October 3, 1982: The Game that Never Was
The Broncos were coming off a 1981 season which had seen them finish with a 10-6-0 regular season record and in a tie for first place in the AFC West. Unfortunately, Denver missed the playoffs due to the tiebreaker rules. They entered the 1982 season with high expectations. After opening the season with a 1-1-0 record, the Broncos were due to host the 2-0-0 Pittsburgh Steelers on October 3. That game was never played.
The 1982 season was marred by a 57-day long strike by the NFL’s players. No games were played between September 19 and November 21. The regular season was reduced from 16 games to 9 games. The playoffs consisted of a 16-team "bracket-style" playoff with each conference providing 8 teams. Unfortunately, the Broncos did not bounce back well from the strike and did not make the playoffs that year.
