Broncos positions of need – off season 2012

Hi to everybody, this is my first post on MileHighReport.

Not being English mother language, I guess there will be some grammar mistake around the post…sorry for that!!!

Here is my analysis of Broncos talent and roster situation for the three most glaring positions of need towards 2012 Free Agency and Draft:

Star-divide

1. Defensive Tackle

Brodrick Bunkley and Marcus Thomas are unrestricted free agents.

The roster includes Ryan McBean, Ty Warren, Kevin Vickerson, Mitch Unrein and practic squad Sealver Siliga.

I think the Broncos are wishing to bring back one between Bunkley and Thomas. I think that they’re prepared to pay Bunkley; what makes his re-sign little bit less obvious could be the additional payment that the re-signing him after a playoff appearance it would means for 2012 draft. In fact the trade with the eagles involved a Broncos 2012 draft pick. It remain to be seen if the draft pick depends on number of snap played by Bunkley, playoff participation and/or re-signing of the player. If re-signing him will increase significantly the values of the draft pick to give to the eagles, it’s also possible that the Broncos would give up on him and will re-sign Marcus Thomas, although he played good but not great this year. In my opinion Bunkley played really well against the run, played tough during the whole year and also has a sack finally during the playoff game against Pittsburg. A run stuffer like him is absolutely necessary since Oakland and Kansas City have primarily running offense (and great ones) and San Diego has a really good backfield that worked really well when Rivers didn’t screw it with terrible mistakes.

Like every other Broncos fan, I also would like the FO to find a pass rushing DT, that could start with Bunkley at any snap and give the Broncos a loaded pass rushing corps, but I’m not a general manager, neither a coach that could evaluate what a player could bring to the table and which areas of his playing could be developed.

I won’t be shocked if next year starters will be again Bunkley and Thomas, hoping that, in these case, Denver won’t overpay for Thomas.

It would be interesting also to know what Denver think they could get out of Ty Warren. Are now 2 years in a row that the former Patriot didn’t played a snap. He could be cut or also he could be a great rotational addition in the center of the defensive line. After 2 years on I/R, I don’t think he could have the athletic ability to start, but if the coaches see in him some pass rushing ability, he could be plugged in sometimes to create havoc in the opposite backfield.

Ryan McBean was the surprise of McDaniels first year (or probably Nolan year at defensive coordinator). Then in 2010 he lost his starting job to Vickerson and this past year he get back playing a rotational defensive tackle position and getting 4 sacks during the season (the only 4 sacks cumulated by the whole defensive tackle group). He is a restricted free agent, I see him in Denver training camp fighting for a role in the roster.

McBean will probably fight with Vickerson, that had a good year in 2010 then played at the beginning of the season before an injury put him on I/R for the rest of the year. I don’t recall any play from him anyhow, so he will be back in training camp competing for a role on the team with McBean.

Unrein will likely compete too, but if the team bring in a new defensive tackle (or re-sign both Thomas and Bunkley) he is the early candidate to not make it. Anyhow he made it this year, when no fan expected it, so I won’t be surprise if he could repeat. If that will happen I would then expect him having a bigger role in the defense and play a significant bigger amount of snaps.

Siliga spent more than half of the season on Denver practice squad. He will be at the training camp to compete.

2. Cornerback

Cornerback is another interesting position on the Broncos roster.

Starters Champ Bailey and Andre Goodman will be 34 next season. Bailey is still the best player on the Broncos defense (although fortunately it looks that now is a close fight with Dumervil and Miller); Goodman is the scapegoat for the most of the fans.

A part them, Chris Harris played really well last year for an undrafted free agent as nickel cornerback. It still remain to be seen if he will repeat this year (I really do hope) and could even get better (would be a gift for the Broncos).

Syd’quan Thompson was on I/R the whole year, I hope he could recover in time for the training camp after the Achilles tendon rupture the past pre-season. It would be great addition if he could make the team next summer coming back such a devastating injury.

The Broncos brought in Jonathan Wilhite the week before the season started to compete for the nickel back duties. He lost out to Chris Harris and will be a free agent this March. I don’t think the Broncos will bring him back.

Tony Carter is a late season addition as insurance against CB injuries. He will compete in training camp.

Cassius Vaughn started 2 games when Bailey was injured, he wasn’t a disaster but after that he too lost out to Chris Harris for the nickel back role. He also has value as kick returner. I think He will be on the team again on opening day; his special team ability will keep him in, a further development as a cornerback could be good for the broncos to build the desired depth, but keeping him as 4th cornerback could be good, given the experience he gained this year before he went down injured.

