Denver
Salary-cap situation: $50.735 million under.
Comment: The Broncos can do whatever they want. It begins with in-house free agents Brodrick Bunkley and Matt Prater. The new Denver regime has said it will not spend wildly just to spend, so don’t expect any crazy sprees.

Yeah I imagine they'll try and stay below the 120 mil cap number even though they have extra to spend.
Makes no sense to use it just cause we have it. That was a huge problem in the past. Keep the money available to re-sign our own developing talent when their rookie contracts are up so they don’t have to go looking elsewhere.
Tim Tebow wears 3WM and drinks Tuscan whole milk.
Wouldnt mind going after 1 big money guy
I agree build through the draft, but you need a healthy balance of both to win.

The other key note from ESPN...
KC is 63 million under which means there could sign Carr and Bowe for sure.
Oakland is 11 million over so there is going to be more cut and restrutures. Also one of Bush or McFadden could easily be gone form there…good news.
SD is only 9 million under. So we could see some cuts and as far as V-JAckson and Tolbert, both could be very hard to keep for SD.
No there is no need to spend "wildly" as suggested, but
Denver has a golden opportunity to upgrade several positions with younger and better talent. Spending wildly like the Eagle did last year is foolish especially with a team like the Broncos rebuilding. We have at least 4-5 positions that can be upgraded form the 1-2 star talent level we have to 2 1/2-3 1/2 star talent. How many do EFX try to acquire? It will depend on how much Pat Bowlen is willing to spend, but each and every one of us knows for a fact that having too much youth at every position leads to disappointing performances all around. Infusion of veteran talent is a must if the team wants to compete, and we’ll know if Bowlen is serious about building a contender in about a month.

I liked the addition of the cap guy
keep hearing he’s aggressive, so hopefully he can make a few contracts work out

I agree...
Guys that are just finishing up their rookie contracts would be great. Probably in their mid 20s.. young enough physically and experienced enough to make good decisions (on and off the field hopefully.)
Guys like that don’t come cheap, but they could be starters for us for 4-8 seasons maybe more.
Don't we have to spend 90% of the cap???
If that’s the case we have to spend at least $38 mil to comply with the NFL rules. 90% of the cap we would have to spend about $108 mil.
Woody Paige said
that the Broncos plan on getting at least 2 mid level FA’s. I doubt they’ll wow anyone but I’m thinking we’ll pick up a solid vet or 2 at positions of need to team-friendly contracts.
C'mon, join us, there's plenty of koolaid on the Broncos bandwagon for everyone!

I believe he said
That the 2.5M saved from the Orton cut, would absolutely go towards acquiring two mid level FAs.
That doesn’t preclude the possibility of further acquisitions. Personally, I think that kind of comment is bunk. It’s all one pool of money, isn’t it? It’s like when politicians say that money from one revenue pool will absolutely go towards a pet project. It’s all one revenue pool, and one cost pool as far as I’m concerned and one big effort not to go over budget. (Not that politicians seem to care about that kind of thing any more but at far as I know the Broncos don’t have the ability to print money at the moment).

There is absolutely no excuse not to address all needs
With between 25 to 35 million in salary cap money and 6 to 8 million alotted to the draft! We need to find the weak area’s in the draft and address those in free agency! We should get Tyvon Branch SS from Oak, Dan Conner MLB, Jason Jones DE on Defense, Offense John Carlson TE, Mike Tolbert RB and Early Doucet WR and Dennis Dixon QB! Then fill in with the draft with DTx2, CB, RB, WR, MLB, DE, OL, QB
IMO EFX does not keep the Tebow-offense, so Dixon is out.
Kreese and Lawrence will decide if Tim Tebow can develop into our future.

The Kansas City Star considers CB Brandon Carr the more replaceable of the Chiefs’ top two free agents, the other being Dwayne Bowe.
Beat writer Adam Teicher doesn’t know what to make of the team’s interest in free agent Stanford Routt, suggesting it’s either message-sending to Carr or a legitimate attempt to replace him. Routt will be in Kansas City on Tuesday. Teicher seems to believe Bowe will be getting the Chiefs’ franchise tag. If so, the 26-year-old Carr is going to strike it filthy rich in free agency.

Maybe the reason why they have expressed interest in Routt?

I’d be stoked for Carr, that guy is solid. Carr in, Goodman out.
Von Miller once sacked three different quarterbacks, in three different games, in three different zip codes... in the exact same moment in time.
Welcome to the DoomerMill.
Why cut goodman??
Carr in… keep Goodman. Why weaken yourself when you’ve just strengthened yourself?

