CHEAP SKATES
CHEAP! Its not something anybody really likes being called. Another way to look at is the old saying "you cant take it with you". I am becoming increasingly convinced that our FO is either putting up another infamous smoke screen, or they really are being "cheap" follow along if you feel the same.... ya thats Dale Carter haha
All I keep hearing from the FO and now our very knowledgeable fan base is how we need to not spend money on big name FA's. Well I am not in this boat. Do I think we should build through the draft? Well hell ya I do. My question is why does that have any effect on pursuing big time FA's?
I understand the saving money for the future idea, I just don't agree. We came within two games of the super bowl last year! LAST YEAR! Why wouldn't we think we are but a few good to great players away from getting to the dance?
Yes, I also understand we were 8-8, but I believe with Tebow we are much more like a 10-11 win team. SO why not spend the money. Im not saying go all eagles, but damn. Some of the posters on this site act like its coming out of their allowance. This league is a win now league. That's why Orton is gone. So why save money for years down the road when a Carr/Williams/Tolbert or any other FA that could come in and give us a huge lift right now.
So yes I do agree that spending money on over the hill players or one hit wonders is a bad idea, but..........
If you pay second tier money, you get second tier players....you then get a second tier team.

How many big name free agents have the Packers and Giants signed the past couple years?
These teams have mostly home grown talent. Same with the Packers, in fact looking at all the playoff teams most of them have been built through the draft. Free agents are usually overpaid so there is not great value. How did the Eagles and Jets do this year? Not awesome. Find role players through free agency but the core of the team should be through the draft.

Right
Buying up all the top iter free agents worked so well for Philly last year. Its now how much you spend, its how smart you spend it.
In 1996, after the Jacksonville debacle in the playoffs, Elway knew as well as anyone that we desperately needed to add Neal Smith from Kansas City in the off season. So much so that he gave up part of his salary to enable the team to sign Smith. He was also part of the group that worked to get Smith to finish hsi career as a Bronco.
The result, two back to back Super Bowl wins. There is no one more competitive than John Elway. Ask Dan Reeves if you don’t believe me. He once stated that Elway always wants to win, even if its tiddly winks, he wants to beat you.
No one knows the value of a key free agent more than John Elway and the rest of this FO. Your worry about them is misplaced. and, frankly, uninformed.

Faith grounded in reality and history..
is not blind. And do I trust Elway et al more than your baseless criticism? You bet I do. History is relplete with those who sought to “buy” team or a title in free agency. But the failures in doing so far outnuimber the sucesses.
I trust those who have been through the process successfully rather than go on a rant proposing sepnding other people’s money by someone who hasn’t been there at all.

wow.
I imagine you probably trust Elway a lot, I do too. However, doesnt mean he is always right. And news flash there kiddo but we pay all our players so we “buy” our team just like everyone else. Also where in my post do I say just throw money at the problem? I said if you got the money and the need….spend it
by TRUTH_HURTS on Feb 14, 2012 12:15 PM MST up reply actions
nice deflection
But you know as well as I do what the term “buy a team” means, and its not that we pay the players.
When if comes to personnel decisions, yes, I do trust Elway to make good decisions. Now show me where that means I think “he is always right”. This team has not been shy about spending money..ever. And yet the “we have it so we need to spend it” philosephy has led to far more mistakes than good results.
My point and my sole point is that Elway has had the experience at player aquistion and specifically how much the RIGHT player can add to a team. Your fear that he does not, or your fear that someone is being cheap for cheap’s sake is, in fact misplaced.

Never did he say to sign a bunch of big name free agents.
In fact, in the post, he clearly said that we should avoid going on a spree like the Eagles did. What he said was that the Broncos should explore all options, especially good players in areas of need, rather than settling for second or third tier talent. A couple nice signings like Carr or Tolbert plus role player signings would be perfect.
by broncos7life on Feb 14, 2012 4:20 PM MST up reply actions 1 recs
And what I said was
I am certain they will explore all options, because, unlike the suggestion in the OP, Elway and company will never settle for mediocre instead of winning, but that they will do it right.
He did express some fear and worry that this team would be cheap and willing to settle for mediocre results. THAT is uninformed.

