Needs based FA and Draft by position
As I'm reduced to watching golf today, I decided to go position by position, who to keep, who to lose and where to recruit from:
OL - Clady, Beadles, Walton, Kuper, Franklin start. Hochstein, Ramirez cut, Clark & Hills remain to be joined by draft choices
120. Philip Blake (6'2" / 320lb / 26yo) C from Baylor
129. Lucas Nix (6'5" / 305 / 23) OG from Pittsburgh
216. Derek Dennis (6"5" / 328 / 23) OG from Temple
QB - Tebow to start with Webber and Josh Johnson (FA) or Dennis Dixon (FA) to replace Quinn and compete with Webber.
RB - McGahee to be joined by draft choice:
57. Doug Martin (5'11" / 224 /23) from Boise State
Ball to be kept, J Johnson to be cut.
TE - Thomas and Green to remain and a higher pick added to be the starter they compete against:
25. Dwayne Allen (6'4" / 255 / 23) from Clemson
Fells and Rosario lo leave
WR - Thomas, Decker, Royal and Willis to stay. Cosby to leave
FB - Larsen and Q Johnson to stay
DE - Ayers and Dumervill to be supported by Harvey and Hunter.
DT - Re-sign Bunkley and (hopefully) Thomas to be supported by Unrein and McBean (just) to be joined by draft choice:
88. Kheeston Randall (6'5" / 305 / 25) from Texas
LB - Miller (SAM) and DJ Williams (WILL) to be joined by starter Dan Connor (MIKE) supported by Mohammed, Woodyard and Irving
CB - Bailey and (FA) Brandon Carr to start supported by Goodman, Harris, Vaughan and draft choice:
152. Donnie Fletcher (6'1" / 195 / 23) from Boston College
F/SS - Q.Carter and Moore, to be supported by Dawkins and Bush.
So to summarise my draft choices would be:
25. Dwayne Allen - TE
57. Doug Martin - RB
88. Kheeston Randall - DT
120. Philip Blake - C
129. Lucas Nix - RG
152. Donnie Fletcher - CB
216 Derek Dennis - LG
and FA acquisitions:
Brandon Carr - CB
Josh Johnson (or Dennis Dixon) - QB
Dan Connor - MLB

If we draft a TE in the first round I'll kiss your...Think defense there.
Doug Martin most likely won’t be at 57 either, so that doesn’t work.
Brandon Carr will probably want a big payday and there is no way EFX will do that with Champ’s contract. I think we will draft and develop one or 2…
Waiting on the Combines to decide on a DT wand where.
I really hope we draft a DE or sign a 2 or 2 1/2 star pass rush DE in FAs…

I got that you meant Champ
instead of Miller at CB. I don’t know who you mean by Q Johnson at FB. Where did Bruton, Vickerson and Moreno go? Are they cut? Needs work IMO.

Free Agents
Free agents- Dan Connor is a definate need with joe mays gone. Dennis Dixon is about as quality as brady quinn and will serve as a good back . But how about SS Charles Godfrey (he is 26) instead of Brandon Carr. John Fox is familiar with godfrey and he will come much less expensive. I think we can squeeze one more year out of the champ Bailey andre Goodman tandem (and a little bit of chris Harris).
Please no more Goodman
The only good thing about Goodman these last couple of years is he plays so soft that once in a while the QB gets overconfident and allows him to jump a route. He never turns and looks on a deep sideline pattern and is generally toasted on a regular basis. He’s scheduled to make 4.4 million in 2012 and 4.9 in 2013. If we could sign Carr to a 4 year deal for with the same kind of money that would be a huge raise for him and a Huge increase in talent for us. I’d go so far as to pay him a large bonus to make his 4 year deal worth a little over 5 million. He’s 25 years old and an excellent #2 CB with good size 6’ and 210ish. It’s always good to take a quality player from an AFC West team.

