Kids In A Candy Store

More and more I see mocks and FA signings that are over the top. People there is a limit on how much turnover we will actually have this year. It's not like everybody on the roster needs to go. We do have a few good players.

Many times when I do a mock I refer to the Broncos as my team. I put my feelings down of how to improve my team. I'm not actually naive enough to think what I say matters one iota to the actual people that get to make the real decisions. I just think it's fun to guess on what to change for next year. I like it when we try talk out certain choices the front office has to make. I like to learn from you guys in the comments about what you think. I really like it when we turn out to be right on something. That said, here is another one to cypher through.

Jump.

Star-divide

Our FAs.

Priorities are Prater and Bunkley. Colquitt, Thomas and Fells(yeah I said Fells) are also high on the list. Quinn, Royal, Woodyard and Larsen are vital, but if they leave we will deal with it and get a FA to replace them. I will remain optimistic and say they all re-signed.

If Prater doesn't re-sign we should franchise him. Colquitt can be tendered if need be, because he is a restricted free agent. Other RFAs are Ball, Clark, McBean and Willis. They all will be kept around very cheaply. Rafael Bush, Jeremiah Johnson and Mitch Unrein are exclusive rights FAs, so they will stay also.

Bunkley will be able to demand at least 5 mil/yr at 3 years. This is not a bad price. He's young and proved himself this year. Pay the man.

Thomas, IMO, plays the same position as Bunkley. He is however better than most of our other FAs and we should try to keep him around. Last year he signed a one year deal for 1 mil. We probably won't offer much more than that again this year. With Doom, Bunkley, Vickerson and Warren on board I just don't see much room for him. To bad 'cause I think he's the one who should stay instead of Bunkley.

Fells did a good job last year and shouldn't demand to much money. We have to keep him around or sign someone else. I say keep him.

Resign all the rest of them under 30 years old that will come back at a fair price. No guarantees or signing bonuses, they can come into camp and try out. We can always cut them later. If they are over 30 (Hochstein, Haggan, Dawkins), let them go. If they aren't willing to "try out" let them leave.

Other FAs-I really feel we will concentrate mostly on our own FAs and the draft.

-I want a FA big bruising back. Fanin could produce into this guy, but not for now. People have mentioned either Michael Bush or Mike Tolbert here. I like that. Or maybe Le'Ron McClain. I personally like Owen Schmitt. I liked him in the '08 draft when we took Hillis later than him and I still like him now. This makes it so keeping Larsen is not an issue, however, it does not solve our RB problem.

-Next I really want a FA CB that can compete with Andre Goodman. He is getting to old. I'm alright with whoever EFX choses here. Some of the teams are in a bind as far as cap room and there could be someone good available. Jason Allen of Houston will be available I think. He is 6'1" 204 age 28

A FA to replace Dawkins is needed. Sean Jones 6'1" 220 age 29 replaced him before in Phil. he can do it again.

MLB is a problem everyone is up in arms about. We did draft a couple of capable ones last year though. I say roll the dice with them. If we have to, we can always move DJ to MLB.

Recap; Owen Schmitt, Jason Allen and Sean Jones.

A fresh new look mock draft

#25 Lamar Miller RB He will be our #1 from day 1, with McGahee as a backup. This kid reminds me of TD.

#57 Ben Jones OC - Let the hate start to flow. 2nd round and still no defense. I'm really not sure what we do with Walton in this situation, but I like this kid a lot. Walton could be backup. Maybe he can be a rotational guy to replace Hochstein. Or maybe we can trade Walton during training camp if Ben is beating him out.

I dont know what you were thinking. None of those guys are coming to Denver. Lamar Miller is going to be drafted earlier and none of your other picks even make sense. Why draft a DE in the 2nd round who isnt even as good as Robert Ayers. Sorry but I don’t like this Mock Draft

No problem.

For the record though I do think there is a really good chance Miller will make it to #25. Also, Johnson is 3rd round not 2nd as you said and I didn’t plan on him replacing Ayers.

Good stuff

Would love to see Sean jones in orange and blue, solid player, here comes the hate though, I agree that we need to grab a OLman but not in the second, I say grab a safety, DT, or even a WR there

DT-We kept Bunkley and possibly Thomas if he stays cheap enough. We have Vickerson and Warren. Then McBean and Unrein are around too. I’m alright with that. I drafted Chapman.

