just about any other team in the league, he is depth, not a starter. He has been outperformed week in and week out by an undrafted rookie. He needs to be gone. I love the plays he’s made for us on occasion, but we need to upgrade in the worst way.

I think Goodman is probably a starter on a lot of NFL teams. I’ll name a few.

Oakland, Minnesota, Tampa Bay, Jacksonville, Chicago, Green Bay, New England, Carolina, NY Giants, Colts and maybe St Louis.

Andre Goodman may get replaced by a 1st round draft pick (and I’ll be fine with that), but he is not the weakest spot on our team or D. He has decent coverage skills and the body type of a #1 CB. He played as well in 2011 as he did in 2010.

Our weakness in the secondary is actual at FS/SS. If we had better safety play, it would scare QBs into more INT throws to our CBs. But QBs can easily work around our safety play because we have NO play-makers at either position.

Which pisses me the hell off because we’ve spent so many high draft picks at FS/SS over the last three drafts. Our scouts completely suck at finding FS/SS players.

I am not saying he doesn't have starter talent.

In fact, he has flashes of brilliance. The problem is, in between those flashes he gives up big plays in clusters. The one play that killed me the most was the Chad Johnson (I will not call him by his name change, it’s just stupid) touchdown. And as far as those other teams you mentioned where you think he would be a starter, he may be as good as the guys they all ready have, but them picking him up would be a lateral move. It would not improve them at all. Also, he is getting up there in age for a DB, so he is almost certainly going to get progressively worse.

But you are absolutely correct on our scouting of rookies at the safety positions. It is painful to watch our safety play outside of BDawk, and if you believe the rumors, he may be done for good. This is very bad for our team.

Never let them see you bleed.

Dawkins is 39 so he should be done for good soon anyway.

The problem is McBath plays for the Jags and sucks, Bruton is a career backup, Moore looks awful and Carter is hit/miss.

that’s unaccepatble considering where these players were drafted. At least one should be an above average starter. So far, four mild to major disappointments. That may be unfair to Carter actually. He’s doing okay for a rookie 4th rounder.

Goodman is a lateral move, but he’s okay. In today’s NFL, teams pass for 400 yards all the time. CBs give up a lot of catches on every team. There is like… zero shutdown CBs in the NFL. I’m serious about that. Goodman does give up catches, but so do most CBs. He seems like an average #2 to me with good athletic skills, good ball skills and crappy tacking skills. He’s not some major liability like some here paint him as. He’s just a #2 CB in a league that stacks the rules against him because they want fantasy football fanbois to stay happy.

I think what he's trying to say is....

we almost certainly WILL NOT retain Goodie, so he will try to make a huge impact for us in the playoffs to show other teams what they’ll be investing in. I tend to agree with him.

Exactly

a) He’s affordable
b) Finding a FA better than him will cost $$$$
c) If we draft a CB early, even then you ideally don’t want them starting day 1, 2012.
d) If we draft a CB early, you want them to fight for their spot in the starting line up. Competition never hurt anyone.
e) He’s better than all but one of our CB (you could make a case for Chris Harris, admittedly). So if we draft better than Goodman, worst case you need to slightly overpay a #3 or #4 CB on your team.

I’d be shocked if Goodman gets cut but hey, stranger things have happened.

I doubt Goodman gets cut. Unless we draft two CBs.

Besides, Champ and Goodman are the same age. We’re going to need to new CBs at some point and if Harris is one of them, then we need a new starter CB and new nickel CB. If Squid is one of them, then we need a new dime CB.

I’m saying we keep Goodman and still take a CB high in 2012.

I see it as highly unlikely we draft two

Backup cornerbacks aren’t what we need. Where we’re lacking is in one of the future starter positions.

Yeah I know

But you need to look at this logically. Do you really think Champ is retiring in the next two or three years? Do you think in that time he’s going to decine to the point where he’s not at least an average starter? So why would you draft his replacement now?? It makes no sense Digger when you have DL needs, WR needs, a RB need and OL depth needs. One CB and one CB only.

