The NFLPA database does not list Broncos SS Brian Dawkins as being under contract for 2012.
Dawkins' old contract listed him with a 2012 base salary of $6 million, but he appears to be an unrestricted free agent after the Broncos did some kind of tinkering with the deal, either last offseason or during the year. Dawkins has a career-threatening neck injury and may be forced into retirement anyway.

Original contract
I remember that the Broncos originally signed him to a 4 year contract. This was largely criticised but ignored the back loaded nature of the deal and that another bonus was due after year 2. It appears that as part of receiving that second bonus, Dawk restructured. Very in teresting that he’s not under contract. I wasn’t aware of that. I wonder if this is taken into most of the salary cap estimations in the web for the Broncos? If 6M is now available that wasn’t, that’s a great opportunity and gives added flexibility.
Would love to have him back for another year if he’s healthy and willing to go again. If not, safety becomes an even bigger need and one that hopefully free agency will fill.

The original deal was 5 years/$17M. They restructured the last 3 years into a one year deal.

Are you sure WT?
I really don’t think it was 5 years.

ouch
The way Dawkins played last year we will really miss him. It was great to have him while we did. I think I have seen some comments about him sticking around and coaching….. That would be a great addition to the staff I think!
I hope the best for him in his recovery and whatever happens.
Go Broncos!

We at MHR have mentioned that.
No one else has that I know of.

When he re-structured
it must have been a 1 year deal. He said the other day his retirement depends on “if” the Broncos want him back. Now it makes sense he said that. He would need another 1 year deal.
I think Ty Warren will have to do something of the same thing (re-structure his deal to be a 1 year deal) to stay.

Ty Warren only got a 2-year deal to begin with, right? So there’s only one left anyway.

Quinton Carter is the only safety I can say I feel comfortable with starting.
Dawkins was a liability in the open field but he didn’t miss tackles everywhere, which is really half the battle.
Here it is folks...
Scheduled to make $6 million this season with the Broncos, Dawkins instead will play for $2 million — $1.6 million in salary with a $400,000 signing bonus, according to contracts turned into the league Tuesday.
“Where I am in my life as a person, this is no big deal to me,” Dawkins said. “It’s what I felt was right. The last 2 1/2 years, I had a horrible taste in my mouth. I really wanted to be part of this team, part of the Denver Broncos — how do I say this? — without any dark clouds over us. I could have decided to continue my career some other place, but that’s not what I wanted to do.”
Another aspect to Dawkins’ new contract: The final two years of his original five-year deal were canceled. Instead of his contract expiring in 2013, it concludes after this season.

Now, Brian Dawkins hasn't decided to retire just yet, and said he would pray about it and see what God wants him to do.
As far as BDawk playing with another team this year, I’m pretty sure we can count that out. If he plays at all it will be with the Broncos. As for me… I hope the Broncos vehemently try to get him to sign on as a DBs coach, that would thrill the heck out of me…