Resuming, my prediction for the CB position it includes one addition through draft or free agency, although I think that there won’t be many free agent that will accept Denver low money offer that are actually better than Goodman. Drafting a good development cornerback in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th round could be the best solution, using Goodman for one more year and letting compete the newest draft addition, Harris and Vaughn for being his successor. I would still love Squid to stick around.

3. Inside Linebacker

This is the most interesting situation on the Denver roster, IMO.

Joe Mays, this year starter is an unrestricted free agent. Mario Haggan, his first replacement on the Broncos depth chart, also. Neither of them would probably back with the Broncos next year if coaches believe and develop Nate Irving, last year 3rd round pick. Mike Mohammed, last year 6th round pick, could be in the mix too for a spot in the roster as inside linebacker.

Joe Mays plays his heart out and he is good against the run, at times fantastic, but is only a two downs linebacker. The Broncos glaringly need a stout and sound team leader at inside linebacker since they parted ways with Al Wilson. Mario Haggan is a great team player but is not the answer at this position.

Could Nate Irving be “the guy” for the Broncos? I think Broncos fan would have a better perspective of the coaches opinion at the inside linebacker position when the free agent period will start.

Panther’s free agent Dan Connors will be on the market and on his way for starting duties in Denver. Also Denver could re-sign Mays.

If Connors will be signed, Mays won’t be back and Irving will be developed for depth.

If Mays re-signs Connor won’t be brought in and Irving will get his shot at starting duties in training camp, having Mays on the roster as insurance. This could be my preferred solution because it could allow Inving to develop in a leader and be the starter someday.

Between the other free agents, few are better than Mays and will demand a lot more money than him, I don’t see the Broncos to sign Tullock, for example, also because if Detroit let him go it would mean that he would sign for playing in the third team in three years, not a great indicator for leadership.

Denver, with the 25th pick in the first round could easily draft a new inside linebacker. Again the position requires intangibles, physical skills and football knowledge that all together are rare to find from day one in a young player. When they are there, the guy is being draft in the top 10. At 25, do the Broncos really would find a first day starter that is better already than Mays and Irving? Let’s hope the scouting department has done his homework.

My prediction is that Denver will sign Dan Connor for a two/three years contract and let him be the starter the first year and then battling with Irving during 2013 summer training camp.

great first post brother!

I agree with you that those positions are dire needs for our Broncos. I would also add RB and Safety to the list. I would almost go so far to say that Safety is more of a priority than CB, however, we do have some young Safeties on the roster that may or may not become something.

I really feel that bad Safety play had a lot to do with that losing tailspin we endured at the end of the regular season. But unlike CB, we do have some young, inexperienced options there.

Good points on RB and S

I agree that both positions have to be addressed. Anyhow I think that Carter’ plays in the playoff have shown that he is a keeper, he got his first two interceptions in the two biggest games of the season, so to me he deserve to be considered a starter going to training camp. For the other safety starting position I personally have hopes that Moore could get bigger and stronger this offseason and between him and Bruton one could develop in a reliable starter next year or in 2013. So my take it would be that if Dawkins leaves the team, Denver should sign an experienced veteran that could stick around a couple of years and mentor ours young players. Given that I like Iloka, because of his phisical skills, I don’t see how Denver can draft safeties every year, better bring in some veterans that could help developing the youngsters we alredy have in the roster.

I About RB, I would like Denver to draft somebody, but not in the 1st round. I do feel that 1st round RB and CB have the highest bust potential than any other position, because of the expectations that usually rise around a 1st round pick. I do think that good prospect could be found both in the 2nd and 3rd round this year. But definetely Denver needs to bring in a new RB that could challenge McGahee and share carries with him.

Nice post

Some good thoughts here and your English is better than some people who are meant to speak it as their first language.

I agree I think the MLB is a really interesting situation. There is no doubt that fans and many on here see it as a real problem position and are justified to see it that way. However, we dont know what the FO think of that position and if they do want to address it whether they will be able to. We could be sitting here next season with Mays and Irving as the two MLBs on the team.

Thanks man!!!

I agree completely. I have high hopes on Irving, so sticking around with him and Mays would be good to me, given that Denver won’t overpay Mays. I think that for the starter MLB it will go down on how Del Rio feels about the personnel in place.

Thanks a lot!!

You did really well.

You said there would be a draft though. I assumed you meant mock draft. I guess I misunderstood that part.

Thanks a lot....but I'm very bad on mockery....