Agree on Thomas, Woody (though he has lacked....

last years impact, agree on Bunkley mucho and Fells is ok as long as he comes on the budget. However on Royal I disagree bud. Mebbe I still look back on his first year and think of what could of been… I still watch his Rookie debut against the raiders….

I don’t think he should go. Rather I would see him stay. But as a returner and used as much as Hester and Cobb are used on their respective teams. Mebbe even less than Hester on offense. Pay him with a heavily incentivized ST contract and give him to the ST. Make him earn a turn on offense like the others.

We need a bad boy back there. And we haven’t had that dood since Gordon. And Gordon wasn’t near as capable.

Oh and Harris as a starter… Agree on what he’s done this year. However some are type cast perfectly for their role. I hope he has more but I’d settle for his current and very important role now.

by lvfan on Jan 5, 2012 11:05 PM MST up reply actions

I don’t see much difference between #2 CB and nickel CB. They both play a ton don’t they? You basically need three starting caliber CBs in the NFL. We have that right now, but two are old and what if one gets hurt?

We need to draft a CB in 2012 and still retain Goodman. Can take yet another CB in 2013. Hopefully Squid bounces back.

And hopefully Moore develops into the safety he was drafted to be. We get no freaking INTs from our safeties and that really pisses me off.

Eddie Royal SUCKS. He showed no effort on his routes Sunday. He drops a lot of passes, he runs crappy routes and he mopes. He is small, gets pushed around and hurt too often. He SUCKS and I want him no where near the Broncos next season.

Denver could easily draft a better return man in round 3. LeMichael James or the like.

Tim Tebow is Denver's 2012 starting QB. I'm not even kind of sorry that offends some of you (including you Elway).

by McGeorge on Jan 6, 2012 7:47 AM MST up reply actions

I wish it were that easy..

As I see it the difference is not 1,2 or nickle.

These days teams have not just one or two bad boy mitts they have many. I grant you Harris has been amazing. However he has been amazing in the middle of the field side line to side line. I love his tackling ability and he seems to be at the point of contact a lot. But does that translate to dominating one side of the field? Thats the way the DBs play. Champ on one side(right), and whom ever on the other. Does Harris have the hips and speed to play true corner? I do not think so. I hope I am wrong but in my opinion he is the best Nickle back we’ve ever had. And in this new NFL that is a dood worth his weight in silver. Call him a short Safety cause he can do damage to TE and RBs. Mebbe this is even a new position in the new NFL. I know not new, but hello damn important!

I’ve missed Squid and his placement with the team. Distance and time do that. I think the penalty to Moore early on where he hurt the Bills guy hurt him too. His confidence. These guys are fighters and you ruin confidence you change a players game. Carter was different today and that was exciting. I hate long hair as I am an old Army type. Up till now he was all fluff. Today he hit with menace.

Eddies doesnt suck sir. And this is proven by his game today. Denver has failed him and now we get to see him go to Washington. We’ve not used him correctly. People cry for Harvin or Jackson. We’ve always had him. Just didn’t use him. Think back to the Jets game and how he pulled us out of the end zone near game end. I’ve never disagreed with you so strongly before. However, a player on the sidelines with head low during a rally should be smacked.

Now to the bad. Please tell me we have a solution at middle linebacker. Mays is a force in uniform. But damn he is ALWAYS out of position or takes a bad angle. Champ is not Champ. Either he is hurt or something needs to change. Hernandez burned him flat footed which NEVER happened. Bowe ran around him like he was Gordon of old. He would be an insane saftey still. Doc will retire. Please do so in health sir and I wish you the best Champ fill that void please.

Did anyone notice WW not in the game? He used to bring it. Mebbe C Harris fills the role? If he was injured please forgive.

Eric Decker is a Chris Carter study. Carter hates tebow. They work out together in the offseason Decker will become a cancer. Many have paid wrong attention to the wrong guy. Decker has had the worst body language of anyone. His hand come up on many Tebow arrant tosses. BTW F* Brandon Lloyd. How is life with the Rams?