Charles Godfrey
On September 10, 2011, the Panthers re-signed Godfrey to a 5-year/$27.5 million contract extension with $12.4 million guaranteed. Unless they cut him recently. Brandon Carr= free agent. If I have to watch Andre Goodman much more I might puke.
If the broncos play against Shanchez and Ponder for 16 games, then I like Goodman
Only because those QBs are the only ones that make him look good. Also Goodman is way too soft. I hate watching him tackle. I would create a demo for youth football players on how not to tackle and Goodman/Bruton/Moore would be the center of that.

Cool mock
But I’m sorry to say I hate the Dwayne Allen pick. We’ve already got two young TE prospects in Virgil Green and Julius Thomas. I think they’re both going to blossom nicely after a complete off season.
I personally hope Janoris Jenkins falls in the 1st round past the Bengals who I think might take Lamar Miller and the Lions who I think might take Peter Konz. Donnie Fletcher isn’t bad but he’s probably not a starter in the NFL.
Big fan of every other pick though, nice work.

Who Would you pick? I'm in a Mock NFL draft over at Turf Show Times and I have the Denver Broncos as my team
On a whim, I made a deal with the Viking to move up to the 3rd overall pick in the 2012 Draft. Who would you pick if you had the #3 pick?

Don't need the QB options, so CB Morris Claiborne or RB Trent Richardson :-)

Would you draft Coples from NC?
I know that’s a bit high for him, but I would trade up for him. Have Coples, Miller, Dumervil, and Ayers—the playoff version/put him at DT— rushing the passer. Along with DJ Williams—two 5 sack seasons in a row— and my goodness, that pass rush would be nasty.
by tiderfootball09 on Feb 11, 2012 11:26 PM MST up reply actions
My only misgiving about Coples is the rumors about his lack of motivation at times.
The vid I’ve seen of him made me want him more than Robert Quinn when we drafted him last year.
The first two picks in the draft are Luck to the Colts and RGIII to the Redskins. Kalil is still available. I do like the Claiborne pick here, but your secondary looked strong enough last season to make me think FA would be the way for you to round it off. Brockers and Mercilius are great picks, but at #3 it may be a bit of a reach?
What about Blackmon? Even though Tebow didn’t pass that much last season, I have to think the pass will become a bigger part of his game in the future?

Update: I may have a deal with Cincinnati
I originally traded the Broncos pick at #25 and this year’s 2nd round pick, plus your 2013 1st round pick and a 5th rounder to the Vikings for the #3 pick in the draft.
Now I’m offering the #3 pick to the Bengals for their two 1st round picks and a 3rd round pick this year, plus a 2nd round and 4th in 2013… We’ll see, eh? :-)

Let's see if I follow this.
Our #25, 57, a 5th (was it SL’s or ours?) and 2013 1st round pick for #3. Now it is # 17, 21, 85 this year and a 2nd and a 4th in 2013.
So our 2013 1st round pick is now a 2nd and 4th. I can live with that.
Our 1st and 2nd this year becomes two 1sts this year. I love that. We need help now. Two picks in the early 20s and two picks in the late 80s should work.
17 Brockers
21 Lamar Miller
85 Mike Martin
89 CB-Hosley, Norman or Fleming

Tim Tebow
Burfict with #21?

No thanks.
At 89, sure, why not?

That would be epic!
I say no to Blackmon just because I like what the broncos have in DT and Decker. Also they can go to free agency for another WR
As far as needs go: CB, RB, MLB, Safety, and DT. Primarly I would go with CB and RB in the first round—with the two first round picks. I could see EFX going after a veteran safety in free agency along with a MLB—Dan Connor. In that case I’d go with Kirtpatrick or Jenkins with the first pick and Miller with the next pick.

matt khalil
He will be bpa and at a position of need. Imagine a starting line of Clady, Franklin, Walton, Kuper, Khalil that would be amazing and Beadles gives us great depth.
The thing I like about the #3 pick for team set at QB is that the entire draft is open to them in the current scenario
What is the Broncos biggest need? If you could fill one position that needs a “almost” guaranteed starter, who would it be?
I like the Kalil pick for Denver. You’ll have an OL that will give you latitude for years to come. Then there is Blackmon? Even though I don’t think he’s on the A.J. Green- Julio Jones level of last year’s draft, I think he’d be a great addition for your team. He can give you an “over the middle” or “mini post” guy that Tebow would drool to have on the team.
I think Richardson at #3 is to great a reach. I think Polk would be a better fit for your offense as it currently stands (poor man’s Ray Rice?)
Just know I’m trying my best to make the best pick(s) possible, even though it’s only for fun.