Because you'd be paying your nickle back (Goody in this scenario) around $4M/yr
I'm officially an idiot. We didn't need Quinn to win dumbass. (Slap to the face!) Great job Tebow and Team! After years of mediocrity we fans deserve a pat on the back for staying true, too. So I hereby take credit for this win for being such a great fan... even having doubted Him once ;D
Goodman earns $4M??
Wow – okay – fair call. Restructuring would be an option. I just want to see the depth chart become deeper.

Agreed
I just checked to make sure and Rotoworld has him listed at $4.62M for the year. He’s in the top 5-10 in terms of salaries on our team…. which puts him high on the cut list too I would imagine.

Thanks for following up Rodney
That’s a shame his salary’s so high. I like him well enough and he’d be in the top 64 CBs in the game. We can definitely upgrade but having him as depth makes us better. If the price is right.

I agree with your take on him a lot
He’s an average starter. He’s a guy I’d like to keep. But the money makes it tough.
As of today, I’d lean toward releasing him very soon to give him a chance to get on with another team early. Add a running back through free agency and draft two DTs and two CBs in the first five rounds. Then you could let the two rooks and Chris Harris fight it out to earn the #2 spot. I’d feel comfortable with that scenario, especially with a 1st round CB.
I could see a re-negotiation being a good idea for the team, but I’m not sure he’d take much of a pay cut.

I agree with this
Pick up a veteran DT and SS in free agency. We’re a better team.

Build through the draft and save that money for guys in-house.
I don’t want the broncos to be like the Cowboys, Redskins, and Eagles where they rather spend big money on a free agent rather then keep their own talent. All the best players on the team should be from the draft and not free agency.

I agree
but adding a key piece here and there via free agency is a must.
by Scotty Payne on Feb 13, 2012 7:05 PM MST up reply actions
That's what good teams do, but when we can replace some of our starters that are 2 star and below then an infusion of veteran talent has to be made.
It all can’t be down through the draft our else we’ll end up with a lot of 1-2-3 qnd 4 year players and no veterans to balance out the team. I don’t say scrap every one of them and start from scratch. but getting and upgrade over a few players we have is how to build a team for success. I wouldnt go after 4 or 5 star talent that is seeking to get rich, because they rarely help a team compete. I think what EFX will do with our new capologist is target to 2 and 3 star talents to replace the 1s and 1 1/2s and even 2s who are aging. Example: Goodman has been a servicable #2 CB even if he doesn’t have Champ Bailey’s eliteness, but he is 33 years old and slowing every year now. Getting a 2 1/2 to 3 star that is still young might make a lot of sense and have rewards with it. Maybe get a 2 star safety to help mentor the youth if BDawk retires…That’s all, don’t get all crazy spending for elite players who want a huge payday.

only "eiite" player id want is Mario Williams
a player like him, is worth spending the money on. But i agree going after mid level guys
by Scotty Payne on Feb 13, 2012 7:49 PM MST up reply actions
I agree but would add
Mike Tolbert and Brandon Carr to that list. Are both of them “elite” probably not by themselves but could help make this “team” elite.
It's like the movie Angels in the Outfield.... but this time it's Broncos in the Endzone

I agree with that.
One thing I like what the broncos have done the last decade, is bring in good caliber Safeties. John Lynch was a steal as well as Dawkins. I expect EFX to do the same. Also it’s nice to get guys like Bunkly for a ham sandwich.
On a different but similar note since I mentioned the Eagles, the broncos have done a nice number on the them. Between getting good production out of Dawkins for three years; Mays was decent considering the broncos gave up nothing and plus the Eagles could have used Mays. Buckhalter had a good year plus half of the 2010, and then Bunkly. I wonder who’s the next player the broncos could rip off from the Eagles. Sammuel perhaps? It simply amazes me.

Elway
He has expressed that he wants to build this team through the draft, but I doubt we’ll ignore free agency. This team is just not going to take stupid risks like signing Jarvis Green to a big contract, or giving average players way too much money just because they fill a need and fit the system. A guy like Brandon Carr is 26 years old and if he gets a five or six year deal, you could get the best years our of his entire career. To me, that is an investment worth making in addition to bringing back guys like Prater, Colquitt, Bunkley, Woodyard, etc.
Just remember...CAP and CASH are two different things...
CAP allocations are not the same as cash available….the math is so weird. What I trust is this: less the draft reserve and contract commitments, Mr B gives EFX the max they can spend. He doesnt cut corners. Last year the CASH out was very close to the CAP – so no one is pocketing $$ profits…thats not his style. I for one am glad they wont spend $$ on high FAs who bust later after they have their dough…and Im glad Champ was taken care of…THATS where the $$ should go…I like the consensus approach and process EFX have now for personnel…its BPA or Best Process Around!
