Just a few notes. I do like DJ, im not a DJ basher, i just feel this move would be best for the team, and this is the height of his value. I have become a fan of moving down in this draft. Theres a lot of players who are great and fill needs in the middle rounds like the ones i selected. Also unsure about safety position, i think Rahim Moore could come back strong but hes a big ?. So let me know what you think....

Also
I am perfectly ok with keeping DJ, and letting woodyard walk if they are confident in guys like Irving and Mohammad. I still really like Lavonte David though, maybe just restructure the offensive picks. I love Trumaine too

DJ leaving won't happen. I think the last 3 years I've seen mocks of DJ being traded and every coaching staff still loves him.
Also I think we should keep Fells. Carlson won’t be any cheaper and he won’t be a big improvement considering the team doesn’t implement the TE as the fans want them too (at least not yet) and Tebow didn’t hardly get to them in the progressions last year due to the designed play calling (always looking for the deep ball) and his inexperience.
So until we actually fix the playcalling to incorporate more TE routes and/or help Tim develop through his progressions faster then I see no reason that Carlson helps us with that.
Fells is under rated IMO and was clutch for us when we needed him. I think he is perfect for our run first scheme until our young TEs can develop how we need them too (same with Tebow).

The games the broncos won, the TEs were involved usually. When the broncos lost or lost by a lot, the TEs were no where to be seen.

+1 Math
Every TE on our roster last regular season was a 1st time Bronco. Fells made too many clutch receptions to throw away after one year. Give them all an offseason and see what fruit it bears.
In this mock… would we be keeping Woodyard as a backup again? The consensus is he starts somewhere next season.

I'm also not a fan of David personally. We already have him in Wesley Woodyard (although maybe not as athletically talented).

David is far better in coverage and is a better blitzer.

Well, having seen both play I think David looks a far more comfortable and able player when in coverage compared to Woodyard and seems to pick blitzes up better than him as well.
I accept that David has not played at NFL level yet but their skill set is slightly different with David’s skills I believe being better in those areas.

Connor
I think Connor is a downgrade from Mays, isn’t he? Unless his stats this year were falsely low for some reason. I’d rather keep Mays as a quality backup to Irving, assuming Irving makes a step forward.
I do agree with letting either Wesley or DJ go, and acquiring a WILL somehow.
Mays
Mays was awful in coverage, which is why they put him in a two-down role. He also missed more than too many tackles. But aside from that he actually had very good run defense.
I’m not saying he’s a good linebacker, but he didn’t damage the defense as much as our safety play did. But still, just because he was a weak link doesn’t mean other linebackers aren’t worse. Connor is one of the lowest-ranked starting linebackers in the league according to several stats sites I checked, and he ranks below Mays.
Probably because he doesn't start...
He’s been a backup to Jon Beason since he came into the league. Only started 11 games last season when Beason got hurt? Everything I’ve read from experts say he played solid football and deserves to go get a starting job somewhere
by broncos7life on Feb 13, 2012 1:16 AM MST up reply actions
I think Connor is very overrated. I would much prefer we target Rudd or Jackson (from the Browns). Or work on moving a talented OLB to MLB.

Jackson has expressed strong interest to stay in Cleveland even under the franchise tag.
Rudd would be a nice pickup. But why exactly do you think Connor is “very overrated”? What have you seen that everybody else hasn’t. Like I said above, from what I’ve read, he’s played solid football whenever he got the chance.
by broncos7life on Feb 13, 2012 1:32 AM MST up reply actions
Your probably right about Jackson. It wouldn’t hurt to make a play for him though if he were to be available. As for Connor, I do think he is overrated by many of the fans here. I think he wouldn’t be much of a upgrade over Mays. He struggles in coverage and doesn’t have the awareness IMO that we need at MLB. If we were to bring him in I would be okay with it. I just think we could do better than him, because there are other options. However, I’m sure all these posts and speculation about who will be MLB will be meaningless when Irving steps in and takes over at MLB.