I totally agree that we need to spend more in FA.
We also need to build through the draft, but one of the nice things about having cap room is that we can cherry-pick from teams that have had a competent front office over the last 3 or 4 years. Someone is going to get those FA’s that the good teams can’t afford to keep, and it might as well be us.
EFX have done a good job so far of evaluating talent, and I believe that will continue. But I also believe that Bowlen needs to spend up to the salary cap. We are two players away on defense (Goodman and Mays) from being a top ten unit. A young power RB would help this offense immensely. And an upgrade at center would make our running game unstoppable. These are facts, and we can’t just rely on the draft to solve these problems.
Draft picks are hit-or-miss. Proven NFL starters are not. We need to get a proven NFL starter at CB to play across from Champ and at MLB. If EFX think Irving can be that guy, great. But we don’t have that guy on our roster right now at CB. And we don’t have a proven NFL starter at RB, like Tolbert or Micheal Bush.
Come on Bowlen, we are close. Spend the money.
Oh, you were finished? Oh, well, allow me to retort!

Griz…if you say that Irving, per coaches, maybe the answer at MIKE then why not Harris at CB for the same reason? How about Bruton and Carter and Moore at safety. IMO Ben Garland is a player. BUT hey I agree, lets see what the coaches put together with the personell evaluators. These people are called scouts.

By the way, correct me if Im wrong
But didnt we only win 4 games in 2010? What friggin miracles are YOU talking about? lol.
My other question is, why even worry or say something like that? There are NO such things as miracles. The TEAM did what they needed to do to beat the other team. There was nobody at Buffalo Wild Wings, hitting a button to trip players and send it to overtime, God didnt really reach down and guide the ball to Deckers or Thomas’s hands or blow sand in the eyes of a tackler so Tebow can get the 2PC. Yeah we could have lost more games, but we didnt. We could have lost most of them, but didnt. There were alot of times we should have gone for it but didnt, times we should have kicked the field goal but didnt. Quit worrying about what MIGHT have been.

Draft picks are hit-or-miss. Proven NFL starters are not.
Draft picks are guesses (Yea, even for John Elway.) . FA are proven.
As to talent evaluators? One example: had EFX had their way “our best chance to win” would have gotten us where? Back to a top four draft pick and zero playoffs, I won’t go into other questiobnable moves. The FO hasn’t proven anything yet. This is not being negative, but perhaps more objective than many,

All you really need to do is look at what our FO (with Xanders) has done in the past and what they've said they're going to do and you should not expect them to bring in any high priced FAs.
I’m sure they’ll kick the tires on everyone. Last year they brought in a few guys who we really wanted but they were out priced. I imagine this year will be much the same. I think we’ll look at Mario Williams, etc (whoever is available that can help us) but we won’t be willing to offer what other teams will.
Tim Tebow wears 3WM and drinks Tuscan whole milk.
And to take that a step further Math
Xanders has a limit to what he is to be spending at each position. I’m sure Doom’s contract is not the sort of contract they want. It limits the spending they want to do on the DL in general I believe. Champ’s contract is very high also. Going forward though I doubt we will see any sort of a contract like that again. The new cap guy will take care of that. In fact he may try to rework Champ and Doom’s contracts. We have one of the youngest teams right now and if we want to be able to keep them around after their rookie contracts we will have to plan ahead now.

I think we’d all love Mario Williams or Arian Foster. I just don’t think we’ll pay for it. It’s not like we’re one piece away from the SB. I think in our case we’ll probably end up taking 3 mediocre players and hope one of them turns out to be better than that i.e. Bunkley, McGahee from last year.

