What are your feelings on Carl Nicks
The article says it's unlikely the Saints reach the agreement he wants, and he wants to be paid more than his teammate Jahri Evans. I'm not sure where I stand on this but I'd like to hear your opinions. He's so good, he fits any mold.

He would be a major upgrade
but i hate spending top money on OL, except for a LT. You can find good ones throughout the draft. Just my opinion though.
I would rather see us spend money on a DT/DE or CB
no rookies will be as good as Nicks though
maybe in a couple years one or two guards will develop to the level of Nicks but Nicks is the arguably the best guard in the NFL. No rookie will come close to matching that his first year.
And now for something completely different

Oh i know
but i’d rather find quality talent in the mid rounds at OL instead of paying 50+ million for a guard.

Yeah but drafting an o-lineman on day 3 only potentially upgrades our depth
with signing Nicks, we add an elite guard which instantly upgrades our starting line.
Drafting a day 3 guard and signing Nicks is attacking too different needs. I’m not against giving Beadles and Walton another year so I do agree I’d like to draft an o-lineman on day 3 but the chances of that guy being ready and able to replace Beadles/Walton as a starter and be an true upgrade is slim to none. Nicks would upgrade and replace them from day 1.
This being said, Nicks isn’t near the top of my priorities list but I would really love to have him.

If Nicks is considered "elite" it's the old "bird in the hand" theory..given the price is reasonable.
The window for other Bronco elites (read that Champ Bailey and Dawkins) is likely to close for one or both BEFORE a drafted OL man pans out. Attitude is the other factor to consider in Free Agency as I understand a good number slide after hitting the big pay day.

From what I understand the reason Nicks is hitting FA is because the Saints have to resign Brees
so I don’t think attitude is a factor here, at least I’ve never heard anything. It’s also possible that Brees made Nicks look a lot better than he is so who knows really.

not only Brees
but Colston and Tracy Porter as well. I guess there could be some truth to Brees making Evans & Nicks look better… that could be said about any O-Lineman that works in front of an elite QB, but Nicks is also a straight up mauler in the run game… and we know Brees can’t hjelp him out there too much.
I think both those Saint Guards are the real deal…. both are massive, brute strong men who excel in pass pro and run blocking alike. The only other Guard combo in the league that’s comparable would be Mankins/Waters from New England.

Yeah, id love to sign him, it's just the money that scares me off
I mean, if we could sign a veteran Center to compete with Walton and draft a guard in rounds 4-7 and develop him, i’d be happy. If we dished out the cash to sign him, i wouldnt be upset either. Nicks is a beast and one of the best if not the best guards in the league. i’d just go a different route personally.

I'm not against not spending money
as I’ve said many times, I hate signing big name FA’s to huge contracts but Nicks is one of the few that if we sign to a huge contract, I wouldn’t be against.

with all this being said
I’d put money on the Broncos having the same starting o-line as last year. I think the EFX will give our young line at least another year to grow.

I think so, but...
competition at LG/C could be added though. Beadles did well down the stretch, but Walton didn’t grade out well, so we could see a signing there i believe.
by Scotty Payne on Feb 22, 2012 9:36 AM MST up reply actions
agreed fellas
IMO (and probably EFX’s too), continuity is the most important aspect in building up the trenches. I think they will try to keep the same OL next season…. UNLESS one of the top tier interior lineman falls to us at 25 or the 2nd. If DeCastro, Reiff or someone of that nature is there at 25… it’s a no brainer.

if anything though...
we will bring in some talented depth (as opposed to the non-talented depth we had this year) to push the young starters here.

if DeCastro is there, id be all for it.
He’s a beast

Yeah same here
I’d rather spend a huge contract on a DT/DE/CB/WR ahead of a guard though. But, can’t go wrong with nicks. He would be huge in our run game.
by Scotty Payne on Feb 22, 2012 9:30 AM MST up reply actions
Great player but I don't want to be the team giving him that huge salary.
I’d rather just make mostly risk averse signings and mainly see how much guys in the secondary are going to cost. Getting a veteran safety would be a top priority for me and also getting a CB to play across from Champ, but not another stop gap over the hill veteran. I’d look into Brandon Carr but I feel he might want a bit more than I’d be willing to give up but if we could get him on a fair deal than I’d be all for it.
Wooooot! one of my teams made the postseason and won! PLAYOFFS!!!1
Denver Broncos: 2011 AFC WEST Champs!
Come on Toronto teams, one of you make the goddamn playoffs.
Fox did say they were going to address the interior OLine in one of the pools. Big dollar signing? I doubt it.

I've said I hate spending big bucks on free agents plenty of times
but Nicks is arguably the best guard in the NFL and it’s looking like the Saints won’t be able to keep him. He is one of few I’d be willing to shell out a ton of cash for.
This FA class is so good and makes it really hard to be the guy that frowns upon signing big name player to fat contracts. Oh well, I can get over it.
And now for something completely different
i agree on not spending big money on fa's
But any time you can get an elite player it’s worth it, just not usually mid level starters. I wouldn’t mind Nicks, M. Williams,Manning
We have no elite player along our line. We need one to help elevate play of our young guys. I say go get him.
Foxy...you WERE on the hot seat, but you fooled me you rascally old deveil...keep building that team mate!

Champ Bailey.
IDK Boydy
if Ryan Clady isn’t elite… then he’s just a baby hair away from it. I could go on and on about him, but a top 3 LT in football HAS to be considered somewhat elite.

See Pale, I don't rate him elite....he is very, very good but nor elite...but with Nicks next to him it would be SO great for him.

You don't need an elite OL to be successful
it would be nice, but i would rather draft OL then spending big bucks on one. I’d like to upgrade at Center though

That's a tough argument...
Clady did not look like Clady this year. It could also be argued that Kuper was our best lineman this past season.
Von Miller and Dumervil are basically racing to see who's first to the QB...Love this feeling!!!
Damnit!
That was meant for PaleHorse78 up above!

I know man
he was not himself this year, but he was still better than most.

Love Nicks but not his price tag. He won't be a Bronco thats for sure (IMO)
Tim Tebow wears 3WM and drinks Tuscan whole milk.
I think Nicks would be a huge upgrade over Beadles. But if we are going to spend that type of money on a FA, we might as well make a move for Ray Rice. I would rather see us draft Konz or Cordy Glenn at #25 than pay that type of money for Nicks. However if EFX somehow bring in Nicks, I would be thrilled.

I would be a HUGE no on Ray Rice...Nicks we could have until mid 30's...Rice maybe for another 3 years.

Not that I am campaigning for us to sign Rice (because there is no way we will get him), but he is only 25. He has at least 5 very good years ahead of him. And don’t you think that Fox knows that a elite playmaking RB is the bread and butter to his “punch them in the mouth” philosophy? But what I was trying to say was I would rather we spend the type of money Nicks wants on a play maker. Perhaps I should have used Carlos Rogers or Mario Williams as a better example.

Would rather spend big bucks on a corner or a safety or DL
OL isnt as big of a need for us

agreed
but I’m not sure there is a CB or Safety that’s the same caliber as Nicks. DL on the other hand… we could make a play at Super Mario. If I had to chose between the two, I’d go Mario Williams for sure.

True but
then we could address Safety and Corner instead of one superstar OL, which isnt something that immediately needs addressed. Or just sign one superstar in Mario Williams, instead of blowing it all on a position that doesnt really need addressed
