By the numbers: Week 6 PLAYMAKERS

This game was make or break IMO. 2-4 while also losing the tiebreaker to SD would have left us in a horrid position coming back from the bye. We also needed a win like this to keep people believing in each other. Let's look at who the difference makers were in week 6:

OFFENSE NOTES:

*Our running game wasn't (maybe even isn't) very good. Back in the day (the days of Terrell Davis), we would walk in against any team, no matter how good they were against the run, and we'd run it up their you know whats. We would impose our will against them. We had a great line, a great running back, and a great playcaller. Those days are past I realize, but if we are serious about contending for super bowls, we need to run the ball better. We aren't going to be the best, but for the most part we didn't get it done on the ground this week. SD has a good run defense, so it was to be expected, but I was wishing for the days when we imposed our will on the ground.

*This week McGahee scored a net 0 playmaker points running the ball. He did have 3 first down runs late in the game, but he also had a holding penalty and some 3rd down fails as well. He had a good game as a receiver. Overall, it seemed to me that McGahee didn't have his usual burst. He just didn't hit the hole as quickly as he has at times. Hillman was a non-factor. I'd like to see him more in the receiving game. It's tough to establish the run when you're getting your butt kicked early.

*We need to get used to the idea that we are a passing team, and we need to play that way early. We won't set up the passing game by running the ball like Fox is used to. We need to pass to set up the run, or just pass the ball early and often. It's hard to know whether the offense was flat in the first half because of the usual first half malaise that we've seen so far this year, or whether we were out of sorts because of the special teams turnovers and the Decker trip. We moved the ball well in the second half, but we still lose this game without the TDs from the defense in the second half.

*Manning was awesome, but I for one feel that he's getting too much of the credit for this one. The game ball really belongs on the defensive side of the ball. The pick-6 he served up isn't all his fault, but without the 14 pts off turnovers in the second half, this game would have been a loss.

*In terms of the playmaker scoring (below) it was not a very high score for the offensive side of the ball. The big reason was we had a bunch of penalties, and only a 25% success rate on 3rd down. Not stellar.

DEFENSE

*I've got to say that defensively, this was an awesome performance. I thought our defense would be worn out in the second half since they were given such shitty situations by the ST, but they really showed up to play the last 30 minutes. Considering they had to defend for 18 of the first 30 minutes, they did pretty well giving up only 17 points given the circumstances.

*We really needed to have a breakout game in the TO department, and we got it. Thanks phyllis!

*What's noteworthy to me is who was making plays in the secondary. Harris and Carter had fantastic games for the most part, and their big plays enabled the comeback. Harris has been up and down this season, but he was a ballhawk, and we need more of that. Bailey had a quiet game. Often that is because opponents don't throw at him, but we're going to need him to get us some picks as the year progresses.

*I've read quite a few comments here on MHR about Dumervil not doing a good enough job. I don't see it. He was the closer for this one, and he made sure to slam the door on any thoughts by Rivers to come back on us. I thought he was money in the bank in this game. What more do you want? 3 TFL, 3 3rd/4th down stops and 2 FF. Not a bad outing, I bet any opponent would love to have him.

*Our line played pretty well I thought, and they made a bunch of plays right around the line of scrimmage. Quiet game for Miller. He only had one sack after all.

*STAT OF THE WEEK: 40. We've scored 40 offensive pts this season in the first half (compared to 108 in the second half) but we've given up only 40 points in the second half this season (compared to 91 in the first half). This could be a combination of poor game planning or lots of first half errors. Either way, we are no fun to play in the second half.

*6 Turnovers!! We needed all those turnovers to pull this one off. Let's hope it's a sign of things to come!
