QBs and what MHR wants???

I'm going to start a series of each positon and see what MHR wants the front office to do. Sign a free agent, draft a guy or keep the roster the same with our current players. I'll start with QBs and go form there. Jump with me to start

Star-divide

Currently we have 2 QB's on the roster, Timmy Tebow and Adam Weber. We also have 1 Fa in Brady Quinn. I don't see us going into camp with only 2 QBs so we need to either sign or draft a QB. IMO we need a experienced backup to Timmy. Some of the more often mentioned bigger named FAs have been: Jason Campbell, and David Gerrard. Some others have been: Dennis Dixon, Josh Freeman, Shaun Hill, and even Vince Young.

Campbell and Gerrard would be great for really pushing Timmy, but I don't think there would come here because if there did beat out Timmy it would turn into the last 2 years for Orton. I also think those 2 want to start, but chose them if you like.

Dixon, Freeman, and Young bring the speed to run the read option if Timmy gerts hurt. That would be great if we keep running it. I think we will run the read option, but not as much(atleast I hope).

Shaun Hill is more my choice because he can run a pro-style offence and has been a great back up to Matthew Stafford for years. He has also said his #1 team is to go back to Detroit, so he might not even hit the markett???

Brady Quinn is also an option. He hasn't seen the field in 2 years. Never has he attempted a pass in Denver. I think he be a good backup and he is already familiar with our coaches and our offense.

The other option is the draft. I don't think we touch a QB in the 1st 3 rounds atleast, but there a some good ones in there: Ryan Tannehill, Brandon Weeden, Nick Foles, Brock Osweiler, or BJ Coleman. After the 3rd we could draft: Kirk Cousins, Russell Wilson, Kellen Moore, Darren Thomas, or Case Keenum.

I'll attach a poll at the end of these, but please put in some comments as to why you think Denver should go after your guy. Why you think it should be a FA or why it should be a draft pick, and where you think he might be drafted. Thanks for participating and have a great day :)

Can you find the 'W' in this mess? Tebow can.

I would consider him in the second tier of FA's.

Do you think he will leaving the Giants? I think he is a backup for the rest of his career. I also don’t think he would beat or push Timmy that much.

Think you meant Josh Johnson...not Freeman.

Sign Brady Quinn and then a Late Round guy

Dominique Davis of ECU or Jordan Jefferson of LSU

Both come from a run first O in college. Both can run this offense and make things happen with their feet too

It's like the movie Angels in the Outfield.... but this time it's Broncos in the Endzone

Sorry that should have been "or" not "and"

Sign Brady Quinn or then a late rd guy.

Either way- Let them battle for whatever. I love me some Tebow but if someone is better for the job then they are just better. Tebow earned his chance and it open the door for players like RG3, Cam Newton and now guys like Davis and Jefferson. If we are going to draft a QB it needs to be someone who can step in and run a Foxy Ball-Tebow style offense, not a Pocket Passer who we once again will have to change the playbook to fit

I would hope that we move away from so much read option next year.

I think Timmy needs to get better at QB, not running. A running QB is great because the D has to plan for it, but if that QB can’t make quick decisions and put the ball where it needs to be, then his running is less effective. Timmy needs to improve and if that means Quinn, or Weber or somebody else pushes him, then so be it. I think he’ll push himself plenty this offseason.

Why fix what isn't broke

It works right? Didn’t we lead the NFL is rushing? Didn’t we win a playoff game? Who really cares how we do it. If we can win with a zone-read I don’t give a crap if Tebow never throws the ball again. A win is a win no matter the O we’re in!

There were a few teams who figured it out and more will next year. I think the read option can work

but only if Tim greatly improves as a passer so that if they take away the run option he can burn them through the air. If he does not improve then it will get shut down like it did against the Pats.

I agree.

Timmy needs to improve his passing to improve on or record of 8-8. I think he will improve, so watch out NFL Timmy is going to be better next year!!!

I agree with this. Quinn has shown offseason improvements the last two years. I don’t know if he would believe he would be given a honest chance to be the starter though. I get the feeling he is going to want to move away from Denver, but I could be wrong. A player like Quinn (someone with starting experience) and a under the radar rookie draft pick (Case Keenum?) is what I would prefer, but I won’t be surprised if Elway spends a 2nd or 3rd on a QB either.

Dennis Dixon or Josh Johnson

Good young prospects who could step right in if they had to.

I voted Quinn

for one reason.
Any other FA (I’m good with everzone mencioned here) will have to learn a system that is completely different than any other in the NFL.
I suppose that Quinn already knows it. He could have more value for us than for any other NFL team.
In this perspective, him, Weber and a draft pick (Weeder if he falls all the way down to our 2nd round pick) will compete in trainig camp.

But offcourse I never got a Denver pickup both in FA and draft…so…..

by sergiosax on Feb 18, 2012 6:10 AM MST reply actions

The josh Freeman bashing is awesome. So much for him turning into a franchise qb.

Tim Tebow is Denver's 2012 starting QB. I'm not even kind of sorry that offends some of you (including you Elway).

by McGeorge on Feb 18, 2012 8:26 AM MST reply actions

I dunno about that

I think Freeman comes back with a vengeance. He was pretty damn good two-years ago. I still like him. Of course, the poor guy plays for the Bucs; so he might just be screwed anyway…

I can't believe so many people are in favor of signing Brady Quinn.

What difference does it make if knows the system if he can’t play in it?

People are blind

Quinn has looked beyond horrific in almost every regular season game he’s played with a grand total of 3 wins and 9 losses. Just because he’d be a cheap option doesn’t mean he’d be a good option.

Since Denver needs to get away from the college Tebow-option offense

take a QB in rounds 1 or 2. John wants a big pocket passer so draft Tannehill or Osweiler.
This way, if Tim does not progress then we have a QB would can throw.

Kreese and Lawrence will decide if Tim Tebow can develop into our future.

Just resign Quinn for cheap.

Why not? John Elway wants a premium quarterback in a draft (like he was). If the Broncos sucked this year, he would be wheeling and dealing for Luck. That trade is in no way feasible now, and the difference between he and the rest of the draftable QB’s is too great in my opinion—seems to me like a lot of Griese’s, Clausen’s, etc.

Tim Tebow’s backup doesn’t need to be able to run a “Tim Tebow System,” he needs to be able to step in and handle a run-first (with running backs) offense. If Tim Tebow does not improve next year, the team will likely regress (hello 2012 schedule). If Tim Tebow gets injured (which the chances are higher than normal), the team will also likely regress with Quinn or Weber at the helm. In either case, it would be a lot easier in 2013 to work a deal with the 5thish-15thish picks for Barkley—who, aside from Luck, is the only other QB who would have been worth a premium pick or big trade in my opinion.

Quinn won’t command a ton of money or a very long-term deal, and he knows the playbook, coaching staff, and his teammates. He’s very professional, seems to be into the game all the time, overall seems like a good teammate.

In this case with Tebow, Quinn, and Weber, I don’t see the Broncos drafting a QB at all, but I would be ok with a 4th or 5th round QB selection if they were deep into their board, or it was a great value pick.

Let’s just hope that Tebow improves and John doesn’t have to use a premium pick to draft a player like he was.
