I am admittedly new to Mile High Report. I am also a long-time Broncos fan with some opinionated views on the season as it was and the offseason as it should be. So here's what I envision in the perfect world that I live in. As much as possible, I've tried to build as EFX do, through the draft. I've also tried to draft players who'd start in a few seasons with some tutillage.
Transactions:
Trade Knowshon Moreno to New England for 6th round pick.
Trade DJ Williams to Philadelphia for 5th round pick.
To sign:
Justin Forsett, RB, Seattle Seahawks.
Justin Forsett of the Seahawks has looked great this year. Both he and Marshawn Lynch will be free agents this year, with Leon Washington on contract through 2014. I would be shocked if both Forsett and Lynch return as that is a crowded backfield with a lot of talent. No way all of them get signed and we'll be the beneficiaries of that.
Brandon Carr, CB, Kansas City Chiefs
Thank you Chiefs for signing Stanford Routt! We'll take Carr.
Dennis Dixon, QB, Pittsburgh Steelers
If we're going to run the spread option, we need an option quarterback. I bet Dixon would rather a chance at 2nd-string QB than 3rd-string QB.
London Fletcher, LB, Washington Redskins
He has dominated his position for years. We need to pick this guy up. He'll give us stability at the position, much needed stability.
Riley Cooper, WR, Philadelphia Eagles
Cooper played with Tebow at Florida. He's a good player who could play third-string WR. Also a good special teams punt gunner.
Mike Tolbert, RB/FB, San Diego Chargers
Man, this guy could help us out. Line him up at FB or HB, it doesn't matter.
Marcus McNeill, O-line, San Diego Chargers
To take two star players from the Chargers is sweet!
Demetrius Bell, O-line, Buffalo Bills
Under-the-radar tackle.
Jim Leonhard, S, New York Jets
A safety who can come in. ***Only if Dawkins retires, which I expect he will.***
Free Agent re-signings:
Any explanation?
Any questions? Thank you for coming.
Marcus Thomas
Great DT who can give some competition.
I have loved B2 since he walked in the door. Keep the man! Pay him (Franchise tag).
A great backup who I think will stay. Don't overpay him, but I think he has loyalty to here and wouldn't necessarily leave.
This tight end singlehandedly held down our TE fort. Bring him back to teach the newbies how to improve.
Bring him back if only for special teams duties. As long as we don't see any more phantom block-in-the-backs from him, he should contribute for this team on special teams.
Good but not great player. Take him for cheap.
Cuts/Walk aways
Matt Willis
Never impressed me.
This one pains me, but he'll find better pastures somewhere else.
He'll have better chances elsewhere.
Don't need him.
Sure he can handle the workload. But can he play better than other RBs on the roster? Best of luck to you.
Nope.
Not seeing him return.
Mmmmm...thinking hard...no.
Not needed after the signing of Tolbert.
Sorry.
Pains me...but sorry.
"Now I'm done" http://www.youtube.com/v/Nby3aNkk66g And why did you have to go and bad-mouth a starting QB? That's not cool. Good luck.
And on to the draft!
After a little motion, the Broncos have picks as follows: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 7.
Draft:
Round 1: The Denver Broncos select:
Brandon Thompson, DT, Clemson
Thompson hasn't disappointed from his play. He can bring some competition to a spot that needs it.
Round 2: The Denver Broncos select:
Sean Spence, LB, Miami
Welcome to Denver! Spence is a LB who can play hard.
Round 3:
LaMichael James, RB, Oregon
What needs to be said? A RB who is familiar with a spread option system and who is small and fast.
Round 4:
Russell Wilson, QB, Wisconsin
Bring in some competition for Timmy, show that there is still work to be done in camp.
Round 5:
Brandon Mosley, OT, Auburn
Mosley has starter potential, can come and play from the start. I'll slot him behind Clady, let him learn from the master.
Round 5:
Robert Benjamin, WR, Miami
A speedster-burner type who can play PR and run all over the field.
Round 5:
Robert Blanton, CB, Notre Dame
A good tackler-CB who could conceivably play safety in a crunch.
Round 6:
Tank Carder, LB, TCU
What a great name! Up there with Austin Sylvester. ---on a side note, how awesome would it be to say VonDoomTank?
Round 7:
William Vlachos, C, Alabama
Vlachos is a good player whose draft grade seems to be falling. Would be a good pickup and I think could start in a couple years after some training.
Picks: Thompson, Spence, James, Wilson, Mosley, Benjamin, Blanton, Carder, Vlachos.
Final 53:
QB: Tim Tebow, Dennis Dixon, and Russell Wilson* (and Adam Weber)
I expect there to be plenty of training camp competition. I don't think Weber makes it to the roster.
RB: Justin Forsett, Willis McGahee, Mike Tolbert, and LaMichael James* and Mario Fannin (Practice Squad).
As to other RBs, I think Jeremiah Johnson still has great potential and has yet to reach that for the Broncos. But I think he'll be cut and won't really reach that for the Broncos. Great kid, could be a good player. Shame to have to lose him.
FB: Mike Tolbert.
Cut Quinn Johnson.
WR: Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker, Riley Cooper, Robert Benjamin*, Jason Hill.
That's five, people.
TE: Daniel Fells, Julius Thomas, Virgil Green and Dante Rosario
Rosario to play ST, don't look for him to see the field as a TE.
LT: Ryan Clady, Mosley*
LG: Orlando Franklin
OC: J.D. Walton/Beadles/Vlachos*
I expect there to be a camp battle for this spot. And may the best player win. 3rd-string potentially to back up Franklin at LG.
RG: Chris Kuper, Marcus McNeill
RT: Demetrius Bell, Ryan Harris
DE: Elvis Dumervil, Robert Ayers, Jason Hunter and Jeremy Jarmon.
Yes, I've resigned Jarmon. Trying to change his playing style to DT was what got him cut last year. I think at DE he can play for this team.
DT: Brodrick Bunkley, Brandon Thompson*, Marcus Thomas, and Ty Warren
SLB: Von Miller, Mike Mohamed
MLB: London Fletcher, Nate Irving
WLB: Sean Spence*, Mario Haggan, Tank Carder*
CB: Champ Bailey, Brandon Carr, Chris Harris, Robert Blanton*/Cassius Vaughn/Syd'Quan Thompson.
I expect two of the last three to make the roster. Whoever is third-string gets cut. I can't predict this one: I think it's too close.
FS: Quinton Carter, and Rahim Moore, and Robert Blanton* (in a pinch).
SS: Jim Leonhard, David Bruton, Rafael Bush.
K: Matt Prater
LS: Lonnie Paxton
KR: Cassius Vaughn
PR: Robert Benjamin*
And that's it! My dream offseason. Super Bowl in 10...9...8...
