Broncos Roster needs – offseason 2012
After proposing my opinion about the three most glaring positions of need, I would like now to make my analysis about other positions of need that in my opinion will have to be fixed by the Broncos during the 2012 offseason.
Denver has to get better at:
- Tight End
- Safeties
- Running Back
Tight End
Daniel Fells and Dante Rosario, the two “catching” tight ends, will be free agents next March.
Virgil Green was used in blocking situations; meanwhile Julius Thomas was barely on the field this past year.
Daniel Fells is an interesting player and I do think that is worth to be re-signed to a 2 years contract. He made some good catches and showed that he could move the chains; anyhow he is no nightmare to any defensive coordinator. I think he could be a short-gap solution for the next year or two still.
Dante Rosario in some sites is listed as a free agent in others not, he was brought in, cut and then brought in again. I don’t have anything against him, but I would let him go in free agency because I would bet on developing Virgil Green and Julius Thomas.
Although Thomas probably would require one more year of learning football, Virgil Green could inherit to role of Dante Rosario on the team next year and see more action as catching tight end. He will learn experience together with proportioning great values with his ability as HB, blocking tight end and special teamer. He is one of my sleepers on the Broncos roster.
Julius Thomas was drafted in the back of the 4th round in the 2011 draft and showed little or nothing during 2011 regular season. Still I believe that the coaches that drafted him are still working on his development because he could be the kind of nightmare tight end that the Broncos need. Also it has to be remembered that Coach Fox never relied on pass catching tight end in Carolina and this could also be a reason why Broncos fans didn’t had the opportunity to see much of Thomas this year. Next year he should be better and could even start to produce strongly by the second part of the year just like Demaryious Thomas did in 2011.
I really do believe that Denver has to believe in these two guys that have drafted last year because developing young player is the better way to create a Great Organization, trusting past decision and investing in them are two important aspects of FO that will turn a good football team in a dynasty that could compete every year for getting to the SB.
Cornelius Ingram was added to the practice squad later during the past year and he signed a future contract with the Broncos. He will compete in training camp.
I think that the Denver Broncos has to get better at tight end position, but my recipe for this position is to develop the in-house talent. I would be really pleased if the Broncos re-sign Fells as insurance for a couple of years, give more playing time to Green and follow developing Julius Thomas maybe increasing, in the second half of the year, his playing time. I won’t carry more than 3 tight ends on the active roster next year, I would add a rookie to the practice squad, a CFA for example, but I won’t draft any tight end this year basically for 3 reasons:
- I don’t see any superstar TE in this year draft
- Denver invested two draft picks last year on the position
- Fox is not involving that much tight ends in his passing game
Safeties
The safety position has to be evaluated carefully by Broncos FO.
Brian Dawkins is a free agent and is likely to retire or to leave BroncoLand (he didn’t play in Playoffs but did in the Pro-Bowl?....something smells bad here…).
David Bruton is a special team ace and starts to show signs of developing as a defender.
Denver drafted Rahim Moore in the 2nd round last draft but he is to light and missed tons of tackles when he had to play in 2011.
Quinton Carter started the season as Dawkins or Moore replacement, eventually replaced Moore, played as a rookie in pair with Dawkins, was completely lost while playing together with Moore but finally played quite good while paired with Bruton, getting one interception in each playoff game. His performance in playoff games doesn’t have to be underestimate, when it counted most he created turnovers and what is pretty amazing is that he got them against Roethlisberger and Brady…..not too bad for a 4th round pick. I’m convinced that he will carry his momentum through training camp and he’ll be one of the starters next year, possibly at strong safety.
Rafael Bush was a second week addition that played sparingly towards the end of the season when Dawkins was injured. I don’t know that much about him apart that before being claimed by the Broncos he was on the Falcons practice squad. He will compete next training camp for a role in the team. Bubble player.
David Bruton really didn’t played bad football when he stepped up for an injured Brian Dawkins at the end of the season. I do hope he could develop some more and competing for the starting job in training camp.
Bruton will have to fight with Moore. Rahim Moore is the player on the Broncos roster that I hope could really rebound from an underperforming year. He was thought to be the safety starter that Denver needed to pair up with Dawkins, but he is too light and displayed not enough tackling abilities at pro-level. His future depends on how bigger he could get and how much he learned from the sideline this year. As I said, I really would like him to step up and shows progress next season.
A part the players on the roster, Denver will probably have to bring in some experienced safeties through free-agency, if Brian Dawkins retire. IMO Denver would really need Dawkins to stick with the team even as assistant coach. He would help developing players such Moore, Carter and Bruton. If the Broncos could not retain his leadership, the team will be really weakened and an experienced safety has to be brought to training camp, competing with the youngster for the second starting position.
I don’t think the broncos will spend another draft pick on a safety because I don’t see a sure fire prospect (even Barron that just had double hernia surgery) and George Iloka (Boise State) will be over drafted probably (barring a pitiful performance at the combine) because of his size.
Running Back
Running back is a position where I really do feel the Broncos should do something in the draft.
McGahee was fantastic last year but he missed an explosive complementary runner that could alternate him. Willis will be 31 years old, he could have a couple of year more at high level but he just can’t take that many hits as he did last year. He carried the boat and has been bang up a lot at the end of Broncos run. From a fan standpoint I really like him and respect him as a player and competitor. He came to Denver via free agency last year, beat everyone out and carried the load the whole year in a running offense that rarely found help in the passing game. The few times he missed snaps because of injuries Denver offense was basically awful (with the exception of the win in KC).
Lance Ball did good things at times (30 runs in KC), but he was given enough carries to have a full evaluation of his abilities and didn’t spark. He is a great team player, he could carry the ball in case of need but I don’t see him as McGahee counterpart, sharing starting duties. He is a good insurance player that you like to back up starters in case of injury.
Jeremiah Johnson didn’t have enough snaps for letting fans know what Denver has in him. Sure coaches see him in practice and know what he can do and how much he could develop. He will compete in training camp.
Knowshon Moreno is a fraud. He is injury prone (he went down to injury every year) plus I don’t think he fits the kind of play Coach Fox wants to play. He still is a great 3rd down back. He could catch the ball really well and has a great running progression that used well could be a dangerous weapon for the Broncos. He is not a leading back and does not have the mentality to be. I would still keep him (DUI or not) and use his receiving skills together with some runs to confuse the opposing defense. Anyhow he should have not been picked in the 1st round….not even close to the 1st round. For this reason he is a fraud.
Xavier Omon was signed to the practice squad at the end of the year and will compete in training camp.
Mario Fannin went down with an injury at the beginning of the past training camp. He signed a future contract and I’m actually really interested to see what he could bring to the table. Denver signed him as CFA, so I don’t think that he could be the next Peterson, but he could actually create some havoc in Denver depth chart.
Denver could think to select a running back in the Draft. Coach Fox selected two running backs in the 1st round while he was head coach of the Carolina Panthers. I don’t see any running back in the 2012 draft worth to be chosen between the 20th and 32nd picks and I hope the Broncos won’t blow up the entire draft for trade up and grab Richardson (Alabama). But in the 2nd or 3rd round Denver could find some nice player that could be paired with McGahee and share starting duties. My favorite could be Doug Martin in the 2nd round, if he won’t blow out minds at the combine and be selected at the end of the 1st round. If not him I really do think that in the 3rd and 4th round of this draft there is enough talent for Denver selecting somebody that could be a solid help next year.