If you have the #3 pick, take Claiborne. If you make the trade with Cincy for both of their picks, you should take ILB Luke Kuechly and C Peter Konz (OG David DeCastro if he is on the board) if available.

I saw someone make a pretty good point about B.Quinn on an earlier post....:
They said (I’m paraphrasing here) that Quinn wants to stay a Bronco so, why sign any FA QB (Dixon or Johnson) when they would be comparable to B. Quinn. So, for 2012, let Tebow run it and let Webb & Quinn battle for #2.
Don’t forget about Squid (Syd)….didn’t see him mentioned.
Interesting mock…….
Thanks for a cool read!
you didn't even mention...
Warren, Sylvester, or Squid. What gives?
Playoffs!?!? Playoffs!?!? Don't talk about Playoffs!! Playoffs?!?!

This needs some work....
TE in the first round?? So we cut the starter Fells… and promote a guy that was inactive for almost every game after his injury? Think about that for a sec… if TE is so important, why cut the guy that did the most last year? Also.. we run a lot of 2 TE sets sometimes 3 TEs. We would need more than 3 TEs on the roster.
Then WR… you can barely play a game with only 4 WRs. You have us playing the season with 4.
Forgot about Squid at CB…. and if we get a FA CB… why would we keep Goodman? We would have to bench Harris to get him in the Nickel, which would be crazy at this point.
Forgot about warren and big vick at DT… and its interesting that you would neither address that position in FA nor the early rounds (1-2) in the draft.
Consider it a work in progress :-)
I don’t like Fells (or Rosario) and I think lower round choices (Thomas & Green) will come good, but like a higher choice, Allen, for them to challenge.
Guilty of forgetting Squid (maybe it’s the injuries) so happy to see Goodman move on!. Same with Sylvester at FB, but not sure Ty Warren will add anything next season (hope I’m wrong!)
Given the Tebow factor I’m happy with 4 WR and 3 TE’s of potential quality – there’s always FA in case of injuries.

Why would Dwayne Allen come in and be the starter? What makes him capable? Kyle Rudolph still is struggling to start and he was the consensus TE in the draft when he came out.
There is no Gronkowski in this draft or Jimmy Graham (who was grabbed in rd 3) so wasting a first round pick on one who may not learn the playbook or be an improvement over Fells is a waste of time. Fells needs to be brought back as the starter until Julius or Green can beat him out or until we realize they aren’t capable. A TE at #25 is a waste of a pick. Shoot, even Jason Witten was 3rd round and Gates was 6th round. Shannon Sharpe was 7th round. Horse beaten.
I also am not content with our DE corps. I love Doom, I like Ayers, Hunter is good depth but Harvey shouldn’t be on our roster anymore. I’d like to draft a DE to develop or bring one in via FA. We need help opposite Doom because when Miller is not on the line our pass rush suffers.
DT is the same. I like Bunkley and Thomas but I don’t want to rely on them both as fulltime starters especially with Unrein and McBean backing them up. One of our main problems last year was our inability to generate a pass rush up the middle. Drafting a 3rd round DT won’t change that. We need to either draft one higher that can be a starter day one or bring in another FA.
Love the Doug Martin pick but I doubt he’ll be there at 57. He seems to keep rising and if he runs fast at the combine he’ll be top of round 2 IMO.
I think we should draft a WR in round 3 or 4. Preferably someone big and fast.
Love what you’ve done at LB and I love the O-line depth you have in mind to draft.
I don’t think we’ll be signing a tier 1 FA at CB. I think we could look at Rashean Mathis but I’d be surprised if we signed Carr. I wouldn’t be opposed but I think the contract will be too large. I also don’t know why you got rid of SQUID. I think he makes a great nickel/dime CB and should stick.
Finally, I don’t think Moore will start and I think Dawk will retire. So I hope we bring in a FA S like Tyvon Branch.
Rant over :)