Every draft analysis I follow races about laconte David and EFX has expressed interest.
The argument we shouldn’t get a tight end because we don’t use them currently is so dumb. The pats didn’t use tight end much but them they got some and they are vital for that offense. Carlson is a big upgrade over Fells and should come cheap. If Julius Thomas pans out then we have tough matchups across the board to deal with.
Von Miller for DPOY '12
by BroncofanfromBoston on Feb 12, 2012 6:36 PM MST via mobile reply actions
it's not that they don't use them. Its that we drafted 2 and still haven't used them. drafting one in the first round isn't going to change that.
Our coaching staff is. The Pats drafted those TEs with usage in mind they didn’t draft them and all of a sudden they just started using them. They had a plan. I imagine our FO also has a plan to use them but either they didn’t develop as fast or they weren’t first in the progression.
If we draft a 1st round TE I’m ok with it but I don’t see a single TE in this draft (who is projected to go in rd 1 or 2) who is remotely near the talent of Gronk or Hernandez or even Jimmy Graham and Hernandez was a 4th round pick. Graham was a 3rd round pick. Witten was a 3rd round pick and Gates was a 6th round pick.

I think Irving is the starting MLB in 2012
with a off season under his belt, he will be able to start!
Also I would almost bet that Denver doesn’t sign this many name FA’s! They will sign a bunch of UDFA and work them in.
Kansas Bob
some of them will be
but I suspect we’ll see a good amount of roster turnover this year. There are plenty of McDaniels boys still on the roster, and we couldn’t really afford to cut loose of them last year due to the lockout. This, I believe, is the year we see some of these players… some of this deadwood… carved off the team.
It would be awful hard to replace most of these guys with UDFA’s…. we will be forced to scour the pro talent pool to bring in John Fox/Del Rio players.
These are the players, I feel, are a MUST to resign:
Matt Prater (K) ~ Brodrick Bunkley (NT) ~ Wesley Woodyard (LB)
The rest can stay or go…. we can make due without them. Of course that’s not going to happen, we have to resign more than those three or else too many unfamiliar players would be on the roster next year. But I really think we can get by without most of them.
Secondary Priorities:
Daniel Fells (TE) ~ Dante Rosario (TE) ~ Mario Haggan (LB) ~ Spencer Larsen (FB) ~ Marcus Thomas (DT) ~ Eddie Royal (WR/RET).
I also think that Knowshon will be unloaded somehow… someway. Perhaps someone will give us a 4th/5th for a young RB, who’s had some bad luck in this league? I also think the world won’t end if we ship DJ and make Woodyard the starting WILL.

I would rather have DJ over the 77th pick. A Starting WLB for a 3rd or 4th string WR goes not sound like a good trade to me. The only way I would trade DJ to the Eagles is if Samuels is coming to Denver. David and Reyes would be a good pick. Hypothetically speaking, I wonder who the Vikings would be targeting at #25 that is worth giving up those two picks?

I like it...
Love the Rainey pick. Don’t mind losing DJ as long as WW stays. Call it age/current captain/and known good qualities vs experience/lack of good judgement. If the trade is made would absolutely bounce with Jermichael selection in the second, even with Rainey later on.
Keep Fells. He’s proven to be able to make the catch and TT does have familiarity where Carlson would have to build it. Probably similar in cost vs Carlson anyways. Why we got so little out of our Young TEs really bothers me. I liked the selections and hope they play up next year.
Reyes won’t fall to 57 after the combine. But if he does good selection. Still most cried foul when EFX paid no attention to DT in last years draft. The group blasted the negative expectations. McBean can go with Warren back. Me thinks del Rio will Coach this group up. Remember Nunnely is still there too. I dig that guy and believe with another year our DL will be improved even more.
Larson will be resigned unless his injury history has struck a bad chord with the staff. McClain is the same thing as Spence yet Spence is a wrecking ball on STs. Am luke warm on a change here. However a Tolbert signing would be interesting.
Royal can go with James and Rainey added. Sign Bowe, Colston or Garçon and let Willis go. His lack of blocking and horrid penalties can go in his bag. I like McNutt too. Lets see what Goodwin is all about.
Zbikowski is a good pick up. Past that I don’t see EFX moving away from Bruton/Carter/Moore. I just wonder about Moore’s confidence moving forward. I’d welcome Carr from the Chefs. (Tribute to Kaptain for that and Tolbert).
I’d like to see a focus on the OL and DL/OLB in the draft with a sprinkling of speed demon RB/slot/WRs thrown in.
As far as CBs go…. We have Squid and Vaugn coming back plus the emergence of Harris. His role in the nickel is perfect for him. I do not see him as a true #2 CB. If I am wrong then good for us all. Carr is a legit #2 now. I don’t hate Goody, Its just Carr is a definate upgrade especially with age. The draft on CBs is a complete gamble. In the last ten years we’ve wasted how many picks on CBs? Fill the position in FA.
Mays reminds me of a certain other nightmare of a middle backer we had…. Irving come on down!