James would amazing though we have have Johnson at RB. He is better than Bell and just as elusive. Why he doesn’t practice well eludes me. Game time he does contribute.
Prolly too much of a reply but MG I look forward to what you have to say.

Cheers, and I too bleed orange and blue.

Agreed on Royal.

We should keep him, but make him primarily a return specialist. At this point, that is the only area where he makes a significant impact. I remember his coming out party against Oakland as well, and I remember thinking “this guy is going to be good”, but it just hasn’t happened. It is time to give his offensive spot to someone who will make plays and make him our ST game changer, a role he has proven in the past is an excellent fit for him.

Like Rivers… he doesn’t really care about Bailey. I assume he will be lined on Wallace which means a big cushion and plenty of room for underneathe stuff.

If Dawkins is able to play…I’d rather he hold off until the 2nd half. Take the 1st half off unless they absolutely need him to play. Give the other guys a shot to step up and say “BD, we got this.” Use him as a halftime adjustment if needed.

The Steelers are going to air it out so hopefully the DB’s and WR’s are focusing on catching this week.

I really do not believe Ben is hurt.

And I’m not on a island with that train of thought, The guys over at profootballtalk.com are starting to catch on as well. The post that was most telling was this one where a Pittsburgh sports personality claimed that, " Ben’s limp happened right when Roethlisberger walked past an ESPN crew.

Ben loves to be “injured” for two reasons:

1) He keeps his tough guy persona.

2) Automatic built in excuse. And this is the thing he really cherishes, the above poster has already fell victim to it; blaming future mistakes on said injury.

And not to harp but lets go back to the game that he initially hurt the ankle. After spending many minutes rolling on the ground in agony (come’on, we all know one of THOSE guys) he went back in for an X-ray… Negative.

After the game he commented that he, “thought that it was broken.” I think bronco country can testify that we know what a broken ankle looks like! And on that note— that’s how you handle pain like a man. However; it turns out to be the most MILD ankle sprain one can achieve.

I’m calling it now, we will WIN this game, Ben’s mistakes will be numerous and without fail, after every mistake, he will examine his ankle (almost immediately) and then like Pavlov’s dog the announcers will start in with, “Looks like that ankle is really bothering Big Ben!”

Mark my words.

Ive been hard on Goody. And its easy to to that watching from a couch.

But he gets picked on quite a lot. No one is going to adequately cover a receiver every snap. Bailey cant even do it. In fact, I think he has stepped up his play the last few weeks. He hasnt been a huge liability (but part of that may be the increased exploitation of our safety troubles). Having said that, we still need an upgrade. I gave Goody the benefit of the doubt, but as I watched in person it got harder and harder. His man is open an incredible amount of the time, but the play that did it for me, was against Detroit on one of Harvin’s long touchdowns. Goodman somehow determined that it would be better for the team if he ran right past the ball carrier to hit the blocker rather than try to make a tackle. That's the Vikings not Detroit.

The best of the 2011-2012 season is yet to come.

misstated that.

The "Experts" you see on television are all striving to be right 30% of the time. I'm lazy so no link,

but I’m sure you know Champ got burnt a lot last week.

Yes he did, but I think that is as much the fault of the safeties as it is his.

He was playing off his receiver all game, that I would be willing to bet that it was because he didn’t have any faith in the safeties behind him picking up any plays he let get behind him.

Never let them see you bleed.
My shit always works sometimes.

He can't take the chance for a pick

that he might if we anybody worth a shit back there for forever.

Champ's going to bet burned

by guys like Calvin Johnson and Dwayne Bowe occasionally. Those guys are equal talents to Champ and occasionally they’re going to win the one on one matchups with him. Though I didn’t see Bowe score any TDs. Goodman unfortunately gets torched by everyone and was hopelessly out of position when the picks he got against the Jets and Viks were thrown to him.