WRs-Thomas, Decker, Royal, Willis we all know about. Check out Goodwin, Dell, Grisham, Orton and Toone and then come back and say we need to draft more WRs. I highly doubt we will.

Ah you finally came around on a RB in the first!

Sweet, Miller should be there, no other backs deserve 1st round selections. Miller is a early 2nd rounder in my eyes, i would trade back if i could and select him, but i wouldnt mind selecting him at 25.

Im coming around on David Wilson too, he just fumbles alot which worries me, also we can always go Doug Martin in the 2nd too.

Hm i like the center pick, but i would rather sign a veteran then draft a guy. Get a DT like Reyes or a CB/WR in the 2nd.

Love the Johnson pick, but he will be long gone by then, take him in the 2nd and i will be happy.

Idk much about judie and jackson. Chapman i like, but he may need to start the year on the PUP i believe

Not a bad draft!

in FA i would sign Tolbert, get a Veteran WR(or take one in the 2nd or 3rd round of the draft) sign a veteran LB and Safety, and spend some top money on a CB or DT

by Scotty Payne on Feb 15, 2012 3:14 PM MST reply actions

I really like the trio of Tolbert, Miller, and McGahee

Tolbert can play FB and RB…Miller and McGahee would be a nasty 1-2 punch. A great running game is a QB’s best friend, especially with a QB like Tebow who’s also a threat to run. Miller’s burst and explosion would be a deadly weapon in the zone read i believe.

I wish I was as confident as you...

…about Miller being there at #25.

I’ve made it clear that I think Richardson and Miller are the Top 2 backs in this draft. I think there are at least two teams drafting ahead of us who could select a running back: Tampa and Cincinnati. And I think you could make an argument that Cleveland, Miami, the Jets, Kansas City and Detroit could select a running back.

As much as I covet Miller, I’ve pretty much given up the idea of seeing him in a Bronco uniform. Sad face.

There's no way Khloe's a Kardashian. No frickin' way.

by Agent Jerry Fletcher on Feb 15, 2012 6:39 PM MST up reply actions

Ahhh.

I’ll cry for you. RB is not as high of a priority in today’s NFL. Richardson is quite a bit above the rest. He will go top 10. After that some have Wilson above Miller. At any rate I think Miller goes from 20-25.

"I am not better than anyone else just because I play football."
Tim Tebow

by Digger24 on Feb 15, 2012 6:51 PM MST up reply actions

There's inefficiency in the RBs.

I agree that the consensus says Richardson is above the rest. I disagree. I think Richardson and Miller are at parity. Different backs but similar potential. And I think it’s HOF potential.

Miller’s not getting enough love on other sites. He’s getting the love here; but not elsewhere.

In fact, if you look at who operated in space more, it was Richardson. Backs who are used to operating in open spaces in college often flunk out in the NFL (see Knowshon). I’m not saying Richardson will wash out. But I think Miller made more of his own yards than Richardson did.

As for some scouts claiming that Wilson’s above Miller, that’s…well, wrong doesn’t begin to touch it. Wilson will be a good running back in the NFL. But he’s not in Lamar Miller’s class.

There's no way Khloe's a Kardashian. No frickin' way.

I actually think you are way too high on miller

All he does is break outside and use his speed to gain yards. This won’t work against NFL talent. David Wilson is a better prospect IMO. He is just as fast but has better success/vision between the tackles. I also like Doug Martin a lot. Good size and speed. Strong and shifty. I would be happier with either of these guys.

Malik Jackson

That’s the first time I’ve seen his name in a Bronco mock.

I kind of like this kid. Trouble is, is he Ayers 2.0?

There’s some differences I think. For starters, wasn’t Ayers a one-year wonder (or maybe it was even a second half of his senior season wonder)? Jackson has produced the past two years. I love Jackson’s size – I think he could play the closed end and stand up against the run. I’ve heard he’s a high-motor guy and a leader on and off the field.

The trouble is, I think Ayers was a better pass rusher in college. And we know where that got us.

Here’s my prediction: Jackson’s going to fly up draft boards. I don’t think he’ll be available in the 5th. Then he’ll have a career similar to Ayers.