as opposed to…. what was his name…. the dude who’s helmet flew off after every tackle…. most of them coming after a RB ran for 15+ yards? OH YEAH… Nate friggin Webster. We’ve came a long, long way since Al Wilson, folks. A long way down.

Sir why did you have to utter that name?
It wasn’t just the helmet coming off. Worse was the stupid prancing and over the top celebration to doing his job when he actually did it. I still cringe…
Mays has deffinately made a few pops, but it seems more like the running back running into his space rather than him moving to make a play. I am sure it sounds like I hate the guy but that isn’t true. He is a good guy and maybe a focused stint on STs would be good for him and the Broncos.

Not too shabby
Change the 35th pick to Dontari Poe and the 77th pick to Tommy Streeter or Brian Quick and you’ve got a winning draft.
TurfSharks.com
Dontari Poe would be a great pick at 35
But we need him at least 20 lbs. lighter. He’s a bit too heavy to be effective late in games at a Mile High. I think UT is a bigger need than another NT. Bunkley anchored nicely at the NT last season. I’d rather stay put at 25 and get Cox.

A few things on some of your comments
Trading DJ right now is the best time to trade DJ if ever. Look im not a DJ basher, I like the guy and appreciate everything he has done, but like when the Pats traded Seymour, its smarter to do it at the height of their value. He has a decently sized contract we would also be taking off our hands which could free up space to sign another player or do whatever with it. Overall tho, I think we let Woodyard walk if he gets a starting job offer and maybe take a WILL this year, but it probably will be next year.
About the tight ends. A lot of your expectations are ridiculous. U expect a guy who has played football for 1 year to come and be an immediate threat in the NFL along with a 7th round pick. I like our youngsters but jeesh, they were rookies in a shortened off season give it a break. And go ask any qb in the NFL, i guarentee u all of them would say a big TE who can catch the football is a young qbs best friend. Think about how many big targets we would have with a guy like Carlson. Him, DT, Decker, JT and more all over 6’3. I dont know how good of a blocker Carlson is but i think we should definitely pursue a vet TE who can block and catch as a number 1 competition for Julius and Green.
Last note on Mario Fannin. Is this guy Torain 2.0…hasnt stepped into a pres-season game and hes already a beast. C’mon, i have hopes for him to but he wont be more than our third or 4th running back behind Mcgahee and a draft pick or two this year. Maybe they envision him as FB who knows, i hope he can make plays but we have bruisers in Mcgahee and Tebow and who else knows who we will add.

that’s not to say he would be a bad signing… but other than the Carolina – John Fox connection, I’m not sure what Conner has done (besides his Penn St. days) to warrant so much love. Honestly, I don’t believe he would be that much of an upgrade over Joe Mays. I wish 4-3 MIKE’s grew on trees. Boy…. we sure could use an Al Wilson to go with Von and DJ.