Nice post
You are correct… historically, Fox has not used receiving TE’s much. However, I doubt they would have drafted Julius Thomas just to be a blocker. They have big plans for him… now… he just has to make them a reality.
"If you went to the Fair with this guy and you played that game where you have to throw the ball through the hole..... he may never get it through the hole, but he's still gonna be walking away with all the stuffed animals!" Prime's commentary on our very own Tim Tebow!!!
"As iron sharpens iron, so will one man sharpen another." The Bible, by way of Tim Tebow.
"If I had to choose between an abundance of football intelligence, or football wisdom, I'd choose wisdom every single time...... John Fox has enough football wisdom to be carried in a dump truck." Me!
"Moreno is a fraud"
But what do you really think? ;-) I agree with your approach: FA for TE and S support; Draft a RB…I think they should go to TE more a Tebow and TEs gain experience…Last year, Tebow couldnt make most throws to TE reliably…so we didnt see them much…
I don't see Moreno as a fraud in a sense, I see him as an athlete trying to impress other with his athleticism...
I was comcerned when he came out and said he was working out on his own and doing pullups, losing weight and getting stronger. He emphasized his upper body strength (pullups), and that’s when I started to worry. Did he pay as much attention to his lower body strength or just contcentration on his upper body, and work enough hips, legs, knees and feet to be totally fit for duty? IDK, but his knee was the issue of injury and that bothers me. The offseason jackknifed a lot great talent last year early. I’ve given him one more year of EFX does, merely for the circumstances.
Doesn’t mean I wouldn’t go after better talent, just being a little patient with him, because, afterall he is talented when healthy. But, not a fraud just yet, brother, frustrated maybe…