They may sacrifice Williams now that they know what they have in Reed and Watt...
Williams would probably require an Elvis Dumervil type contract which was what, 60MIL? No way a team like the Broncos could have a 120MIL plus the DTs salaries tied up on the front four. I think we are already 2nd from the top in payouts to the DLine…I would love to have Williams though and if Sullivan can rangle a deal ladden with incentitives then why not. One thing we can’t have enough of is pass rush pressure…

Again...CAP and CASH are two different things...
Dont forget dead money, payoffs etc…all hit the budget. Last year, they spent to the cap. I like the FO consensus process for personnel evaluation. They were very selective on guys like Warren and paid Champ…AND as the Team stunk in 2010, they hired guys for one year…prove it or get benched – Harvey etc and not afraid to bench rookies…but patient as they had no odd season…whats NOT to like? Bowlen is NOT cheap…but Shanny blew bucks on busts and that wasnt smart. I think EFX will again be smart and pay and develop our own guys…So the track record suggests a good outcome. Lastly, Elway is too competitive to be cheap or mess this up. No one is ever 100%, but I think we are on a good track..

I hate Free Agency and anyone who read my posts at this time last year will attest to that.
While I understand that FA can be important, it’s incredibly overrated. Most players are free agents for a reason. They either suck, are overrated, have issues, or are demanding way more money then they are worth. I hate FA and have hated FA since the Shanny days. I always threw up a little everytime I saw him bring in another overpaid, overrated player. It’s just my philosophy for sports in general and not just football. You can disagree with it all you want but this isn’t something I agree with just because EFX seem to follow the same philosophy. I blasted EFX last year for signing Ty Warren for 10 million but I also gave them credit for getting him on a 2 year deal.
That being said this is one of the few FA classes that generally excite me. For the first time in a long time there are players I think are worth splurging a little for but I still think we need to spend smart. I’d love to get my hands on Vincent Jackson or Dwayne Bowe and a solid corner or DT but the price has to be right. I don’t wanna be tied to these guys for 6 years at 8-9 million a year which is what they’d probably be asking for.
As for cheap stakes, don’t forget the Broncos gave Ty Warren 10 million last year, McGahee 20 million, and Bailey 40 million. That’s 70 million on FA’s right their.
And now for something completely different

Shanny FAs were brutal.
At least he hit on some of them though. The drafts were worse. Always one punt returner away from the SB. Two things he got right, Howard Griffith and TD.

John Elway and Co. made three huge upgrade already this young offseason that could bring significant rewards.
capologist CBA guru Mike Sullivan was probably the best acquisition as he is known for wheeling and dealing player contracts and making them feel happy with less. Contracts laced with incentitives and bonuses, plus back end money and little up front money designed to make them desirable and willing to sign…Can’t wait to see how they get it done this year, because in the past we have had big name talents come in for visits only to leave for another team. If the Broncos weren’t intersted in signing them why would they even waste their time? Might the reason be former capologist Bluem and how he dealt with the players? This may be more true than not and not retaing him must have a big reason.
My take on free agency is to fill certain positions with veteran talent while the youth develop. I wouldn’t even waste my time on anything less than 2 star talent and would target younger (26-29) players who can come in and start immediately helping to mentor the rookies and 1-2 year draftees. There are some pretty good 3 star talents in this FA that I think we might see on the roster this fall, but I don’t think they will go hog wild with getting them, maybe 4-5 only while the youth learn…

EXACTLY
Im not saying that we should buy a new team, but a couple 3 stars and we are in like flynn.
I would like to see Michael Bush in Orange and Blue, Tolbert is a beast as well. They both really excite me. If we don’t go after either I will be really disappointed. I haven’t been paying much attention this off season but aren’t both those guys free agents? Dump Moreno and upgrade.
I also like the idea of bringing in Randy Moss. He would be a HUGE target for Tebow, and instantly upgrade Tebow’s abilities on the long ball and anywhere else on the field Randy roamed. Moss can get those not so perfectly thrown passes and keep the defenders off of them. I know he is not a long term answer but could be Tebow’s best friend while he continues to develop as a passer.