I’m hoping for more. I think his size is similar to Coples. And his history – what with the transfer and all – could represent a scouting inefficiency. Despite the transfer, I think he was two-time All-SEC. And that’s saying something. I don’t think Ayers ever had that honor. And I’m not sure what he did in the Senior Bowl.

Anyway, he’s a name to watch.

There's no way Khloe's a Kardashian. No frickin' way.

You’ll take 5 defenders if we bite on OC for 2nd….yawwwwwn…..cant we get a moose in like the 5th? You should frame this as a trade! It will be interesting to see how EFX evaluates that by their FA moves…I just wanna see them lock down the defense this year tight…work on O next year ….

I like Miller, but not the center. Good stuff all around

Our team would be better improved by landing a blue-collar starting DT/CB that’s good out of the gate – but one that will never will be elite – than it would be to land the next Jeff Saturday.

Centers are only taken about once per year in the first-round, so it seems epically high for the best running team in the league to draft one in the 2nd round.

As for the DEs, I would like to see one added, but not two. With Ayers, Doom and Miller as a split-timer, we’ve already got three good-to-great DEs. Add one to develop or even to add pass rush and rotation immediately and I’m down. But two more is just a crowd considering we’re not looking to draft backups but guys who at least have the room to add impact if they’re good enough.

I think we need to focus on DT early. Grab an all around great guy early, one that can stuff the run and penetrate the pocket. Then grab a straight up penetrator later. Pencil in Ty Warren and Broderick Bunkley as your starters for this year, with the two rookies backing them up and developing along with little Vick – with the hope being that Warren is allowed to walk the following year with one of the rookies stepping into the starting role.

Again, we need to focus on creating pressure from the inside in this year’s draft. Warren should be looked at as a one-year stop gap at this point. And Bunkley should be looked at as a permanent run-stuffing starter.

I'm officially an idiot. We didn't need Quinn to win dumbass. (Slap to the face!) Great job Tebow and Team! After years of mediocrity we fans deserve a pat on the back for staying true, too. So I hereby take credit for this win for being such a great fan... even having doubted Him once ;D

Oh yeah!

Hey Rodney. Thanks for coming.
1st part, I know we don’t need a Center I just wanted to get his name out there. He’s a pretty good one. Better than Walton, but we are what we are at Center for now.
2nd part, I did draft them as backups. Hunter and Harvey could leave.
3rd part, yes Bunkley at NT with Thomas as backup. Warren at UT with Vickerson as backup. You’re right though a young UT waiting in the wings is a must. Put your choise in at #57 please.

by Digger24 on Feb 15, 2012 5:53 PM MST up reply actions

2nd part, I like the idea of using mid-round picks as developmental starters rather than developmental backups. The difference I’m trying to underline is that there is no way for two DEs to ever make impact on this team unless for injury. So spending those two picks on that position limits the upside. In other words, in the 3rd and 5th rounds you’re not expecting to draft Von Miller and Elvis Dumervil. But if you do get so lucky, they can’t make that kind of impact anyway…. because the real VonDoom are already the locked-in-forever-and-always starters.

In other words, if you need a DE for depth and a CB for depth, you sign the DE in FA becuase he has limited upside and no room to grow into a starting role. You draft the CB in the middle rounds so that he can develop while having upside and potential and room to grow into a starter.

3rd part, I’m not sure I have an easy answer. I’m not a really big fan of Reyes as our penetrator of the future. If I’m allowed, I think I’d maybe package pick # 57 with 5a and a late 2012 pick to move up into the early 2nd round and take Brandon Thompson :)

I like Jones at safety

I’d like to see a splash at RB in Michael Bush. Everyone expects OakTown to franchise him, but I see that as unlikely considering their cap position. Plus, even with DMF seemingly perpetually being injured, is it really a good idea to put the tag on your 2nd best running back? Not so, says me. Marshawn Lynch would be my 2nd choice. I agree with your take at MLB. There was no offseason and MIKEs outside the 1st round pretty much never start in their first year anyway. We know nothing more about Nate Irving than we did last year. His not playing is not a knock or a negative in any way, IMO. We were already starting a rookie SAM, I’m not convinced Nate ever had a chance to start last year. If it were me, I’d have drawn a line in the sand and said I’m not going to start two rookie LBs. I’m just not. And certainly not when one of them is supposed to quarterback the defense. Worst case scenario, we move DJ to MLB and have Woody start at WILL for the year. So while I could see a veteran come in to compete, I couldn’t see a high draft choice or a high expenditure there.