Actually I was just parroting what Serg said above...trying to be funny
I agree with you and hoped he would rip it up this year…If Tim can make the passes Moreno needs to be successful he still has talent…I just sense patience is running out…they will bring in guys to compete and compete he must…
One thing about Moreno, his salary is low enough to keep him aroud for a situation back.

I think we will sign a veteran WR, and his name is Eddie Royal...
I know, I know Bleed, the media just couldn’t wait to come with the “Does the signing of Jason Hill yesterday make Eddie Royal a free agency casualty?”…Geez! Royal for Hill? Please…Besides that we have two WR prospects (Goodwin and Dell) that will have all spring and summer to show the coaches they need to be on the team…I think we might bring in some from UDFA and possibly the draft if the right guy is there when we pick, but going after a high value me guy is out of the question imho…

Agree with both of you...
…in my 1st ever post (Broncos positions of need – off season 2012) I gave my impression about the Broncos most glaring roster need for 2012 offseason, IMO in order of dire need: DT, CB and MLB. All my impressions are pre-FA (and Draft) so I’m trying to figure out what could be a realist solution at each position.
I think you're giving too much credit...
I think our needs are: QB RB FB WR OL DE DT MLB CB S
Upgrades are needed virtually everywhere. Talent is needed
Yes there are holes to fill and that is an ongoing proccess in the NFL, it never ceases...
Sergio is talking about pressing needs and I believe he close. Some of those you mentioned (QB, FB, WR, OL and MIKe) may not be the more dire needs for veteran presence…

I can't believe I'm the only one who has rec'd this post! I quess sergio, your not popular enough around here yet and that's a shame...
When does correctness and popularity beat out a solid all around analysis of the very team we all love and root for? Hmm?
Anyway, to heck with them, I say…The tightend position had to have veteran influence last year with drafting two unknown rookies and it worked for the most part with Fells and Rosario. They basically did what they were ask to under the circumstances of Tebow. Mike McCoy, bless his heart racked his brain and came up with a game scheme that fit Tim Tebow’s skillset and it worked for awhile until teams caught up to steam. I’m not disappointed with the level of production the rookies made last year, as I see talent dripping all over them for the future. Those guys should be making big time plays very soon on a field near us. Re-sign Fells and Rosario if they accept basically the same contract for another year, and hope Cornelius Ingram is the beast I think he can be. I would even touch this position in the draft unless there is a guy you can’t pass on at the time we select. Let them fight it out through training camp and then make the tough decision to cut down to four on the roster and maybe one on PS…
Right now we have way too much youth at the Safety position, so drafting one is not the answer, unless of course a versatile (George Iloka) is still there at our late 2nd pick. I like all the possibilities he could bring for us; i.e. He plays SS, or FS, or CB or tweener LB. Not elite in any terms of the word, but displays skills to play all over the secondary and up close to the line. I hope Fox/JDR see that in him. I don’t see BDawk coming back, and I would be surprised if he does. I’ve dwelled on this probably as much as anybody and I believe he will retire. However, I do HOPE EFX see enough with his team leadership, tenacity and veracity to become our secondary ass’t coach. I think we will sign a veteran if BDawk doesn’t play…
With the runningback corp we have there are a few unkowns (Fannin, Omon and Jerimiah Johnson for the most part) that may play major roles or not, that hasn’t been determined yet. If Fox signs a FA then chances of them drafting one early may not come to be. The core of RBs as they stood in 2011 need an upgrade, as everybody knows, but how EFX handling addressing it could go many different ways… Free agent(s), trade (like we did with Gaffney for Bunkley), draft one early or in between the 7 rds we have, or UDFA (Undrafted college free agent). If I had to guess an amount or how many EFX will sign the day after the draft, I would say at least 2 and many 3. As far as drafting one eary I’m still teetering on top of the fence rail not decided…
Sorry about the timing, I started this comment 4 hours ago and company stopped by…

we didn’t trade Gaffney for Bunkley. Gaffney was traded to Washington for Jeremy Jarmon, we got Bunkley from Philadelphia for a 2013 draft pick.