I won’t make any mock, after 4 years trying I do think I never get any Broncos pick…any!!!
Even more I hope Denver will stick with the “best player available” startegy….so depending on their board they could select any player on any position…..

Pretty much agree all the way til the end when you said drafting a MLB with our 25th pick can be easy...

2012’s draft class of ILBers is lousy for the first couple of rounds. EFX may draft a depth guy like Wagner or Franklin later though. I agree the free agency will tell us a lot moving towards the draft, and I definitely believe we will draft a cornerback or two.

I like Wagner too

…and a lot. I just feel that he will go high in the 2nd round.
Here there is a list of LB prospect that IMO could interest the Broncos in the later rounds:

BOBBY WAGNER (Utah State) – 2nd, he’s a n all around lb
JAMES-MICHAEL JOHNSON (Nevada)- 4th or lower, he didn’t have a great Senior Bowl
AUDIE COLE (NC State) – 3rd, I feel he’ll get momentum getting closer to Draft day
SHAWN LOISEAU (Merriman) – 7th/CFA, did goon in the Shrine game and could be a great development finding
LAVONTE DAVID (Nebraska) – 3rd, Broncos coaches inteviewed him at the senior bowl, he physically fits the kind of linebackers mold both Fox and Del Rio historically liked.

Someone is going to fall in love with David and pick him early 2nd, it wouldnt surprise me if someone considers him in the 1st round.

You make some pretty good points with the scenarios existing with these positions. I agree that the issue at MLB is the most interesting, because Irving is right now a “wild card”. I personally have high hopes for him and have a feeling he is going to make a lot of us here (myself included) eat some crow. I disagree that Tulloch wouldn’t be a good fit here. Just because of him going from team to team 3 years in a row does not mean he lacks leadership needed for the position. Talent wise he is where we should all hope Irving or any LB on our team is at.

As far as drafting goes, I don’t think #25 is going to give us a chance at taking a day 1 starter at MLB, but DT and CB may be a different story. Jenkins, Dennard, Minnifield, and a few others should be available at CB. Some of those guys will be considered a reach, but all have the capability of being a good #2 CB. I don’t know which DT is going to be there, but between Still, Brockers, Cox, Thompson, and Worthy, we will be likely in a position to take whoever of that group falls to #25. Personally, I would prefer Cox out of that group. Good post!

I'm routing for Irving too...

…and it’s incredible because on draft day last year, when Denver selected him instead of my favorite Jurrell Casey (of course a DT) I was alone in my home in Madrid barking to the laptop as a mad dog……and now he’s the one I’d like to be the next thing closest to Al Wilson…..

I like Tulloch a lot too, he’s really under valuated IMO, but I would like our Mike to be drafted by us, a true Bronco inside…maybe because we finally have to find a true leader of the defense (since also Chap won’t play forever) and I think MLB leadership is a really huge think in defense chemistry…

Good thinking in a lot of this

Agree with others that 1st round should have some value for either CB or DT, and both are areas of suignificant need. I’m guessing we go there.

Don’t really like any of the MLB prospects… Irving/Mays may be the way we go, but I also like the idea of taking a flyer on Tatupu as competition if he’s healthy. He fits the mold of what Fox/DR like in a MLB, may be a value signing due to injury risk, and when healthy, has shown to be able to play at a probowl level (we’ll see how much the injuries slowed him down).

Signing Tulloch or Connor likely means we have no faith in Irving’s ability to develop… and while they may be good stop gaps, they also are mediocre enough that we have to have tough questions about how much to invest in replacing them in the future…. they become akward where they are good enough that the position is no longer a big need, but poor enough tht they may hold back the rest of the team long-term if we can get a playmaker or 2 at DT/DB. Basically, I don’t like their salary value given our team needs at other positions, etc…. they strike me as better fits for a team that either has a ton of holes (in which case, simply filling some in is important), or one that already has a bunch of elite players who just need complimentary/competant guys around them…. I don’t think our DEF fits either of those cases.

@sergiosax..good points and perspectives.

I do not believe that drafting a player at a position demeens the developing player at that position. A CB would be great at 1-2 but I still really like Harris’ change to develop. A FA lb does not affect Irvings path IMO. A qb at 1-2 should only push Tebow not hurt his feelings.
One major point to EFX, BPA either in FA or the draft. Best lb is probably Dan Connor and if he meets the Bronco ‘type’ then so be it.
IMO the #25 might be best as a trade down because you usually do not find an impact starter. Would love to stock-pile another #2 and #3.

Kreese and Lawrence will decide if Tim Tebow can develop into our future.
