I'm 32. Been a Broncos fan as long as I can remember. I grew up sitting on the cold, uncomfortable benches in the manic South Stands and I came to know my beloved Broncos. I learned about Elway's 4th Quarter Magic, got my first jersey, #84 :-), I learned how awesome it was to hear the stadium announcer say Karl Meck ............ lenburg, and watched the team grow bit by bit into a 2 time Super Bowl Champion. I knew who those Broncos were, knew the pieces, how they came to be, and I could share in the joy of being #1.
Free Agency has changed a lot about football, but that has never been more evident than this season. I don't know who these guys are, and what's worse ... I don't believe in them. Why??? I loooooove Peyton Manning. Looooove watching that guy play. But I cannot even watch these games anymore, because I get so infuriated with how they play, and then Manning comes in and saves the day. As much as I love the guy, he's not a Bronco. He's just visiting the team for a year or 2 and then he'll be gone and ... then what? Brock steps in and we carry on? I think not. Manning may come in and save the day, and win a bunch of games, and maybe even win a Super Bowl, but he get's to make his mark and move on. We still have to live with this team afterwards. The team that got absolutely, unequivocally, and completely embarrassed by the Patriots to end their season last year. And then again some 9 months later. Now we are 'Power Ranked" as the number 2 or 3 team, and I just don't believe it. I don't buy this team as a serious contender. I see typical Bronco problems being masked by 2 remarkable players in Peyton and Von. How is it that the entire nation sees this team as a contender and I don't?
I'm rambling, but what I am getting at is .... am I even a Bronco fan anymore? I mustered up the fandom to root for the team led by Bubby, then Brian, then Jake, all to be totally let down by the end of each passing season, and hoping for next year. Then again, a new hope in Josh Mcdaniels and then again in Tebow magic and ... I think that may have tapped me out. I really think the fact we can't build a team anymore has just ruined it for me. These Broncos have taught me to not get my hopes up anymore. It's always about the new player, the new coach, the new coordinator. It's never about building a team now. It's constant turnover. This is why I can't believe in this team. We all know Peyton is a limited time offer, but can we honestly say anything different about Von Miller? What happens when this guy hits free agency? You think Dan Snyder won't try to offer this guy a 6 billion dollar contract to get him outta here? That Jerry Jones won't attempt to promise this guy a golden throne to rule the world from if he comes to Dallas? Is his heart really gonna keep him here? With a team that can't keep a defense together for more than 10 months? With a team that (by that point in time) will be just like most every other team, searching for a franchise quarterback?
I'm sick to my stomach to admit this, but while the Broncos may be the 2nd best team in the AFC maybe even the 2nd best team in the NFL, they will still end the season the same way they've ended the last 14 years. In disappointment, with hopes and changes to follow. I would love to see this team face the Pats in the playoffs, and I would love to think they have learned from their mistakes and can actually compete against that #%#%&*ing team, but I am done hoping for it. Am I even a fan anymore?