Your absoltuely right, I think we gave up a 6th? My mine has been on Jarmon and very athlete DE Fox/Allen failed at trying to move him inside to UDT.
That trade may have wheels to build on as he is relatively young and Gaffney yet still productive is aging and reached his ceiling.

As to Brian Dawkins...
You know the nice thing about having Elway in charge is this: when John and Brian sit down face to face..pro bowler to pro bowler HOFer to HOFer to be…I wish I could be a fly on the wall…John knows exactly whats going through Brian’s head…and Brian knows John has been there….If I were Brian, I couldn’t imagine a better way to talk out making that the call…play or hang up the cleats…than with John Elway….whatever they decide it will be right…even if Brian wants to wait til camp…remember when John went up to Sturgis to fetch Zimmerman for one more year? … annnnd they will handle it a helluva lot better than the Manning deal is being handled…I’m just glad Brian has a guy like john to talk it out with…its a big decision and an emotional one…they’ll get it right.

I'm with you on all of this bf2b
TE is not a big issue… if I were GM/God, I might look to see if I could replace Rosario with a better blocking TE just to give more diversity/options in the TE group, but have no issue with keeping the focus on developing the current youngsters.
Safety probably does need a vet o come in and provide insurance… I actually think Moore has a good chance to develop and folks are writing him off too quickly, but we also don’t want to be in the situation where if he doesn’t, we’re hosed. I actually hope Dawk retires, because neck injuries are scary, and his liabilities in passcoverage are just getting worse… with a bad coverage MLB (either young player (Irving/Draft pick or someone like Mays), we can’t really afford bad coverage safeties if our DEF wants to take the next step.
Unless there is a steal in the draft (Richardson slipping to us in the first, or Miller falling to the 2nd), I’m fine with later round selections, value FAs, and/or developing the current young RBs we have. Folks are far to harsh on KnoMo, who was outplaying McGahee until he got hurt early season (and injuries continue to be his weakness) and is cheap. Fanin, another injury risk, may offer that home-run threat we’ve lacked in the backfield and could compete for touches. Johnson & Ball are suitable for fighting it out for a 3rd RB slot. I have no problem getting a value RB/FB like McClain or Tolbert, which makes some sense to provide competition for Sylvester/Larsen (assuming we bring him back) and insurance against injury, but spending big on someone like Bush or forgoing other needs like CB/DT/MLB with our early round picks doesn’t thrill me.
I will say that Miller is growing on me… but our CB/DT needs and the value likely to be there around where we pick in the 1st just make a 1st round RB tough to swallow….
I agree cj with this. I still have my eye on RB Chris Polk if he is till there in the 2nd.
In his 4 years at Washingto he progressed each year hanging 5 ypc, then struggled at his bowl against SEC talent, so that lowered his draft stock until he produces at the Combine/Prodays. We need a power back to develop with McGahee…

B Dawk
yeah. what is up with that. him playing in the pro bowl? because it was his last OR because they were playing flag football?
probably just an extra month of healing
A lot of stuff can feel better with 3 weeks of rest and rehab.
That said, I hope he retires… while a great player, his weaknesses are getting magnified. If he comes back, great… he probably still has a role and can positively contribute both depth and leadership… but we need to start thinking about moving on regardless.
When Brando Marshall scores 5 TDs in game they weren't really playing. The Probowl is the worst showcase of talent the NFL puts on the field.
Even watching it leaves me wondering why I even attempted it one more time. The NFL has to do something to make it worthwhile watching, because making my eyes sore doesn’t help me…BDawk said he would go into pray and fine his answer of coming back or retire. I think he will make the right decision through faith in One he believes in..

They should do a Luau in Hawaii – so they still get the trip…then a comedy roast….and then let the guys elect 5 guys to give a 5 min message on what it means to be there…then they hit the local bowling alley…get drunk and have their Pro Bowl! AFC vs NFC…problem solved…It would be a riot!