Your missing some players
No where in your post did I see Ty Warren, Kevin Vickerson, or Knowshon Moreno mentioned. They’re all still under contract. Warren and Vick are going to be a factor at DT. Knowshon, in spite of all his shortcomings is under contract the bulk of which already been paid out. He probably stays just because he is a cheap option and offers some continuity and decent production. You have an aweful lot of turnover in your mock, probably a little too much for my taste. Signing six FAs is quite a stretch and I doubt we have that many targets.
"You’re only great if you win something. I mean, Alexander wasn’t Alexander the Mediocre or Alexander the Average. He was Alexander the Great, and there’s a reason for it."-Shannon Sharpe
First off warren is listed, Moreno and vickers on are cuts. Moreno’s DUI gets him out and vickerson I don’t think is very good, huge disappointment this past year and I don’t think he bears out warren for a roster spot.

Don't think he has to beat out Warren for a roster spot
Considering they were both penciled in as the starters in 2011 (Warren at the NT and Vick at the UT). It’s hard to impress when you go on IR after only four games. Vickerson was the only DT initially re-signed by EFX, that should tell you something. If anything, Warren is a bigger question mark because he hasn’t played a down in over two seasons.
Moreno will be back, much to the chagrin of a lot of people around here. It makes no sense to cut him loose right now. The only way he goes anywhere is if he’s traded. You don’t let Moreno walk without getting something in return. Sure, he hasn’t lived up to where he is drafted, but he still has some value as a player. With that being said, there probably isn’t a team out there that will trade for him. He’ll play out his rookie contract with Denver, and who knows after that?

Signing 6 free agents is far fr a stretch. Last year we signed warren, fells, Rosario, McGahee in a short FA plus re signed a lot of our own guys and made a few trades. I really have a tough time figuring out how these signings are that costly. Most are quality depth except for Carlson.
Von Miller for DPOY '12
by BroncofanfromBoston on Feb 13, 2012 4:50 PM MST via mobile reply actions
Here's my take on your FA pickups
TE John Carlson-SEA. This is a luxury pick up. Fells did a decent job. Rosario came on towards the end of the season, but he’s probably on the bubble. Look for Julius Thomas to make a bigger impact in 2012 after a real off-season to get healthy. TE is not as big a need as some people claim. I’d rather see them pick up a veteran wideout to mentor our young guys. Hines Ward would be an awesome grab.
FB Le’Ron Mcclain-KC Could be a good pickup, if Spencer Larsen doesn’t come back, but Larsen is mor economical and gets the job done. I’d rather roll with an up to speed Larsen than wait on getting McClain there. Sylvester was signed, so who knows? Continuity is very undervalued by some around here.
MIKE Dan Connor-CAR. Over-rated, it’s questionable as to wether he would be an upgrade over Mays. I look for Irving to be the starter in 2012 at any rate. This guy is not as good as some here are making him out to be. I’d rather keep Mays for STs/Backup than roll the dice on Connor.
S Tom Zbikowski-BAL We can probably do better here, but I agree, we need to pick up a solid veteran SS. It hasn’t been mentioned, but Harris could see some time at Safety with Squid and Vaughn returning from injury. There is a log jam at Nickel back and this could be a move that could sure up the back end.
C/G Mike Pollak-IND I would rather fill the depth out on the Oline through the draft. Don’t be too suprised if we stand pat with the Olineman we have other than Hockstein. Hock is verastile, but the expense of his contract makes him expendable. More value could be added to this position through the draft or UDFA. They may opt to keep him around for another season if a better option isn’t available.
Yeah, the Broncos signed four free agents in 2011, but they also had a lot more holes to fill at that point than they do now. I think they’ll focus on re-signing the talent already in Denver and pick up FAs only as a last resort. I see three positions that would benefit from a FA aquisition, QB, SS, and WR. EFX is going to build in the Draft and augment through FA. You don’t augment by turning over positions that don’t need it.
"You’re only great if you win something. I mean, Alexander wasn’t Alexander the Mediocre or Alexander the Average. He was Alexander the Great, and there’s a reason for it."-Shannon Sharpe
No way Mays is cut
He may not be ideal as a starting MLB, but he plays hard and is a ST demon. I doubt Polk lasts to the 3rd round (IMO), I also don’t know why KC would let go of McClaine, they just signed him. Dan Conner is also a bit of a reach, especially considering his injury history, seems like of a waste money, as he is one concusion away from being out for the season.