Yes Sir,
One of those guys or RB in the first 2 rounds.
Bush or Tolbert would be good
I’d urge caution when considering Moss. He’s a player whose skills are reputedly diminishing and he has been criticized by at least one former coach:
Oakland OC Tom Walsh: “Randy Moss is a player whose skills are diminishing, and he’s in denial of those eroding skills…Randy was a great receiver, but he lacked the work ethic and the desire to cultivate any skills that would compensate for what he was losing physically later in his career.”
He has also been characterized by players and critics as a player who gives up on plays and on his team.

I’m all for spending money in FA as long as it is wisely spent. I don’t get the feeling that EFX are being cheap as much as they are frugal. If they see the impact player available I am sure they will make a play for him. I get the feeling Mario Williams is going to get a lot of attention and may be very difficult to pay without crashing our cap. Carr would be a good move, but how much is he really worth? Tolbert fits ideally with the system we run, but like Carr, how much is he really worth? Other than those three, who else do you think is worth paying franchise dollars at?

I’d like to see us spend big on two high end starters.
An MLB would be one, a WR, TE, OG, C or FS would be the other (based on what our scouts think of our own players) My guess is OG or C… maybe FS if Moore really does suck. Also spend a mid sized amount on another RB so we are not wasting carries on Lance Ball or relying on Moreno to make it past five games played.

You think Free Safety?
I thought Quinton Carter played pretty well there. I understand that he was drafted to ultimately be our Strong Safety but I think we need to be talking about who replaces Dawkins, not a position that we’re two-deep in.
If I were going after two free agents (by position), I’d go for a Defensive Tackle (as they generally take several years to develop and should be reaching their prime – someone like Jones from the Titans) and a Strong Safety (Someone like Branch from Oakland).
I’d be happy with a rookie Running Back, Cornerback and another Defensive Tackle and an End.

Brian stated last year that positions will dictate salary then abilities
IMO Bunkley will not get a BIG contract, maybe $20m 5 yrs. And also any DL probably the same. QB maybe a $5m/yr
Tracy Porter, CB, New Orleans Saints: He is a good, solid starting corner, and those guys get paid. The Saints probably won’t be able to keep him. He turns 26 in August.
Brodrick Bunkley, DT, Denver Broncos: He is coming off his best season, the timing of it coming perfectly in the final year of his deal. He turns 29 in November
Stephen Tulloch, MLB, Detroit Lions: On a one-year deal, he had 111 tackles and two picks for the Lions. He just turned 27, so age isn’t an issue. He’s a steady player.
Jason Jones, DT-DE, Tennessee Titans: He has flashed at times in his four seasons with the Titans, but he should be doing more. Has played both inside and outside for the Titans. He turns 26 in May, so he has time to become a really good player.
Dwight Lowery, DB, Jacksonville Jaguars: This former corner made a nice home at free safety for the Jaguars last season. He played above the level of expectations. The Jaguars want him back, but in a league where safety talent is at a minimum this former Jets player will get a nice deal. He just turned 26 in January.
Mike Tolbert: RB/FB SD 26 5’9" 243 Personally, i’d love this signing. He’s a tank and can play FB and RB. Would be a nice versatile weapon. Plus he’s a reliable catcher out of the backfield. He’s still young and doesnt have many miles on his legs
Sammie Lee Hill DT: Det 25 6’4’ 329 (2009-4) A solid run stuffer who got lost in the mix in Detroit. He’s young(25) and has size(6’4 330lbs) Would be a nice addition to our DL.
Dan Connor ILB: Car 26 6’2" 231 (2008-3) A favorite among many around here, and i’m one of them. Yes we have Nate Irving, but veteran depth is needed. Connor has been stuck behind John Beason, one of the best ILBer’s in the game. Would be an instant upgrade over mays.
William Middleton CB: Jac 25 5’11" 194 (2009-5) William Middleton doesn’t have much NFL experience, but he handled himself really well in relief of Derek Cox and Rashean Mathis in 2011. He’s a young corner with loads of potential.
Terrell Thomas CB: NYG 27 6’ 191 (2008-2) A solid starting corner in this league. Is coming off a Torn ACL, but it happened in August so he should be healthy by Training camp. Would come cheap after coming off injury.
Kreese and Lawrence will decide if Tim Tebow can develop into our future.