Our defensive end position on the left side may be complete?

A less known, forgotten talented DE Jeremy Jarmon was reportedly the toughest cut made on final cut day and the experiment to play him at defensive tackle failed as he didn’t play well on the inside. Just like he didn’t fit in Shanahan’s 3/4 defense at DE. People made such a commotion about trading the veteran wide receiver for this relatively unkown. EFX must of evaluated him and saw him an untapped talent. Whay the tried to make something out of him that he isn’t is beyond me, because is a true 4/3 DE. Our other LDE Robert Ayers is very comfortable inside and plays there a lot with success, thus making the 24 year old Jarmon’s talent valuable as EFX saw it in the trade. Ayers can slide over to undertackle with Jarmon on the edge with Miller on the outside. A three headed draggon breathing fire down the quarterbacks neck. Just a thought to get you thinking…

A bit corner heavy huh? And I certainly think we’ll sign more than 3 FAs. I LOVE the Sean Jones pick. If you don’t mind, I might copy that signing from you lol! And for Akiem Hicks, I wanted to see what he was all about but CBS doesn’t provide a scouting report. Is he a pass rushing force? Or a josh chapman type DT?

Tyrone Crawford

with the lack of true 4-3 DE in this draft i think this guy with a good combine will go up a lot of boards. Definitely one to keep your eyes open for.

You think Marcus Thomas should stay over Bunkley?

No way bro…. no way!!! Marcus Thomas should be Bunkley’s backup, and I hope he is resigned to be just that. Marcus Thomas is good against the run, but not great at it like Bunk. Neither one can get into the backfield or chase a QB consistently. Don’t forget about Ty Warren either… he’s had more than enough time to lick his wounds.

This is my ideal DT core for next year (I’m thinking we’ll keep 5):

NT: Brodrick Bunkley ~ Marcus Thomas ~ (free agent)
UT: Jared Crick / Devon Still / Michael Brockers / Jerel Worthy ~ Ty Warren

Vickerson????

Yeah I do as far as bang for the buck in FA, but now we are in full spend mode so WTF we’ll have a 25 mil dollar DL.

Lamar Miller would be a good addition

but he’s no TD. He’s more of a young McGahee actually…. nice blend of size/strength/speed. TD wasn’t that fast…. that strong… he was just a worker bee in a bad ass zone block system that made everyone look better than they actually were. TD was a bad man…. I’m not saying he wasn’t… but even he would tell you he wasn’t a supreme athlete. TD was good at everything, but not great at anything…. unless we’re talking about his patience and one cut ability… he was GREAT at that.

Owen Schmitt has never caught a fair break in the NFL. He might be my favorite Mountaineer ever. He would be perfect here. A lot of people don’t know this about Schmitt…. he is more of a weapon than a lead blocker. That’s not to say he can’t lead block. He can… he has… but Schmitt should be given carries and passes thrown his way. Heck… he was even our rugby punter in college.

I did know he was a good reciever and blocker.

The rugby stuff, no.

I know Miller is not a TD clone. I was going to say I didn’t say that, then I looked up and there it was in my post. What I meant to say is after watching the video Scotty posted the other day he reminded me of TD. Which he did, but only cause of the break aways he had just like TD could do. Deceptive speed.

I think miller is more athletic then TD was

When he gets in the league well see what his work ethic then, but he does remind me of TD as well, his vision is great, when o watch the tape of both those plays where it looks like its over and then bang, they shoot through a hole and go on a Gallup, TD was such a great player and teammate I love watchIng the superbowl special, when he says that he couldn’t see cuz his migraine was so bad and shanny says we need ya in there your just a decoy, guy would do anything to help the team

no prob on typos.

That was all time greatest moment of any of my favorite players ever. Love that story. It goes way beyond going in the game when he was hurting so bad, the unselfishness, the teamwork of it.

You said so well what I was referring to….

“their” vision is great, when you watch the tape of both those players where it looks like its over and then bang, they shoot through a hole and go on a gallop.