Let me Counter
Mays isnt cut-hes let go. And look Dan Connor doesnt have to be the guy but we need a vet MIKE to give Irving competition and be a backup. Mays or Connor will do. Mays may get offers elsewhere, Connor could be cheaper.
About the Wide Receivers. We are a run first team, we like to use multiple tight end sets so imagine Carlson with JT that could be matchup nightmare with decker and DT on the outside. You plan on giving two mid-late round sophomores the starting jobs. No way, I would not be disapointed to resign Fells which is what I think they will end up doing, but Carlson could be cheap and is a better blocker than Fells.
KC signed Mcclain to a 1 year deal and they already pay a lot of money to the running backs they have. They also have much higher priority players to resign. Spencer Larsen is ok at best. OK blocker, below average athleticism, below average receiving skills or rushing ability. McClain did not get the ball much last year but remember we are a running team and he is a great blocking back.
Vickerson was garbage in the time he did play in last year tho. Granted it was 4 games, but he wasnt close to ass effective at 290 lbs. That was a huge mistake. I think we resign Thomas and Bunkley and draft a DT or 2 early on then they fight for the position.
Last note: I think they will actually look for vet O Lineman because of the youth we already have. Spend at least the early draft picks on defense and a couple weapons for Tebow. Plus i had us drafting a guard in the fifth.

Wow, we're a little defensive? No need to be, it's all just fun speculation!
Semantics man! Cut, let go, whats the difference? We already have a Vet Mike in the system that can play special teams. It is more feasible to resign Mays at the minimum than to pay Connor or someone else starter pay only to have them stuck behind Irving. Mays may walk, if he does, they’ll have to pick someone up, but I doubt it will be Connor. It will more than likely someone they can get at the veteran minimum.
We are a run first team, but our WR corps is a much bigger need than TE. If we need extra blockers in the run game, we can always throw Clark and Harris out there and have a true Jumbo package. Its not really worth it to import talent to be an extra blocker. Fells and Thomas would be about the same as Carlson and Thomas. Fells is very underrated IMO and he already knows the offense. They’ll probably let Rosario walk, but he was picked up as insurance after being waived once.
Larsen is still developing as a Fullback. He’s younger and cheaper than McClain. Fullback is not a high priority position to upgrade because it has become a situational position at best. McClain’s production in 2011 was not much better than Larsen’s. This would be a waste of a pickup.
Like it or not, Vickerson is still under contract. He may get cut, but then again, he more than likely is sticking around. Too much has been made of him dropping weight. 290 is not a bad weight to be at for a UT playing in Denver. He didn’t have a chance to show anything in the four and a half games he played in. That is too small of a sample size to objectively rate the play of a DT. He was having his best game of the season when he got injured. Again, he’s under contract, cutting him doesn’t make any sense unless he has health issues and a trade is not very likely.
The only way they bring a vet in on the Oline is to start. We already have a good mix of veteran talent and youth on the Oline; another young guy is not going to upset the balance. It’s cheaper to draft Oline depth late or pick up a UDFA, that way they can be groomed the way the team sees fit. Continuity is key, especially when it comes to the Oline, so I doubt we’ll see much movement there. They probably let Hock go and replace him with a younger, cheaper contract.

One thing on Vick though. Nobody knows what he weighs now.

More than likely
He has gained some weight back. Vickerson lost that weight pretty fast, so he probably had it to lose. I am sure he was more fit at 290 than he was at nearly 330. If he adds 15 lbs. of muscle back to that 290, he is going to be at an ideal weight and in ideal shape to play UT. I don’t think he went rogue when he did it. He knew going in he’d have to be quicker going from a 3-4 to a 4-3. Smaller, quicker tackles are preferred in Fox’s system, especially when you play the majority of your games at a Mile High.