The unkowns are exciting and WHO will we get makes me anxious for the free agency and offseason to get going...
Bunkley: Is a must sign imo. Reportedly Jason Jones plays better inside even though he is light than he does outside. Weird as it sounds, he is just that fast and usually get’s by the Guard before he can get set. He struggled on the outside against Tackles for some reason. I think he would be a good sign. I hope we at least draft a pass rush DT in the draft, kind of a Crick ~ Watt type player. Drafting Jared Crick in the 2nd rd would be a steal imo.
Tolbert: Could be a nice pick up for us. I think Fox has designs for Mario Fannin this year and with his weight and speed, he could be a terror if he stays healthy. Definitely have to get somebody to backup McGahee…
Steven Tulloch: Would be an significant upgrade over Joe mays and would start while Irving develops. If we went after Tolluch I wouldn’t even fool with Conner.

I was thinking about Tulloch too, but the it's been reported that both sides are very interested in an extension.
Same for Jones. Maybe We can lure Jones away, but we don’t even come close to the Lions’ winning potential just yet, to be able to snatch Tulloch.

yep
sorry fellas… no way in Hades the Lions let one of the best 4-3 MIKE’s in the game slip away after a 1 year contract. I know Tulloch doesn’t really get the attention some would like, but who cares about attention. As far as game tape, it’s all there.
He’d make a nice addition. My only problem with all this is simple…. you look at a lot of the premier teams in football (Pittsburgh, Green Bay, NY Giants), they just don’t sign free agents that much.
Ideally, we need to home grow our own boys.

Free Agency is a tightrope
It must be carefully navigated. Turnover is a good thing and like all good things, it should be practiced in moderation. I am all for bringing in guys that can help the team, but there is a right way and a wrong way to do that. We are well versed in the wrong way because Shanahan did it the wrong way. He let great talents like Trevor Pryce and Mike Anderson walk in Free Agency because he was too busy trying to buy his way into a Championship.
Teams that are perenial powers maximize their home grown talent by holding on to it. They don’t do it by splurging in Free Agency and turning over the roster constantly. Look at where this tactic has put teams like the Eagles and Redskins? Then you have a team like New England that makes very little noise in FA, but they make the Playoffs year after year. Which way do you think works the best?
The only time a team is going to have studs at every position is in the Pro Bowl, or when you’re cheating at Madden. A true team is built with stars and roleplayers. Roleplayers out number the stars in this league by a considerable margin and they are just as important to a team’s sucess as the stars. If a team has enough good roleplayers and they actually play together, they can overcome a team chock full of talent.
Too many fans want instant gratification now days. Instant gratification and building a consistent winner do not mix well. I trust EFX to do the job better than anyone here on MHR (McGeorge is an execption). They have more information on whats going on than we fans can even fathom. They get paid to do this, where as it’s a hobby for most of us.

An infusion of talent is needed on defense and it was noticable against great teams like Green Bay, Detroit and New England.
A stud pass rushing DT, a stud MLB and a stud Safety might do the trick until the youth develop.

Agreed
I’m hoping we get a young stud DT in the draft to go with all the experience we have. A solid vet to mentor the Safeties. Still up in the air on the MLB. I am hoping Irving is our guy!

That's precious
I wonder if the Steelers thought the same thing when we were curb stomping them in the playoffs?

Tim Tebow is Denver's 2012 starting QB. I'm not even a little sorry that offends some of you.
